Primary Choir Thur. 5:00 pm (Ages 6‐8) $120 Instructor: Sorohan, Melissa Course #: 1050

The principal goal of this choir is to foster a love of music and to begin to develop good musicianship by expanding musical experiences through fun activities and high‐quality, age‐appropriate song repertoire. Through the use of folk songs and singing games, children are taught healthy vocal production and basic musical elements, such as high/low, loud/soft, and the difference between beat and rhythm. Thursday Start Time: 5:00 PM End Time: 6:00 PM Begn Date: 2/9/2012 End Date: 5/17/2012

Dalcroze Eurhythmics Instructor: Vargo, Vilma Introduction to Music ‐ Dalcroze Eurhythmics: Eurhythmics is a method of music education that teaches all elements of music through physical motion, incorporating the idea that music comes from the original instrument, the human body. Rhythmic sense, listening, singing, and muscular coordination are developed simultaneously. Eurhythmics unlocks creativity and opens the door to enriched and enlivened music making by combining rhythmic unity between the eye, ear, mind, and body in the experience. It is a unique, joyful, and powerful education in music. Recommended before the study of a musical instrument and beneficial while taking lessons.

Music at the Beck Center for the Arts

The music department at the Beck Center for the Arts will foster a love for music in students of all ages. From music classes to private lessons to our ensembles, students have many opportunities to explore the joys of making music. Our Early Childhood Classes are designed to introduce children from Birth to 6 years to musical instruments and simple music concepts that will encourage future musical growth. If your child is constantly singing around the house, enjoys pounding out rhythms on pots and pans, or if you are interested in having your child eventually take private lessons, we suggest they begin by enrolling in either Kids-N-Tunes or Dalcroze Eurhythmics. After taking Dalcroze, we suggest parents register their children for Instrumental Classes, Private Lessons, or Vocal Classes so they may continue to explore music making. Whether or not your child has taken Dalcroze, we suggest you consider our Instrumental and Vocal Classes and our Suzuki Violin Lessons for children.

Private Lessons

Private lessons at the Beck Center for the Arts are offered to anyone who wishes to learn an instrument or to increase their ability on an instrument they are studying already. Our music staff is an accomplished group of instructors who have years of experience helping musicians of all ages discover their true potential on a wide variety of music instruments and in singing.

Students may enroll at any time throughout the year. Instruction available at all levels for half-hour, 45-minute, or one-hour lessons. Tuition for 17 weekly half-hour lessons will range from $357 to $425 ($21 to $25 per half-hour), depending on instructor. Lessons may begin at any time and are pro-rated for the remainder of the semester. To schedule private lessons, contact the Music Office at 216.521.2540 x37.

Registration Policies for Private Lessons

Registration: Must be made prior to first lesson. Tuition and fees are due at that time. A registration form must be completed and signed by the person responsible for payment of lessons. Registration can be made by phone with payment by credit card. Lessons are prorated after the session begins. Cancellations/Absences: Contracting for private instruction obligates a student for the entire semester. All lessons must be paid for whether taken or missed. The Beck Center does not require instructors to make up student’s missed lessons. In the event the instructor cancels a lesson or a class, a make-up will be offered or a fee adjustment will be made. Refunds: After the third week, no refunds will be issued for the remaining lessons for which the student has registered.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR VOCALISTS Many parents who have children that love to sing look to register them for Singing Lessons. At the Beck Center, Singing Lessons, or Voice Lessons are not offered for children under the age of 12. Our staff emphasizes healthy singing and having a child take Voice Lessons at a young age can be detrimental to their development as singers. As an alternative, we offer the Primary Choir and the Pre-teen Voice Class.

The Primary Choir is designed to provide children 6 to 8 years the opportunity to explore singing in a group setting. For more information about this group, please read the description under Music Ensembles.

The Pre-teen Voice Class is offered for students 10 and 13 years. This class is the perfect setting for students who would like to take Voice Lessons but are not yet 12 years old. Please read more about this class in the Youth Music Classes section.

If you are interested in classes that will help the young singer prepare for singing in theater productions, please refer to the Theater section of the web site. For theater students looking for private singing lessons, our staff of vocal instructors

have years of theater experience and are here to help you reach your full potential. Contact the music office for more information.

Group Lessons Group lessons are a good way for beginners to experience an instrument and work with other students who are also beginning their musical journey. In group settings, students develop rhythmic skills as well as improve skills of cooperation and peer interaction. See class options under Youth Music Classes on the schedule page and the course descriptions . A NOTE FOR BEGINNERS When enrolling for music instruction, parents and students have the option of either group or private lessons. In private lessons, each student may learn at his or her own pace, and the teacher is able to focus completely on that individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. A child may change from group to private lessons at any time. The Suzuki Method combines a music teaching method and a philosophy embracing the total development of the child: “Character first and ability second.” Prompted by a nurturing environment of parental involvement where students listen to high-quality recordings and use repetition of step by-step mastery of instrumental technique, musicality, memory and reading. Parents attend lessons and direct practice at home.

Choir Retreat Both choirs will meet for a night of singing, pizza, prize drawings, fun and games. This rehearsal/social event will help choir members prepare for their performances in December so attendance is expected. Students are encouraged to bring a friend not already in the choir! The spring date will be announced in February. Choir Performances The culminating performance of the first semester will be held January 21, 2012 with the spring concert being held on May 12, 2012. Additional performances will be announced by the instructor at rehearsals and in a letter that will be sent home with choir members.

Showcases

All Music Department showcases are open to the public and held in the Music-Armory Building unless indicated otherwise. Adult Art Shares An opportunity for adult students to perform for peers in an informal setting. An Adult Art Share will be held on January 14th and April 28th. Faculty Showcases A Faculty Showcase will be held during the winter months. Additional details will be made available at a later date. Student Showcases The Music Department provides monthly showcase opportunities for young students taking private lessons and our choirs. Student showcases will be held on the following Saturdays: January 21, March 24, and May 19.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Studio Theater Written by Barbara Robinson Directed by Rachel Spence Fridays, December 9 & 16, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, December 10 & 17, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Sundays, December 11 & 18, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. In this hilarious Christmas tale, a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids-- probably the most inventively awful kids in history. When the town reacts with horror to the news that the most sinful children will be playing the holiest roles, the pageant director becomes even more determined to make it work. Although everyone expects a disaster, the Herdmans bring a fresh interpretation to the Christmas story, a story they have never heard before. You won't believe the mayhem – and the fun – when the Herdmans collide with the Christmas story head on!

Reckless

Written by Craig Lucas Directed by Jonathan Kronenberger Fridays, February 24 & March 2, 2012 at 7:30 pm Saturdays, February 25 & March 3, 2012 at 7:30 pm Sunday, February 26 & March 4, 2012 at 3:00 pm Student Matinee: March 1, 2012 at 10:00 am At home on Christmas Eve, Rachel is informed by her guilty husband that he has hired a hitman to kill her, and she must flee for her life—which she does by scrambling out the bedroom window and into the snowy night. She meets and joins up with a variety of colorful characters – moving not only from town to town but psychiatrist to psychiatrist – encountering an endless series of incredible coincidences. Throughout, Rachel is led more and more to ponder whether the modern world might not be a vast conspiracy designed to systematically undermine her own increasingly shaky sanity.

Registration Policies and Fees

General Class Registration

Classes fill up quickly. Register early to guarantee the student’s place in the class. Tuition: Payment in full must accompany all class registrations unless a payment schedule has been approved in advance. Students whose tuition is past due may not register for classes in the following sessions. Confirmations: Beck Center does not mail confirmation of class registrations. We contact you only if a class is filled or cancelled. If you do not hear from us, attend the class as scheduled. Cancelled/Missed Classes: Class make-ups are given only when the teacher cancels an entire class. Your notification of your inability to attend a class is a courtesy to the teacher, but we regret we cannot excuse you from payment of the class for which you have contracted. Late Registration: When space permits, late registrations will be accepted at full cost. Refunds/Credits: Full refunds will be made if a course is filled or cancelled. Refunds for class tuition (less a $10 processing fee) will be given only when a student withdraws from a class at least seven days prior to the first day of class. If a cancellation is received after that date but before the first day of the class, the credit for tuition will be applied to the student’s account (less materials/book fees) for future class selections. Credits on accounts are valid for one year from the date of credit.

Private Lessons Registration

Registration: Must be made prior to first lesson. Tuition and fees are due at that time. A registration form must be completed and signed by the person responsible for payment of lessons. Registration can be made by phone (216-521-2541x37) with payment by credit card. Lessons are prorated after the session begins. Cancellations/Absences: Contracting for private instruction obligates a student for the entire semester. All lessons must be paid for whether taken or missed. The Beck Center does not

require instructors to make up student’s missed lessons. In the event the instructor cancels a lesson, a make-up will be offered or a fee adjustment will be made. Refunds: After the third week, no refunds will be issued for the remaining lessons for which the student has registered.

Financial Aid

Financial aid and a limited number of scholarships are available for students up to 18 years of age. Financial aid is not available for private music lessons or creative arts therapies sessions. To apply for financial aid, call 216.521.2540 x12, or stop by Customer Services or the Music-Armory Building office to pick up an application. Deadline for applications is January 10, 2012. Applications will be reviewed and processed in the order they are received. Financial aid is disbursed based on need. You must apply each semester. Payment Plan

Parents or guardians may request to be enrolled in a tuition payment plan for a fee. Fifty percent (50%) of the tuition will be due on registration with the remainder due April1st. There is a $10 fee for a two-payment plan. If you have any questions, please contact Judi Votypka (216-521-2540x17) or Rennie Tisdale (216-521-2540 x28).
