Christmas is my favorite time of the year! But I am in the Christmas mode/mood all year as I make and design many of the gifts that I share

with friends and family. Every year the women on my husband’s side of the family each receive one thing I have made for them, and now that has extended to my Riverwood female family too! I have made most of the items in my vast snowman collection and my smaller Santa collection. Something I have fun with is changing someone’s discarded item into a treasure.

My mom always enjoyed baking. She would make around ten different kinds of cookies at Christmas time. One year on Christmas

Day, it was only going to be my husband and me, my mom, and our two daughters. That day my mom wanted to share her baking skills for making Krumkake. This is a Norwegian cookie using a special iron.We had so much fun that a couple of years later, she made her rosettes. This, too, is a Norwegian cookie, using a special iron. My mom passed away a year ago, and I am treasured she could show her baking with my family. My daughters and husband will always remember those two special Christmas Days.

When I was young, Christmas was always a magical time. Not only because of the great gifts we all received, but more importantly, my

family celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. We would get dressed up in our new Christmas clothes, and off to church we would go. On Christmas Eve, the children of the church would perform the service for the congregation. With smiles on our faces and excitement in our hearts, we would tell the good news that our Savior was born. On returning home, we would find more gifts under the tree than when we left. (That must be why it took Mom so long to get to the car.) Santa had come when we were at church! I am so blessed to have had parents who taught me the true meaning of Christmas.

Our family has always gone to the Christmas Eve church service. The tradition of singing Silent Night in a

candlelit church is such a beautiful reminder of why we celebrate Christmas. It is nice to have that time of reflection before all the excitement that follows. As a child, I remember coming home from church to see a deer’s herd by our house. My parents told us they were getting ready to help Santa. I was so excited! Not too long ago, I had the same experience, but as a parent this time. It was so fun to see the deer that Christmas Eve! It brought back a great childhood memory. I received this recipe from a co-worker many years ago, and it is now a holiday favorite.

So many memories are gathered

each year around the tree. The excitement from setting it up and hanging all the special ornaments from years past, to all the love and joy we share around the tree when we gather there. Every year we are sure to take many photos in front of the tree and these have been some of the most cherished childhood memories for all ages! Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

BIG LAKE

Naomi Jacobson (763) 262-4075

The true meaning of Christmas was revealed to me years ago. Christmas found me as a newly single mother of

two beautiful daughters. Trying to juggle two jobs, a house payment, utilities, groceries, and two girls was putting a severe strain on my finances.

Every parent wishes to give their child the best that they can. So it is no wonder that my heart was breaking when I had no choice but to tell my little girls that I could not afford to put any presents under the tree. In the beautiful innocence of a child, my girls told me, “It’s ok, Mom, we have each other.”Later that night, after my girls went to sleep and I could reflect on the Christmas we shared, I cried for not being able to give them what I thought they deserved, but then it dawned on me what a great present God had given me, the gift of love, and I cried for joy. The pure and innocent spirit of a child reminded me that it isn’t about the presents, but sharing the love that Christ has for us, that is Christmas!

Our church has started a tradition of sharing the love by providing random strangers with “Giving Jars.” We save our change throughout the year, and at Christmas, our confirmation students spend an afternoon handing out the filled jars to random people. Each year I am so touched by the people who receive them and the stories that they tell about how much they needed it and the struggles they were enduring. Christmas to me is sharing the love and giving to others. As a family, we now buy Christmas gifts for those in need from our church giving tree, we volunteer for the local Lions and fill food baskets, and have volunteered for the Salvation Army bell ringing and sharing the love of Christmas. Please consider sharing the love at Christmas.
