For the students of

Lasien Elementary

School in Badoc, Ilocos

Norte of the Philippines,

that is almost a daily oc-

currence. This elemen-

tary school located in a

mountain barangay, ac-

cessible only by carabao-

dents from families

whose livelihood de-

pended on small-tenant

farming. Life in Lasien

for these children is made

easier by public school

teachers who spend what

little they have to help

these students learn better

by supplementing the

basic necessity of food

and nutrition. One

teacher, Melody Magbual

(no relation to current

Kalipunan President)

made it her mission to

help these children.

When Kalipunan’s Presi-

dent, Rosemarie Ancheta

searched for a Philippine

project, she was led to

Ms. Magbual’s existing

work in the mountain

barangay. Mother Teresa

once said, “If you can’t

goal of the Philippine

project for 2017-2018 .

LASIEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM

Most of the children in

Lasien Elementary School

suffer from either mal-

nutrition or undernourish-

ment. After learning about

Ms. Magbual’s work, Presi-

dent Rose Ancheta reached

out to her and asked how

Kalipunan could help sup-

plement nutritious meals to

the school children. Ka-

lipunan made a commit-

ment to fund the meals for 5

months this year. It kicked

off in January with lunches

served 3 times per week.

The program continued in

February, August, Septem-

ber and December in the

same frequency.

Basic necessities are meager

for these children that some

of them attend school with

bare feet.

workers in Davenport on

January 28th.

When Kalipunan volunteer Julia

Haddon found out about the

situation, she stepped in and do-

nated flip-flops for all the children

as Christmas presents.

Ms. Magbual recently reported

that because of the supplemental

meals Kalipunan funded, the chil-

dren have already shown im-

provement in their weight charts.

Kalipunan plans to continue fund-

ing the lunches through the entire

2018 school year.
