FROM THE PRESIDENTLarry Kilmer, WHNA PresidentHappy Holidays.
As the holidays near, we look back at all of the great events that took place in 2013. New neighbors have moved to the neighborhood, some of us have welcomed new members to our families, and others have started new jobs. This year was also memorable for the Heights.
Some of the great happenings for this past year in the Heights include a fantastic presentation by John Gurda at our annual meeting, a very successful Boulevard Bash, another great Spooktacular, interviews by John McGivern for his show “Around the Corner with John McGivern”, and Habitat for Humanity Milwaukee’s first neighborhood wide donation Blitz. Looking forward to 2014, Historic Milwaukee will host their annual spring Spaces and Traces event in our neighborhood on May 17th from 9am–5pm and we are working on new events and initiatives to strengthen our community.
Thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers that have truly made the WHNA and our events the best in the city.
I wish you very happy holidays and a great new year. ❅

Habitat for Humanity partners with washington heights for the Neighborhood Blitzby Jake Brandt
As the leaves fall and the breeze blows crisp with taste of autumn, the Washington Heights neighborhood is embracing the spirit of giving that so defines the upcoming holiday season. And like a good neighbor, Washington Heights is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to raise funds for the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI), focused on eliminating poverty housing specifically in the Washington Park neighborhood.
Unlike Habitat strategies in the past, NRI utilizes a variety of tools to help empower families in Washington Park. Habitat’s signature new home construction is now accompanied by home rehabilitation, weatherization, and repair services for existing residents as well as community development to focus on safety, employment, and education. To accomplish this, Habitat for Humanity raises a large portion of their funds through the resale of donated goods at their ReStores. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore offers two stores/donation centers in the area (3015 N. 114th, Wauwatosa & 420 S. 1st, Milwaukee) who accept usable furniture, appliances, cabinetry, building supplies and home goods. The stores are open to the public with new treasures being stocked daily. Through the resale of these generous donations, the ReStore
generates over $300,000 annually to fund Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative.
Washington Heights is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity to bring its ReStore directly to neighborhood residents. On December 14, the ReStore will be hosting a Neighborhood Blitz staging our mobile donation center in Mt. Olive parking lot. Volunteers will be on hand to collect tax deductible donations of gently used home furnishings, building supplies, and appliances. Got something that’s too big to fit in the family vehicle? ReStore will also have their pickup crew on hand, picking up larger donations from participating residents.
So, how will you get into the spirit of giving this season with the Washington Heights Neighborhood Blitz?

24th Annual WHNA Spooktacular!by Heidi J. Steeno
The 24th annual WHNA Spooktacular nighttime trick-or-treating event took place in Area 2 (north side of Washington Boulevard to the south side of Lloyd, 47th to 51st Street) on Saturday, October 26 with over 100 homes handing out 92,000 pieces of candy! The crisp, clear night brought out nearly 1,000 young trick-or-treaters, along with their family members for a fun-filled night that started at Spook Central with the Annual Costume Contest sponsored by Rainbow Booksellers and Washington Heights carved pumpkin display. From 6:30 to 8:30PM the streets of Area 2 were filled with spooks, ghouls, princesses and even Harry Potter collecting candy. Many homes and yards throughout Area 2 were fully decorated in a variety of styles and themes, including Cirque de 49th and a zombie grave yard on Hi-Mount. Thank you to Area 2 for hosting a fun, safe and festive night for the entire neighborhood!

Bag It RevisitedBy Joan Janus
What?? You missed the November 9th screening of Bag It? Or maybe you were there without your notebook. Well, here are a couple of shocking facts from the documentary:
1) The average American uses 500 plastic bags each year for an average of 12 minutes before discarding them. 2) Plastic bags are made of fossil fuels such as petroleum and natural gas, which are non-renewable resources.
So... what can YOU do about it? The first step is to become more aware of your choices. Switch to reusable bags. Make it a habit to keep reusable bags handy. I always keep some in the car. Encourage friends and family to do the same. How about giving gifts in cloth bags that can be reused? Ask your favorite stores to promote reusable bags.
“Think about this, why would we make something that we’re going to use for a very short time out of materials that basically are going to last forever and that you’re just going to throw away?” Jeb Berries, star of Bag It.

It Pays to Know Your H2O Score
People who live and work in the Heights can earn gift certificates at local stores by reducing the amount of water they use each year.
Milwaukee Water Works is partnering with H2O Score, a program that lets people know how much water they use, compare it with others – and get reimbursed if they use less. If a family reduces water use by 100 gallons from the previous year, they’ll earn a dollar. If you reduce by 1,000 gallons, you’ll earn $10 worth of coupons from businesses such as Café Hollander, Castleman & Sons Plumbing, or Aerial Art.
“Washington Heights is among the top five Milwaukee neighborhoods in terms of the number of households” already using H2Oscore, according to Nathan Conroy, who manages community partners.

Decade of Dedication: Washington Park Library Turns 10by Barb Haig
At the turn of the 21st century (doesn’t that sound funny!), Washington Heights neighbors joined with the Milwaukee Public Library to embark on what was is still the largest branch library in the city.
City funds paid for the building at the site of the old Boulevard Inn. Then a neighborhood-wide effort – involving Washington Heights residents including Sandy & John Foloran and Bruce & Peppy O’Neil and organizations such as the Washington Heights Rainbow Association and the students of St. Sebastian School – helped provide funding for the books and other materials.
A grand opening on April 12, 2003 welcomed people from all over the area. They enjoyed the unveiling of the fabulous two-story atrium with the blown-glass sculpture, “Megaphor,” by artist Steve Feren and the wide-open architecture filled with literature and ready for readers. Hidden below was the building’s innovative radiant in-floor heating and geothermal heat pumps going down 200 feet.
THOUSANDS CHECK OUT THE LIBRARYSince then, some two million people have entered the doors and
checked out more than 1.4 million materials. In 2012 alone, 225,548 people used their library cards for 144 863 items – and the numbers keep increasing. While some people think that the internet is replacing libraries, what many are discovering is that people need libraries more than ever as a resource for learning.
“Everyone thinks of traditional (learning) tools such as books, and we certainly have those,” says Daniel Kentowski, library branch manager. “But we’ve expanded into all assets: videos, computers, hands-on kits and more.”
Thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the library not only has laptops for patrons, but also the library technologists to help people learn how to use them – especially for preparing resumes and finding jobs. Classes and drop-in assistance are available several days a week. The stimulus funding also supports a teacher in the library after school to help students of all ages with homework. While that funding is coming to an end, Mayor Barrett has included the positions in the 2014 budget.
WELCOME TO ALL In addition to its traditional clientele, the Washington Park
library is home to programs aimed at a variety of people, including:• Toddlers – Saturday Play & Learn programs allow parents
to introduce young children to the library and all it offers.• Gamers – Monthly family game nights offer video games
and traditional board games.• Teen Boys – A bi-weekly book club aimed at young men
encourages thought-provoking discussion.• Day Care Providers – Continuing education classes
provide materials that not only help day care centers teach Willie Hines and Michael Murphy

Kentowski, who came to the branch in July, looks forward to expanding several programs in the future, including relationships with Washington Park Partners and Safe & Sound.
“We want to make this a destination in tough economic times to provide entertainment and learning for families that doesn’t cost anything,” he says. “If we can’t help you, we can find someone who can.”

AN EARLY VALENTINEby Jonathan Rupprecht
I was listening to my car radio one afternoon in early October when a reporter came on the air with a very enthusiastic report about a new coffee shop that he had discovered: our very own Valentine, at 59th and Vliet.
I live two blocks away from Valentine and was aware of its coffee roasting business, but somehow I hadn’t noticed that it had already opened up as a coffee shop also. So I stopped in for a look, and immediately shared that reporter’s enthusiasm about Valentine Coffee Roasters.
What impressed the reporter most about Valentine is its “pour-over” manner of serving coffee: each cup is individually brewed, and measured to the exact gram. Aaron Cleavland, the manager, says that Valentine was the first coffee shop in the Milwaukee area to serve coffee exclusively this way. He also emphasized that Valentine’s focus is on personal service; they strive to avoid simply handing customers their coffee and leaving it at that.
The coffee roasting business in the back of the shop is off to a good start, supplying the coffee for all Bartolotta restaurants, plus Maxie’s Southern Comfort and Blue’s Egg restaurants and the Rochambo tea and coffee shop. I asked Aaron if they deal with fair trade coffee, and he said that while some of their coffee is certified fair trade, all of it is fairly traded; the certification process is not always feasible for all parties involved.
14 ❖ Contact us at [email protected] or visit us online at www.whna.net
Every bag of Valentine Coffee has this statement on it: “Valentine Coffee Roasters was founded on the premise that coffee begins as a
fruit, uniquely evocative of a particular time and place. This character – the terroir – is maximized by carefully roasting beans to the apex of natural sweetness, brightness, and balance… never to bitterness.
At our Vliet Street Roastery and Tasting Room on Milwaukee’s West Side, we start with the best beans available and a passion for everything delicious. We rely on curiosity, experience, and attention to detail to craft the most expressive – yet satisfying – coffee possible. In this pursuit, we never fail to enjoy ourselves, our work, or our coffee.”
Founder Robb Kashevarof and partner Joe Gilsdorf began working in this building, a former dry cleaning establishment, in August 2012. While Aaron’s previous employment was with Alterra, he, Robb and Joe all had previously worked in the wine industry. They settled on the name “Valentine” because it is a first or middle name used in many generations of Robb’s family, including his own middle name.
Their coffee shop itself opened to the public on July 5 of this year. Actually, Robb prefers to call it a tasting room; he says it’s “where a walk-up Italian espresso bar meets a winery tasting room”. This room can seat about 20 people, and business has been very good thus far; let’s all make this place our Valentine! ❅

what’s happening in Washington park“We Love Winter!”by Willie Karidis Branch Manager Washington Park Urban Ecology Center
This past October the Urban Ecology Center at Washington Park held its third annual Autumn Celebration and what a time it was. Kids and families from the neighborhood carved over 100 pumpkins, caramel apples galore, a giant leaf pile to get lost in and a fantastic BBQ provided by our great friends from Washington Park Partners. We love our festivals and truly appreciate the opportunity to bring people together to celebrate the best of Autumn and the wonderful people who have made the Urban Ecology Center a part of their lives.
Speaking of festivals, coming up on January 25th, 2014 will be our annual Winterfest extravaganza. For the past two winters it has never been cold enough to ice skate, will 2014 be the year? Let’s hope so. Besides skating as long as there is enough snow we will sled, snowshoe and ski. Lots of fun for the whole family.
I know, I know it’s a delicate balance between being too cold so you don’t want to spend time outside and that perfect temperature which inspires you to get out and enjoy the best of winter. Here at the Urban Ecology Center we embrace everything about winter. If you are a member you can borrow, skis, snowshoes, skates and sleds. It’s the best deal in town as a yearly family membership is just $35. Your membership goes a long way in supporting programs here at the park and is good at all 3 of our branches those being Menomonee Valley and Riverside Park. Just stop by and say hello to Terrance and he will get you all set up.
This winter we will have all kinds of programs to help you enjoy each day. You’ve never skiied or snowshoed? Not a problem, we will have classes most of the winter showing you how it’s done. Then, with your new family membership you can borrow equipment from us and teach the rest of your family how to do it. Our Young Scientists Club operates year round after school Tuesday through Friday from 4-6 PM and on Saturdays, from 1-4 PM. Activities range from Citizen Science projects to Food Fridays and lots in between. If your kids are between 7 and 12 years old have them join Erick, Rachel and Kirsten for some after school adventure.
The Urban Ecology Center is here to stay. We would love to show you around and introduce you to all our programs, projects and people. Our community is all of you and we are here for you to enjoy. Happy Winter! ❅

The State of Real Estate in Washington Heightsby Mary Jumes, CRS
The Washington Heights continues to maintain its overall stability and is showing signs of market appreciation.
Upon submission of this article, as posted in the MLS (Multiple Listing Service), there are currently 42 active properties on the market; 22 single families, 16 duplexes, and 3 commercial properties. Our sold totals are still on pace to exceed last year’s totals.
We have 65 new neighbors: 47 single family owners, 16 closed sales on duplexes, and the 2 “Harter Bakery” properties have new owners.
We continue to have a wide range of property options, and while we are starting to see positive price increases, it’s still important to consult with your real estate professional to discuss the current market and how it impacts your property. ❅
SOCKS, MITTENS, and HATS, Oh My! Benefit for the Urban Ecology Center at Washington Park
Vliet Street and North Avenue businesses will be accepting donations of NEW socks, mittens and hats for children of all ages to be given to youth attending programs at the Urban Ecology Center at Washington Park. Many children come to the center without these clothing items. Our goal is to collect 500 items so the kids can stay warm during outdoor activities at the center this winter. Donations will be accepted through December 1 at the following participating businesses:
Roots Underground Outfitters (5328 W Vliet) Four Corners of the World Fair Trade (5401 W. Vliet) Nomad Art Gallery (1407 N. 54th St.) The Salvaged Studio & Gallery (1409 N. 54th St.) NEWD Clothing Company (5425 W. Vliet) James Steeno Gallery (5700 W. Vliet) Art & Soul Gallery (5706-08 W.
