VOLUNTEER LITERACYTUTORS NEEDED

According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 24% of adults in California are at the lowest literacy level. This means, for example, that they can sign their names, but they cannot fill out information on an application.

The Adult Literacy Program is a free county-wide program that matches English-speaking adults with volunteer tutors for confidential, one-on-one tutoring. Tutors and learners commit to meet for six months, twice a week, and meet at different branches throughout the county. All resource materials are free and training is provided. Volunteers must have good reading and math skills. Experience the tremendous satisfaction of helping an adult improve their reading and writing skills! Become a tutor! Also, if you are part of a local organization that would benefit from hearing about the Adult Literacy Program, contact the Literacy Services Office at the Chavez Central Library in Stockton at 937-7778.

Adult Classes & SportsRALLY DOG TRAINING

Rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is fun and energizing. The canine team moves, at

their own pace, very similar to rally-style auto racing. Rally was designed with

the traditional pet owner in mind, but it can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition.

A rally course includes 10 to 20 stations, depending on the level.

Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. Communication between handler and dog is encouraged and perfect heel position is not required,

but there should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and

handler. The main objective of rally is to produce dogs that have been trained to

behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs, in a

manner that will reflect positively on the sport of rally at all times and under all

conditions. 930930

The City of Lathrop and the Lathrop Youth Advisory Commission (YAC) are working on build-

ing a new teen center and library next to the Lathrop High School. Construction has started and the complex should be open in June 2014.

We need more teen volunteers to help the Lathrop YAC select the types of activities, games and equipment that will be purchased for the teen

center. We also need teens to help with donations, teen center hours, policies and a variety of other important issues. Please help make the Lathrop Generations Center Complex a fun and positive place for your youth and teens in ourcommunity.
