Dear Fellow Members,

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season

and were able to enjoy your family and friends,

wherever your travels took you! Now that we’re all

back together in this beautiful paradise of ours, it’s

time to enjoy our golf and tennis, all the activities

available throughout the days and evenings at the

Club, and most of all, each other.

January 15th is upon us and it’s been fi ve years

since we became member owned. It’s such an excit-

ing time to be a member of such an outstanding

club. You, our members, make this club such a spe-

cial place. We all expect and demand a good value

here, and we so enjoy our culture as it has evolved,

sophisticated and elegant, yet still smart and simple.

We cherish the time we spend together with old

friends, and we have plenty of opportunities to meet

new friends. Shadow Wood is indeed a very special

place.

Th e weather has been spectacular and the Club

is ready to provide you with another year of won-

derful experiences. Th ere are plenty of activities for

everyone and we’re trying some new things to keep

you happy and out of your kitchens! I hope you get

to try the “Burger Night on the Terrace.” Chef Rich

has a lot in store for us this season, so be prepared

to ENJOY!

Early reports for year-end fi nancials are outstand-

ing, and we have just come off our most successful

year as member-owned. We had our best December

in club history and all indications are for another

very successful season. Brian has built a strong, sta-

ble and very talented management team dedicated

to serving us with the highest quality of service and

professionalism. Th eir commitment to improving

member experiences is exceptional. Club activities

and usage are up on just about every front and we

have a lot of happy members having a great time

with one another.

We continue to look for new and engaging op-

portunities for member activities. Th ere are plenty

of occasions for all of us to be involved in a host of

golf and tennis events. Our social calendar is robust

and fi lled with activities to delight you.

Currently we have plans in progress to complete

the South Course renovation next summer. Th e

voting is currently going on and we are hopeful for

member approval. Th e front nine improvements are

receiving rave reviews from everyone.

And now it’s time to say “thank you.” Th is will be

my last newsletter article. It’s hard to believe that my

tenure as your President is nearing the end. I am so

honored and humbled at the responsibility and trust

you have put in me over the past two years. Th ank

you for all the support you have given me and the

Board as we continue to grow a culture “where peo-

ple are proud to belong.”

Dear Shadow Wood Country Club Members,Happy New Year to all of you and your families! On behalf

of your entire team at Shadow Wood, we hope 2015 brings you joy, friendships, good health, and lasting memories!

As we reflect back on 2014, it is rewarding to reminisce about the memories that were created and the fun we shared while at the club. 2014 was a record year for the club on many fronts!

Financially, the club exceeded its goals. Member satisfaction is high. We conducted an Annual Member Satisfaction Survey. Of the members who completed the survey, 98% rated their experience as satisfied or better.

We started the year off with a bang by selling out our New Years Eve Party. This was the trend for 2014, as all of our club functions, parties, dances, golf, social, and tennis events hosted record participation. We finished the year off with two fantastic holiday dinner parties. Between the Preserve Holiday Dinner and the Holy Ball at the Brooks campus, there were over 340 members celebrating their holiday season at the club.

During the summer months, our team of employees were challenged to complete the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge.” The members of Shadow Wood showed their support by giving in excess of $7,000 to the ALS Association. Our team came together and produced a dynamic video accepting and taking the challenge.

The club committees were fully attended and each committee contributed valuable recommendations to the Board of Directors on how they would like to see the club improve in the future. The Board of Directors meetings were extremely positive and the Board is focusing all efforts on long term planning.

The golf courses overall were in solid shape. As the courses

are maturing and starting to show their age, it is evident that it takes them longer to recover from extreme weather conditions and high cart volume. This is most evident towards the latter part of April and May. The membership collectively plays 60,000 rounds between January and May each year. Other clubs in the local area have transitioned from 419 Bermuda to Celebration Bermuda. Celebration Bermuda offers a dark green colored grass that is drought resistant, quick growing, and can mask/overgrow other types of mutated grasses. In the summer of 2014, it was decided to renovate the front nine holes of the South golf course as a test to see if Celebration Bermuda would be a viable option for our fairways moving forward. It is especially rewarding to see how our team has taken the challenges on the golf course, and turned them into a positive plan for improvement moving forward. The renovation came in on time, under budget, and conditions were better than expected. A winning combination. We are actively planning for the improvement of all of our golf courses by following the “Master Plans” created by architects, Robert Cupp and Art Hills.

As of December 31st, Shadow Wood CC membership was as follows:

Golf – 845 Executive – 23

Senior – 25 Sports – 102 Social – 126

There was no turnover at the Senior Management level. The managers have excelled in their respective associations. Director of Agronomy, Eric Ruha was the immediate Past President of a 350 member Everglades Golf Course Superintendent Association. Executive

Chef, Richard Crisanti was voted “Executive Chef of the Year” by the SW Florida American Culinary Federation for the second year in a row. This was the first time a Chef won this award back to back in the history of the chapter. Membership Director, Danita Osborn was voted to Membership Directors’ Association Board of Directors and is the Website & Communications Chair.

We made great strides in improving the image and overall member experience in several areas of the operation to include: Making significant investments in member service and amenities by adding a LPGA Teaching professional, an additional Executive Sous Chef and a Club Manager for the Preserve. Our managers now have a complete understanding of my vision of how their presence and attention to detail can enhance our clubs’ events. Working directly with our team has allowed me the opportunity to portray my own feelings about how a manager needs to lead their team and service our membership. “Plan your work and work your plan” and be “Visible.” The hourly employees have taken an ownership role in their daily activities. The general spirit of the staff for 2014 was upbeat, positive and excited about the upcoming 2015 season.

Shadow Wood Country Club has built a fantastic reputation of providing a quality experience, a welcoming, friendly atmosphere where members, guests, family, and employees alike enjoy spending time together.

Our entire team is fully dedicated to the idea that outstanding customer service and member experience is one of the ways Shadow Wood can differentiate itself from other clubs. As a team, we are committed to make each visit you make to the club memorable. We have a full calendar of fun activities for 2015.

Th e Golf Staff wishes everyone a Happy and Healthy 2015!

We are excited about this coming year’s golf programs and re-

main dedicated to off ering a golf experience at Shadow Wood

CC that our members can be proud of.

Th e golf events schedule for the next few months is full

and off ers a variety of social and competitive options. Th ese

events serve as exciting opportunities for members to interact

and are an important element in the culture of Shadow Wood Country Club. We

are grateful for the participation from our members in the annual events and will

continue to fi nd ways to make every event special.

Th e Golf Shops remain stocked with the fi nest available equipment, apparel,

and accessories. Stay tuned to your email and club communications for numerous

Demo-Day announcements. We enjoy hosting multiple vendors and the chance

to spend some personal time with our members who are looking for some assis-

tance with adding new equipment to their golf bags. As always, the SWCC golf

shop is your golf shop and the staff is here for you. So, please let us know how we

can assist with your shopping experience.

Th e Shadow Wood CC Golf Academy has started the season strong! As you have

seen, Th e Academy introduced and facilitated numerous new and benefi cial instruc-

tional programs. Th ese programs have seen tremendous support and their reviews

have been extremely positive for those who made the commitment towards improv-

ing their golf! With multiple PGA and LPGA certifi ed instructors on staff , our mem-

bers have numerous resources available to assist them with their golf games. Th e

Academy will continue to off er a variety of forums for learning, including: clinics,

multi-day schools, guest-instructor seminars, private lessons, and more. Golf is cycli-

cal and tendencies often creep in and out of our game. However, with the wealth of

knowledge and experience existing in the Academy staff , we look forward to off ering

specifi c insight about improvements in your game. So contact the Golf Shop soon,

schedule your next golf lesson, and have more fun!

In closing, on behalf of the entire golf staff , Happy New Year! We appreciate

all of your support and look forward to ensuring continual improvement in your

Dear Shadow Wood Country Club Members,

Th is past year was very exciting for your golf course maintenance team. Th roughout the summer

and fall we accomplished many projects and upgrades. I would like to highlight a few of them that you

are sure to notice.

Th e hard work and detail that was put into the renovations for the front nine South Golf Course

have been met with much fanfare. Th e new Celebration Bermuda grass on tees, fairways and ap-

proaches looks much more uniform and consistent. Th e main two acre driving range tee near the South

putting green was also re-grassed to avoid over seeding and give a feel for the turf that we are converting

to. Th e growth and recovery of Celebration to date has been very impressive.

Th e complete rebuild of the 6th green complex on the South course was a welcome change. While

the hump was eliminated in the middle of the putting surface, the new green still provides plenty of

challenges. We also enlarged many of the smaller tees that struggled in the winter months and built per-

manent forward tees. We are looking forward to completing the rest of the courses in the years to come.

Th e North and Preserve received all the necessary agronomic practices to gear them up for seasonal

play. Your golf course maintenance team continues to focus on the details and make the courses the

best they can be each and every day.

Our mission has always been to give you the best possible playing conditions with each round you

play and step it up even more for special events. We want you and your guests to be “wowed!” Th ank

you for your positive comments and support. We look forward to seeing you on the courses this season!

From the Director of Merchandise … Jeanette FultonHappy New Year from the Golf Shop Staff!

Fashion plays an important role in the game of golf. Style is about thinking outside the tee box. When you’re looking good while playing good, what a feeling!

I am excited to see the fashions that will take us through the year of 2015. In January I am attending the PGA Show in Orlando. As a member of the Association of Golf Merchandisers, I will be able to see early product previews, attend educational seminars, and see the latest in fashion updates during the show. I look forward to seeing all the latest offerings from the vendors.

This spring, color is the new black! Look for a color palette filled with bright blues, greens, and yellows balanced against traditional blacks and grays. Cotton is making a comeback but tech fabrics remain the number one favorite. No ironing and lots of play! We will see clean, sophisticated aesthetics.

As no two snowflakes are identical, you will find this true for your golf shops. Having two shops allows us to offer a broad spectrum of apparel, shoes, and equipment.

The 9 hole ladies can visit either golf shop for colorful apparel for the “Garden Party” golf event on January 27th. It is sure to be the tee party of the season!

As the winds of March blow in, the Ladies Legacy will arrive March 3rd and 4th. You will not want to miss a single moment of the good times that we have in store for you!

As the clock clicked over to 12:01 am on

January 1st, I realized something: I have been

the Tennis Director at Shadow Wood for over

12 years! In 2002 when I came over from the

east coast, no one knew what Shadow Wood

was going to become. I was taking a chance. It

ended up being a fantastic decision!

Th ere were tough times towards the end

of the developer years but many of us stuck

it out, knowing the members would win out

sooner or later. Shadow Wood has now be-

come one of the best country clubs in in the

state, if not the country. Th e club will con-

tinue to improve and stay on the cutting edge.

I will do my best to continue to improve the

Tennis Department. I would be honored to be

here for twelve more years.

Th e fall tennis season has been very active

with leagues, boot camps, and events. Th e

courts are hopping and everyone is having

fun. New merchandise is arriving daily and

the Tennis Shop is looking great. Look for a

big sale the week before Valentine’s Day. We

are gearing up for an exciting winter season

with many fun-fi lled events and programs.

that encourage new players also, so come by

TENNIS TIP From Shadow Wood Racquet Tech, Al Piscitelli

Five Causes of Tennis Elbow1 Racquet: Th e weight, length, stiff ness and balance of your racquet all

aff ect the stress it places on your arm. Lightweight (less than 10 ounc-

es), extended-length (longer than 27 inches), extra stiff (RA greater

than 60) and head-heavy (more than 5 points HH) racquets can all

increase your chance of tennis elbow.

2] String Selection: Th e pros love polyester strings for added spin and

power, but they’re too stiff for many recreational players. Natural gut

and synthetic strings - or a hybrid of both - are all easier on the arm.

3] String Tension: If you string your racket in the 60s or higher, you’re

putting yourself at risk for tennis elbow. Th e best tensions for your

elbow (in pounds) are: high 50s (for natural gut), low 50s (multifi la-

ment synthetic) and high 40s (monofi lament synthetic).

4] Grip: A grip that’s too large or too small may force you to hold onto it

too tightly, which puts stress on your tendons.

5] Technique: A stroke that stops mid-swing, relies too heavily on fore-

arm muscles or is too “wristy” upon impact can all lead to arm pain.

Keep in mind each player is unique based on physical characteristics,

the way he or she plays and the level they play at.

Wood for a free tennis clinic and

play day. Th e high energy clinic was

hosted by the Shadow Wood Tennis

Professionals, Dave Dooley, Scott Harrington and Rob Vinal. Jared

Kalpin, the Tennis Director at West Bay came over to lend a helping

hand. At the end of the day, all kids received a Shadow Wood knapsack

which contained a lot of good stuff . Many kids vowed that they will

now play tennis forever. Community service is always fun!

Dear Shadow Wood Members,

Welcome to a new year at

Shadow Wood Country Club!

Our 5th anniversary of being

member-owned seems to have

come so quickly and it reminds

me of all the growth and success

our Club has seen over the past

5 years.

Th e membership numbers fi nished strong in

2014. We welcomed 71 new members and had a low

attrition rate of just 3%. Th e support from members

in the recruiting eff orts has played an instrumental

part in that growth. A survey of new members shows

that over 55% of new members heard about Shadow

Wood through current member referrals. Let’s keep

that trend going in the new year so we can continue

to replenish our membership with friendly faces!

Th rough our new member survey, we have also

found that 92% of new members felt welcome at

Shadow Wood from the beginning. I know this is in

large part due to the Ambassador program that has

been so well supported by many of you. I am always

looking for new Ambassadors to place with new

members so if you are interested please contact me!

As you have friends and family visit you this

season at Shadow Wood, I hope you will continue

to show them why Shadow Wood Country Club is

the club where members are proud to belong! If you

know of someone who might be interested in learning

more about the membership opportunities at Shadow

Wood, I am always available to provide information

and answer questions.

How Will the Aff ordable Care Act Aff ect the Club Industry?

Starting in 2015, large employers, generally those

with at least 50 full-time employees, will be subject

to the employer shared responsibility requirements

under ACA (Aff ordable Care Act).

Th ere are several concepts within the ACA that

employers need to be aware of as it may have signifi -

cant cost implications for 2015 and beyond.

What does Aff ordable Coverage mean?Under the ACA’s shared responsibility requirement, Clubs must off er

“aff ordable” health coverage to their employees. Fulltime employees

should not be asked to pay more than 9.5% of their household income

for coverage or the Club may be subject to a $2,000 annual penalty per

full-time employee or $3,000 per full-time employee receiving tax cred-

it. To off er more aff ordable plans , the Clubs have two primary choices:

1. Reduce the employee contribution required in the current plan. Th is

option would result in higher costs for the Club.

2. Add a lower-cost plan. Th is could either raise or lower cost depend-

ing on whether the lower-cost plan was off ered as an option or as a

replacement.

Timeline for ComplianceClubs will use information about the employees during the 2014 year

to determine whether they have enough employees to be subject to the

requirements in 2015. Based on current data, Shadow Wood Country

Club will be categorized as a Large Employer and will therefore fall

under full required compliance under the ACA starting in 2015.

Cost of the Impact46% of the employers in the hospitality industry expect their costs to

increase by 3% or more.

What causes the increase?Th e added costs will come from the need to extend coverage to employ-

ees who are currently ineligible for coverage in the health plan. Clubs

that do not comply will face a penalty of $2,000 per employee, minus

the fi rst 30 employees.

Shadow Wood Country Club and serving the membership

as your Food and Beverage Director. Th is season’s new menu

and calendar of events has already been met with great en-

thusiasm and enjoyment. Our entire staff is poised to serve

you and your family and our culinary team is prepared to

excite your taste buds.

We have an exceptional upcoming season of events

planned that we have noted from the member survey. In

addition to Wednesday Night Happy Hour with live en-

tertainment, we are open for lunch every day including our

beautiful 18th Terrace and dinner every evening except for

Mondays. We hope that each of you will actively participate

in these fun-fi lled events designed to enhance the camarade-

rie and enjoyment of the Shadow Wood membership.

Our team is here to assist and give recommendations for

all of your event and party needs as well. Your special day

will be treated with the utmost professionalism. We will as-

sist you with any questions you might have in regards to

the planning of your event. We can also help with suggest-

ing the fi nest vendors: fl orists, invitations, photography and

entertainment.

Chef ’s CornerHappy New Year and I hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday

season! It was a great 2014 season for the Club. I truly appreciate your support and kind emails and letters of congratulations for being named Chef of the Year in 2013 and 2014. I am humbled by this distinguished honor and I am proud to be your Chef at Shadow Wood Country Club.

My culinary staff and I are very excited about the upcoming season and are committed to continued quality and consistency. I

have enhanced the kitchen staff to include Executive Sous Chef Boun, Pastry Chef Stacy and a new member of the kitchen team at the Preserve, Chef Mark.

Please join me for my cooking classes that will be off ered on Monday, February 16, 2015 and Monday, April 20, 2015. Be sure to make your reservations early! If you can’t make the classes, I will be “auctioned off ” for a personal dinner for six prepared in your home. It is my pleasure to assist the Shadow Wood Charitable Foundation in their goal to raise funds for those in need.

New menus and evening dining have been added at the Preserve for your dining pleasure. Th e Preserve will be open every day for lunch and fi ve evenings per week (Tuesday through Saturday) for appetizers, a la Carte dinner and Party at the Preserve. Come join us to experience the additional dining options at the Preserve.

We could not be more proud of our very own Executive Chef

Richard Crisanti who has been voted “2014 Chef of the Year” by

the American Culinary Federation (ACF), Caxambas Chapter of

Southwest Florida for the second year in a row! Th is is the fi rst

time in the chapter’s history that a chef has won back-to-back

years! Th is is the highest honor a Chef in our area can be awarded

and is a result of his dedication to the culinary fi eld and his work

with his local AC F chapter.

Even though Chef Rich has won this prestigious award

(AGAIN!), he is not done growing professionally. His goal over

the next 5 years is to become a Certifi ed Master Chef, a designa-

tion awarded to only 70 Chefs worldwide! While his sights are set high for himself, they are

just as high for the future of Shadow Wood’s culinary operation. His plan is to continue to

elevate the quality of food to make SWCC the #1 dining destination of its members. By

implementing frequent menu changes, providing a range of healthy and gluten free items,

off ering cooking classes, and other new culinary experiences, Chef Rich is determined to

make the Shadow Wood dining experience second to none!
