The AEA Digital Library (ADL), which is a resource included in Iowa AEA Online, has been recently updated to include modified search options, a few design changes and the ‘official’ ability to share playlists!

Any teacher who has set up a teacher account within the ADL can now create and share a playlist of selected streaming resources with teachers and students. A playlist can be shared by simply emailing a URL to a fellow teacher or student who then can click on the link, log into the ADL and view all titles associated with that playlist.

AEA Digital Library – Update

Do you need to keep your media item beyond the standard check-out period? You are able to request a “double booking” right at the time you are checking out the material via our online catalog. After you place the media item into the Order Form, click on the box labeled Return and select Double to extend the period of check-out. If you are checking out a DVD which has a standard booking length of 1 week, selecting the Double booking allows you to reserve the DVD for 2 weeks.

You can always call your area AEA 267 lending library and request an extension over the phone as well. Please be aware that the AEA does not allow for long-term booking of media items.

To setup a playlist:• First be sure you have setup a teacher account in ADL (click here for instructions).• Log into the AEA Digital Library using your teacher account username and password.• Search for a selected title (see sample search result below from a search on ‘rain forests’).• Select your desired streaming title.

• Click on +Add to Playlist below the playback screen

• Click ADD to create a new playlist or use the drop down menu to select an existing playlist.• You will see an alert indicating that you have successfully added the title to your playlist.

To share you playlist:• Click on My Account in the upper left hand area of the ADL search screen under the Iowa AEA Online logo o In this window you will see your Playlists and also streaming titles that you have added to your Favorites Listing.• In the Playlist area, click on the Share option for the playlist that you want to send out to other teachers or students.

• A separate window will pop-up that will include a URL that you can copy and paste into an email. SMS or Moodle for dissemination to colleagues or students.• Those receiving the notice regarding your ‘shared playlist’ can simply click on the URL link, log into the AEA Digital Library and see the full list of streaming titles that you have selected. o Teachers can log in using their teacher account o Students can log in using the building username and password that has been assigned to your site.

New Playaways in the Lending LibrariesThe Playaway units continue to be a very popular item to borrow, so we are constantly adding more to our collection. Each of the new sets listed below contain two of the Playaway units along with five copies of the featured book so users may read along with the narration. In response to customer feedback, we’ve also started shipping each kit with two headphone splitters so that each Playaway may be used by two people at the same time. The Playaway device may also be hooked up to external speakers for large group listening.

Teacher Librarian CornerIowa Award Book Ordering

Once again this year, AEA 267 Media will help defray the cost of IASL Award books by 50%. We are asking that school libraries limit purchases to one set of the individual award levels for the grades served in their building due to budget constraints.

StarWalk Kids is a Collection of simultaneous use fiction and nonfiction eBook titles for grades K-8. Most titles have read aloud capability. An app called Star Walk Kids Reader is available for iPad and Android devices. This collection includes Seymour Simon science, emerging readers, historical fiction, multicultural studies, and more.

Introduce Your Students to Coding with Robots AEA267 Lending Library has several robots that can be checked out and delivered to your school building.

The use of robots in the classroom allow students to use the skills developed through learning to code; problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, along with their sharpened math and science skills in a hand’s-on environment. These robots allow students the opportunity to develop their

pre-coding and coding skills in the physical world.

Bee-Bot (Grades PK-2) This robot, created by the Terrapin company (creators of Logo), is designed

for young children and can receive up to forty commands that are entered through simple directional keys on the top of the bee. There are a wide range of curriculum, accessories, and mats to help integrate Bee-Bot across the curriculum.

Sphero (Grades 2-12)This programmable ball that pairs with a smartphone or tablet, has a play interface for younger students. Allows middle students to program the Sphero ball through the Macrolab app with the Scratch-like interface. Older students can program Sphero through orbBasic for Sphero. Use the Nubby Cover to compare force and distance in physics-related experiments.

ReCon 6.0 Programmable Rover (Grades 3-8)Program missions for your Rover using the microphone, speaker, lights. The Rover

will take directions by 45 or 90 degrees and distances in inches or feet. Great for calculating distances and converting measurements.

Pro-Bot (Grades 3-8)The “older-sibling” to the Bee-Bot. The Pro-Bot is another Logo product that is programmed by the buttons on the top. This bot allows you to enter the distance and degrees for movement. The option to insert a pen makes this a great tool for Geometry and art, among other subjects.
