there is nothing better than a weekend away to relax mind and body and give you that breathing room we all think we don’t need. Between busy work and school schedules, sports matches most weekends (especially if you are part of the rugby fraternity) life can become a blur. well, i know i am there: frazzled, tired and just getting through every day… and living for Sundays where my soul feels alive again for those few quiet with God minutes in church. not LiVinG ... just surviving!

Ok, so back to the not realising you need a weekend away ‘til you take it bit! Don’t underestimate the value of waking up at 6.30am and sitting with your feet in the sand while watching the sun throw its rays over the (in our case) river mouth that separates you from the Dokodweni Beach, with a coffee (in ‘n blik beker) just taking in the moment! Yes, we live in a holiday town, and yes…wow it’s really beautiful, but i think you rarely reALLY play and relax where you live, so step out! we took a short, 45 minute away break at the rustic the Hatchery, with the FAB team. what a weekend! Memories made, tick!

that holiday you know you need: book it, even if it is only for a short stay. Just KnOwinG you have something to look forward to will allow you to persevere till then!

till next edition, may your days be long and restful with great breaks waiting ahead.

From thE mdeState Hoteli am very happy to report that the Mondazur resort estate Hotel has been sold by Peermont to Fairtree Hospitality real estate Private equity Fund (“the Fund”). this Fund is a first-of-its-kind South African investment vehicle that focuses on leveraged acquisitions of diversified portfolio of hospitality properties with positive cash-flows and significant capital appreciation potential which are positioned to benefit the growth in the South African tourism industry. the Fund’s primary focus areas are Southern Africa and europe.

the name of the San Lameer Hotel will change and will be managed by an associate of the Fund – Providence Hospitality & Property Management. Providence has identified Marc Gers to be the general manager of the San Lameer Hotel. the new owners will look to refurbish the bar; restaurant and reception/common areas of the hotel as soon as possible following transfer – aiming to be ready for the December 2015 season.

their vision is to give the Hotel guests and estate residence and homeowners an experience equal to the best cafes and restaurants of the country, a place to meet, relax and enjoy great food and service, all in a modern, upmarket venue. As soon as the position of the Hotel has been re-established and operations and

business streamlined, the new owners will look to increase the number of rooms from 40 to about 70. this is expected to happen in 2017. the Hotel will possibly be rebranded as the San Lameer resort Hotel & Spa. the new owners will also look to strengthen relationships with the HOA, Golf Club and residents/homeowners to continue to improve San Lameer as an estate and destination.

la MainMeanwhile, La Main, the provider of cleaning services on the estate, was also sold to the new owners of the San Lameer estate Hotel.A new managing couple, Franco and nina, has just arrived on the estate and will reside onsite whilst managing La Main.

Boots, slippers, hot drinks and blankets… winter woollies and sub-zero temperatures. we have very little of this on the sunny

South Coast. we can pride ourselves as an all year round sunny holiday destination.

However this is also the time of year for refurbishment and re-construction of the villas after the busy seasons we have had. we need to re-assess and modernise the villas that have not had much refurbishment lately. examples are that all villas should have flat screen tVs, up to date appliances and comfortable modern furniture.

if Villa rentals want to increase tariffs, the product offered to the guests should

be appealing and good value for money. there are many other accommodation establishments that offer a good value and that means that San Lameer needs to continue to be front of line with not only beautiful surroundings, but also comfortable and enticing accommodation.

in the following months Villa rentals will be assessing the villas, so please expect emails regarding washing of curtains, purchasing of new appliances and basic upgrading. Please pop in and join us for a cup of tea and a chat. we would love to hear your ideas and suggestions all in order to make San Lameer a better place to stay. this is both an investment for yourself as well as for the guests who frequently visit your villas.

we also give a warm welcome to eva, who most of you know from La main. we wish her all the best. You will be hearing a lot from her in the coming months as she will be responsible for quality control in your villas.

Yours in Villa rentals,

it is amazing how quickly time flies down here on our little stretch of paradise, San Lameer. Just a few short months ago we were in the heat of

summer and now we are winding our way through cooler, shorter days and preparing for chilly winter nights.

Personally autumn is my favourite time of the year on the natal South Coast, the strong north easterly wind starts to ease off and the land breezes start. the sea cleans up and the rumours of sardine sightings start to surface.

even though it is my best time of year, it also means we are going into the driest time of year. And considering the poor rainfall we had in 2014 and early 2015, we are officially in a drought cycle on the entire Kzn coast.

Droughts mean our plants go into stress, our wildlife has a harder time searching for food and we as the custodians of the planet need to make try mitigate these natural cycles in nature. One way we can deal with drought is by planting drought resistant plants and in particular, Aloes.

i have put a few common questions and answers i get down to summarise Aloes.

are all aloes indigenous?no, Although a large number of species occur naturally in SA, we have only 125 different aloes species out of the 325 that occur globally. Our favourite indigenous aloe on the estate and surrounding sand dunes is the Aloe thraskii or dune aloe.

Which aloes are suitable for small gardens? Many of the modern hybrid aloes grow into small clumps of multi crowned plants with

short leaves and taller flower stems. the blooms stand out well above the foliges and put on spectacular display for months on end. Look for aloes like “Hedgehog” and “Porcupine” as they are perfect examples of the new generation hybrids.

is there a difference between hybrid aloes and species aloes?technically the difference is that species aloe are found growing wild in their natural habitat, while hybrids are bred by the hand of man in a nursery or garden environment. Occasionally natural hybrids occur or are found where 2 similar species overlap in the wild and pollinate each other and a hybrid is formed. Purists will argue that species should be kept as pure as possible but with the proliferation of hybrid aloes on the market. it is difficult to stop the distribution of them as they general are superior in flower, more colourful and offer better value for money.

Do all aloes flower in winter? Most aloes flower in autumn and winter but some species and hybrids bloom at other times of the year. Aloes from tropical Africa bloom predominantly in summer and this extends the flowering season in the garden. Our local Aloe cooperi, of which we have a few on the estate, flower from December to March.

What are climbing aloes?Climbing aloes like Aloe tennior are more like rambling aloes. they have thin wiry stems that often require some means of support to keep the plant growing upright. in nature this comes from other trees or shrubs, rocks or cliff faces. As garden plants, these aloes are useful for fences and trellises or for cascading down a bank

What are the most common diseases or pests to look out for on an aloe?Aloes are reasonably pest and disease resistant, hence we plant them a lot. However, the 2 most common diseases on the aloes we have on the estate are white Aloe Scale and Aloe rust.

the white scale are tiny insects which live on both surfaces of the leaf and need to be treated with Oleum, Malasol Aphicide and Kemprim.

the rust is a fungal disease that causes black or rust coloured lesions on both surfaces of the leaves, treat with Funginex or rosecare 3.

As you can see, aloes are pretty diverse and becoming a more popular plant in the landscapes on San Lameer due to their hardiness and ability to withstand drought, yet provide a blooming good show of colour in winter….and sometimes summer.

Keep warm this winter and remember to always reduce, re-use or recycle when at San Lameer or at home. Feel free to drop off your recyclables at our recycling center opposite the contractors gate.

Kind regards

Ben Robertsleitch landscapes

the award winning Camelot Spa San Lameer, the only true Spa on the South Coast, brings together all the virtues of water therapy, traditional

beauty treatments and specialised wellness treatments in one place to create complete serenity and calm to address a very real need for relaxation and recuperation from stress in today’s society.

if you choose your Spa correctly, a visit will enable you to recharge your batteries, attend to your well-being and get your mind body and soul back in shape. this is achieved in an environment that is conducive to relaxation and the skills of correctly trained therapists who know and understand the anatomy and the treatments that they offer enabling them to help heal the body and ease the mind.

Camelot Spa San Lameer uses a combination of water, steam and treatments taking advantage of the beneficial effects of hot steam on the skin and lungs that have

tHe BeneFitS oF Steam and water aS weLLneSS treatmentS BY BOnnY riCHArDSOn – CAMeLOt SPA SAn LAMeer

been recognised since antiquity, to enhance the effectiveness of the treatments. this spa has the only rasul Chamber in the country which includes a built-in cold pool and twinkling LeD lights. the humid heat (steam) results in the easy flow of perspiration from the pores of the skin, leaving skin cleansed and soft and the body to detox. the mineral mud you apply to your skin stimulates the circulation and detoxifies the skin. As the temperature of the body begins to rise, the blood vessels dilate, which means the heart doesn’t need to work as hard to pump the blood around and the muscles relax. the brief period during which the body temperature is raised increases resistance and the excessive perspiration which ensues helps to detoxify the body. A dip in the cold pool in the rasul chamber after the steam contracts the blood vessels and increase the blood flow pumping oxygen into the heart, lungs and brain. You will feel energised, the joints loosen up and become more supple making the body is more receptive to other treatments.

the floatation pool has music playing from underneath the water and flickering candles allowing your body to enjoy the ultimate relaxation while your mind can meditate. it is said that 20 minutes in this pool has the equivalent benefit of 6 hours of sleep. the Spa also has 2 Hydrobaths in which the water provides an extremely sensory experience with jets of water massaging the surface of the skin while you relax plus a multi-jet shower energises and enables the clients to easily wash off the wraps and scrubs. After your treatments you are taken to a beautiful relaxation area with a magnificent view of the lagoon, soft music to enhance the relaxation and homemade biscuit’s to satisfy the taste buds.

we invite you to partake in the professionalism and dedication at Camelot Spa where each therapist places their heart and soul in every treatment, offering “pure escape for body, mind and soul”.

i am delighted and extremely proud to introduce our new brand, San Lameer resort Hotel & Spa.

we are extremely excited about the prospects of running a hotel of this calibre on such a prestigious estate and look forward to implementing many exciting plans to restore the hotel to its former glory by improving the physical product, upgrading the facilities and entrenching a culture of consistent and impeccable service delivery to our valued Guests.

we are pleased to announce that we intend renovating the bar and restaurant during this low season to compliment

the fabulous newly renovated conference and banqueting facilities as well as the beautiful hotel rooms. Our hope is to have the renovations complete by end October 2015 should all go according to plan.

we look forward to working closely with the San Lameer Master Home Owner’s Association as well as all stakeholders to add value to the estate offering.

Attie and his team from maintenance did a great job in replacing the practice net on the first tee. we decided to use steel

poles and a frame at the top of the net to avoid it from sagging. the finished product is of a much better quality and visually more attractive. the extended path on hole 13 is complete and it looks fantastic.

the best new addition to the course is the completion of the bridge between hole 15 and 16. we replaced the cranky wooden structure and the new version is safer and a lot quieter and it will also give that little extra privacy to the homeowners above.

we have done some landscaping on the area driving from the main road to the 13th tee. the same plants are repeated on both sides of the path and it compliments the visual effects.

the clearing of the bushes in the area right of hole 5 and left of hole 17 is done. the holes from the tee are no longer intimidating and players will be more confident taking out their drivers.what a great way to start your weekend at San Lameer by attending our Pizza evenings. Our oven is in operation every Friday from 15h00 – 18h00 and has been well supported. we would like to thank homeowners for their support

and it definitely creates a superb atmosphere at the clubhouse.

San Lameer and Southbroom had their first interclub competition. Both teams came head to head in a betterball competition which was held at San Lameer. this event was all about making new friends, building camaraderie and creating good relationships with our neighbouring course.

Southbroom had a fierce team of 48 players against San Lameers’ 20. As the initial hosting club of this event we were happy to set the rules for the tournament. Due to the odd numbers, we worked out an average and we are ecstatic to present to you, San Lameer as the winning team in this Challenge. it was a very close call, our 38 Points against Southbroom’s 37.83 proved just enough. the prize giving was well supported and Steven and the pizza oven worked hard, with a whopping 48 pizzas baked to perfection in 2 hours.

thank you to all the San Lameer members who participated in the event.i am proud to announce that our San Lameer ladies have now joined a league team and we have our own uniform when participating. Please see below feedback from Linda rybicki who represents San Lameer.

“San Lameer Country Club made history this weekend. For the first time ever, we Ladies here are now part of the KZnLPGA. the Southern region executive has agreed that San Lameer and Port edward can join and form a combined league team. we will however be wearing our own club’s uniforms.thank you Meyer and the Committee for allowing this to happen and for the exquisite uniforms we are able to wear. i must say that we had numerous Ladies comment on how beautiful and modern our uniform was.” - Linda

As a club we always support golf development as much as we can, so we often give lost property or sponsored clubs to our caddies and a local sports develop company for the under privileged. Many of our members have kindly sponsored their old clubs to these charities and we appreciate it very much. we were very blessed with three families giving their old clubs to the club to distribute. thanks to Marie robinson, Sheldon Supra and Jurgen Schneider for their used clubs and bags, it is very much appreciated.

we are privileged to be in the position to be able to let you know that we are replacing 5 of our most problematic carts with 5 brand new Yamaha carts. we are hoping to have an additional 5 by the end of november, which

tiMe flieS WHen you are HaVing fun!Dear Home owners, members and guests,We are halfway through another year and the club continues to grow from strength to strength. a lot has been to done to increase the rounds joined by a golfing experience second to none. will mean that by December we’ll have 10 out of our 35 carts replaced.

we had the divers come and dive for some balls in our dams and they managed to take out another 4600 balls from selected dams. Caroline Majola soaks and scrubs every single one of them and then grades them into different packs this process takes her about a week. it is scary to see the condition of some of these balls and that some people actually still tee these balls up. Our tennis club has officially started and we had a great turnout of 9 players. everyone had so much fun and it is a great social get together. if you don’t have rackets and balls, don’t let that keep you away – we have enough to keep the courts occupied.

Spectators are welcome, bring your blankets and chill on the grass with a glass of wine.

Please take note of the following important golf Days and events:the Dale Hayes Classic 9 June Ladies Seniors 20 July team Challenge 13 – 15 AugustOrigins of Golf 17 – 23 August

we strive to give you the best product and service and encourage everyone to give us feedback and suggestions, it is extremely important to us to ensure you continuously enjoy your facility.

we look forward to see you back at the club soon.

Happy golfing.

SanlaMeer’S nature

During the last week of April our juvenile Crowned eagle demonstrated her ability to fly considerable distances around the

estate. On occasion she has even ventured into the Bluegum trees on the other side of the main road. At the age of almost 6 months (hatching date 19 October) she is reaching that stage of her life when the parents will feed her less in quantity and less frequently, so that she can develop the compulsion and ability to hunt on her own in her March to total independence.

Already the adults are depositing food on trees some distance from the nest in an attempt to persuade her to leave the area where she has been accustomed to having her food delivered. So far she is resisting and on 16th April i watched for over an hour as the adult male called her to a tree near the rental offices for her lunch. However, she steadfastly declined his invitation, shouting incessantly at him to deliver the food. Finally he gave in and deposited half a dassie on the nest for her.

As is the custom with these birds, he dropped the dassie carcass and she instantly covered it with her wings. this is called “mantling over the carcass”. instinct teaches her to do this just in case he decides to take it back. the male then flew off after spending only 45 seconds at the nest on his delivery mission.

the juvenile is in excellent condition and will become more adventurous during the month of May when she will mostly spend time in the trees on the 17th fairway and even bath in the stream that runs alongside it.
