Message from the President

September 23, 2009, marked an exciting mile-stone for the Foundation. On that day, we cele-brated the official launch of The American Friendsof the National Gallery of Canada – and the bril-liant exhibition Yousuf Karsh at 100: Portraits ofArtists – at a reception graciously held byAmbassador Michael Wilson at the Embassy ofCanada in Washington, DC. We thank Paul Frazer,Treasurer of The American Friends, for his contri-bution to that important evening. A few weekslater, we celebrated the launch in New York, at aprivate reception generously hosted by PeterRestler, Secretary of The American Friends, and hiswife Susan. With The American Friends, we ex-pand our ability to share the National Gallery’swonderful story with the millions of people livingin the US who love art and love Canada, as well asfacilitate their support of the Gallery. We look for-ward with great anticipation to this new opportu-nity to grow our family of patrons.

Closer to home, we’ve had the pleasure of wel-coming Circle patrons to our annual Circle break-fast. We were also delighted to celebrate with TheFriends of the Print Room the latest acquisitionmade possible by their loyal support, dedicated toformer Curator of European and American ArtCatherine Johnson, as you will read in Vernissage,on page 32. On that occasion, we bid goodbye andsaid thank you to the group’s dedicated founderand former Chair, Pamela Osler Delworth, andwarmly welcomed the Friends’ new Chair, DianeE. Weber.

Similarly, the openings of the Gallery’s fall ex-hibitions were a great opportunity to acknowledgethe invaluable contribution of long-standing part-ners Pratt & Whitney Canada, the presenting spon-sor of both Gabor Szilasi: The Eloquence of the EveryDay and The Drawings and Paintings of DaphneOdjig: A Retrospective Exhibition, and Bell, which ex-tended for another two years the support they havegiven to the Bell Audioguide program since 2003.  

Art transcends languages, cultures and time.Forty years ago, New York resident Clifford Brownwas enthralled to see Piero di Cosimo’s celebratedVulcan and Aeolus, the work gracing our cover, hereat the National Gallery. The encounter was to be adecisive moment for him. I invite you to read hisinspiring story in the following pages. 

Finally, my Foundation colleagues and I extendto you our warmest wishes for a Joyful HolidaySeason and a Happy New Year.

Message de la présidente

Le 23 septembre dernier a marqué un jalon très impor-tant pour la Fondation. Il s’agissait du lancement officielde The American Friends of the National Gallery of Canada etde l’inauguration de la fascinante exposition Yousuf Karshà 100 ans. Portraits d’artistes lors d’une réception gracieuse-ment organisée par l’ambassadeur Michael Wilson del’ambassade du Canada à Washington (D.C.).  Nous tenonsà remercier M.  Paul Frazer, trésorier de The AmericanFriends, de sa contribution à cette belle soirée. Quelquessemaines plus tard, dans le cadre d’une réception privéedont les généreux hôtes étaient M. Peter Restler, secrétairede The American Friends, et son épouse Susan, nous avonscélébré ce même lancement à New York. L’organisme TheAmerican Friends améliore notre capacité de raconter la ma-gnifique histoire du Musée aux millions de personnes ré-sidant aux États-Unis qui aiment profondément l’art et leCanada et nous permet de faciliter leurs démarches visantà soutenir le Musée. Nous nous réjouissons de cette nou-velle occasion d’accroître notre grande famille de mé-cènes.  

Plus près de chez nous, nous avons eu l’immense plaisird’accueillir les mécènes du Cercle lors du petit déjeunerannuel tenu pour eux. Nous avons aussi été heureux desouligner la plus récente acquisition rendue possible grâceau fidèle appui des Friends of the Print Room et dédiée àMme Catherine Johnson, ancienne conservatrice de l’art eu-ropéen et américain (je vous invite d’ailleurs à lire notrearticle sur ce sujet à la page 32 de Vernissage). Lors de cetévénement, nous avons chaleureusement dit au revoir etmerci à Mme Pamela Osler-Delworth, fondatrice dévouée etancienne présidente de The Friends of the Print Room, etsouhaité la bienvenue à Mme Diane E. Weber, nouvelle pré-sidente de ce groupe.

Nous avons profité de l’inauguration des expositionsd’automne du Musée pour reconnaître l’inestimablecontribution de deux partenaires de longue date, soit Pratt& Whitney Canada, commanditaire principal des exposi-tions Gabor Szilasi. L’éloquence du quotidien et Les dessins etpeintures de Daphne Odjig. Une exposition rétrospective, etBell, qui a accepté de prolonger de deux ans le soutien qu’ilaccorde au programme d’audioguides Bell depuis 2003.  

L’art transcende les langues, les cultures et le temps. Ily a quarante ans, le New Yorkais Clifford Brown a été em-ballé de contempler en personne ici au Musée la célèbreœuvre de Piero di Cosimo intitulée Vulcain et Éole, qui ornenotre couverture. Ce fut pour lui une visite déterminanteet je vous invite à lire son intéressante histoire dans nospages. 

En terminant, mes collègues de la Fondation se joignentà moi pour vous souhaiter beaucoup de joie et de bonheurpendant la période des Fêtes et la nouvelle année.

Pondering a move from his native NewYork to Ottawa back in 1969, Dr. CliffordBrown visited the National Gallery at itsold residence on Elgin Street. Here, he dra-matically enlarged his knowledge of theNational Gallery’s imposing holdings, en-countering a collection he had known untilthen primarily from Erwin Panofsky’s fa-mous essay on Piero di Cosimo’s Vulcanand Aeolus (c.1490), one of the Gallery’smost celebrated paintings.

For Dr. Brown, coming face to face withdi Cosimo’s work was a decisive moment.Over the next several decades, from hishome base in Ottawa, he became a re-spected expert on the Italian Renaissance,published six books and over seventy arti-cles, and initiated a philanthropic generos-ity that continues to advance the culture ofresearch at the National Gallery’s Libraryand Archives and elsewhere.

Over the years, Dr. Brown has donatedhundreds of books and a multitude ofslides to the Library. In 2000, he establishedthe Clifford M. Brown Library Endowmentwith the National Gallery of CanadaFoundation to permit the acquisition ofprohibitively costly books. As Chief of theNational Gallery of Canada Library andArchives Jonathan Franklin notes,“Clifford Brown’s generous gifts to theLibrary continue to add depth and richnessto our collections, especially in his cher-ished field of the art of the Renaissance.Thanks to him, we are able to foster thework of Canadian art historians by makingthese important works of scholarship avail-able for all.” The research that such workshas enabled is what Dr. Brown’s generosityultimately hopes to inspire.

“I was blessed with exceptionally sup-portive parents and a superb undergradu-ate teacher, Kenneth C. Lindsay, one of theoriginal ‘Monument Men’ charged with re-turning art treasures to their rightful own-ers at the end of World War II, and gradu-ate teachers, most notably RudolfWittkower,” recalls Dr. Brown, who holdsa PhD in Art History. “The support I giveto the National Gallery’s Library is my way

of saying thank you to them all, as well asto my former students and to Canada itself,and thus to provide important resourcesfor future generations of art historians.”

Recently named to the AccademiaNazionale Virgiliana of Mantova and pro-claimed honorary citizen of Mantova inrecognition of his forty-two years of re-search in the Archivio di Stato, Dr. Brown’sexemplary scholarship continues to garnerdeserved public recognition. At present,an Italian translation of his book on theGonzaga tapestry (originally co-authoredwith Guy Delmarcel in 1996) is forthcom-ing, and will serve as the catalogue for anexhibition at the Palazzo del Te set to openin March 2010.

The National Gallery and theFoundation are fortunate to have Dr.Clifford M. Brown as a patron and dearfriend, and delighted to acknowledge hiswonderful, ongoing support.

En 1969, alors qu’il contemplait l’idéede quitter sa ville natale de New Yorkpour s’installer à Ottawa, Clifford Browna décidé de visiter le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada qui, à l’époque, était situésur la rue Elgin. Cette visite lui a permisde considérablement améliorer ses con -naissances sur les impressionnants avoirsdu Musée en explorant une collectionqu’il connaissait surtout du célèbre essaid’Erwin Panofsky portant sur l’œuvre dePiero di Cosimo intitulée Vulcain et Éole(v.1490), l’une des plus réputées toiles duMusée.

Le fait de pouvoir contempler cetteœuvre en personne fut un moment déter-minant. Au cours des décennies qui ontsuivi, il a su, à partir d’Ottawa, devenir un expert de renom en matière deRenaissance italienne, publier six livres etplus de soixante-dix articles, et établir unesprit de philanthropie qui contribue toujours à la culture de recherche deBibliothèque et Archives du Musée etd’autres institutions.

Au fil des ans, Brown a fait don de cen-taines de livres et d’une multitude de dia-positives à la Bibliothèque. En 2000, deconcert avec la Fondation du Musée, il amis sur pied le Fonds de dotation CliffordM.  Brown pour la bibliothèque afin depermettre l’acquisition de livres à coûtprohibitif. De dire Jonathan Franklin,chef de la Bibliothèque et Archives duMusée  : « Les généreux dons consentispar Clifford Brown à la Bibliothèquecontribuent à l’ampleur et à la richesse denos collections, surtout dans le domainede l’art de la Renaissance qui lui est sicher. Grâce à lui, nous sommes en mesured’appuyer le travail des historiens de l’artcanadiens en rendant d’importantes œu-vres accessibles à tous. » Les recherchesissues d’un tel accès sont exactement ceque Brown souhaite rendre possible parsa grande générosité.

Dernièrement, Brown fut nommé à laAccademia Nazionale Virgiliana deMantoue et proclamé citoyen honoraire

de cette même ville en reconnaissance deses quarante-deux années de recherche auArchivio di Stato. Son exemplaire savoircontinue de lui mériter de nombreuses ac-colades publiques. Une traduction ita-lienne de son livre sur la tapisserieGonzaga (rédigé en collaboration avecGuy Delmarcel en 1996) sera publiée pro-chainement et servira de catalogue ac-compagnant une exposition au Palazzodel Te qui sera inaugurée en mars 2010.

The beauty of the north came south to the National Galleryof Canada with the presentation of Uuturautiit: Cape DorsetCelebrates 50 Years of Printmaking (October 16, 2009 – January17, 2010). The opening of this historically significant and in-spiring exhibition was made all the more special by the atten-dance of several of the artists. Their participation was madepossible by the generosity of the Inuit Relations Secretariat,INAC, as well as of First Air, which offered air transportationfrom Cape Dorset, and Les Suites Hotel, Ottawa, which pro-vided accommodations. We are grateful to these partners fortheir support in celebrating this memorable anniversary.

La beauté du Nord est présente plus au sud avec l’ouverturede l’exposition Uuturautiit. Cape Dorset célèbre 50 ans de gravure,présentée au Musée du 16 octobre 2009 au 17 janvier 2010. Levernissage de cette captivante exposition des plus significativessur le plan historique a été d’autant plus spécial que plusieursdes artistes ont assisté à l’événement. Leur participation a étérendue possible grâce à la générosité du Secrétariat des rela-tions avec les Inuits, AINC, de First Air, qui leur a gracieuse-ment offert le transport aérien en provenance de Cape Dorsetet de l’hôtel Les Suites d’Ottawa, qui les a logé.
