July 31 — August 2, 2017
Pre-Conference Classes: July 29 & 30, 2017
Conference Registraon: $225 (2nd Registraon only $200)
Come Join the Conversaon! An SGAA Conference is a three-day conversation
and we don’t want you to miss a word! It is not just about wonderful lectures and classes; it is about talking to your peers—not your competi-
tion. Because you might just have the answer to my problem, the encouragement to my concern,
the question I can answer.
It’s a conversaon on all levels. Whether 2 years, 20 years, or 200 years—we are all glass arsts
with the same tools and the same dreams. Raleigh will have—not only the art you love—but business informaon and trends that will help you to be
successful in this art of glass.
The more members and guests who can attend
the Raleigh 2017 Conference, the greater and more varied the conversation. We personally ex-tend our hand to you. Come to Raleigh and shake
hands with us and with each other.
The conversaon will begin in Raleigh but as fel-low SGAA members we must connue the conver-
saon. Open your SGAA Sourcebook and call! Ask quesons, share your victories and your disap-
pointments. We have been helped through the years by our fellow members and it is me to pay
back that benefit.
Come be a part of the conversaon of The Art of
Business and Glass.

Raleigh Stained Glass Tour
The 2017 Annual Summer Conference Stained Glass Tour
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral 715 Nazareth Street, Raleigh
Joseph Beyer of Beyer Studios in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania will lead us through the restoration of the forty Ascension Windows designed and crafted by Paula Himmelsbach Balano which have been repurposed for the new cathedral. Apprenticed to Nicola D’Ascenzo, Balano opened her own studio in 1925. She was one of the first independent women in the field at a time when all studio proprietors were men. Balano designed in the Neo-Gothic style.
Fifty new windows, including two 12’ rose windows have been designed and created by the Beyer Studio for the cathedral. They will also be repurposing an 8’ Balano rose window by enlarging it to 12’. The addition to the window will stay true to the original artist’s style.
Duke University Chapel 401 Chapel Drive, Durham
Duke University Chapel is the fulfilled vision of James B. Duke, founder of Duke University. He insisted that the central building of the campus be “a great towering church which will dominate all of the surrounding buildings.” In less than
three years, S. Owen Bonawit and a team of fifteen craftsmen designed, cre-ated, and installed the entire cycle of more than seventy-seven windows de-picting every major scene in the Bible.
The Noah window includes the name S. Charles Jaekle as designer. As the story
goes, Jaekle included his name without Bonawit’s permission. Jaekle demanded his original drawings and the next day found them ready – as a pile of shredded paper. The windows have been restored by Dieter Goldkuhle and his son Guido at the Kuhl Studios.
CAM—Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh 409 W Martin Street, Raleigh
“CAM Raleigh seeks to curate the most contemporary works of art and design possible – those still emerging, growing, and living. We hope to spark new thinking by cre-ating ever-changing experiences that explore what’s now and nearing.”

Cerficaon Level: Journeyman/CraPsman Credits: 12 Hours Limit: 6 students
Descripon: This class will be aimed at glass arsts with painng experi-ence, but without the confidence/specific experience to tackle re-painng work. Students will study numerous styles of stained glass painng, based on the Munich and English studios. The students will be able to choose from head, drapery and canopy examples, which they will be able to study at close hand and learn the techniques needed to replicate the styles. Although this class will be based on replicang old pieces, the techniques discovered will help in the creaon of new painted glass works. Includes
transportaon from hotel to studio, lunch, and all materials.
Steven Cowan received a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. But, having always had a love and a flair for stained glass through his father, took on a posion assisng his father in the painng department at John Hardman & Co. aPer just one year in the field of engineering. During eight years at John Hardman & Co. Steven was able to learn all aspects of stained glass and mas-ter the, now rare, tradional skills used in creang new windows and preserving and restoring exisng windows.
Two-Day Class—Glass Painting Enamels—Keeping it Simple with Jim Berberich Fee: $450/$400 if registered for the SGAA Conference
Cerficaon Level: Journeyman/CraPsman Credits: 12 Hours Limit: 6 students
Descripon: The use of enamels can add so much color and detail to your stained glass projects. Enamels have been in use as far back as the 17th century, enhancing this applied art form. We will focus on simple methods that have been proven effecve when applying this unique paint. The techniques used in class will allow the Arst to achieve a rich deep color and also a smooth applicaon. We will discuss the good and bad about enamels used in glass painng, and ways to avoid future problems. The class will include demonstraons, class projects and a lot of one on one help, assuring
a be9er understanding and confidence when using enamels.
Jim M. Berberich has worked in the stained glass field as an independent glass arst for more than twenty-five years. “I took up painng on glass to add a third dimension to my work. The Painng has allowed me to be involved in joint works and supply painngs to mulple stained glass studios.” Jim uses the ma9 and spple techniques that have been applied in stained glass painng for centuries including trace lines, mulple shadings and the use of enamels.

Cerficaon Level: Any Level Credits: 6 Hours Limit: 10 students
A vitrigraph kiln is a simple, small kiln which allows you to make your own stringers and murrini for use in other glass work. At McElf GlassWorks, we use the same vitrigraph equipment and processes developed at Bullseye in the early 1990s by Narcissus Quagliata and Rudi Gritsch and we have built up an array of tech-niques specific to firing and incorporang those elements into stained glass work. During the class, students will learn how the kiln is set up and run and have an opportunity to pull their own stringers and murrini.

This introductory workshop presents a new method of combining the funconality of modern architectural glazing substrates, such as insulated glass and safety glass, with the tradion of stained glass arstry. etching, painng, and abrasive etching processes to provide an economical architectural-design soluon.
