Wyndcroft
Mission Statement
The Wyndcroft School is a co-educational
elementary day school for children in grades Early
Education through Eight. The mission of the school
is to offer a rigorous academic program enabling the
child to establish a firm foundation for a happy and
successful future with confidence to succeed in an
ever-changing world. The curriculum is traditional
and designed to develop the whole child. It
emphasizes fundamental skill instruction, character
development, and the pursuit of excellence in
English, history, mathematics, science, foreign
languages and the arts. In a small class setting, the
school endeavors to provide a safe, nurturing
environment fostering creativity, a love of learning,
personal integrity, determination and
respect for others.
New Faces and New Spaces
The 2016-2017 school year welcomed many new faces
- new families, 42 new students, and seven new staff
members.
We also completed another phase of our facility
improvements. A new outdoor classroom that
includes a grass playing field, a seating area for a
group, and the highly regarded Gaga Pit are welcome
additions to the campus. The journey to the
realization of this space has been a long one, and the
children and faculty are enjoying it immensely. As I
peer outside, I am greeted with squeals of delight and
scenes of imaginative and cooperative play which is an
important aspect of a Wyndcroft education. In just a
few weeks’ time this space has enhanced the
educational program for all our children.
The energy outdoors rivals the academic energy I
observe in classrooms. I try to visit classrooms every
day and I note fervent readers, avid writers and
publishers, enthusiastic speakers and presenters,
singers, actors, and designers. Active learning is truly
evident in every classroom - preschool through
eighth grade! I could not be prouder of this vibrant
community: its rich curriculum, stimulating faculty,
and engaged students.
Two New Administrators
Wyndcroft is pleased to welcome two new Administrators to the team.
Kate Borgeson, Director of Admission
Wyndcroft is pleased to introduce Kiernan M. Borgeson (Kate) as the new Admissions Director. Kate has a B.A. from St. Lawrence University and brings a rich history of independent school education, firmly rooted in the ethos of academic excellence and character development.
For more than four years, Kate served as Assistant Director of Admission at The Hill School, recruiting, interviewing, and enrolling prospective students. She coordinates the Big Brother/Big Sister Program as well as the Equestrian Program for the school. Fully immersed in boarding school life, the Borgeson family of five lives in Foster Dormitory on campus. Daughter Tipper joins the Wyndcroft class of 2026 in Pre-K, while siblings Davis and William wait just a little longer to enter Wyndcroft.
Kate enjoys volunteering and spending time with family, and is an avid photographer. Known for her relentless positivity of life, Kate can be found in her office on the second floor of the Early Learning Center.
Robert Evans ‘65, Director of Development
The Wyndcroft School is pleased to announce the conclusion of the search for a new Director of Development. Robert W. Evans, Wyndcroft Class of ’65, has “come home again” in a new role. Robert holds a variety of degrees including a B.A. in Classics from Haverford College, a M.A. in Psychology from Sofia University, and a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law. Robert’s accomplishments are a testament that his educational success truly began at Wynd-croft!
Robert brings a strong commitment to building a community of interest that spans generations along with demonstrated success in identification, solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of alumni and other donors. With particular interest in archival and historical research Robert serves as Vice President of the Pottstown Historical Society and has worked closely with the Archives & History Committee of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. Robert has a fondness for trav-el; he has visited 46 states and 12 European countries by train, and has crossed the Atlantic three times by ship. As we approach our 100th anniversary, we look forward to working with Robert to build financial sustainability for the next century at Wyndcroft.
About the Cover Photo
Congratulations to the 2016 Wyndcroft Field Hockey Team
on completing a “perfect season” going undefeated this year.
Welcome New Faculty
Wyndcroft welcomes three new faculty members this school year.
Julie Bell, Second Grade
Mrs. Bell is a graduate of West Chester University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education. With nine years of teaching experience, she enjoys using small groups to differentiate and personalize instruction in the classroom. She taught fourth grade here in the past and has returned to teach second grade. When she is not in the classroom she loves to spend time with her husband, Pat, and her two children, Bobby and Abby, participating in a variety of outdoor activities such as running races, hiking, biking, and snowboarding.
Kathleen Iacobucci, Upper School Math
Kathleen Iacobucci joins Wyndcroft as an Upper School Mathematics Teacher, focus-ing on the 7th and 8th grades. Mrs. Iacobucci most recently taught at an all-boys pri-vate college preparatory school for nineteen years. Her teaching background includes pre-Algebra to Calculus, but her love of Algebra is what makes her excited to teach middle school students. Mrs. Iacobucci is a graduate of Susquehanna University. She enjoys running, especially half-marathons and recently began working on improving her golf game. Mrs. Iacobucci is a mom to three grown daughters and resides in Phoenixville with her husband, Michael.
Dana Mullen, Second Grade
Mrs. Mullen comes to Wyndcroft having worked in both public and private schools throughout her eleven year career. She has taught first and second grades and has also been a division head of lower school. Mrs. Mullen received her BS in elementary edu-cation and English from the College of New Jersey. Her specialty is language arts, but also loves to teach math just like her dad. It is in the lower grades where Mrs. Mullen thrives. She feeds off the positive and endless energy of her students. She likes to laugh and have fun in the classroom and inspire students to have a life-long love of learning. Mrs. Mullen currently resides at The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania with her husband, Dave, and their two children, Thomas (age four) and Marley (age two). She adores spending time with her family and playing on the playground with her young children. She is an avid baker, enjoys reading on the beach under the hot sun, and crafting in her spare time.
Faculty and Staff
Development
Thanks to the Dr. Kate Wunner Professional Development Fund, members of the Wyndcroft staff were able to attend numerous training opportunities over the past few months.
Your gift to the Dr. Kate Wunner Professional Development Fund helps Wyndcroft provide training for our faculty
and staff to ensure the most up-to-date, creative teaching techniques in our classrooms.

The Lower School Teachers (grades 1-4) attended the Math in Focus seminar over the summer. Math in Focus is the new system of teaching mathematics that has been adopted at Wyndcroft for our Lower School students. By attending this seminar, the teachers as a group were able to explore creative classroom techniques that they can bring back to Wyndcroft. Listening to speakers explain the teaching methods gave them in-depth knowledge of the system to better explore mathematical fundamentals in their classrooms. The teachers are pictured below at left. Mme Ann Risell (Upper School French) attended Merici University in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. While there, she completed an Advanced Intensive Conversation Class and earned a Gold Certificate for her efforts. Wyndcroft students benefit from Mme Risell’s knowledge of conversational French language and culture every day in her classroom. They even get to put their own knowledge of French on display during our annual French Fete, coming up in February. Mme Risell is pictured below at right with her son and husband. Alex Turock (Latin) attended Level One Certification Google Training at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit in December. This training gave Mr. Turock advanced knowledge of the Google Apps for Education to bring back and share with his fellow faculty members at Wyndcroft. He is especially excited about the Flippity App, which will assist teachers at all grade levels to excite and educate their students on a digital platform when teaching fundamental concepts like spelling and vocabulary.

the traditional Pre-Kindergarten Thanksgiving Chapel.
Alumni News
Here’s the latest from Wyndcroft’s Alumni network as well as our alumni parents and past faculty and staff.
Class of 1943
Rita Conger Banning ‘43 Rita, pictured at right, had lunch with Director of Development Robert Evans ’65. She fondly recalls Miss Obie, Headmistress Mrs. Steele, and Mrs. Guss. She reports that she got a solid ground-ing in mathematics and Latin at Wyndcroft, from which she graduated as a 9th grader during one of those brief intervals when Wyndcroft had a 9th grade. When she entered the Baldwin School as a 10th grader she found herself so well prepared that she was placed in math and Latin classes with 11th and 12th graders. After a number of years teaching math and Latin, she decided to enter politics. By way of preparation she earned her JD in 1976 at Villanova Law School, where she was the classmate of Robert Evans. Rita went on to practice law, and in 1980 ran successfully for Montgomery County (Pennsylvania) Commissioner, winning three consecutive terms until she voluntarily stepped down in 1992.
Class of 1968
A note from Jon Evans ‘68: Greetings to all my fellow Wyndcroft alumni, old and new. This is my first time writing to Wyndchimes! Since 1978, after coming up here to attend gradu-ate school at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, I’ve lived and worked in Amherst, with visits to Pottstown once or twice a year to see family. I’m a financial writer by day, and hob-bies include the study of the financial markets and singing with Valley Light Opera, a local musical theater company performing mainly Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. Wyndcroft got me off to a great start in life with a solid academic grounding and personal mentoring – courtesy of Mr. Snively – that I still look back on and appreciate. I especially remember how well-prepared I was in English grammar. After I’d graduated from Wyndcroft and moved on to The Hill School, one segment of our ninth-grade English class covered grammar. I’d seen it all before at Wynd-croft and aced the test with the highest score in the class. (I think that was the only time I achieved that distinction at Hill; the competition there was pretty fierce.) I occasionally see Wynd-croft classmate George Federman at Hill reunions, and I cor-respond with Richard Albright, who was my best friend through most of my time at Wyndcroft. Would love to hear from other classmates and friends.
Class of 1985
Mindy Menkowitz Scheier ‘85 founded the nonprofit Runway of Dreams to bring affordable and fashionable adaptive clothing to children with disabilities. Now a major clothing line will partner with her. The Tommy Hilfiger organization has announced that it will join Runway of Dreams in the first-ever collaboration to bring affordable adaptive mainstream clothing directly to consumers. The collection includes 22 pieces available in children’s sizes for boys and girls—and the garments cost the same as Tommy Hilfiger’s existing children’s line. Mindy hopes that this will be the first of many such collaborations with mainstream clothing lines.
Class of 2010
Wyatt Fabian ‘10 was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Men’s Soccer All-America Third Team at Franklin and Marshall College. This is his fourth postseason honor after being named to the All-Mid Atlan-tic Region and All-Centennial Conference (CC) First Teams, as well as an ECAC All-Star this offseason. The junior defender was a stalwart on the backline after starting in all of the Diplomats 23 contests. He accumulated a goal and four assists on the year while anchoring a defensive unit that held the second-lowest goals against average mark in the conference at 0.79. Wyatt is pictured at left below.
Class of 2011
Lehigh University sophomore Men’s Soccer forward Mark For-rest ’11 garnered the team's Athlete of the Year Award, which is awarded to the student-athlete who makes the most outstanding contribution to the athletic success of the team. Forrest led the team for the second-straight season in goals with a total of seven this past season. He also posted a team-high tying four assists as he led the team with 18 points. He also tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals and one penalty kick goal. Mark is pictured at right below.

Memories of My Time at Wyndcroft Dick Peach, Class of 1965
I attended Wyndcroft from the middle of third grade (1959) through eighth grade
(1965). I have many fond memories of those years and believe strongly that the
education and personal growth I experienced during that period has served me well. I
was pleasantly surprised and flattered when my classmate Robert Evans, Wyndcroft’s
new Director of Development, emailed me and asked me to write something about
my career and my memories of Wyndcroft.
It has been over a half century since I attended Wyndcroft, so my memories are for
the most part very hazy. But there are a few instances that I recall as though they
occurred yesterday. I started at Wyndcroft in the middle of third grade as the
principal of Lower Pottsgrove Elementary insisted that my parents find other
arrangements for me. The first thing that happened on my first day was my parents
and I met with Mr. Carlisle Snively, the Headmaster. At that meeting he looked at
me and said, impassively, that my parents were making a great sacrifice to send me to
Wyndcroft and that it was a no-nonsense kind of place. As of that moment I feared
him, and I am sure that was the intent. (I later learned that my father took on the
duties of Treasurer of Wyndcroft to help pay my tuition.) For many years after, Mr.
Snively had a great influence on me, and over time the only fear I felt was of his
disapproval. If my grades started to slip, he would take me aside and tell me, again,
impassively, that I was not living up to my potential. He was not angry nor did he
raise his voice. He was way ahead of his time in terms of motivational psychology.
In addition to being Headmaster and Latin and English instructor, Mr. Snively was
our coach and referee on the playing field. During the summer he was the manager of
the swimming pool at the Brookside Country Club. He taught me how to swim with
his unique “bobbing” technique, which over time made you feel quite comfortable
with your head under water and with exhaling through your nose. I used that
technique to teach all three of my daughters how to swim.
We had Halloween parties and occasional dances, but as I recall the boys were way
too timid to ask a girl to dance. We had assemblies and sang songs like “Oh Susan-
na”, “The Yellow Rose of Texas” and “Row Row Row Your Boat” as a round. Eighth
graders had to recite a poem at those assemblies. “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy
Evening” by Robert Frost was a favorite. Finally, the school year ended with Field
Day with the Blue Team versus the Gold Team. The events I recall are the high
jump, long jump, and baseball throw, but I am sure there were others.
