WINTER 201210

EVAN LEWIS MSC. CSCS, CK

This is the second article in a seriesexamining nutritional aides that can affectathletic performance. My previous articlediscussed research of caffeine’s effectswhen consumed before and during exercise. This article examines carbohydrate loadingand its use to fuel muscles for competition.

To begin it is important to under-stand what creatine is and how it fits intoperformance. Creatine is an inorganic phos-phorus compound naturally found withinmuscle and also within meat. For muscle, creatine is an important energy source thatis used to power working muscles.

Muscle contractions are powered byadenosine triphosphate (ATP), an inorganiccompound of three phosphates. To produceenergy ATP is split into adenosine diphos-phate (ADP) and a single phosphate (P).Continued muscle contractions that arerequired during exercise, use up stored ATPcreating a high concentration of ADP and Pas metabolic by-products. When thisoccurs, muscles require a rapid source ofenergy to continue contracting, which iswhere creatine fits in. Creatine is rapidlybroken down to provide a single P thatbinds with ADP to replenish muscle ATPallowing muscle contractions to continue.

At this point you might ask: at whatpoint are ATP and Creatine used for energyand how does this all fit together for exer-cise? This is a good question since carbo-hydrates and fats typically get most of theattention for being used to provide workingmuscles energy. While carbohydrates andfats are converted into ATP, they come intoplay later.

At the beginning of exercise (i.e. 0-10seconds) stored ATP is the primary sourceof energy for your muscle. As stored ATPruns out muscle creatine is used for thenext 10-20 seconds to replenish ATP. Thistiming allows for muscles to start usingstored carbohydrates in the form of glyco-gen for energy. Since the body is still in the‘startup phase’ of exercise, glycogen is bro-ken down without oxygen, which formslactic acid. By approximately 3 minutesinto exercise that is not maximal intensity, working muscles have enough energy oxy-gen to begin breaking down carbohydratesand fats, which provide a sustained sourceof energy.

Figure 1 – A representation of the dif-ferent energy systems muscle uses duringthe transition from rest to moderate intensi-ty exercise.

Based on this infor-mation, why is creatinesupplementation sopopular? In the mid1990s it was discoveredthat creatine or creatinemonohydrate (the com-mercial form), could beused to increase theconcentration of freecreatine stores withinmuscle. As a result, thiswould allow skeletal muscle to regenerateATP more quickly for a longer period oftime during the first 30 seconds of exercise. So for sports requiring rapid bursts of ener-gy or sprint related sports (i.e. track andfield and football), this could be a consider-able advantage.

There is a large body of research exam-ining the effect of creatine supplementationon athletic performance and body composi-tion. Currently, the most accepted methodof increasing muscle creatine stores is

through supplementation with creatinemonohydrate in a 5 day loading protocol of20g/day, consumed with an equal or greateramount of carbohydrates and plenty ofwater to help the creatine enter musclecells. After the loading phase, a mainte-nance phase occurs where 2-5g/day is con-sumed to maintain muscle creatine stores.

After a 5-day loading period, Izquierdoet al. (1)examined changes the effects on agroup of European Handball players.Athletes in the supplementation groupincreased body mass by approximately 0.6kg (1.3lbs), increased single rep maxstrength and sprint performance over non-supplementing controls. In a longer-termstudy, Becque et al. (2) reveal that sixweeks of supplementation lead to anincrease in body weight by 2kg (4.4lbs),from increased muscle mass and waterretention.

In a study by Tarnopolsky et al., (3)researchers compared the effects of creatineand post-exercise protein with carbohydratesupplementation on strength and body com-position measurements before and aftereight weeks of training in university agedmales. Findings revealed that both groupsexperienced similar gains in muscle mass, muscle fibre size and increases in maxstrength. The only difference between

groups was the change in body weight, asthe creatine group gained an average of4.3kg (9.5lbs) compared to 1.9kg (4.2lbs)in the protein group.

It is clear that creatine supplementationcan have an effect for individuals involvedin weight lifting and sprint based sports. Anincrease in muscle creatine stores can leadto increased energy, which can increasetraining effects and result in more rapidgains in strength and body weight.

However, a key factor in creatine’s abilityto increase body weight is through waterretention, which is necessary for it to bedigested and absorbed by muscle. Based onthe findings of Tarnopolsky et al. it is clearthat creatine supplementation is not neces-sary to increase muscle strength, and properrecovery nutrition is sufficient to provideyour muscles with nutrient requirements tobecome a better athlete.

Laser 1575EUAN SWAN

In 1972 I left the OK Dinghy class and joined the fast growing Laser class in Montreal at theRoyal St. Lawrence Yacht Club. Laser 1575 was purchased as a “factory second” directly from theoriginal Performance Sailcraft factory in Montreal. She was considered a “second” due to her whitedeck at a time when Lasers of that era all had beige decks. Named Dennarah, she has been with mefor the past 40 years and is still going strong with her original board, rudder, spars and Elvstrom sail(although somewhat blown out)!

Dennarah originally was sailed and raced on Lac St Louis in Montreal and later in the BedfordBasin, Halifax and Summerside harbours of Atlantic Canada. In 1980 she even enjoyed the waters ofthe Caribbean thanks to trip south courtesy of the Canadian Navy. A radial rig was purchased for herin the 1980s to accommodate the next generation of Laser sailors in my growing family. Since 1991,Dennarah has been based in Ottawa and has accompanied the family on summer vacations in theOttawa area. In 2004 after 16 years of recreational sailing she crossed a start line once again at theOntario Masters Laser Regatta at Lac Deschenes Sailing Club in Ottawa. Dennarah is now kept atthe foot of the our garden on the banks of the Ottawa River. Long live the Laser!

RememberingBrian Burant

MARK KASTELLA CROSSE,WISCONSIN

I am very sad to informsailors in District 20, andmaster sailors around thecountry have known him, that our good friend, andlongtime competitor, BrianBurant of Madison, passedaway September 10 whilecompeting in the districtchampionships in GreenBay. After the 25 boats gotoff the line, for the firstrace, in moderate wind, oneboat was laying on its sidein the starting area. Whenthe race committee investi-gated they found Brianunconscious, wearing hislife preserver, and lying inthe sail. Brian, who was59, lean and in excellenthealth, appears to have diedinstantly of a massive heartattack.

I’ve known Brian and hisfamily for decades. Whenwe had regular regattas inMadison they consistentlyopened their home to meand Brian was a regular atthe Border Challenge in LaCrosse. He was a coolcompetitor frequently at thefront of the pack and thenicest person you wouldever encounter on or off thewater.

We raced the BorderChallenge, the followingweekend, in his memoryand there was a short recog-nition of Brian’s life at the

skippers meeting. Hishome club, where he hadbeen Commodore, theMonona Sailing Club, helda special recognition in hishonor at their annual meet-ing and banquet on October22.

District ReportsDistrict 1Nova ScotiaDanielle Dube

In late September/early October the CYA Laser andRadial National Championships were held in St.Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia. Many sailors fromDistrict 1 were in attendance for the four day event, which tested sailors with a variety of conditions. Inthe women’s laser radial fleet of 21 boats, RNSYSsailors Lisa Ross and Danielle Dube (that would beme) tied on points and placed second and thirdrespectively. Erin Rafuse, also from the Squadron, placed 6th, and young upstarts Corinne Peters andMeghan Henneberry finished 15th and 20th. In thelaser radial men’s fleet, Alexander Burke fromHubbards Sailing Club finished 2nd, with JackBignell, Nathan Dunn, Luke Ruitenberg andAlexander Sapp all from the Royal NS YachtSquadron following closely behind. Henry Machum,a former 420 sailor and this year’s Canadian repre-sentative at the Volvo Youth Worlds in Croatia, fin-ished 8th after falling victim to a few letter scores, but showed lots of promise in his racing and I’mconfident that we’ll be seeing great results from himin the future. Welcome to the laser fleet Henry! Andlast but not least, in the laser full rig class, District 1sailors had a rough go of it, with this event being theNational Team Qualifier for the laser fleet, and withthe best from Canada AND the United States inattendance. Anthony Bell of Hubbards Sailing Clubfinished 18th, with fellow Nova Scotian sailorsBryant Wood (LYC/RNSYS), Zachary Dunn(RNSYS), and Max Seward (BBYC) in 20th, 21st,and 23rd respectively. After the Canadian Nationals things quieted downsignificantly in District 1, aside from the laser radialNational Team girls who continued to train both athome and abroad. Lisa Ross moved her training toPerth, Australia where she met up with an interna-tional training group to prepare for the ISAF Worldsin Perth in December. At the same time, Erin Rafuseand I flew to Kiel in Germany, picked up boats, anddrove to Lake Garda in Italy to train with theGerman team. Before returning to Canada we alsotook part in the French Nationals in Hyeres, France. In late November we flew to Perth, Australia tomeet up with the rest of the team and begin acclima-tizing and preparing for the Worlds. On Monday December 5th the racing kicked off inPerth. Day 1 of the qualifiers saw warm weather andsea breeze conditions of 10-14 knots. I had the bestday of the bunch, posting a 13, 16 in the blue fleetqualifying races. Lisa Ross and Erin Rafuse strug-gled in the yellow fleet qualifier, and were quitedeep on the scoreboard by the end of the day. Day 2was called off due to thunderstorms, accompaniedby more rain than Perth usually sees in a month.Day 3 was the final day of qualifiers, with threelong races held in rough, windy conditions. ErinRafuse had difficulty with her speed all day, andconsequently ended up in the Silver fleet. Lisa Rosshad quite a good day, and it seemed that it would beenough to scrape into the gold fleet. Shockingly, when the results came through, she had missed thecut by 2 places. I had a decent day, and combinedwith my results from day 1 it was enough to cementme into the gold fleet. The next day was again longand tiring, with 3 races in varying conditions. Day 5was a lay day with no racing scheduled, and day 6

was the final day of racing with 2 races held in astrong sea breeze. Final results from D1 sailors weremyself in 40th, Lisa in 52nd, and Erin in 77th out ofan extremely tough 102 boat fleet. With the worlds results bringing us up to date at thetime that I’m writing this, we can start looking for-ward to this winter, when there will be a strong D1contingent headed south for regattas in Florida(mainly the Miami OCR in late January, theWomen’s North Americans in the beginning ofFebruary, and the Midwinters East at the end ofFebruary). There, D1 sailors will brush off the dustbunnies and spend some quality time training andracing, which the weather at home usually doesn’tallow for! Look forward to the next report forresults from these regattas, and I’d love to includesome pictures if anyone is willing to send me some!(please send to [email protected]). I wisheveryone a wonderful winter season and a happyNew Year!

District 4Manitoba, CanadaBrigitte Smutny

Greetings to all Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7 andMaster sailors who sail and/or race in District 5!The winter months in our district normally last fromOctober until May with lots of snow, very cold tem-peratures and thick ice on the lakes. To beat thecold and to get their feet wet our provincial team isparticipating in a winter training out of the RoyalVictoria YC in BC. Our big 14 boat trailer and ourmonster truck is parked out there for six month andwaiting for us to be used. The winter training

includes three camps and the Midwinter’s West inAlamitos Bay, CAL.

District 6Vancouver, CanadaAndy Hunt

Greetings from Vancouver. The sailing season in District 6 is slowly windingdown. There is one club, the Surrey Sailing Club, which has a Frostbite Series throughout the winter(November through February) in District 6. Theonly other club that I am aware of that has sailing inthe winter (it is training sessions) is the RoyalVictoria Yacht Club. The other clubs have shutdown their sailing programs and if sailors want tosail or race, they have to do it by themselves (notnecessarily a bad thing).

For regattas, there was one in September (FallDinghy Championships), one in October (PumpkinBowl) and one in November (Bluenose Regatta). The Royal Victoria Yacht Club was the host venuefor the Fall Dinghy Championships which were heldon September 24 and 25. The turnout for all threeclasses (Laser Standards, Laser Radials and Laser4.7s) was low. There were 9 Laser Standards, 21Laser Radials and 6 Laser 4.7s. Unfortunately forthe sailors, the weather did not cooperate. The firstday of the regatta was a wash-out due to a fog bankwhich prevented the wind from appearing. No rac-ing on that day. On Sunday, one race was all thatthe race committee could manage. The race com-mittee tried to run a race in heavy winds in themorning but had to abandon the race. They thenmanaged to get in the one race so that at least theregatta was official. In the Laser Standards, BobBritten won the race while Aiden Koster was secondand Nick Smith was third. In the Laser Radials,Maura Dewey won the race that counted and MaxGallant was second and Chris Wilson was third. The positions of the 6 Laser 4.7s (I want to encour-age more 4.7s) were as follows: Jake Cullen (1);Hayley Linton (2); Graham Brown (3); KyleGerrard (4); Connor Black (5) and Jim Donaldson(6). For those of you who are interested in the scor-ing, details can be found on the RVYC website(www.rvyc.bc.ca). The West Vancouver Yacht Clubwas host to the Pumpkin Bowl Regatta on October22 and 23. There were Lasers (11), Laser Radials(36) and Laser 4.7s (9). Sailors came from all overBC as well as one sailor who came from Seattle. The Pumpkin Bowl Regatta was the last regatta ofthe Helly-Hansen / BC Sailing Youth Circuit. Thiscircuit is made up of 8 local regattas and sailors arescored using a high point system (the more sailors atan event, the higher the score) and use their best 6regattas. For the Pumpkin Bowl, Lasers and LaserRadials sailed on a different course than the Laser4.7s. All of the sailors in the Lasers and LaserRadials were given redress points. There wereenough races that a throughout race was used in cal-culating the scores. The top four Laser Standardswere: Alexander Heinzemann, RvanYC, 9.00; AidenKoster, RvicYC, 14.00; Reid Cannon, RvicYC,16.00 and Cole Wunder, WVYC/NSST, 37.00. Thetop ten Laser Radials were: Natalia Montemayor,RvanYC, 11.00; Maura Dewey, RvicYC. 17.00;Alexander Kroitzsch, RvanYC, 24.00; HanneWeaver, SYC, 31.7; Matthew Turner, RvicYC,32.00; Fillah Karim, RvanYC, 33.00; Ellie Shaw,RvanYC, 41.2; Max Gallant, RvicYC, 43.5; AdrianVlasic, RvanYC, 48.00 and Chris Wilson,WVYC/NSST, 50.00. The top three Laser 4.7swere: Alexander Fritz, RvanYC, 10.00; Jake Cullen,RvanYC, 14.00 and Hayley Linton, RvanYC, 15.00.Complete results for the Pumpkin Bowl can befound on the West Vancouver Yacht Club’s website(under racing) at: www.wvyc.bc.ca. The final regat-ta for 2011 was the BlueNose Regatta. This regattaused to attract upwards of 50+ Lasers but now, sadly, it is considered a success if 10 boats of eachclass (Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7) show up.For 2011, there were 7 Lasers, 11 Laser Radials and5 Laser 4.7s. Each class had 5 races. The KitsilanoYacht Club hosted the event on November 5 and 6.The first race on Saturday was raced in light easterlywinds. The race committee delayed the start of thesecond race while they waited for the wind to switchto the west. When the westerly winds materialized,it was great sailing. The winds were between 10

and 15 knots and the race committee ran three races. On Sunday, the winds did not really cooperate. Onerace was tried but abandoned. The race committeethen waited until almost the time limit (15:00hrs)but managed to get one race off which meant thateach sailor had a throwout race. Most of the com-petitors came from the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. The top three Lasers were:Richardo Montemayor, RvanYC, 5.00; Kyle Martin,RvanYC, 10.00 and Tony Martin, JSCA, 12.00. Thetop four Laser Radials were: Alexander Fritz,RvanYC, 7.00; Becky Power, RvanYC, 10.00;Natalia Montemayor, RvanYC, 10.00 and FillahKarim, RvanYC. The top three Laser 4.7s were:Jake Cullen, RvanYC, 4.00; Hayley Linton,RvanYC, 10.00 and Kyle Gerrand, RvanYC, 12.00.As mentioned previously, Helly Hansen and BCSailing provide sponsorship and support for youthevents. The Helly-Hansen / BC Sailing youth cir-cuit is run throughout the spring, summer and fall.Adults can compete in the events that make up thecircuit but the emphasize is on the youth sailors. Each of the various clubs sends their youth raceteam to as many events as possible. There were 69Laser Sailors who competed in at least one event.Laser Sailors from the Royal Victoria Yacht Clubdominated the top six out of ten positions with theRVYC sailors finishing 1st. (Reid Cannon), 3rd.(Aiden Koster), 4th. (Bob Britten), 5th. (DavidBerry) and 6th. (Ian Elliott). The other top fifteensailors were: Thomas Roehrl, RvanYC (2nd) , KevinGrierson, RvanYC (7th.); Sascha Smutny, JSCA(8th.); Alexander Heinzemann, RvanYC (9th.); Andriy Kanyuka, VSC (10th); Jacek Suski, JSCA(11th); Tony Martin, JSCA (12th.); Emerson Kirby,COSA (13th); Ricardo Montemayor, RvanYC (14th)and Kyle Martin, RvanYC, (15th.). There were atotal of 76 Laser Radial sailors who competed in thecircuit. The top fifteen sailors are: Maura Dewey,RvicYC, (1st); Adrian Vlasic, RvanYC (2nd);Natalie Montemayor, RvanYC (3rd); MatthewTurner, RvicYC (4th.); Chris Wilson, NSST (5th.);Fillah Karim, NSST (6th); Alexander Knoitzsch(RvanYC, (7th,); Max Gallant. RvicYC. 8th),Miranda MacGillvray, RvanYC, 9th.; AustinStewart, HSC (10th); Isabellan Bertold, RvanYC(11th); Joanna Moore, RvanYC, (12th); AdamSorenson (RvanYC (13th), Hanne Weaver, SYC(14th.) and Jamie Bone (15th). There were 16 Laser4.7s in total and sailors from the Royal VancouverYacht Club dominated the top five position, Thesesailors were, Jake Cullen, Hayley Linton, AlexanderFritz, Connor Black and Ben MacVicar. IsabellaBertold was named the BCSailing Sailor of the Yearand the BCSailing Male Youth Sailor of the yearwent to Kyle Martin. If all goes according to plan, the new District 6website (www.district6x.ca) should be up and run-ning in the new year. Mucho thanks to Bob Brittenfor taking on the task of creating the website. Forthose sailors who like to plan ahead, there will be aseries of three regattas in the summer of 2012 on thewest coast. The first regatta will be the 2012 Laser,Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 North Americans, hostedby former District 6 club, the Columbia GorgeRacing Association at Cascade Locks on July 19 –22. The second regatta will be the North AmericanLaser Masters at the Richmond Yacht Club on July27 to 29. The final regatta will be the 2012Canadian Laser Master Championships. This regat-ta will be hosted by the Jericho Sailing Centre andwill be on August 4 to 6. I hope that sailors will be

able to charter the same boat for all three regattasbut that still has to be confirmed by the dealer(s).

The sailors of district 7 have had a busy andvery successful 2011!

First and foremost, a big shout out goes to RobCrane of Darien, CT for his recent success at theISAF Laser Worlds (Perth, Australia), whichsnagged him the berth to represent the USA in the2012 Olympic games!“Its all on the line tomorrow. Two and a half yearsof training are going to come down to two finalraces. If I sail well and get a little luck on my side Iwill qualify for the Olympic games. If not, thisrather looks like the end of the road and a look atthe job market. Tomorrow, my plan is to go outthere and give it everything I’ve got. I will have toget helped out of the boat before I throw in thetowel.” – Rob Crane

Well, if that’s not the Olympic Spirit, I don’t knowwhat is! Rob went out, under pressure and pulled offmore than he needed to, finishing off the regatta(14th overall) with a 1,2 and sealing his spot on theUS Olympic Team.

The fall had some great opportunitiesfor sailors to get out and race. There were 3 majorfall series going on at the same time, offering vari-ous locations for anyone to sail. Furthest south,Brant Beach hosted their annual fall series over 3weekends in September and October. 3 fulls and 2radials sailed in The series. Newt Wattis (Surf CityYC) won the fulls and Paul Meggit (Surf City YC)won the radials. Monmouth had to make repairs totheir bulkhead over the fall and winter, cancelingmany of their events which sadly that included theirpopular frostbite series and fall regatta. Shrewsburytried to get folks over with a fall series and thenlater a frostbite series which lasted all throughOctober. Beachwood also hosts an annual fall serieswith good turnouts every year and able to get all 3fleets out and racing (5 fulls, 10 radials and 4 4.7s).

Brant Beach hosted the High SchoolSinglehanded qualifiers (Cressy) this year again. With another great turnout, 37 radials and 16 fullrigs, each fleet raced 12 races over 2 days and thetop 3 in each fleet qualifying for the finals inChicago.

The first day of October we saw therevival of a regatta in Philadelphia. The PhiladelphiaCup was sailed just off the pier in front of theIndependence Seaport Museum. A great turnout of19 boats (including 2 radials) raced in the river. BenDuPont won the regatta with Mike Russom (UpennSailing) in 2nd and Jack Swikart in 3rd (UPenn sail-ing and first radial). We hope this regatta staysaround; they got a lot of boats out racing in manydifferent fleets (PHRF A and B, Sunfish, Lasers,J/27, J/22, Lightning and Mariner), mostly off of theMuseum, giving spectators a great view.

Marsh Creek hosted their annual FallLaser regatta on October 15th. It was very windyday with steady 20+mph and gusts to 30. 14 boatssailed and many stayed out. Peter Madonna won thetiebreaker to win the regatta. Search “2011 MCSCFall Regatta” on Youtube to find video of theaction/carnage.

There were 2 frostbite series this season.Marsh Creek hosted the Saturday racing whileCooper River was on Sunday. Marsh Creek hostedSunfish, Lasers and Open fleets with as many racesas they could get all for free!! 17 different boatsraced the 5 days with Peter Madonna (Marsh CreekSC) winning the series, Tony Iocono (NYC) 2nd andMohamed Harraz (Marsh Creek SC) in 3rd.

Cooper River hosted their annual frost-bite series over 4 weekends in November andDecember including Thanksgiving. 30 different fullrigs and 7 radials sailed the series which offeredsome great weather (no snow or below freezingtemps), and very trying conditions. Big shifts werenot uncommon as well as major velocity changes. To get an idea of what we raced in you can see thevideo from 2 days courtesy of Craig Priniski(Cooper River YC). Search “Frostbite” and“Frostbite 2” on vimeo.com or check outhttp://vimeo.com/32844470 andhttp://vimeo.com/33105904. John MacCauseland(Cooper River YC) defended his title winning 4 ofthe 5 weekends. Our District 13 enjoyed a very active year. On the

middle of the State, we have fourgood organizations which sponsor Laser sailing allthrough the year. Lake Eustis, Treasure CoastSeries, SunCoast Laser Fleet and ClearwaterCommunity Center. Many more exist around theState and one of my goals for next year is to reachout to all of those Laser sailing pockets so we canreach more sailors and get more aligned. Our webpage is running smoothlyhttp://www.laserdistrict13.org/ thanks to the effortsof our web master Sari Wakefield.

I have a couple of requests for the many Lasersailors in Florida. Please join the Class and visit ourweb page, send in your activities to get published.US SAILING Laser District 13 ChampionsCrowned in Jensen Beach

Two of the three sail plans are used in thequadrennial Olympic Games, the full rig for the menand the somewhat smaller Radial rig for thewomen’s competition. The District 13 championqualifies for higher level championship regattas inthe Laser, with the possibility that the winners atthis weekend’s event could someday represent theUnited States in the Olympic Games.

July 29-31 Masters US Championships - Macatawa

YCSince this regatta was in D19 there was a prettystrong showing of participants from Michigan. Asusual Macatawa Yacht Club did a great job hostingthis event. Results can be found atwww.yachtscoring.comAugust 20 Lake Lansing Annual – story by DougCarlson

All the competitors under one of the sponsors ban-ner - Photo by Stephen WagnerEven with cloudy skies and a forecast of showersand thunderstorms throughout the day, 34 Lasersailors from two countries and three different statesshowed up to participate in the 2011 Lansing SailingClub District 19 Laser Regatta. The morning started with light winds from the southwith the fleet sailing Olympic courses. Not havingsailed on Lake Lansing since 2003, Ken Swetkafrom St. Clair Shores, MI got off to a slow startposting a 7th in the first race. But he soon found hisway posting a 2nd and then winning the next threeraces to earn his first LSC Regatta title. OlavMesserschmidt from East Lansing, MI also startedslow, but his consistency paid off in the remainingraces earning him 2nd place overall and finishingthe highest finish among LSC members. The onlyother racers to post 1st place finishes in the regattawere Jim Meyer from Pinckney, MI and ChadCoberly from Grand Rapids, MI who finished 3rdand 4th for the day. There was special recognition again this year forboth women and junior competitors. SusannaTellschow from Haslett, MI and a LSC member fin-ished 9th in the regatta to top the woman’s group.Isaac Kremers from Ada, MI fresh off of his recentwin at the Western Michigan Yachting AssociationChampionship finished 8th overall to lead the jun-iors.John LeFevre led the Race Committee for the sec-ond year in a row with assistance from, JonathanAhlbrand, Merrick Hurlbutt and Stephen Wagner. The team did a great job of keeping the day movingalong under the threatening weather conditions andgot five races in before the poor weather arrivedforcing the participants off the water early to beginsocializing under the cover of the LSC pavilion.Once the rain passed the grills were fired up and the“you cook-it” BBQ began. This year, grilled cornon the cob was added to the menu of huge steaks, chicken, baked potatoes, ice cream and beveragesprovided by Michigan Brewing Company. No oneleft the regatta hungry! LSC members Julie Pierceand Jim Fletcher took charge of purchasing and get-ting the food ready for what was one of the bestBBQ’s ever seen at LSC. Along with trophies beingawarded to the top finishers, door prizes provided byAvon Sailboats were awarded to the lucky ticketholders. As always the regatta was supported by many LSCmembers before and during the regatta in getting thefacilities ready for hosting this annual event.Everyone was especially appreciative of our regattasponsors, Avon Sailboats and Michigan BrewingCompany, whose contributions continually makethis regatta a special event for everyone that attends.Visit the Lansing Sailing Club site(www.lansingsailing.org) for complete race resultsand our Flickr site <Click here> to view over 450+pictures of the event taken by LSC PhotographerStephen Wagner. Thank you to all our participants and sponsors.

Not much to report from the Dairy State. Boats areput away for the season as we await the arrival ofthe season’s first snowfall (late this year). A few ofyou road warriors will be heading down south dur-ing the off season representing D20 at the upcomingOrange Bowl, OCR, Midwinters East, MasterMidwinter Madness and at Cabarete. Thanksgiving in Minneapolis includes the annualThanksgiving Day Regatta. The Regatta was firstrun in 1980 and has been sailed every year since. Ithink we have been drifted out 2 times and frozenout 3 times. The forecast 50-degree temps helped build enthusi-asm, and we had a great turnout with seven boatsracing. Mike Elson and Larry Saltzman were thereto open the shelter, dig out some marks and providemoral support. Holly Anderson came to cheer us onand take pictures. The Laser group included Bruce Martinson, MikeElson, Lars Hansen, Conner Corgard, Bob Wolf,Jack Bitney, and Jeff Davis. The wind was 6-10 out of the south, and as the dayprogressed, the wind built a little more. This madefor perfect November sailing, not too cold and notso windy that there were many capsizes. In a bigmove at the windward mark, Lars Hansen attemptedto round the mark and roll right into a big gybe onlyto roll the boat right into a perfect capsize. Brucewon several of the starts (he was the rabbit), Bobmade some big moves downwind passing boatsfrom the wrong side of the run! Oh Lake Calhoun!Racing usually ends before noon, so people can getback home to help with Thanksgiving. After wewere all packed up, Connor made the biggest moveof the day. He stripped down to his sailing shortsand took a dive into Lake Calhoun. I wouldn’t call itswimming, but he did get fully underwater.Very impressive and a first for the Annual LakeCalhoun Thanksgiving Day Regatta.

The St. Francis Yacht Club 2011 “Fall Dinghy andOlympic Classes Regatta,” always an unpredictableevent due to the season’s weather potentials camedown to a one race event this year. Last year theplucky fleet was blown off the bay by “live to tellthe tale “gusts. This year an untimely flood currentpressed through the course rearranging the state ofaffairs. Those that hadn’t made the final windwardmark or sufficiently over stood the lay line before itcame waltzing through got reshuffled. The winner ofthe 2011 Slalom and the 2011 Women’s SingleHanded Champion (Peter Shope and ChristineNevelle,) were both uncharacteristically hammeredby the torrent. In the later starting radial fleet, lead-ers Drake Jensen and Jack Barton led respectivelythree quarters of the race, and seemingly had victoryin hand. But they gambled left to soon and bothbecame instant breakfast for Coach Andy Casey’s“radial flyers.” “Nowhere else does the road changeso surprisingly quick;” one competitor was laterheard to say. On the second day no breeze showedup. Oh well, de-rig, pack up and enjoy the hospitali-ty. Those radial kids are making Coach Andy Caseylook good!Full Rig: 1) Peter Phelan; 2) John Andron; 3) TracyUsher; 4) Doug Seeman; 5) Nick Burke; 6) MikeRutledge; 7) Emilio Castelli (19 Boats)Radial Rig: 1) Kyle Larsen; 2) Lola Bushnell; 3)Lawson Willard; 4) Lindsey Baab; 5) Will Dana; 6)Max Hamker; 7) Drake Jensen; 8) Jack Barton (16Boats)The 2011 - Svendsens’ “District 24 Grand Prix.”With a combination of top finishes and competing inat least half of the Northern California GP regattasthe high score champions are Tracy Usher, Full Rig- and Drake Jensen, Radial Rig. A big thanks to“Svendsens Marine” and Alex Jordan again this yearfor all the support and service they provided. ABYC “Turkey Day Regatta” in D25 drew quite afew D24 sailors south to their version of a one dayblowout. Four races were sailed Saturday. Southwestwinds started at 8 knots building with whitecapsto12 knots by afternoon but remained puffy andshifty all day. Drake Jensen lost a tiebreak for fifthwith consistent single digit finishes which is a posi-tive sign for his return to the full rig. Mike Bishoppulled a bullet and a second maintaining good posi-tion for day two.Sunday was cancelled due to 25 to 30kt winds. Justwhat the doctor ordered for some. A bunch of kidsin radials went out and had a blast blasting aroundthe islands for a couple of hours. Plenty of powersafety boats chaperoned.

Full Rig - Drake Jensen 6th,) Mike Bishop 8th,Michael Rutledge 19th, Nick Burke 20th, Will Lowe28th, Corey Lynch 32nd, (35 Boats)Radial Rig – Christine Neville 7th, Kyle Larsen 8th,Lindsey Baab 10th, Lola Bushnell 14th, CalumFinlayson 19, Kris Swanson 21 (44 Boats)

The Richmond Yacht Club, 2011-2012 “MidwinterSeries #1” got a bit lucky with the weather, the daysleading up to the weekend were whipping gusts to70 mph in the higher elevations with rain. Forecastsfor the weekend were accurate, blistery on Saturday,

but light and variable on Sunday (race day,) thenwindy again on Monday. Talk about hit and miss.On race day Sunday the laser fleets drifted out to theSouth Hampton course in the nil southwesterly airwith hopes that the later forecasted 15kt westerlymight come early. One race was completed in thelight southerly. Then around kickoff, (GO 49ERS,)the breeze indicators began fluctuating and soon theRC reset the course in the welcome freshening west-erly. Two more races were completed, including athree lap with a reach leg, making 16 laser and 10radial sailors happy, a fair turn out considering thelight wind forecast kept some from coming. The topthree finishers in both fleets all took a bullet keepingthings tight for the next round. The series is on, onedown three to go. Hope to see some more facesJanuary 8th for #2.Full Rig: 1) Christine Neville; 2) Drake Jensen; 3)Emilio Castelli; 4) Roger Herbst; 5) SteveHendricks; 6) Simon Bell; 7) Mike Bishop (16Boats)Radial Rig: 1) Markus Suorsa; 2) Robbie Englehart;3) Calum Finlayson; 4) Marina Fennell; 5) MichaelLevy; 6) Colin Kermarec; 7) Sarah Lake (10 Boats)

Great News from the RYC! Mark Halman (ProgramLaser Coach/Instructor) has extended the WinterSeries through Spring. There is a lot of interest and excitement for Lasersailing at RYC. Dan Brandt coached five girls:Sarah, Marina, Lauren, Charlotte and Grace-Ann forthe Leiter Cup. Then Sam, Erika, Robbie, LB,David, Charlotte and Oliver joined me in a five-day4.7 Laser clinic in August. These youths had a lot offun. So we are going to add Laser Spring Trainingnext year. Training will be on Sundays from March throughearly June. Spring should give us enough wind tomake Laser sailing really exciting. Each day we planto get video of each participant so that during thedebriefing each person can see things they do welland also see skills to improve. We will also plan to travel to several local Laserregattas (Santa Cruz, Monterey and St. Francis).Three club boats are now available with Radial rigsfor kids without a Laser who want to participate. As this is a new program this will be a pay-as-you-go: $20 for the day (morning coaching and after-noon racing), $10 for just the afternoon racing. I encourage adults to join us. Whether you arepreparing for a serious season of racing or just test-ing out Laser sailing, you are welcome.

The D24 has an impressive bunch of juniors fillingthe ranks, and because several major regattas wereheld in our district this year, several more juniorschose to try the laser experience, hence making thelaser a boat of choice for them. Here are some reports from the D24 juniorsPCISA High School Single Handed Championshipsand Cressy Championship Qualifier (Radial) 35Boats competing1st Kyle Larsen – 5th Lola Bushnell – 10th LindseyBaab – 13th Lawson Willard – 20th Max Hamker –22nd Haley Kardek – 24 Kris Swanson – 30th WillDanaKyle went on to the Cressy Championship inOctober at the Chicago YC and placed 13th out ofthe 18 boat radial fleet.
