Paws in Print Brookhaven Animal Rescue League And that’s a Wrap! WINTER 2017 Santa and More! Lucy visited Santa during our Pet Photos with Santa event. As we get ready to wrap presents for the holidays, we are wrapping up 2017 at the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League. It’s been a busy year for BARL, having seen over 1,000 animals just through November – 681 adopted and 349 transported. We’ve also financially assisted in the spay/neuter of another 230 animals owned by people in need and senior citizens. A lot of fundraising had to take place for us to be able to care for so many animals. We are grateful to so many people in Copiah, Franklin and Lincoln counties for supporting these fundraising efforts. We hope to see you at our 2018 events: Cat’s Meow Rummage Sale in February or March (date to be determined), Barkfest on April 7th and our Celebrity Dinner on October 23rd. And, of course, we’ll host Pet Photos with Santa next November. We look forward to many adoption events at PetSense next year; and, this summer we’ll host a Rabies Vaccination Clinic. The summer will also bring about our super fun educational Kids Camp. We hope you enjoy this newsletter and will pass it on to others. Have a Merry Christmas and a peaceful holiday season. Here at BARL, we know we are blessed. Wonder what this child whispers to a BARL dog during an adoption event? Dice at BARL… and now at home.

Lucy visited Santa during our Pet Photos with Santa event.

BARL Gets Flagged for Excessive Celebration at 2017 Celebrity Dinner

Question…where and when, in Brookhaven, can you go and find reindeer, trolls and the legendary rock and roll band, KISS to entertain and wait on you?

BARL’s 14th Annual Celebrity Dinner and Auction, that’s where.

Having been held in late October, this awesome community came together in force once again to support BARL in such a generous and amazing way, eclipsing last year’s efforts.

And the celebrity waiters coming together went all out. From Bat Girl to the Mad Hatter to The Rabbit, everyone there was just mad, mad I tell you. What a blast it was.

Throw a Flag This year BARL was quite excited to have Sarah Thomas as our special celebrity. Sarah’s celebrity status comes from being the first full-time female NFL referee.

Sarah lives in Brandon, MS, and spends at least 17 weeks of her falls and winters officiating NFL football games. So, we were fortunate she was able to fit us into her busy schedule.

Sarah was able to tell her interesting story of how she got started; and, she had quite an interesting story to tell. Thank you, Sarah.

Thanks, also, to the volunteers that helped with this event. Special appreciation goes to Deana Pendley, the event chairman.

Humane Education Benefits… Everyone Children, animals and reading…what a combination. And the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League brought these together as part of BARL’s humane education program. BARL was awarded a youth humane education grant from the Petfinder Foundation, made possible by Build a Bear Workshop and the Build a Bear Workshop Foundation. BARL used the grant to furnish Kind News magazines for 2nd and 3rd graders in Copiah, Franklin and Lincoln counties. That’s over 2,200 students who will receive the magazine multiple times during the school year. Kind News is aligned with national teaching standards and is an eight-page publication that helps children understand and respect animals and think about why treating animals and people with kindness matters. The magazine encourages both empathy and critical thinking in children by celebrating the human-animal bond and helps motivate children to take action to improve the lives of animals. Its appealing design and interactive content help enhance children’s enjoyment of reading, as well as spark critical thinking and thoughtful discussion. In addition, BARL purchased animal-themed books for the school libraries. Topics for the books included pet care, pet adoption and kindness towards animals. BARL believes an effective remedy for decreasing the homeless pet population and improving the humane treatment of animals is through education of our children. Our children, with knowledge, and learned skills, can affect the community where they live now and as they move forward in life. Through education, they will have the proper tools for making a tremendous difference in the welfare and simple existence of all God’s creatures that are vulnerable and defenseless. Shop locally when you can

Shop at BARL’s booth located inside Vendor’s Emporium in Brookhaven. We are always adding something new. If you have any small home décor items for us to sell, please drop them off at the Adoption Center. Thanks to store owner, Rhonda Deer, for providing the booth.

Don’t toss those drink cans Drop off your aluminum cans at BARL’s Adoption Center and we’ll recycle them to raise money for the animals. What an easy way to help the BARL animals and the planet too!

Purchase this tag to help the animals Your purchase of an “I Care for Animals” specialty car tag will help dogs and cats around the state. The money generated through the sale of the tags is awarded to humane organizations in Mississippi. The majority of the funds are designated for spay/neuter projects and BARL has been the recipient of several grants from the “I Care “ fund. Purchase a tag at your county courthouse.

Winterize your doghouse! On cold nights we hope you can bring your dog inside; however, if not, here’s a few tips to keep them warm in their doghouses: ---Place pine straw inside the house. This is a better alternative than hay or blankets. Replace straw, as needed. ---Get the house off the cold ground. Place it on a wooden pallet or something similar.

---The door to the house should be faced away from the prevailing winds. Normally, it is best to face them away from northern winds. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association: Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. It’s a common belief that dogs and cats are resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it’s untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods of time in below-freezing weather.

Happy BARL Animals with their Happy Families

Henley is a 7-month-old

Curr/Hound mix. He’s very quiet

and is very laid back. He’s not

very fond of the shelter and

would love to get adopted soon.

BARL Dogs Still Looking for Homes

Keeper is a beautiful Sheltie/Beagle mix. Inessa is young and energetic.

Beam me up, Scotty! Did you know BARL transports dogs to northern states? No, not via the futuristic, Star Trek method, but by collaborating with other shelters in the south. Together these Southern shelters are able to move thousands of homeless dogs to the northern US. How, do you ask, do the northern states have room for rescued dogs from the south? Well, because they have determined the fix needed to reduce the unwanted pet population in their own states through animal control and some regulations that include pet licensing fees and/or fees for not having pets spayed and neutered. We could learn a lot from these northern states. Can you imagine a time when Mississippi doesn’t have thousands of homeless animals living on the streets and in shelters? Fran, now Frankee, was one of the lucky dogs that BARL sent to Minnesota to find a loving home.
