4-H Super Saturday Come join us for the biggest event of the new year, 4-H Super Saturday! We
want our 4-H families to have first hand knowledge of what is new for the 2016 4-H
year! This event will be held on Saturday, January 23rd from 10am to 1pm at St.
John’s Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor and it will help kick off the 2016 4-H year.
Families and individuals who come out to the 4-H Super Saturday event will be
able to see educational displays developed around different projects, as well as other
opportunities that 4-H members, families, and volunteers can participate in. There will
also be recognition of Tenured 4-H Volunteers and several 4-H Youth.
During the event, there will be two different breakout sessions that you will be
able to attend (further details on page 6). These sessions have numerous different
topics to choose from and you can read all of the descriptions in the back of the
newsletter. Because of the popular demand, we will be offering a Quality Assurance
Training during Super Saturday again this year.
Besides learning all the new information about 4-H in 2016, the first 200 people
will receive a 4-H memento. Lunch will also be provided to all in attendance.

The 2016 Ohio 4-H Conference will take place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Saturday, March 12, 2016.
This event is designed to bring together 4-H volunteers and teens from across the State of Ohio. The objective of this event
is to learn together and from each other in order to improve our abilities to deliver the Ohio 4-H Program to its members.
We truly believe that these educational selections offer something for everyone, and have the ability to satisfy every taste
and need. There will be nearly 150 sessions with varying topics to choose from. If you are interested in attending, please
return the registration form to the Extension Office by Monday, February 1st. Registration fees will be paid for by the
Ottawa County 4-H Committee.
Seniors in high school are busy looking

are interested, please contact
the Extension Office.
2016 Ottawa County Junior
Leadership Tanzania Project Cup
For the past seven years, Ottawa County Junior Leadership
has enjoyed a relationship with people who live in Tanzania
Our initial contact was an effort to learn about the culture, and
aid in the reduction of malaria related deaths through helping
provide bed nets. In the following years we have continued to
learn and share with our friends.
Tanzania is in the process of opening its first
women's and children's hospital. While donations have built
the facilities, there are continuing needs. Comfort items such
as small stuffed toys and necessities such as diapers and
feminine pads are all in short supply.
Junior Leadership is conducting a challenge for area schools.
We invite each school to collect new small stuffed toys to ship
to the children’s hospital. The school with the largest volume
of toys will be awarded the “2016 Ottawa County Junior
Leadership Tanzania Project Cup.” Collection will run from
February 3rd through March 4th. The children who are in the
hospital have few comfort items so a small stuffed toy goes a
long way toward making them feel loved and safe.
There is also a need for diapers and feminine hygiene
products. Washable cotton can be used to make these items.
Our good fortune obtained a large supply of new t-shirts from
the Ottawa County Relay for life, which can be sewn into the
necessary items. We are in need of people who are willing to
cut out and sew the shirts into useable form.
If you are interested in assisting in either of these projects, you
can contact Tom Wilhelm at [email protected] or see him
on Super Saturday.
Even with the winter cold weather, it is not to early to be thinking
about all those camps that our children want to attend! What a
better way to warm up then to the memories from the past
summer 4-H camps that your children attended!
The following dates have been set for the 2016 Cloverbud and
Junior Camps:
Cloverbud Camp Volunteers Our Cloverbud Camp has had huge success over the past few years and continues to grow! Last year we
had approximately 50 campers at Camp Sabroske for 2 fun-filled days!
We are looking for adult volunteers to help with our Cloverbud Camp, including anyone who is a lifeguard.
You can volunteer for either one day or both days. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly
appreciated. The 2016 Cloverbud Camp is scheduled for June 9 & 10 at Camp Sabroske in Oak Harbor.
Our Cloverbud Counselors train February through June. As a Cloverbud Staff member you are
encouraged to attend trainings, but not required.
For more information, or if you are interested in helping with Cloverbud Camp, please contact Melissa at
the Extension Office at 419-898-3631.

Need ideas for self-determined projects:
If you're a 4-H member with a great project idea of your own or someone who's ready to go
beyond a current project book, consider doing a self-determined project. Use the Self-
Determined Project Guide to describe your project, set goals, and record your activities.
Self-Determined projects may be repeated if new areas of interest, learning experiences, and
leadership/citizenship activities are selected. Don't forget, a completed Self-Determined Project
Guide is required for each self-determined project.
Not sure what topic to explore? You can get some great ideas by reviewing the Idea Starters
below.
Idea Starters Each Idea Starter is written as an open invitation to explore a new or innovative topic as a Self-
Determined Project. This growing list of Idea Starters provides a timely and exciting variety of
non-traditional 4-H topics. There is something for everyone! Don’t forget, every Idea Starter
must be used with the Self-Determined Project Guide.

CLOVERBUD CONNECTIONS
Teaching Respect By Joyce Shriner, 4-H Youth Development Educator/CED, Hocking County (OSU Extension)
According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, the word respect means: “to feel or show honor
or esteem for; to show consideration for; avoid intruding upon or interfering with; to concern;
relate to.” Showing respect is related to being polite and having good manners. At a very early
age children can learn to show respect as they learn manners. Learning to say “please” and
“thank you” are examples. Parents are the first to teach children to show respect. 4-H
Cloverbud volunteers can reinforce the early learning by modeling and reminding Cloverbuds of
proper behavior.
All 4-H Cloverbud lessons can include positive messages that teach Cloverbuds how to show
respect. For example, a flag or patriotic lesson could include practice standing at attention and
placing one’s right hand over their heart when the flag passes by during a parade or during the
singing of the National Anthem. Snack time could include reminders about chewing food quietly
with one’s mouth closed and not double dipping.
Other reminders that will help Cloverbuds learn to show respect include:
Be on time.
Wipe one’s shoes before entering a home or building. Remove muddy footwear.
Cover a cough or sneeze.
Wash hands before meals.
Listen while others are speaking.
Hold a door for someone who is carrying lots of packages.
Write a thank you note to show appreciation.
Whisper when it is appropriate (house of worship, restaurants, library, movie theatre) and not
when it is inappropriate (in a small group).
Learn what to say when you accidentally bump someone – “Excuse me;” you accidentally
hurt someone or make a mistake – “I’m sorry;” you could hear what was said “I beg your
pardon.”
Pick up after oneself at home and at school.
Do chores without complaining.
Be nice and getting along well with others by showing respect makes life easier and happier.
