ALPFAPRESIDENT’S LETTER: YVONNE GARCIA

ALPFA: Change Through Collective Impact

Happy New Year to the ALPFA family members, staff and corporate

partners from the island of Puerto Rico to the San Francisco coast!

I am most excited this year about the leadership transformation process that we

have initiated with the board and the support of all of you. We are poised to provide

you, our members and corporate partners, with incredible opportunities that match

your respective needs and further our purpose as an organization. One of ALPFA’s

undeniable strength has always been our commitment to a common agenda; our

collective action towards profoundly impacting i the lives of our talented professionals, dedicated staff and the

corporate partners that provide us with not only guidance, but a demand for talent that we strive to meet.

Together we make a ‘collective impact’ on our society and our corporations.

The concept of “Collective Impact” (CI) was first articulated in the 2011 Stanford Social Innovation Review article

Collective Impact, written by John Kania, Managing Director at FSG, and Mark Kramer, Kennedy School at Harvard

and Co-founder FSG. ALPFA has always reflected the essences of this concept. Collective Impact in short is “the

commitment of a group of actors from different sectors to a common agenda for solving a complex social

problem.” The goal of this being to create a lasting solution on a large-scale to problems that society faces. These

problems have broad adverse effects across different segments of our society, thus necessitating the need to

coordinate efforts and work together around a clearly defined goal. This is exactly the ALPFA way.

When I first started my journey with ALPFA I was a new Latina professional like much of the population across

America that had yet to find ALPFA. I did not really know where to turn for guidance nor did I know the real

value that my Latina culture brought to the table, especially given how the global shift in demographics was

impacting all areas of business. At the time, I did not have much of a network. Sure I knew people, but few in

positions of influence that could help me guide my career and even fewer with real decision making authority who

could sponsor me and connect me with opportunities. In addition, the overwhelming face of success was male.

The lack of women in top positions made it a challenge to be considered on par with other top leaders. This holds

true for Latinos as well. It is a chronic situation that aspiring Latinas face at most large corporations. The diversity

of thought and cultural experiences I brought were, back then, unrealized assets.

I was fortunate to have found ALPFA. It was smaller then, but every bit as committed to developing Latino leaders

and connecting them to opportunities. ALPFA’s members took me in and guided me. They taught me how to get

through glass doors and introduced me to the most incredible people. I learned to advance, not get stuck on the

sticky floor and most importantly, ALPFA allowed me to express my leadership to create solutions not only for

the next generation of talented Latinas and Latinos, but for major corporations. I am proud that I can say to those

corporations, without reservation: ALPFA will connect you with superior leaders.

Today, with your support, I am working on creating more networks so that we have a system of success that finally

bridges the Latino leadership gap and ends the discussion of ceilings or limits of any kind for Latinas. I am confident

that collectively, we can retire old assumptions and transform the barrier mindset to a new and innovative

perspective that will take society, our industries and our companies to new heights.

For ALPFA to achieve this collective impact, we will need to amplify the implementation of our mission. One of

the ways we could do this is by reaffirming our commitment to a common agenda for all ALPFA nation

stakeholders. We are fortunate that our staff, sponsors and members share in the vision of the change that needs

to occur in our institutions and corporations. I believe we have an opportunity to build a deeper common

understanding of the situation from each of our perspectives and develop a collective strategy that acknowledges

our specific challenges. This will allow us to craft solutions that rely on our partnership to implement agreed upon

actions and to cultivate the inspiring opportunity that addressing the Latino Leadership Gap presents. Imagine the

immense impact, if we worked collectively to move the needle forward and filled 10% of Fortune 500 boards with

at least one Latina.

Happy New Year and I hope everyone had the time to spend some quality

time with your family during the holidays. I know we always talk about our

extended ALPFA family and sometimes we forget to thank our personal

family for their support so

that we can spend time with

our extended family. I

personally want to thank the

spouses, special others, and

the children of our ALPFA members for supporting the work

we do at ALPFA during the year and its always great seeing

some of you at the convention.

As we start 2014 I thought we might touch on some important updates on 2014 events. We are already in

the process of planning for our convention in Orlando this year. The Walt Disney Company always has

some major surprises that delight our attendees. We expect record attendance, great motivational

speakers, tremendous opportunities for networking and above all a chance to meet over 100 companies at

our career fair. Mickey can’t wait to make it a magical moment

for everyone. Please make sure you put August 2-5 on your

calendars. This will my 18 consecutive convention that I have

attended and I must say that every year it continues to get

better and provides ALPFA a platform to connect over 3,000

attendees and to create an atmosphere that inspires everyone

to do great things.

During the last few months I have spent more time in not only directing the operations of the ALPFA

Institute but also being part of the advisory team and I am impressed with its growth and quality of the

services it provides. We should all take our hats off to Suri Surinder and his team which continues to

impress our corporate partners with their content and impact. I strongly believe that the ALPFA Institute

will continue to be a major component of the future success of ALPFA. You will hear more about the

ALPFA Institute and the programs it provides, and I am looking for a banner year from them.

Late last year I announced that I would be stepping down as ALPFA’s CEO in 2014. In my role as CEO I

not only had a chance to see the organization grow to a size that many would not have imagined back in

1999 when I became your National President, but also see a level of success that I myself could not have

predicted. I have met so many great individuals that have committed so many hours to the accomplishment

of ALPFA’s mission. I want to thank

every single one of them. Being your

CEO has been a privilege and honor.

ALPFA has allowed me to pursue my

personal ambition of creating Latino

business leaders. I have been blessed

in working with a great team of

people, including our chapter leaders,

our national Board and Corporate Advisory Boards and especially our staff. I am excited about helping with

the transition to identify the new CEO and have all the confidence that your new leadership team will

continue to drive ALPFA to great heights.

ALPFANATIONAL NEWS

Page 8: Winter 2014

Hit the gym more often. Spend less money. Cut back on the empty calories. Find a new job. These are four common New Year's resolutions,

but the last one is likely to be particularly popular this year.

Accounting and finance professionals, especially top performers, are growing more confident in their career prospects and exploring their

options, according to the 2014 Salary Guide from Robert Half. Many employees feel that modest salary gains in recent years haven't kept up

with the increased value of their contributions or their expanded workloads.

How can you stand out in a crowded field of competitors who've also decided to use the dawn of a new year as motivation to pursue greener

pastures? Following are job-hunting tips to boost the odds you land interviews and your career resolution becomes a reality:

Refresh and Customize Your Resume

The traditional resume remains the go-to document for employers; don't give it short shrift. If it's been awhile since you updated your resume,

start by doing a thorough inventory of your talents. You want to make sure to include any recent professional accomplishments or newly

acquired skills or certifications that will add to your appeal.

In addition, quantify your contributions. Instead of leading with a self-focused objective statement, consider writing a strategically crafted

professional summary that emphasizes results over responsibilities. Doing so can quickly convey that you're a polished, bottom-line-oriented

professional worthy of further consideration.

In terms of circulating your resume, don't view it as only a numbers game. Rather than sending the same cookie-cutter resume to every

company with an opening, research prospective employers and then target your pitch directly to them. You're more likely to attract attention

if you play up your selling points most pertinent to each specific position. Help your cause by mirroring the language used in the job ad ¬(as

long as those keywords accurately describe your skills and experience, of course).

While you don't need to start from scratch every time a new job posting catches your eye, a little resume tailoring can make a big difference

in how you are perceived.

Write a Cover Letter

Add punch to your resume by complementing it with an equally targeted cover letter. Many of your fellow job seekers falsely believe the cover

letter has become obsolete, which means submitting one is an easy way to demonstrate initiative and distinguish yourself. In fact, according to

a survey by our firm, 91 percent of the executives we polled said cover letters are valuable when evaluating job candidates.

A cover letter enables you to provide context for your resume by expanding upon notable accomplishments and abilities. Just remember that

more isn't necessarily better. There's no need to share your life story; you simply need to pique the interest of time-strapped employers. So,

keep your letter to four clear and concise paragraphs. Highlight how you can address some of the employer's unique needs, demonstrate your

knowledge of the company and open position, and share an anecdote or two that illustrates your impact.

With both your cover letter and resume, it's essential that you proofread diligently. Even just one or two typos can leave employers wondering

what errors you'd make if hired.

Spread the Word About Your Job Search

You never know who might provide an invaluable job lead or referral, but people can't help you if they're unaware of your career goal. Mention

your job search to friends, extended family members, neighbors, former colleagues, even the barista at your favorite coffee shop. A well-written

resume, compelling cover letter and a completed LinkedIn profile are all very important self-promotional tools, but finding a job often comes

down to your connections. And you can never predict which ones will provide that critical link that leads to a new position.

In addition to leveraging online networking sites, make time for face time. Even in today's highly digital age, old-fashioned in-person networking

is still critical. Be bold and fortify key relationships by asking your most well-connected contacts to lunch. Expand your network by stepping

up your involvement with professional associations. Attend seminars, training workshops and networking events whenever possible.

Partnering with a specialized staffing agency is another smart approach. If you're conducting a discreet job search, a recruiter can confidentially

distribute your resume and cover letter on your behalf. In many cases, staffing professionals are aware of unadvertised job openings you

wouldn't hear about otherwise. They can help you to target your search efforts to the most promising opportunities and fine-tune your

job-hunting tactics too.

Tips: Changing Jobs? Take Your 401(k) and Roll With It!

ALPFA PNC Wealth Management

Why a new employer's 401(k): A rollover to your new

employer's 401(k) plan may provide greater creditor

protection. Most 401(k) plans receive unlimited protection

from your creditors under federal law. Your creditors

(with certain exceptions) cannot attach your plan

funds to satisfy any debts, regardless of whether

you've declared bankruptcy. If your

distribution includes Roth 401(k)

contributions and earnings, you can

roll those amounts over to

either a Roth IRA or your

new employer's Roth

401(k) plan (if

it accepts

rollovers).

A Bureau of Labor Statistics report stated that the median number of years that wage and salary employees worked in their current job is 4.6 years.

For Hispanics, that number is only 4.2 which mean an individual will likely have multiple contribution accounts.

Consolidating by rolling over either to an IRA or a new employer’s 401(k) plan is recommended. It reduces the amount of fees required with

multiple accounts and tracking is a lot easier.

Leaving the job? If you leave your job (voluntarily or involuntarily), you'll be entitled to distribution of your vested balance. Your vested balance

includes your own contributions (pretax, after-tax and Roth), any company match and investment earnings. It's important to understand your

particular plan's vesting schedule because you could forfeit any employer contributions that haven't vested by the time you leave your job. If you're

on the cusp of vesting, it may recommendable to wait a bit before leaving if you have that luxury.

Don't spend it! If you take and spend a distribution you'll be taxed at ordinary rates on the entire amount of your account except for any after-

tax or Roth 401(k) contributions you've made. In most cases an additional 10 percent penalty may apply to the taxable portion of your payout if

you are under age 59 1/2.

401(k) or IRA?

Roll over to an IRA: There are more investment choices with an IRA plan. With a Roth IRA, taxes are paid on the amount that is rolled over minus

any after-tax contributions made, but any qualified distributions from the Roth IRA in the future may be tax free.

Roll over to a new employer's 401(k) plan: A rollover to a new employer's 401(k) plan may provide greater creditor protection. If a distribution

includes Roth 401(k) contributions and earnings, these amounts may be rolled over to a new employer's Roth 401(k) plan, if they are offered.

Which to choose?

Why an IRA: Typically there are more investment choices with

an IRA plan as dollars can be freely allocated among different

options and you may have more flexibility with distributions.

Your distribution options depend on the terms of that plan.

With an IRA, the timing and amount of distributions is

generally at your discretion.

You may also roll over to a Roth IRA. You'll

have to pay taxes on the amount you

roll over (minus any after-tax

contributions you've made),

but any qualified

distributions from the

Roth IRA in the

future will be

tax free.

ALPFA PROFESSIONAL IMPACT

For the past eleven years, ALPFA Boston has celebrated Latino

leadership through its Annual Executive Leadership Summit. This

year’s summit took place on November 20 and united more than

500 professionals to address how much of a driving force Latinos

are in the changing face of Massachusetts.

The summit began with a networking reception at the prestigious

Boston Marriott Copley Place. Radhames Nova, Executive Director

of the Boston Chapter, provided opening remarks about the

Chapter’s many accomplishments in 2012-2013 and thanked

sponsors and volunteers for their support. Pamela Ravare-Browne,

COO of ALPFA National, followed Radhames with a welcome

message from ALPFA National.

The night took on a celebratory tone, as the chapter awarded

Alberto Vasallo, President and CEO of El Mundo Newspaper, with

the Excellence in Service to the Community Award; Bob Rivers,

President and Chief Operating Officer of Eastern Bank, with the

Diversity Leadership and Service Award; and Rene Jarquin, Vice

President and Senior Portfolio Manager at BNY Mellon, with the

Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Education Supporter Award, sponsored by Steward Health

Care, was presented to Bryan Muñoz of Northeastern University

and ALPFA member Filipe Zamborlini received a Harvard

Extension School Scholarship from Bill Cain of Harvard University.

Following dinner, ALPFA National President Yvonne Garcia

provided remarks about how far the Boston Chapter has come and

the important role ALPFA plays in building Latino business leaders

in Massachusetts and across the United States. She then moderated

a panel discussion between U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, Former

U.S. Senate Candidate Gabriel Gomez and Eastern Bank

President/COO Bob Rivers. The panelists shared their struggles,

both professional and personal, as they navigated throughout their

careers, and discussed how much Latinos have changed the state in

positive ways.

Yvonne Garcia then proudly introduced Migdalia Diaz as the new

President of ALPFA Boston. Migdalia, excited about this amazing

leadership opportunity, gave heartfelt thanks towards the many

responsible for introducing her to ALPFA and gratitude to an

ALPFA Chicago’s Eighth Annual Leadership Summit – Classical Leadership

ALPFA Chicago’s Eighth Annual Leadership Summit took place on

Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the Chicago Symphony

Orchestra. The event was attended by close to 200 ALPFA members,

friends and corporate partners, representing 59 organizations and 5

universities.

The Summit featured Jose Luis Prado, President of Quaker North

America as the keynote speaker, and was followed by a panel

discussion on classical leadership, moderated by Joseph Kosinski,

Director, Corporate Manufacturing Accounting, Abbott and member

of ALPFA’s National Corporate Advisory Board. The panel included

Gustavus Bahr, Managing Director, and Head of Insurance and Leasing

Finance Coverage Teams of PNC Bank, Stephen Cornejo, Director of

Inclusive Diversity Allstate Insurance Company, Teresa Olson, Vice

President and Controller of McDonald’s USA, and Dr. Tanesha

Pittman, CEO of Universal Kingdom Enterprises.

From the event I wanted to share three characteristics of classical

leadership we could all apply to our current roles. Remember, you

do not need to wait until you are a supervisor or manager to lead.

You can lead from where you are right now!

1. When you accomplish what nobody else wants to do, you will be

noticed. See an unattractive project/task for what it truly is – an

opportunity to showcase your talent. You do not have to be the

subject matter expert, but work with others to get the project/task

at hand done. This may be seen as a risk to some, but soon enough

you will be trusted with more.

2. Demonstrate clarity in communication and strategy. A mistake

some leaders make is to “run ahead of their army.” People have very

different communication styles and the same term can mean different

things to different people based on their background and experiences.

Make sure you are confirm understanding with your team, because

when your vision is not clear to them, costly mistakes are made.

3. Personal courage is an attribute that all speakers agreed is

important. All your ideas will not be embraced from the start. If you

are a true visionary and see the world differently from others, you

cannot give up if at first you do not get everyone’s buy-in. You have

to demonstrate patience – not passive patience, but active patience,

where you are exhibiting characteristics 1 and 2. When the opportune

time comes, you’ll be ready to take action.

I am glad I had the opportunity to listen to the voice of experience. I

am incorporating the behaviors associated with these characteristics

to my leadership style. I would encourage you to do so as well.

On Thursday, October, 19th 2013, at the Federal Reserve Bank of

Philadelphia, ALPFA Philadelphia hosted its yearly Leadership Summit

with special guests, Richard Negrin, Deputy Mayor for Administration

and Coordination and Managing Director of the city; Jerry Maginnis,

Office Managing Partner of KPMG; Yvonne Garcia, President of ALPFA

national, and our key note speaker; Alejandro Jaramillo, President of

Data Means who was joined by a group of executive panelists from

various sectors.

This year’s Leadership Summit focused on Big Data and Data Analytics.

Executives from many different industries attended this event to learn

how to address this ever-increasing volume of data called “Big Data”.

The demand and need to manage large volumes of data within an

organization is no longer an option, but a necessity, said an attendee.

Richard Negrin in his opening remarks reminded the audience that

technology is not readily available to all. The digital divide gap is wide

among those who are economically disadvantaged. As result the city

of Philadelphia is working to change this by using cell phones as a tool

to deliver technology to those without access to computers.

Patricia Boshuizen, President of ALPFA Philadelphia, welcomed all of

the attendees, and spoke about the importance of the Leadership

Summit in bringing business executives together to discuss key trends

in business. She also shared a video by Intel on Big Data to set a

common understanding of what is “Big Data”.

Alejandro Jaramillo, the keynote speaker, set the basis by defining the

concept of Big Data and Data Analytics, maturity model, trends,

technologies, challenges and opportunities. He discussed the

challenges an organization faces in developing a culture that embraces

data analytics and provided a suggested strategy for overcoming these

obstacles.

During intermission, the ALPFA Board announced the winner of the

2013 ALPFA CARES Scholarship. Skyler Longsdon, student of Drexel

Le Bow Business School was awarded with a $10,000 scholarship and

a year of mentorship with the sponsors, Boeing and KPMG. Yvonne

Garcia, President of ALPFA National, joined the award ceremony and

provided some insight into ALPFA and the scholarship program.

The conference continued with a panel discussion with panelist

representing multiple industries including: Jeanne Johnson, Partner of

Advisory Services and Global Business Intelligence at KPMG; Bill

Schury, Director of IT audit at Campbell Soup Company; Srinivas

Rapthadu, Product Manager SAP HANA at SAP Americas; Patricia

Schmidt, Senior Manager Finance for Boeing; and Vijay Dondeti, MBA

Student Intern at Comcast.

The panelist responded to questions on a variety of data analytics

topics. These engaging conversations around data analytics continued

at the luncheon where guests had an opportunity to meet the speakers

and network.

ALPFA Pittsburgh, 2013 developing chapter of the year, has grown

significantly over the past five years through the leadership of a

committed board. The chapter has attracted talent, strengthened

education around leadership and has contributed greatly to the

broader Pittsburgh community. A key component of their success has

been ongoing partnerships with strategic sponsors and like-minded

organizations focused on building diverse talent in the region.

navigating their careers while soliciting feedback on improvements that

could be shared with local companies on how to better reach young,

diverse professionals.

The keynote address by Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III of the

HOUSTON – ALPFA Houston

partnered with Massachusetts

Mutual Life Insurance

Company (Mass Mutual) to

host the Setting the

Foundation for Financial

Literacy event that included a

private reception and panel

discussion addressing the

company’s findings on

Hispanic-owned businesses.

According to the U.S. Census

Bureau’s Survey of Business

Owners, the number of

Hispanic-owned businesses in

Houston increased approximately 40 percent between 2002 and

2007. MassMutual conducted a research entitled “Business Owner

Perspectives: 2011 Insights in an Uncertain Economy.” The

MassMutual study found that many Hispanic business owners in the

Houston area are lacking knowledge of and access to tools and

resources that would help them create a more solid future. The

panel discussion at ALPFA Houston’s event focused on these finding.

Pablo Valle, Program Manager for Metropolitan Transit Authority of

Harris County, mentioned that the main reason Hispanics lack this

knowledge is because they do not reach out for financial guidance.

Valle attributed this to Hispanics’ “cultural aspect” of not trusting

others. Dr. Laura Murillo, President and CEO of Houston Hispanic

Chamber of Commerce, added that the best way to combat the lack

of information and understanding is by “truly understanding the

culture and building trust.”

Mass Mutual looks to address this by focusing on recruiting top

professional Hispanic talent that can relate to Hispanic business

owners and build enough trust to teach them financial literacy. At the

beginning of the ALPFA Houston event, Mass Mutual hosted a private

reception aimed at recruiting this top talent.

“Many ALPFA members are business owners so I know this event

was truly beneficial to them, now they are aware of the resources

that are available to them that can help build and maintain a

successful business,” said Maria Carrillo, ALPFA Houston’s Marketing

Director. “It is also great to see that ALPFA has high-achieving

professionals who can lead the change in educating Hispanic business

owners and build a greater Houston community”.

implement different takes on its effective programming, the chapter

board of directors chose to use a domino tournament as an

entertaining way of engaging the event’s guests while generating

donations for Radio Lollipop at the same time. Twenty people

participated in the tournament, and medals were awarded to the

winners of first, second, and third place. Complementing the

WOMEN OF ALPFA

In December 2013, Women of ALPFA (“WOA”) announced the launch of the 2014 Women of ALPFA program, Using the Power of YOU to

Transform Latina Leadership. Focused on the development of a number of competencies that are essential at all levels of leadership, the 2014

program is the most natural and logical next step, after a successful 2013 year of building a strong foundation of Advancing Latina Leaders

Through the Power of Influence.

The 2014 WOA program is the result of a successful partnership between WOA and the ALPFA Institute, which has created an advanced

cutting-edge curriculum designed to develop and train Latina professionals on how to influence others. Based on proprietary research of the

ALPFA Institute, the 2014 program is focused on advancing leadership by Earning Respect, Acquiring Credibility, and Building Trust, all of which

will be primarily learning outcomes through the following three tracks:

In Partnership with

Using the Power of YOU to Transform Latina Leadership

Prepared by Gloria Rosal, WOA Strategy Development Committee,

Portfolio Manager, Vice President, RBS Citizens Bank

Earning Respect by Enhancing Resources will focus on the development of 10 capabilities that research indicates are

correlated to earning respect from their team members, peers, and superiors. This track focuses on is important

for entry-level talent professionals within organizations who need to demonstrate superior, relevant resources.

Acquiring Credibility by Delivering Results will focus on the development of 10 capabilities that research indicates

are correlated to building credibility with their team members, peers, and superiors. This track focuses on mid-level

professionals within organizations who need to demonstrate and deliver distinctive, consistent results.

Building Trust by Expanding Relationships will focus on the development of 10 capabilities that research indicates

are correlated to acquiring trust from their team members, peers, and superiors. This track focuses on senior

executives within organizations who need to demonstrate dependable, caring relationships.

The number of Latina women with Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and Doctoral degrees have not only increased, but also surpassed

those of their male counterparts in recent years. Yet, Latinas still represent a significantly under recognized and untapped talent pool by

American corporations and government. “We are confident that our 2014 focus and three year umbrella theme will provide our Latina

members the opportunity to learn about influence, impact and intention, which are key competencies that enable strategic thinking,

followership and results”, says Ileana Musa, Chair of the WOA Corporate Advisory Board.

ALPFA Miami Advances Latina Leaders through Women of ALPFA

MIAMI, FLORIDA – On Thursday, October 3, ALPFA Miami

hosted its annual Women of ALPFA marquee event, with the

theme of “Advancing Latina Leaders through the Power of

Influence”. More than 75 people attended the event at the Coral

Gables Country Club in Coral Gables, Florida, and were inspired

by two amazing and successful female business leaders in their

respective industries.

Ileana Musa (Head of International Credit & Banking, Bank of

America; Chairperson of ALPFA’s National Women of ALPFA

Corporate Advisory Board) provided insight as to ALPFA’s goals

with its Women of ALPFA program. By providing a unique focus

on Latinas, the goal of the program is to build Latina leaders, who

represent a viable, dynamic, and influential constituency not only

within ALPFA but also in the community at large. “In order to be

influential, you need to be honest, trustworthy, and open to

becoming a change agent,” said Musa in her introduction for the

event.

Claire Babineaux-Fontenot (Senior Vice President and Chief Tax

Officer, Wal-Mart Stores), who was the keynote speaker for the

event, continued from and advanced Ileana’s theme. Claire inspired

the audience to “find themselves” as the starting point for

influencing others. Knowing who you are, accepting who you are,

and “leaning” into who you are (through enhancement and

promotion) – she offered these as the three key steps for finding

oneself. By being honest about ourselves and what we want and

need, Claire put forth the idea that the person who can do that

can achieve incredible success.

Afterwards, Claire provided immediate feedback regarding the

event, commenting that “the informal discussions after my

presentation only underscored why such investments are

worthwhile. In finance speak, I have received a great ROI.” Such

words from the keynote speaker serve as a reminder and a call to

action to continue the development, maturation, and promotion of

the WOA program as a means of influencing our membership and

partners.

ALPFA Miami thanks Deloitte and New York Life for sponsoring

the Women of ALPFA marquee event. The success of the event

was made possible by their contributions and support of our

chapter, its mission, and its membership.

Ana Ruano, an emerging professional who recently joined ALPFA and attended a WOA Breakfast in Miami tells us about her

own experience:

As a new ALPFA member, what is the most significant

message you learned during this event?

“Listening to Latinas leaders from large and well-established

companies is very powerful. The message to be authentic, to be who

you are, and to be yourself, gave me the confidence to use the power

that I have within myself. Also, through an insightful discussion, I

realized that I am not alone and that I don’t have it all wrong…

Because sometimes you try to figure out if you are on the right path.”

What did you learn about Leadership through the Power

of Influence?

“A lesson that I learned during this breakfast is that it doesn’t

really matter what job title you have, or what role in the

organization you have, you can always exercise the power of

influencing others, if you are authentic, able to build trust, and

bring people together and work through issues. That is what really

matters. It is also important to recognize that Latinas are very

important to the continued development of our country in most

part because, as women, we are more naturally inclined to seek

win-win situations.”

How do you plan to implement the lessons learned in your

daily job and responsibilities?

“As an executive recruiter myself, the themes discussed during the

panel resonated with me, as I work with candidates that are in

CEO and executive level positions. I have to build trust with them

and be able to structure a story that will convince them to hear

me and to have them think about their next career opportunity.”

Overall, how do you describe your WOA Breakfast

experience?

“This experience was powerful and impactful for me! I am

extremely happy to have joined an organization that focuses on

building Latina leaders. This type of professional events really helps

me and inspires me to become a better professional and a more

effective leader. I learned a great deal from amazing speakers and

I can absolutely relate to each of them. I look forward to attending

many more WOA future events.”

Members like Ana have enjoyed events, panel discussions, ‘power’ breakfasts, networking events and professional workshops across the

country. All of these events with one important goal: to connect Latinas and help them advance through the Power of Influence. Now, we

prepare for another year of great expectations and enthusiasm as we continue to build the platform towards a legacy of Latina leadership.

ALPFA Tampa Bay – What is Authentic Leadership?

The ALPFA Tampa Bay

Chapter hosted its Women

of ALPFA Summit on

November 14, 2013 at the

Centre Club in Tampa,

Florida. A keynote speaker

and panel defined “Authentic

Leadership” and shared the

personal experiences that

shaped their definitions. The

panel was composed of

keynote speaker and panelist,

Sandra Callahan, Senior Vice

President – Finance &

Accounting and CFO for

TECO Energy; panelist, Missy Escribano-Newlin, Director of

Education and Partner Relations for Raymond James; and panelist

Maureen Greene James, Human Capital Leader for PwC.

Our speakers all agreed that in order to lead with authenticity, a

leader must lead with her head, heart, and guts. Leading with the

“head” means getting things done, or rethinking new possibilities.

Leading with the “heart” means balancing business needs and people

needs. Leading with “guts” is about taking risks, and balancing risks

and rewards. Sandra Callahan stressed that “leadership is important

for all organizations, but it is absolutely essential to have authentic

leadership for great organizations to succeed”. All the panelists

agreed that self-awareness and a sense of direction to better one-

self constantly are keys to authentic leadership. Empathy was also

emphasized in the discussion – leaders who not only get things done

but also who genuinely connect and care for the people that work

with them. “To be authentic to me is also to be transparent,” shared

Maureen Greene James. It is important to show to others your true

self and not fear looking weak. To be authentic also means to take

challenges and risks, Missy Escribano-Newlin shared her experience

of changing career paths and taking a chance.

The three panelists and their experiences filled the night with great

advice and an inspirational message to the audience on being

authentic and growing as a leader, one that leads with head, heart,

and guts – a leader who is essential in order to move great

organizations in the direction of success.

ALPFA New York held their 9th annual Women of ALPFA Summit

hosted by Goldman Sachs on September 13, 2013. The keynote

address was made by Caroline Carr, EMEA head of Global

Leadership and Diversity of Goldman Sachs. She reflected on this

year’s theme, Advancing Latina Leaders through the Power of

Influence, by stating that “If your knowledge happens to coincide

with your passion that is where you can have influence”. This year

NY recognized its first ever New York Chapter Woman of ALPFA

Honoree, Dana Galin, who truly exemplifies that statement. Dana

Galin, the CEO of Defineum and member of the Corporate

Advisory Board for ALPFA NY, has utilized her vast knowledge

and experience of leading transformative leadership development

programs for corporations, individuals and universities to aid the

NY chapter.

The keynote was followed by a panel of extraordinary female

executives from BNY Mellon, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Thomson

Reuters and TIAA-CREF. This exceptional event also had various

workshops which focused on Latinas evolving role in the

corporate world. Elizabeth Agosto, the Vice President at Barclays

ran a workshop called “Personal Branding: The Importance of

Building and Maintaining Your Brand” which dealt with the

importance of discovering and building your professional

reputation. Minue Yoshida-Aydelott, Corporate Vice President

from New York Life Insurance Company hosted an interactive

workshop called “The Latina Power: Unleash Your Inner Wonder

Woman in 7 Easy Steps”. This workshop talked about the creation

of the ‘women’s market’ in the best companies and how women

need to ‘Woman-Up!’- realize and use the power of what you do,

what you expect, and even what you wear to dictate what you get

in the end. Sandra Altine, Senior Vice President of Moody’s,

presented the “Power of Mentorship: Managing Your Relationships

to Maximize Your Success” workshop which was designed to

provide tips for managing professional relationships and sustaining

networks that would contribute to long-term professional success.

The New York Chapter would like to thank Goldman Sachs for

their continued support of the Women of ALPFA program not

only as our national corporate partner but locally as the host for

Women of ALPFA Indianapolis is proud to announce the success of

their fourth annual Women of ALPFA event held on October 23,

2013, at the McDonalds Regional Headquarter in Indianapolis.

McDonalds has partnered with ALPFA Indy and sponsored this event

since it was first held in 2010. In line with the National Women of

ALPFA objective of strengthening Latina’s leadership skills, this year’s

event promoted entrepreneurial leadership skills through

experiences shared by keynote speaker Margarita (Marge) Szydlo,

who began as a part-time cashier at McDonalds and went on to

become the owner/operator of five successful McDonalds

restaurants. Her motivational story captured and inspired our

members and guests.

After Marge’s speech, attendees were divided into breakout groups.

Each group was led by a business professional and included industry

leaders Maria Quintana, Executive Vice President of Government,

Not for Profit and Health Care for JP Morgan Chase, Tania Deng,

Senior Vice President, Commercial Relationship Manager for

Huntington Bank, and Liliana Gehring, Director of Project

Management and Operations for Eli Lilly. The session leaders

discussed authentic leadership, building trust and change

management in a one-on-one environment with attendees. Each

group presented their observations and conclusions at the end of the

breakout sessions. The event was very successful, with over 60

members in attendance. The format of this event provided an

opportunity for attendees to connect with business leaders in a

setting that invited them to engage in a small group conversation.

Attendees enjoyed the evening and we look forward to partnering

with McDonalds for future Women of ALPFA events!

Ford Motor Company has a long history of recognizing the accomplishments of women in our society. Ford held and exclusive

dinner reception honoring five Hispanic women for their contributions to the Latino community in the tri-state area. The five

legendary women selected represent some of the 22 million exceptional Latinas in the U.S. that are making a difference in the

workplace, their homes, the environment and the community. These extraordinary women were honored through Ford’s

‘Mujeres Legendarias de Ford” campaign.

Jessenia Francisco from ALPFA NY was honored as the ‘Latina Trailblazer’. Jessenia is an example of a Latina that breaks

barriers and works to improve the quality of life of Latinas in the U.S. When asked what it means to her to be a Trailblazer,

Jessenia said “First it’s a privilege to be named a Trailblazer for Latinas in the U.S., being able to lead and empower at the

forefront for an entire community and more so my community. I want to create an environment where all Latinos can evolve

past cultural stigmas and professional obstacles to achieve their career fulfillment. I feel that a trailblazer is simply a person

who believes in the power of numbers and has the ability to mobilize a group to work towards a goal. Certainly, I am honored

to collaborate with and lead great individuals from a wide range of ages and walks of life in my current role. A large part of being an impactful leader

is the ability to establish trust within my relationships and provide a transparent intent in how we

collaborate towards a goal. It’s through my interactions and intent that I find inspiration and passion to

grow our chapter and spread our influence.

According to Jessenia, Latinas are uniquely qualified to be leaders. “Latinas are leading across all industries.

I find that we bring a unique perspective of biculturalism and determination to what we set our minds to.

We as women have a natural ability to lead by cultivating relationships and serving families, clients, peers,

and the community because of our cultural upbringing. The secret to success is being cognizant of our

unique attributes and being able to identify cultural tendencies to our advantage.

I consider myself to be a southern girl with

big dreams and a lot of faith that they

would come true,” said Pamela Ravare

Browne regarding the career journey she

embarked on before joining ALPFA as the

Chief Operating Officer in 2010. She

continued, “I have been very blessed as an

executive leader with over twenty years of

professional experience to utilize my skills

and talents in the non-profit sector.”

Ravare Browne was born in California, but spent her early childhood

in Germany. “This was my first introduction to the

international world and where I gained the perspective that

the world is truly larger and more diverse than what we

typically see,” she recalled. After growing up overseas, Ravare

Browne returned to the United States and completed her

undergraduate degree in Marketing at SU and graduate school

education at Louisiana State University, earning an MBA with a

concentration in Marketing and International Business.

A Unique Career Path

“I recognized my desire to pursue higher education and later became very passionate about it after being one of the few members of my family

to complete an MBA degree,” said Ravare Browne. She continued, “I worked in the corporate arena at General Motors, IBM, and Proctor and

Gamble in the marketing division at each firm.” While Ravare Browne felt very privileged to be working at these Fortune 100 companies, she

felt like she needed to tap into her true passion. She explained, “There was something from a personal standpoint that was still missing for

me and I wanted to bring them all together - I love diversity, I love education and I love advancement.”

After spending some time in China, Ravare Browne came back to the United States and accepted

a visiting professor position at the University of Miami-Ohio and began to consider the option of

returning to school herself to pursue a Ph.D. “I realized that I enjoyed sharing knowledge and giving

back to the younger generation who need guidance and mentoring,” she said. Ravare Browne

continued to pursue her teaching career, accepting positions at other universities across the

country, including the University of Dallas. Here, she became the Director of the Pre-MBA program

interacting with international students from over ninety countries.

In a short time, Ravare Browne was promoted to become the Executive Director of International Relations at the University of Dallas. This

appointment set the stage for Ravare Browne to spend a lot of time working abroad in different countries facilitating the process of recruiting

international students to the United States for graduate education. She worked with several US embassies and was the guest of Presidents and

Vice-Presidents of countries delivering on poverty reduction strategies via education. “This was such a rewarding experience; I was so humbled

to travel and touch so many lives while working in the non-profit and academic arena,” said Ravare Browne.

Once again, she started thinking about the possibility of furthering her own education by

earning a doctorate, but these plans were placed on the backburner when she was

approached by The National Society of Hispanic MBAs, ALPFA’s sister organization,

where she accepted a position in the office of the CEO. Ravare Browne was eventually

approached by ALPFA, and nearly four years ago, she moved out to their headquarters in

Los Angeles to serve as the Senior VP of Strategic Initiatives and was quickly promoted

to her current position as Chief Operating Officer. She said, “My journey has been an

amazing blend of corporate America, academia, and non-profit.” She attributes her

success to the cross-functional skills acquired in business school, but ultimately Ravare Browne knew she would be the most effective in the

industry for which she is the most passionate. “I found my niche in the non-profit sector because I had the desire to give back,” she explained.

“This was such a rewarding

experience; I was so humbled to

Career Advancement Tools for Latino Business Leaders

According to Ravare Browne, it is not uncommon for any non-dominant group to face challenges in their professional careers. The mission of

ALPFA is to equip Latino business leaders with the tools they need to advocate for themselves and move forward in their careers.

“Communication and relationship building are two obstacles that our student members often encounter” said Ravare Browne. “Learning how

to network as a professional in a room can be intimidating for anyone. It is a common anxiety, but a very real one that can hold someone back

in their career if they don’t master these skills.”

One of ALPFA’s goals is to have a positive impact on the percentage of Latino leaders at the highest corporate levels. Ravare Browne said,

“ALPFA helps to strengthen these networks and help members facilitate valuable business relationships and connections.”

She places a lot of emphasis on the importance of sponsors to the career advancement of high potential talent, and this is a message she works

hard to deliver to the members of ALPFA. “Many of our members don’t have that inside edge, so we provide mentoring and coaching in addition

to connecting them with individuals who will be sponsors for them within their own companies,” explained Ravare Browne. She continued, by

creating this mentoring and sponsorship concept within the organization, it helps them to see the importance of having both in order to advance

in their career.”

Looking ahead, Ravare Browne is confident that ALPFA will continue to grow and evolve as a leading Latino membership based organization. By

continuing to focus on offering strong leadership programs, ALPFA will be increasingly instrumental serving as a catalyst to bring strong Latino

business leaders through the leadership pipeline over the next 40 years and beyond. Obtaining an advance degree is one of the many ways our

members will suceed in pushing the ALPFA mission forward.
