The Role of the Emcee The Purposes of an Emcee

• Keep the show moving. Fill up the “dead air” on stage during transitions. • Allow time for the previous routine to strike and next routine to set up. • Be entertaining. • Set up the next routine, so the audience is excited for it. • Let the audience know what is up next. When you know which act you will be introducing, find out a few

interesting about him/her/them and include that in your introduction. Memorize their names and how to say them correctly.

• Scan the stage and make sure the stage is ready for the next act. If a random prop or item is left on stage from the previous act, be sure it is cleared off before you leave the stage. You could clear it off yourself or ask for help (in character) from backstage.

Emcee Do’s • Be prepared (memorized). The best comedians may look like they are being spontaneous, but they are

WELL prepared. Write out your script and practice! • Look professional or in character. (ie: Wear something different than what you would wear to school.) • Be creative. You could incorporate a magic trick or joke, show off a juggling skill, or impersonate a

character. Emcees have many different styles so come up with an idea that fits your personality and talents. • If you need a musical soundtrack playing during your emcee portion, give the .mp3 file to the show director

(as soon as you have it) and before any preview deadlines. • If you have any setup or technical requirements (other than a handheld, wireless microphone) that you will

need help with (ie: microphone stand or a small table), let the director know. Also, you are responsible to ask and find someone to help you who can be backstage. Note that the set-up for an emcee should not be complicated or interfere with the set-up for the next act.

Emcee Don’ts

• Don’t laugh at your own jokes. • Speak too quickly. • Fidget. • Don’t include inside jokes or references that only a few in the audience will understand.

The Timing of an Emcee:

• Go to your position on stage as soon as the previous performers have left the stage. • Begin speaking as soon as the applause has died. • [Possibly] Before your rehearsed script, show appreciation for the last routine by saying their name and

possibly something positive about it. (i.e.: “The Swing Sisters! Weren’t they fabulous!”) • For Showcase and Juggle Jam, emcee bits are 30 seconds to 1 minute long. Longer only with director

permission. • For the Showcase, there will not be time to rehearse your emcee portion at the tech rehearsal prior to the

show because of time restraints, which is why it is very important you either attend the emcee preview meeting (preferred) or set up an alternative time to preview your emcee bit for the Student Directors. Juggle Jam emcees will rehearse at the SECOND dress rehearsal during the full run-through of the show.
