It’s almost winter, Autumn has gone by so quickly. We had plenty of activities from Easter, Anzac Day,

andwich making and lots more coming up.

Easter - Easter was great fun, and we enjoyed

decorating hats and Easter decorations leading up

to April. We then wore them during our special Easter

morning tea, which were delicious Easter eggs and

Hot Cross buns.

Cultural Celebrations - We celebrated St

Patrick’s Day and Harmony Day for our multicultural

residents, which consisted of afternoon tea and

an entertainer. We also did a small quiz where we

guessed the country by their flags.

Anzac Day - was another special

event which was hosted by members

from Parramatta RSL who came out to do the service with us. The residents got involved

by making a wreath from the garden. It was a great opportunity to remember our soldiers

and pay respect to some our former navy residents we have in Terrace.

Cooking - The residents have been wanting to do more cooking-based

activities, so we have increased these to twice a month. This is where we

enjoy no bake cooking activities using other

methods such as pie maker and electric frying

pan. The cooking has also given residents the

opportunity to add their own recipes into the

mix, which is exciting for them.

Sandwich Making - We also held a sandwich making

morning in which a number of residents put a variety of

fillings together which they all had for lunch. Some of the fillings that we had included smoked salmon and avocado, cheese and pickles, sardines, leg ham and tomato and Polish

salami. It bought back memories of their younger days.

Pampering - We are also enjoying manicures and

nail painting days on a fortnightly basis which makes the

residents feel nice. Even the men get involved with nail cutting and hand massages.

Bus Outings - Residents are enjoying their weekly bus outings and we have been going to some

new exciting places, no shopping and lunch days as of yet.

Mother’s Day - was celebrated by having an afternoon tea, music and

exploring the history of how Mothers Day came about. We also reminisced

about how the residents celebrated Mother’s Day and how their children

celebrated them. It was a great day to celebrate all mothers and they each

received a gorgeous gift.

Upcoming Events - Some of the amazing events coming up include

Wilma

My name is Wilma and I was born in the Italian town of Trieste. My mother was

of Yugoslav background and my father was Italian of Hungarian background. I

came to Australia in 1953 and married a fellow Italian, named Giordano. At first, we lived in Brisbane, but later we settled in Sydney. We have two children - my

son Ronaldo and daughter Amanda.

My dear husband and my family visits me here at Grange almost every day, we

have been very close as a family and I love to chat in Italian with my husband.

I still speak fluent Italian, English and languages of former Yugoslavia as well. I love when the staff greets me in these languages, as it brings special memories for me!

I used to work at the Royal Women’s Hospital at Paddington, serving the meals

and assisting the chef.

Giordano and I used to enjoy attending Italian clubs and dancing a lot! We have also travelled to our

beloved Italy a couple of times together.

I am very happy at Courtlands, and enjoy scenic bus outings, cooking pizzas, singalongs and parties.

Recently, we celebrated Italian Cultural Day here, with armchair travel to Italy and that was very special

indeed.

I love singing and often I sing Italian songs in the dining room to my fellow residents and staff around me. What can I say? I am Italian. Singing is part of my soul.

I am very comfortable living in this beautiful place and it feels more like my home. Staff are very kind to me, I am treated very nicely and my Italian identity is very well preserved here. Thank you for your care

and love towards me and my family.

Resident Story

administration Officer Hi everyone! For those who don’t know me, my name is Sonika and I am

the Administration Officer here at Courtlands. I started working for CAC in January 2021, so I am still fairly new to the organisation. This is my first role in aged care; at first it was quite confronting and I didn’t know how I would like it, but as the months have passed, I have come to know the staff and residents and truly enjoy my time here.

As we know, Jahn has sadly left the organisation so I have now been appointed to look after the

rosters for Courtlands. It has been a challenging role, however I have learnt so much in a short

time and am looking forward to growing in this role.

Engaging with the residents and seeing them happy has been a rewarding part of the job and

has allowed me to appreciate the small things in life. It has been lovely to meet and chat with the

relatives of our residents and I am looking forward to meeting all of you in the future.

Thank you to everyone for welcoming me, I hope we can all work together to continue to keep

our residents home a happy and beautiful place. Blessings and best wishes to you all.

Pastoral CareThe Heart - We are fearfully and wonderfully made by our Father in heaven.

How amazing and wondrous is Gods’ design of our bodies. Take the Heart.Your heart is essential for your life. Your heart is about the size of your clenched fist. It lies in the front and middle of your chest, behind and slightly to the left of your breastbone. The heart is a body pump, usually beating about 60 to 100 times per minute and your heart beats around 100,000 times a day. With each heartbeat, the heart sends blood throughout our bodies, carrying oxygen and other important nutrients that all body organs need to stay healthy and to work properly, to every cell. After delivering these, the blood returns to the heart. The heart then sends the blood to the lungs to pick up more oxygen.

If your heart stops beating, in turn no blood gets pumped round your body, so very quickly the rest of your body stops working. Your kidneys, your liver, your lungs, all stop working also.

So... your heart is essential for your life. So is you SPIRITUAL heart. The Bible uses the word “heart” primarily to refer to the ruling centre of our whole person... the spring of all our desires. The heart is seen as the seat of our will, our intellect, our emotions & our feelings. It is a spiritual organ that drives our behaviours.

The heart is so important that the Bible tells us to make it a top priority to protect it from negative influences. One key bible verse is,

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23, NLT)

The bible is full of verses of guidance for our hearts and we can read of spiritual hearts that drive POSITIVITY in our life: -

So, our heart is the most important organ God placed within our bodies. It not only sustains life to our mortal bodies, but the heart can sustain contentment in each day we have left here on this earth, as well as our desire of another life to come. Jesus when giving His famous sermon on the mount, said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matt 5:8). “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. God does not judge us by our outward behaviour or our acts like man does, but by the intents and desires of the heart.” - 1 Sam 16: 7

What wonderful news!! You can have a spiritual transformation of your heart and mind at any time towards this peace that is in God, through Jesus. “For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the LORD, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

So, while God keeps your physical heart ticking, what type of spiritual heart do you have? Gods message to you: “Give me your heart, my child, and let your eyes delight in my ways.” - Proverbs 23:26. And when things do not make sense to our hearts, “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” - Proverbs 3:5. May God bless your heart this Winter season and keep your heart warm with his love and peace.

The bible also describes hearts that drive NEGATIVITY in our lives: -

17 – 23 May was National Volunteers Week. This year the theme is Recognise, Reconnect, Reimagine.

To celebrate, volunteers were invited to our Biggest Morning Tea – as guests rather than helpers!

We Recognise the important work that volunteers do and have appreciated Reconnecting with them

as they have been able to return following the challenges of last year. We are grateful to our volunteers

who assist with church services, art and craft, cooking, music and visiting those who appreciate a

chat. We also recognise that the connection is not only beneficial for our residents but also for the volunteers, with the National Centre for Volunteering noting that “Evidence shows that volunteering

connects us to others in our local communities, to better mental well-being or to potential pathways

to employment. When we help others in our community or give our time to a cause we value, we also

give back to ourselves”

We continue to look to build connections and have been pleased to link with Sydney Multicultural

Community Services who arrange for volunteers to visit our residents from diverse backgrounds.
