Winter School on Disarmament and Armament Proliferation Control:

International Law, Engagement of Governments and Role of Civil Society

Educational Objectives This all-encompassing programme seeks to strike a balance between legal, scientific and diplomatic issues relating to the broad spectrum of Chemical, Biological, Radio, Nuclear (CBRN) and conventional weapons in a contemporary world. The seminars distinguish the challenges each subcategory of weapons currently face and at the same time the course links disarmament and non-proliferation efforts. International law, international relations and security studies are core subjects. Course Description, Teaching Methods and Practicalities The programme includes thematic seminars (24 hours) and group exercises (6 hours). Thematic seminars taught by experienced professors and leading experts will fully immerse participants in the world of conventional and unconventional weapons and will provide young students with a deeper comprehension of the main arguments having informed the debate since the end of the WWII. Group exercises will include advanced role-playing and simulations conceived to familiarize students with current practices in the field of arm proliferation and control. Participants are recommended to consult the listed preliminary readings prior to sitting to the interactive sessions. All materials will be uploaded on the Web-Platform under UNIMI Ariel Website. Credits: At the end of the course participants will be awarded a final certificate. Active Participation to Lectures (at least 75%) and to Working-group Sessions are compulsory to the acknowledgement of 3 CFU. Eligibility and Application Students currently enrolled to undergraduate courses of GLO, MED, SIE, SPO and to graduate courses of REL and LIN are strongly encouraged to apply for admission. Since course presentations and discussions will be held in English, students are required to provide proof of their skills by means of Language Certifications (IELTS, TOEFL, CAE or others) or by means of brief interviews. A maximum of 30 students will be admitted. Applications open on the 15th June and are due no later than Tuesday, 15 September 2014. Required application materials include: a resume/CV, a statement of purpose (approximately 1 page or 400-600 words in length) describing how participating to the Winter School would contribute to the achievement of your personal, professional or academic goals and English certifications. Partners institutions are Luigi Sacco University Hospital and other national and international organization.
