New Design for All-Ireland MedalThis year’s Kilkenny hurlers were the first to be presented with the re-designed All-Ireland medal. The original All-Ireland medal, crafted around 1910, drew its inspiration from the Irish High Cross. The new medal features the same cross (an “iconic symbol of Ireland”); the year “1884” (a reminder of the foundation of the GAA and its founding fathers); and the words, “Cumann Lúthchleas Gael” (“symbolising the GAA’s contribution to the preservation of Irish, the oldest written vernacular language in Europe”). Let’s hope it’s not too long before our senior hurlers bring home a set of these new medals for closer examination!

ence as a coach. In the 1970’s, while still a player he coached Antrim. His next port of call was Clare and he trained the Banner County to success in the National League of 1977 and 1978. Justin coached his native Cork to win the Centenary All-Ireland of 1984 before going on to train Cashel King Cormacs of Tipperary who reached an All-Ireland Club Final under his stewardship.

In 2002, Justin became manager of Waterford. That year the Déise won their first Munster senior hurling title since 1963. Justin won three Munster titles and one National League title with Waterford. His autobiog-raphy, “Hooked” is a fas-cinating read for anybody interested in hurling.

Thanks Richie! After two years in charge, Richie Bennis’ reign as manager of the Limerick hurling team is over. Richie’sachievement in guiding Limerick to the 2007 All-Ireland final was phenom-enal. We will treasure this memory and the many other highlights of “The Bennis Era” for years to come. Míle buíochas from The G&W Magazine and allits readers to Richie, Gary, Bernie, Anthony and Tony!

T he curtain has come down on another season of Cumann na mBunscol activity. Across the length and breadth of Limerick, boys and girls have been representing their schools in football competitions. The Sarsfield Cup and the Larkin Shield were contested in recent weeks and already thoughts are turning to next year’s Primary Go Games series. Limerick had a mixed summer on the inter-county front. Hats off to the intermediate hurlers who won the Munster Final but ran into a top-class (is there any other kind?) Kilkenny team in the All-Ireland final. Ian Ryan and his teammates saw Limerick footballers get the victory they deserved v Meath but Kildare blocked the Road to Croker. Speaking of Croke Park, Limerick boys and girls savoured the atmosphere of the Big Match when they played in the INTO Mini Sevens during August and September. Finally, as “The Green and White Magazine” becomes a “teenager” (13-years-old this year!), we say thank you to every club in Limerick for supporting the magazine throughout the years. This support has been invaluable, as has the support of our readers who continue to send in letters, articles, photos and crossword entries. Keep those comments and contributions coming in the New Year… And let’s hope it’s a great year for all things Green & White!

Former Limerick Cumann na mBunscol Star is an “All-Star” with Tipp!Conor O'Mahony of Tipp-erary was selected at centre half back on the 2008 Vodafone and GPA All Stars hurling teams. Conor, who hails from Newport, played in the East Limerick Cumann na mBunscol leagues with Newport BNS and won a Mackey Cup medal with East Limerick in 1996, defeating West Limerick in the final.

GAA 125!In 2009 the GAA celebrates its 125th anni-versary. Cumann na mBun-scol will organise activities to mark this milestone in our sporting and cultural lives. Already, Limerick County Board plans to foster club-school links by inviting primary schools to write a profile of their local club and then publish it on the Wikipedia website. Contributions as gaeilge will be especially welcome.

IanRyanMeet the Limerick scoring sensation who turned down pay-for-play in Aussie Rules football because he prefers Gaelic football. And because he wants to win a Munster Championship medal with Limerick…

Winter 2008 The Green & White

Every season throws up surprises. The news that Limerick footballers were leading Meath in their first round qualifier tie raised a few eyebrows at the time. When listen-ers learned that the margin was twenty points that was a shock! Headlines the following day belonged to Ian Ryan, scorer of 3 goals and three points against the Royal County. Such was the impact that talent scouts from Australian Rules targeted the boy from Shanagolden who went to Oz for trials with Essenden and also had trials here in Limerick for Carlton (club of Setanta and Aisake Ó hAilpín).Was Ian tempted? Not for an instant. “A Munster title with Limerick would mean far more than any honours in Aussie Rules,” was how Ian explained it. The Ryan File starts in the West Limerick Cumann na mBunscol leagues playing in 7- and 9-a-side competi-tions with Loughill NS. Ian moved to Shanagolden when his father Joe, a Limerick footballer himself, was appointed Principal of the school. Although he never made the West Limerick team for the Sarsfield Cup, Ian carried on and wore the Green and White of Limerick at U-14 level, where he came under the influ-ence of Ollie Coffey. Since then it has been onwards and upwards. The match against Meath was the highlight of Ian’s career so far. He is certain the future is bright as, “There are very good young players coming through for Limerick”. G&W

Ian’s Top TipsWhen we met Ian, he chatted as he sipped a bottle of water. “Plenty of water, lots of fruit all year round,” is Ian’s recipe for success. Other advice? “Practise all the skills, especially kicking off either foot”.

One of the wonderful things about the INTO Mini 7’s series is the opportunity it offers to pupils from the smallest schools to play on the biggest stage of all. This summer, Limerick schools, Knockea N.S., Ballybrown N.S., Christ the King B.N.S. and Doon C.B.S. were all represented in Croke Park. Throughout the series, Brother Dormer was ever present behind the scenes ensuring that everything ran like clockwork. G&W

Winter 2008 The Green & White

Jet-propelled Alan

Limerick reached an All-Ireland hurling final for the third time in four years in 2008. Yes, it’s true. The boys in green and white reached the All-Ireland minor final in 2005. Richie Bennis steered the senior team to the final last year. And, in 2008, Limerick reached the inter-mediate decider and were crowned Munster champions along the way. The man who led the team was high-flying Alan O'Connor from Ballybrown. High-flying? Alan is an Aircraft mechanic with the Lufthansa airline. Based in Shannon Airport, Alan explains that, when an aircraft comes in for service, he is part of the team that takes the plane apart and puts it back together again. “The fuel is stored in the wings,” he explains, “so we take off the fuel panels, take out the engines, seats, sidewalls, check everything and put it back together.” Alan takes his seat in the cockpit when the plane is taken for a test run before it is returned to service. Alan lived in Castleroberts when he was a boy so he hurled with Adare before the family moved to Clarina and he joined the Ballybrown club. He played in an Olo Cup final with Ballybrown NS and represented Limerick City in the Mackey Cup.

NEWS EXTRASenior FootballChampionship: 2009 Mickey Ned O Sullivan will be hoping to lead Limerick footballers to a Munster final in 2009. Limerick play Tipperary in the quarter final. The winners will meet Clare in the semi-final. Kerry and Cork are on the other side of the draw. Limerick have not won a Munster Senior Football title since 1896.

Senior Hurling Championship: 2009Limerick’s new hurling manager Justin Mc Carthy will be hoping to put one over on his former charges, Waterford. Limerick meet the Déise lads in the Senior Hurling semi-final with the winners playing one of Clare/Tipperary /Cork in the 2009 Munster Final.

TOM RANDLES Vintage Hurler Tom Randles made GAA his-tory by playing a full hurling match for his club, Kilgarvan (Co. Kerry) at the age of 71. When his local team found themselves a man short for a match in the Junior A Duhallow League, Tom had no hesitation in offering his services and played the full sixty minutes at corner-forward. “It didn’t take a bit out of me,” he reckoned. “I’ve always loved hurling and I keep fit. It keeps the arthritis at bay. I’m used to training. I train with the team when I can. I also run and walk and I love dancing. I do a bit of céilí dancing but, you know, I’d do any kind of danc-ing at all,” he quipped. “I don’t drink and I don’t smoke and it pays off. A fit body is a fit mind, I like to say”. They say a love of football courses through the Kerry blood, but this Kerryman has always had a grá for hurling. “I always loved a puck around. I don’t think that will ever change,” he said. “I’ve togged out with the team once or twice in the past, if a man couldn’t get down because of work or something. I always keep my gear in the boot just in case”.

News in Brief… Who is the Limerickman behind the success of the Kilkenny “Cats”? It’s their trainer Noel Richardson from Ahane who is an Army Officer based in Kilkenny. Ian Ryan (St. Senan’s, Limerick & Munster) has been shortlisted for the title of Young Footballer of the Year 2008. Limerick’s Séamus O'Carroll claimed the 2008 All-Ireland 60 x 30 Handball Minor Singles Final when he defeated Meath’s Gary McConnell in Croke Park. Croom Colossus, John Galvin has been nominated for one of the midfield berths on the 2008 GPA Opel Football All-Stars. The same John Galvin, along with Johnny McCarthy, Stephen Lavin, Ian Ryan and Michael Crowley, played for Munster in this year’s Martin Donnelly Inter-Provincial series. Andrew O'Shaughnessy, Seamus Hickey and Donal O'Grady also represented Munster in 2008, in hurling.

Gary Kirby Master Marksman

Four-time All-Star, Gary Kirby dusted off his famous Shaws jersey earlier this year to participate in the first ever All-Ireland Master Marksman competition. And, just in case there was any question about it, Gary proved beyond all doubt that he hasn't lost his touch when it comes to making a sliothar obey his will.

The CompetitionThe competition took place in conjunction with RTE's Road to Croker series and proved a huge hit with TV audi-ences and hurling fans alike. Gary went head-to-head with Wexford's Tom Dempsey and Antrim's Olcan McFetridge in the early rounds. Winning those matches secured an All-Ireland showdown with Clare sharpshooter, Jamesie O' Connor (“He was the only one who had his own hurley. I borrowed Mark Foley’s, it was a ‘35’ although I always used a ‘36’”, Gary explained). In front of a full house at Croke Park, both men aced their first three frees. The dif-ficulty level increased in the sudden-death play-off. Shooting second, Gary matched each of Jamesie's superb efforts. Two flawless performances, there could be only one result and it was sealed with a handshake. Thunderous applause

greeted the decision to share the title—and the €5000 prize money. “…And it was all for a good cause”, Gary explained, “a couple of days later I took ‘the uncle’ (Richie) for a spin out to Foynes to donate the prize-money to the Brothers of Charity.”

Free-TakingGary's advice to free-takers: “Relax, and don't worry if you miss.” When asked how he practised for frees, Gary explained, “I'd place 3 sliothars left, right and centre on the '21' and three more on the '65.' I'd take the six frees, then go to the goals and puck out the 6 sliothars and shoot for points from where they'd land. Then repeat as necessary...”

Some General Observations on Hurling“I had a long chat with the great Eddie Keher of Kilkenny when I was up in Croke Park. We talked mostly about coaching. He reckoned many players are not being allowed develop their own 'instinctive' game because there's always a coach telling them what to do and where to stand, so when they play they're too inclined to look to the sideline for directions instead of developing their own game. I agree with Eddie because nowadays there's definitely a shortage of players who can really 'read' a game.”

Pat Ryan takes off on a solo run against Scoil Chriost Ri, Caherdavin in the final of the Limerick Leader Cup at the Gaelic Grounds.

The Limerick Leader Cup is contested by the 15-a-side “A” champions of the four Divisions within the county. Doon CBS gave a dazzling display of all that is best in the game of hurling when they defeated City champions Christ the King BNS (by 5-9 to 2-5) to capture the 2008 Limerick Leader Cup. Doon CBS reached the final by virtue of a comprehensive win over Scoil Iósaf of Adare while Christ the King BNS had a mighty battle with Scoil Mocheallóg before emerging victorious on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-3. After the final, Jerome O'Connell of the Limerick Leader presented the Limerick Leader Cup to Doon CBS captain Pat Ryan. It was Doon’s third victory since the competition was revived in 1996 and their first success since 1999 when the team included current Limerick panellists Michael Fitzgerald and Denis Moloney.

The Green & White Winter 2008

Primary ‘GoThe Primary ‘Go Games’ concept is a relative newcomer on the Cumann na mBunscol scene. Playing for the County ‘Go Games’ team is the highlight of the sporting year for many of Limerick’s best young hurlers and footballers. Played in front of huge crowds at Munster’s best venues, these games offer young stars their first opportunity to play in the colours of their county. Players are allowed to represent Limerick only once at this level. The reason for this is to maximise the number of starlets who get a chance to play for their county. This explains why an entirely new Under-13 team is picked for each fixture, be it football, hurling or camogie.

Full Marks for County Final InnovationThis year’s County Senior Hurling and Football Finals saw a welcome innovation as the primary schools of the parishes of Adare & Ahane (hurling) and Drom/Broadford & Ballylanders (football) played exhibition matches as curtain raisers to the respective County Finals. (More photos on Page 24) The Ahane team consisted of players from Lisnagry N.S., Castleconnell N.S. and Ahane N.S., coached by George Lee and Paul Kennedy. Barry O'Riordan took charge of an Adare selection that was made up of players from Scoil Iósaf and Shountrade N.S. Thrilling International Rules Victory for Ireland!Congratulations to all involved in Ireland’s victory over Australia in the 2008 International Rules series. Ireland won the first match by 45 points to 44. They won the second match by 57 points to 53. Unfortunately, there were no Limerickmen on the panel, although John Galvin and two or three of his Countymen undoubtedly would have been well up to the standard required.

Dear Sirs, I certainly enjoyed reading the most recent issue of The Green and White, particularly the page on “Why the GAA is Better than Soccer”. I especially liked comment number 7 (soccer teams are numbered like lottery results!) Best of luck for the new school year,Peter MullanSenior Official (INTO)

Dear Sirs,

I have been involved with the GAA all my life, as has my

family. In my opinion there is no game on earth as thrilling

to watch as a good hurling match. All that comes close is a

good football match. I don’t think any other association can

inspire such passion, dedication or pride as the GAA,

especially at grassroots level. However when I read the

latest issue of The Green and White, I was disgusted with

the petty, small-minded and immature content of one of the

articles, entitled, 'Why GAA is better than soccer'. Perhaps

it was meant to be tongue in cheek, but considering the age

profile of your readership, I think it was quite

inappropriate. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the

definition of 'sportsman-like' is...'behaving in a fair and

respectful way towards the opposing team or player when

playing a sport'. Based on this definition, I don't think your

article was particularly sportsman-like. Soccer is a sport, just

as apples are fruit. Gaelic football and hurling are sports,

just as oranges are fruit. Just because I like apples does not

mean I can't like oranges. I can like both. Kids can like

Gaelic and soccer, the two are not mutually exclusive! Surely

the important thing is that the kids are out in the fresh air

playing, competing and living life and not whether they are

playing soccer or football. I really would expect more from a

magazine that purports to encourage young people in sport,

than simply taking cheap shots at another sport. From my

personal experience GAA has nothing to fear from soccer,

so there is no need for petty insults. I would hope we (GAA)

are better than that?

Yours truly,

Concerned Parent
