Oh No Costco!
IN MEMORI Jim Bohlen Dorothy Stowe
Following Novembers mid-term elections, I
took solace in the words of Martin LutherKing, Jr., who wisely said, We must acceptfinite disappointment, but never lose infinitehope.
Many of the incoming Republicans inCongress deny the reality of global warmingand favor fossil fuels over clean energy, which is definitely a disappointment. However, even with large Democratic
majorities in the House and Senate earlierthis year, the climate bill was killed and the oilindustry won billions of dollars in funding.
The painful truth is that we can no longer relyon the government to deliver the kind ofchange we need for a green and peacefulfuture. We the people are the planets onlyhope, and I have infinite hope in the power ofpeople.
My hope is bolstered by the broad coalitionfrom different political, ethnic, religious, andsocio-economic backgrounds that cametogether in California and defeatedProposition 23. This oil-funded ballot
measure would have suspended the GlobalWarming Solutions Act of 2006, but agrassroots movement of concerned andcommitted individuals stopped the measurein its tracks.
Greenpeace helped lead the charge againstProposition 23, but our efforts would havebeen nothing without the thousands ofpeople who attended rallies, signed petitions, and made their voices heard. On November2nd, the people of California voted downProposition 23 by a wide margin of 21% the most lopsided defeat of any of thepropositions presented to voters in 2010.
Our struggle to prevent the catastrophiceffects of global warming will wage on, withor without the support of Congress.Together, we the people can launch a cleanenergy revolution and affect the changesnecessary for a green and peaceful future. The age of the politician is over; the time forpeople power has come. As always, I thankyou for standing with us in our planets most
desperate hour.

We have seen the dead sea turtles wash

some certainty that the governments co
sions are lost between wishful thinking and
right spin.
Billions of dollars have been spent on clea
and cover-up efforts, but even the most co
vative estimates say that around 170 million
lons of oil still remain in the Gulf and onshorelines of Florida, Louisiana, Mississ
and Alabama. That is more than 10 E
Valdez oil disasters put together.
Though BP dumped nearly two million ga
of toxic dispersant into the Gulf to drive th
out of sight, we know that the long-term ef
of the disaster will be felt here for decade
come.
Where the surface looks clean, plumes o
deep underwater, have billowed out into
open sea, leaving enormous dead zone
their wake. These undersea oil rivers, o
which was estimated to be the size of Man

of these requests was derived from
Greenpeaces ongoing fieldwork, as well
as tips from local activists and reporters.
Some of Greenpeaces demands for
disclosure include:
Information regarding sea turtlesbeing killed in controlled oil burns in
the Gulf region.
Information on any communications
about carcass collection facilities in
the Gulf region.
Information on all internal communi-
cations regarding the 23 blowouts thathave occurred on oil rigs in the Gulf
since 2006.
Information on internal communica-
tions within and between the
Environmental Protection Agency,
U.S. Coast Guard, and BP concern-

Information on all meetings and
correspondence between the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration and BP regarding

We cannot allow the truth to be
submerged any longer. Greenpeacewill continue to expose the real cost of
our oil addiction, while sounding the call
for a permanent ban on all new offshore

our government, disasters like the one

From the worlds largest land predator, the polar bear, to
the ivory-tusked unicorn of the sea, the narwhal, the
Arctic is home to a fascinating array of wildlife. These
creatures have remained virtually undisturbed in their distant
and icy realm for millennia. But today, the Arctic is under
assault as fossil fuel-driven global warming causes the sea
ice that underpins the entire ecosystem to melt away.
Ironically, this decrease in sea ice means that oil companies
can finally get at the fossil fuel reserves once locked underthe Arctics ice-covered waters. In order to prevent an oil rush
from destroying this pristine habitat and the wildlife it supports,
Greenpeace is taking direct action on the high seas.
In early September, Greenpeaces Esperanzaevaded the
Danish navy off the coast of Greenland and deployed a team
of activists onto the Stena Don drilling rig. The Greenpeace
activists successfully shut down the Stena Don operation
for two consecutive days, costing the oil company, Cairn
Energy, precious time while drilling in such a remote
location.
The Greenpeace activists were ultimately arrested
deported, but our determination to go beyond oil rem

that can lead to a Deepwater

that Liberty wont have any significant

If a disaster on the scale of what we
witnessed in the Gulf of Mexico
were to ever occur in the Arctic, the
results would be devastating to the
regions polar bear and whale
populations.
Greenpeace will continue to stand
up against the oil industry and lead
the way toward a clean energyfuture.

Greenpeace on an expedition into the Green Heart of

Second only to the Amazon rainforest in size, the Congo is
home to many endangered wildlife species, like the
mountain gorilla. Nearly 700,000 indigenous people and
millions of Congolese also depend on the rainforest for
livelihoods.

Ive seen how large-scale timber operations are threatening
[some of] the planets last intact forests, said Marion. Theyre
being eaten away from the inside. This extraordinary ecosys-
tem that supports the lives of tens of millions of people and is
the planets second largest green lung is in danger.
At each meeting, during each discussion with the peopleliving there, I could see the looting thats unfolding in these
remote lands: the industrial loggers arrive, hand out a few
crumbs, and then cut down the most valuable wood. This
wood is often exported to the European market where its
sold at exorbitant prices while in the Congolese forests,
workers risk their lives and are often paid less than a dollar
a day.
Cotillards experience was recorded in a series of seven
video diaries, so that the world could share her journey
through the endangered Congo rainforest. At the end of the
Greenpeace expedition, the actress concludes, The only
viable solution would be for rich countries to financially help
the Congolese to protect their forests. Its in the interests of al
of humanity to preserve this treasure: to save whats left o
biodiversity, to fight against climate change, and to ensure the
Democratic Republic of Congo sees genuine development.
Greenpeace is calling for an immediate halt to the expansion
of industrial logging in the Congo rainforest, especially in
intact forests. The people of the Congo are desperately in
need of sustainable development that is both environmentally
responsible and socially equitable. Industrial logging is not the
answer.

In a statement, Burger King said the

about some of the sustainability
practices of Sinar Mas palm oil
production and its impact on the
rainforest. These practices are incon-
sistent with our corporate responsibility
commitments. As a result, we have
decided we will no longer purchase
palm oil from Sinar Mas or its
subsidiaries. We are in the process of
transitioning to a new palm oil
supplier for the 176 Burger King
restaurants that were supplied by
Sinar Mas. In addition, we are
notifying our suppliers of our
intent to discontinue the use of
palm oil supplied by Sinar Mas in

sticks to its pledges.
This is just the latest good news

This shocking witness testi-
mony came from an ex-whaler
who spoke at the trial of
Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki,
the Greenpeace activists also
known as the Tokyo Two, who
were prosecuted for exposingcorruption within Japans
scientific whaling industry.
Despite the overwhelming evidence in their defense, on
September 6, 2010, Junichi and Toru were handed a one year
suspended prison sentence. Greenpeace is now appealing
the Japanese courts unjust and politically motivated ruling.
The freedom to peacefully draw public attention to govern-
ment wrongdoing is not only a crucial part of any democracy
it is an inalienable right that must be defended.
Junichi and Toru undertook great personal risks to investiga
and reveal the ugly truth at the core of Japans taxpaye
funded whaling industry. In May 2008, the activis
intercepted one of 90 huge boxes of prime-cut whale me
being smuggled off a Japanese research ship by t
whaling crew. The box was deceptively labeled
cardboard and was on its way to be sold on the undergrounwhale meat market in Tokyo, where it would have fetche
several thousand U.S. dollars.
This evidence, along with the findings of a four-mon
undercover Greenpeace investigation, was broadcast to t
world and caused an immediate uproar. For the first time
Japans history, the issue of whaling received national med
attention. Furious, the Japanese authorities sent 75 troope
to storm Greenpeace Japans Tokyo headquarters an
arrest both Junichi and Toru.

Instead of investigating and arresting those
behind the whale meat embezzlement
scandal, Junichi and Toru were detained
arbitrarily, forced to live under strict bail
conditions, and put on trial. After more than
two years of political prosecution, the Japan-
ese court has convicted them of theft and
trespass, while the criminals behind the
whale meat embezzlement walk free.
Vigils are being held at Japanese embassies
around the world and hundreds of thousands
of people have already signed our petition
calling for justice. In addition, the Tokyo Twos
case has been taken up by Amnesty

in enormous letters along the airships side to draw
public attention to the companys lack of sustainable
seafood policies and purchasing practices. This flight
marked the launch of Greenpeaces Oh No Costco!
campaign, which continues to wage on in full force.
Some supermarket chains, like Wegmans, Target, and
Whole Foods, have demonstrated a strong commit-
ment to providing safer, more sustainable seafood
options for their customers. Trader Joes also got a
little greener this year, thanks to pressure from
Greenpeace and tens of thousands of people across
the country who demanded change. Now its time toturn the tide against Costco, who refuses to take
responsibility.
Anthony Bolante/Greenpeace Ben Russell/Greenpeace
The company can meet consumer demand for sustainable product
by refusing to sell seafood from fisheries that:
I exploit endangered, vulnerable, and/or protected species, ospecies with poor stock statues
I cause habitat destruction and/or lead to ecosystem alterations
I cause negative impacts on other, non-target species
I are unregulated, unreported, illegal or managed poorly
I cause negative impacts on local, fishing-dependent communitie
Costco needs to stop hiding behind their massive warehouse and
improve seafood labeling practices so their customers will know
exactly what theyre buying. Costco must also stop selling red listeseafood beginning immediately with the conservation-dependan
orange roughy and Chilean sea bass.

Jim Bohlen and Dorothy Stowe
Lest we ever forget that we stand upon the shoulders ofgiants, this issue of the Greenpeace Updateis dedicated
to the memories of Jim Bohlen and Dorothy Stowe, the
two Greenpeace founders who passed away in 2010.
In the spring of 1968, Jim and Marie Bohlen attended an
anti-war demonstration in Vancouver, British Columbia,
where they met fellow Quakers, Irving and Dorothy
Stowe. A year later, when the Bohlens and the Stowes
learned of the U.S. governments plans to test nuclear
weapons on the Alaskan island of Amchitka, they began
meeting with journalists Robert Hunter and Ben Metcalfe
and formed the group that would ultimately become
Greenpeace.
In September 1971, the group attempted to sail a boat
into the heart of the nuclear test and peacefully prevent
the destruction of the island ecosystem. What followedwas a wave of public support that ultimately shut down
the U.S. nuclear testing program, won Amchitka
designation as a wildlife sanctuary, and gave birth to the
Greenpeace movement.
It is amazing, Dorothy recalled in later years, what a
few people sitting around their kitchen table can achieve.
That kitchen table belonged to the Stowes. The mos
fitting memorial for Dorothy and Jim is that we continue to
stand together in the name of peace, justice, and the
living Earth, while maintaining hope in the face of
insurmountable odds. This is all they would have asked
from us.
