The Event Saturday’s game will mark the 17th meeting between the Rams and the Bears, who have not met since the 1978 season when WSSU current Director of Athletics William “Bill” Hayes led the Rams to a dominating 72-0 win over the Bears in Raleigh, North Carolina. Not only will Saturday’s game be one of the biggest games of the season for both teams, the game will be televised on WAUG in the Raleigh, N.C. area and on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. A Quick Look The Rams sport an entirely new look. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Connell Maynor the Rams look nothing like the 2009 team that posted a disappointing 1-10 record. The Rams welcome the services of 14 first-class freshman recruits and an entirely new coaching staff with the exception of defensive line coach Mike Ketchum who is the only holdover from last season’s staff. A bevy of talented wideouts led by freshman Tehvyn Brantley and junior Dominique Fitzgerald. The duo has done it all this season as they have combined for nearly 700 receiving yards this season. Fitzgerald add-ed a bit more to his reputation as he threw a 28-yard touchdown pass in the Rams’s win at Fayetteville State.

The CoachesThe Rams are coached by first-year man Connell Maynor, a veteran of more than 20 years of football experience both as a player and coach - and most recently as the offensive architect of the 2009 CIAA Champion Fayetteville State University Broncos of-

fense, serving as both Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach - who was named the eighth head football coach at Winston-Salem State University on Dec. 15, 2009. Maynor won his six of his first seven games as a college head coach, but took a 40-35 home loss to the Saint Augustine’s Falcons last weekend. Cur-rently, Maynor is 6-1 as a head coach.

The Bears are led by head coach Darrell Asberry, who is in his fifth season with the program. Under his guid-ance, the Bears have won a pair of CIAA championships and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2007. For his career, Asberry is 32-18 in five seasons at Shaw.

Maynor and Asberry will square off for the first time, Saturday.

Opponent’s Superalativesfootball over six times in the tough loss.

The effort set a season-high for the team total turnovers in a game. The Rams committed five pass interceptions with a fumble lost in the game.

The Butler Did ItWSSU sophomore wide receiver has hit a great stride for the Rams with four touchdowns in the last two games for the Rams. After earning a start with an injury to freshman Tehvyn Brantley, Butler stepped up his ef-forts with two receptions for 86 yards and two touch-downs against the Livingstone Blue Bears and followed the effort with three receptions for 85 yards and two touchdowns against the UNC-Pembroke Braves.

Super CooperRunning back Nicholas Cooper has picked up right where he left off at the end of the 2008 season. Follow-ing a season off in 2009 to concentrate on academics, Cooper has returned to form.

He dominated the Chowan Hawks with 149 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries. Cooper carried the ball 20 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns versus the Panthers of Virginia Union and carried the ball 15 times for 57 yards against Division I-FCS North Caro-lina A&T. He continued last weekend with 14 carries for 88 yards versus Division I opponent North Carolina Central. He added 124 yards on 15 carries at Johnson C. Smith last Saturday.

Cooper recorded a season-high 175 yards and three touchdowns in a dominating 58-0 win over the Living-stone Blue Bears.

1,000 in SightWSSU redshirt-junior running back Nicholas Cooper will have a chance to become the Rams’ first 1,000-yd rusher since Martin Hicks and Jed Bines did it during the 2004 season.

Cooper currently has 960 yards rushing this season and needs just 40 yards to reach the 1,000-yd mark.

Brantley Making NoiseTrue freshman wide receiver Tehvyn Brantley is leading the team in receiving with 35 catches for 553 yards and four touchdowns. Brantley is averaging an astounding 15.8 yards per catch and 79.0 yards receiving per game.

Brantley sat out Saturday’s game with a concussion, but is very likely to return to action this weekend.

Air Force SixSophomore quarterback Kameron Smith may have at-tended the U.S. Naval Academy before joining Winston-Salem State, but the quarterback seems more suited for the Air Force as he has completed 106-of-169 passes for 1,458 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Five Touchdown PassesQuarterback Kameron Smith threw for five touchdown passes last weekend in the Rams’ victory over North Carolina Central. Smith completed 18 of his 29 passes for 294 yards and five scores. Through his first two games, Smith threw for six touchdowns and has yet to

throw an interception.

Thayer Nearly PerfectWSSU sophomore kicker Landen Thayer has yet to miss a field goal this season. Thayer is five-for-six on field goal attempts and has connected on 37-of-41 PAT kicks.

Mr. VersatilityWinston-Salem State defensive lineman Juan Corders has done a little of everything for the Rams through the first four games of the season. In addition to total-ing 19 tackles this season, Corders leads the team with 4.0 sacks and has picked up five fumble recoveries and returned them for 115 yards.

The Durham, N.C. native added to his resume Saturday when he rushed for 56 yards on a fake punt against Chowan. He was tackled just four yards shy of the en-dzone on the play.

Division I Transition DecisionWinston-Salem State University (WSSU) announced on Sept. 11 that it would inform the National Colle-giate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Mid-East-ern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) that the university intends to remain a Division II institution for intercol-legiate athletics. The process to remain in Division II will begin immediately, but the school will continue to compete in the MEAC at the Division I level through the 2009-2010 season.

At a special called meeting, the university’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to support the recom-mendation of Chancellor Donald J. Reaves to bring to a close the reclassification to Division I process that was begun in 2004. Reaves praised the vision of for-mer WSSU chancellors who had supported the move to Division I, but stated that “in the final analysis the resources to complete the reclassification simply were not available, currently nor prospectively, in sufficient amounts”.

“This decision is probably the hardest one I have ever had to make because I believe that WSSU belongs in Division I,” said Chancellor Reaves. “If there were any reasonable way to complete this transition without di-verting resources from competing academic priorities, I would have recommended that we stay the course.

“Over the past two years, we have continued to be concerned that budgetary constraints would not al-low us to successfully complete the transition,” Reaves added. “As the athletics deficits continued to mount, there appeared to be no rational way we could con-tinue the process. I believe that this is the right decision for WSSU at this point in time given our resources.

“Our goal now is to complete the move to NCAA Division II and find a conference home for our athletic program before the 2010-2011 season begins. We have been reviewing all of the options in our region and our preference would be to return to the Central Intercol-legiate Athletic Association (CIAA). We will, however, have to complete the reclassification process with the NCAA and file a letter of interest with Commissioner Leon Kerry at the CIAA.”

The spending side of the budget for the WSSU athlet-ics program has grown during the three-year period of 2005-2006 through 2008-2009 from approximately $2.88 million to $5.58 million while total revenue grew from $2.07 million to $3.77 million. Just for the fiscal year that ended June 30, the athletic program generat-

WSSU At A Glance ed a deficit of approximately $1.8 million. The increase in expenses was directly connected to the transition to Division I which requires that an institution field a minimum of 14 teams and add substantially more resources such as scholarships, coaches and facilities.

“While our expenses have increased as one would reasonably expect, the budget problem that we have encountered is a revenue-side problem” Reaves added. “Currently, nearly 80% of total revenue comes from a single source, student fees. While the university has the second highest athletic fee in the UNC system, our fee is among the lowest in the MEAC where we are competing. With the size of our student body, it became evident that we were always going to be at a financial disadvantage.”

UNC President Erskine Bowles also expressed sup-port for Chancellor Reaves’ recommendation. “I know that Chancellor Reaves explored every viable option before reaching this difficult decision, but in the end WSSU - like every other UNC campus - must operate its athletic department on a fiscally responsible basis. And it cannot put the burden of doing so all on the backs of its students. Particularly in light of current economic conditions, Chancellor Reaves made the hard - but right - choice to put academic priorities ahead of athletic aspirations.” “Even though the decision has been made to remain at Division II, we will continue to develop options for increasing revenue for our athletic program,” said Reaves. “We have increased our marketing efforts for the 2009 football season and we hope that will sup-port our efforts to increase ticket sales, sponsorships and other fund-raising activities.”

The process of reclassifying the WSSU athletic pro-gram to Division II will begin with a letter of intent to the NCAA Division II Membership Services Sub-Committee. The university will also have to reduce the size of its athletic program from the Division I to the Division II level, which includes reducing the number of athletic scholarships. There also may need to be re-ductions in the size of the athletic staff in order to generate the savings needed to run the program with-in the parameters of the resources that are available. “With regard to our students-athletes, some of whom will be affected by this decision, we will be work-ing with each affected-student to ensure that to the extent possible they are held harmless. Those who may be affected by this move, either through loss of scholarship or the move from Division I athletics, will be given as much guidance and assistance as pos-sible,” Reaves explained. “While our athletic program is very important to the university, our number one short-term priority is the well-being of our student-athletes.”

2010 WSSU Football Season PreviewWith a rich tradition of success and a storied his-tory in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the Winston-Salem State Rams will make a return to the conference this fall. The Rams will have an almost entirely new look when the team makes its return to the CIAA with a new head coach, a re-vamped coaching staff and a host of newcomers, the 2010 Rams will look to make their return to the scene of former glory a triumphant one. For the first time in over 17 years, the Rams will open the season under the guidance of a new head football coach as Connell Maynor steps in to lead the team in 2010. Maynor succeeds Kermit Blount, the winningest head coach in WSSU football history who concluded a 17-year head coaching career by becoming the Spe-cial Assistant to WSSU Director of Athletics, William

“Bill” Hayes.

Maynor, a veteran of more than 20 years of football expe-rience both as a player and coach - and most recently as the offensive architect of the 2009 CIAA Champion Fay-etteville State University Broncos offense, serving as both Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach - was named the eighth head football coach at Winston-Salem State University on Dec. 15, 2009.

Maynor brings more than two decades of football experi-ence both as a coach and as a player in the intercolle-giate and professional ranks and is the proud owner of 10 championships, six as a player and four as a coach.

Maynor comes to WSSU by way of Fayetteville State Uni-versity where he spent the last 10 seasons as a member of the Broncos’ award-winning football staff, most recent-ly serving as both the Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator where he helped to lead FSU to four CIAA title game appearances and three CIAA Championships (2002, 2003 and 2009).

Maynor’s offensive unit produced two All-CIAA quarter-back selections (2002 and 2003) and ranked first in the CIAA in rushing offense, total offense and scoring in 2008 en route to a 13th-place national ranking in scoring of-fense and a 39th-place national ranking in total offense in Division II in 2008. He and his coaching staff will look to immediately make an impact at WSSU as he attempts to guide the Rams to their ninth conference championship.

OffenseThere will be little time for offensive growth as the 2010 Rams offense will return just six offensive starters from last season’s team. The team will expect production from their newcomers almost immediately as questions will need to be answered in both the passing attack and along the offensive line. Connell Maynor and the Rams will rely heavily upon a talented crop of newcomers, nine of which will join the WSSU offense.

QuarterbacksThe quarterback position will be a key piece of the Rams’ puzzle in 2010. However, with the departure of last sea-son’s leading top two passers, the Rams will need some immediate help at quarterback this fall. The Rams will be without the services of former Ram quarterback Jarrett Dunston. For the past two seasons, Dunston has been the team’s top signal caller and leading passer. During that time, Dunston amassed 1,597 passing yards and 10 touchdowns.

This season, the Rams will look to a cast of newcomers at the quarterback position. Redshirt-sophomore Kameron Smith had an impressive spring and is the likely candi-date to earn starting duties this fall. He was especially impressive at the Rams Spring Game where he completed four-of-eight passes for 35 yards and led the Red Team with 49 rushing yards on six carries. Joining Smith will Octavious Hawkins, a talented athlete who transferred to WSSU after spending two seasons at the University of Massachussetts.

Wide Receivers/Tight EndsLast season, the Rams struggled in the passing game, totaling only 1,061 passing yards in 2009. As a team the WSSU receivers averaged 10.9 yards per catch and the team managed just 11 passing touchdowns for the season. The tables are likely to turn this season with a talented and experienced group of receivers returning in the fall. The Rams will return with a solid wide receiving corps as three starters return from last season. The trio of senior Omar Kizzie, junior Dominique Fitzgerald, and redshirt-senior Johnathan Kinzer will return to lead the Rams re-

SBN Black College Football Poll (as of 10/26/2010)

The Poll Vault (as of October 26, 2010)ceiving efforts this season.

Fitzgerald will join Kinzer as a key performer for the Rams this season as Fitzgerald led the team in touch-downs last season with four. At 6’0”, 180 pounds and with solid speed, Fitzgerald will look to stretch the field for the Rams and give the team a scoring threat on every play.

The Rams will also break in a trio of tight ends with fresh-man Jamal Haizlip, junior Stephen McMillan, and redshirt-sophomore Lamarcius Jenkins combining to shore up the WSSU receiving efforts. None of the three players have ever caught a pass for the Rams, but will look to make an immediate impact this season.

Running BacksA powerful rushing attack has always been a trademark of Rams football. The tradition is likely to continue this season when the Rams welcome back the tandem of redshirt-senior Cedric Hickman and red-shirt junior Nicholas Cooper.

As a team, the Rams totaled 1,274 rushing yards with four touchdowns in 2009. Leading the way for the Rams this season will be Hickman a physical, bruising running back who was a key performer for the Rams. Last season, Hickman led the Rams with 263 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning TD at Bethune-Cookman.

Cooper sat out the 2009 season to focus on academics after a great redshirt-freshman campaign. However, he is poised to return to the Rams this season after an impres-sive 2008 that he finished with 488 yards and four touch-downs on 92 carries. He looks to be no worse off fol-lowing his year away from the game as he had a breakout effort in the Rams’ spring game where he finished with 13 carries for 37 yards and three touchdowns.

The Rams will also look for a contribution from WSSU newcomer Daryl Thomas, Jr. from Safford, Arizona. After a solid career at Safford High School, Thomas had a strong spring game effort with five carries for 35 yards.

Offensive LineIn order for the Rams to succeed in the passing game or in the running game, the team will need a solid effort out of its offensive line. The unit is likely to be a strong one, but will have some holes to fill with only two returnees from last season’s squad.

Redshirt-sophomore Travis Taylor and sophomore John Crawley will look to lead the way on a WSSU offensive line that will need three players to step and contribute for the Rams right away. Maynor has bolstered the offensive front a pair of high school standouts as both Kaleb Carter (6-4, 280) and Thomas Warren (6-2, 280) join the Rams’ roster in 2010 after stellar senior seasons.

DefenseThe Rams will have their work cut out for them on the defensive side of the football with only three starters returning. Last season, the Rams allowed 3,304 yards of total offense and 31 touchdowns to opponents. However, the team will look to bounce back under the guidance of Coach Maynor and defensive coordinator Kienus Boul-ware.

Defensive LineThere will be an entirely new look on the Rams’ defensive line as the team will need to replace the entire front line. Though the defensive line will be short on experience, there is no shortage of talent along the WSSU defensive front line as a talented group of newcomers will look to step in and contribute for the Rams.

The tandem of redshirt-junior Corei Plummer and redshirt-sophomore David Harris will look to lead the way for the Rams on the defensive front. Plum-mer played in the 2007 and 2008 seasons, but sat out the 2009 season. In his career, Plummer has totaled four total tackles, including three solo tack-les. He had a solid performance at the 2010 WSSU Spring Game with three total tackles (two solo).

Harris has also played a pair of seasons for the Rams with three total tackles, all during the 2008 season when he recorded a solo tackle and a pair of tackle assists. He also recovered a fumble last season.

The duo will need to provide some quality lead-ership on the Rams’ defensive line as Maynor and the Rams welcome four defensive lineman and a linebacker as part of WSSU’s 14-player high school recruiting class.

LinebackersThe Rams’ linebacking corps will feature a number of young, talented players, but will also benefit from some strong leadership as senior linebacker Juan Corders will look to lead a young linebacking unit for the Rams in 2010.

Corders has been a staple for the Rams over the last four seasons. However, he will be recover-ing from a season-ending injury suffered at South Carolina State last fall. The redshirt-senior has to-taled 146 career tackles for the Rams with a pair of forced fumbles. He has also added 6.5 total sacks for his career. The senior will line-up with three newcomers in the starting lineup at the linebacker position this season.

SecondaryThe Rams’ secondary will be one of the more experienced units on the team as redshirt-senior defensive backs Jaquin Sessoms and Marvin Bohan-non will both suit up for the Rams this fall.

In three seasons of play, Bohannon and Sessoms have been quality players and solid contributors to the Rams’ squad. Between the two of them they have totaled 57 total appearances in uniform for WSSU. Bohannon has been one of the top defen-sive backs on the Rams’ squad, playing in 32 games with a pair of interceptions and 90 total tackles. He has also added three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Sessoms has also been strong, playing in 25 games during his career and totaling 33 tackles with a fumble recovery.

With the two players returning, the Rams’ second-ary is likely to be a strong point for the team this fall as they return to the CIAA, a conference that is not short on accurate quarterbacks and speedy wideouts.

Special TeamsKickers/PuntersThe Rams will return with a solid kicking game when sophomore Landen Thayer returns to handle kick-ing duties for the team this season. He contributed greatly in 2010 and gave the team an immediate quality scoring option as well as some quality field position in the kicking game. Last season, he was 9-of-16 on field goals and missed just one PAT kick. He also averaged 40.5 yards per punt. This season, the Rams will count on Thayer to provide a quality performance and shore up the team’s kicking efforts.

Return SpecialistsThe Rams will also benefit from returning a pair of experienced return specialists as punt returners Dominique Fitzgerald and Alton Keaton will return to the team this fall. Fitzgerald led the team in punt returns, averaging 13.4 yard per return with a long return of 46-yards. Keaton returned a pair of punts for 22 total yards and an 11.0 yard-per-return aver-age. Keaton returns as the team’s top kick returner with 214 yards in returns. He averaged 21.4 yards per return with his longest effort being a 35-yard re-turn against the Delaware State Hornets last season.

With the talented and experienced trio returning, the Rams’ special teams unit will have a chance to be one of the best in recent history.

OverviewFor the fifth straight season the Rams will take on the rival North Carolina A&T Aggies and the North Carolina Central Eagles, this time with both games on the road. WSSU will boast a quintet of home games with three of those contests coming in three consecutive weeks in the month of October. The Rams will open the season at A.J. Simeon Stadium in High Point, N.C. in the first-ever Furniture City Clas-sic as WSSU plays host to the Panthers of Virginia Union University.

Though the Rams will have a number of questions, there will be no doubt that the team will play hard and compete, making their return to the CIAA a successful and triumphant one. Under the guidance of new head coach Connell Maynor and a revamped coaching staff, a quality cast of returnees and talented cast of newcomers the Rams look to be geared up and ready for a return to glory this fall.

Connell Maynor, a veteran of more than 20 years of football experience both as a player and coach - and most recently as the offensive architect of the 2009 CIAA Champion Fayetteville State University Broncos of-fense, serving as both Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach - was named the eighth head football coach at Winston-Salem State Uni-versity on Dec. 15, 2009.

Maynor, a former standout football student-athlete at both Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina A&T State University was selected from a talented pool of more than 75 applicants representing 17 states in the Rams’ national search to find a head coach to lead WSSU’s historic football program.

Maynor brings more than two decades of football experience both as a coach and as a player in the intercollegiate and professional ranks and is the proud owner of 10 championships, six as a player and four as a coach.

Maynor comes to WSSU by way of Fayetteville State University where he spent the last 10 seasons as a member of the Broncos’ award-winning football staff, most recently serving as both the Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator where he helped to lead FSU to four CIAA title game appearances and three CIAA Championships (2002, 2003 and 2009).

In addition to his collegiate coaching responsibilities, Maynor served as the Offensive Coordinator for the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul from 2006-2008 where he helped to lead the Soul to the Arena Bowl XXII World Championship in 2008.

Under his leadership the Soul ranked first in scoring offense (62 ppg), touchdowns (132), touchdown passes (102) and red zone efficiency (85 percent) in 2008 en route to an Arena Bowl title.

Maynor’s successes come not only as a coach but as a player as he has earned six championships as an athlete.

The starting quarterback for the Rams’ 1987 CIAA championship foot-ball team under then-head coach and current-WSSU Director of Athlet-ics William “Bill” Hayes, Maynor was named to the All-CIAA team as a freshman after passing for 1,071 yards.

After following Hayes to North Carolina A&T State University, Maynor was named First-Team All-MEAC in both 1990 and 1991. In addition to All-MEAC honors Maynor was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year and was honored as the 100% Wrong Club Player of the Year in both 1990 and 1991 en route to leading the Aggies to the 1991 MEAC Championship.

A veteran of 12 years in the Arena Football League (AFL) Maynor is a four-time AFL World Champion having led the Tampa Bay Storm to the 1993 and 1994 World Championships in addition to quarterbacking the Orlando Predators to the 1998 and 2000 World Championship titles. For his effort, Maynor was named the Arena Bowl Most Valuable Player in 2000.

A veteran of both the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Maynor has extensive experience at the both the Division I and Division II levels and has demonstrated ex-tensive recruiting acumen which will immediately help him at Winston-Salem State University as he prepares to lead the Rams’ back to glory.

Bill Hayes, whose career in college sports spans 36 years, has been serv-ing as the Director of Athletics at Winstnon-Salem State University since January 1, 2010.

Hayes comes to WSSU from Florida A&M University where he served as the Director of Athletics for two years. In a two-year period that spanned from Dec. 4, 2007 until Jan. 1, 2010, Hayes was instrumental in reviving the Rattlers’ storied athletic program.

“We are absolutely delighted that Bill has agreed to come home to Win-ston-Salem State,” said Chancellor Donald J. Reaves. “We conducted an extensive search to find the right person with the right credentials who would be able to immediately make a difference in our athletic program. Bill Hayes certainly fits that description. I am truly delighted that he has accepted our offer, and I want to thank the search committee and its chair, Dr. Dennis Felder.”

“Over the years, Bill has maintained ties with the university and with our community,” Reaves added. “Having him in this key position will certainly support our efforts to build our athletic program to the championship level.”

“As a former athlete and coach, I have an abiding passion for athletics and the betterment of our young people through sports,” Hayes said. “Also, having worked at WSSU under the legendary Clarence ‘Big House’ Gaines years ago, I have a true appreciation for the great tradition of Rams’ sports.”

Hayes joined Florida A&M in January 2008 after serving as athletic direc-tor at North Carolina Central University for nearly five years. He also served as head football coach at N.C. A&T State University for 15 years after leaving WSSU in 1987. In addition to posting the most wins of any football coach at both WSSU and N.C. A&T, he led major fundraising efforts during his tenure as athletic director at both Florida A&M and N.C. Central.

Hayes also served as an assistant football coach at Wake Forest Uni-versity for three seasons, becoming the first African American assistant coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

A member of the Sports Halls of Fame for both WSSU and N.C. Central, he was also inducted in the CIAA Hall of Fame. Hayes has been active in the Boy Scouts of America and received its highest regional award for a volunteer in 2001. He was selected as MEAC Football Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1999 and was CIAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2006 and 2007.

“Based on Bill Hayes’ track record, I feel confident that he will make a major contribution to our athletic program immediately,” said Felder. “I was, however, extremely impressed with the number and the quality of the applicants for the athletic director position. We had applicants from all levels of athletic programs, from large and small schools, and from public and private institutions. To me, that illustrates the reputation and tradition that WSSU has in academics and athletics.”

The selection committee, which included faculty, students, staff and four alumni members, worked over the last six months to fill this position from among more than 175 expressions of interests, nominations and applications.

Game #1August 28, 2010WSSU 47, Virginia Union 13High Point, N.C.A.J. Simeon Stadium (8,210)

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Connell Maynor head coaching era at Winston-Salem State University opened with a bang on Saturday evening at A.J. Simeon Stadium as the Rams offense turned in their largest scoring output since 2003 en route to a 47-13 victory over visiting Virginia Union University.

With a sea of red over 8,000 fans strong, the Rams returned to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) with a convincing performance that saw them easily defeat a Virginia Union University team that finished tied for first in 2009 and missed a conference title game berth by virtue of a coin-flip tiebreaker.

The Rams mounted an early offensive onslaught that saw the Rams score on five of their six first-half possessions as WSSU posted three touchdowns and a pair of field goals en route to tallying 27 points, more first-half points than Winston-Salem State scored in any game in 2009.

Landen Thayer’s pair of field goals and three Rams’ touchdowns earned WSSU a lead that would never be in jeopardy as Winston-Salem State opened their season with a victory for the first time since the 2007 season.

The Rams’ offensive attack continued in the third quarter as Tevin Brantley pulled in a pass from quarterback Octavious Hawkins for a 47-yard score and Nic Cooper rushed for his second touchdown of the game on WSSU’s first two possessions of the second half, pushing WSSU’s lead to an insurmountable 40-0.

“I’m just happy for the guys. They’ve been working hard for the last month,” WSSU head coach Connell Maynor said. “This is how that hard work pays off. I’ve won titles, I’ve won championships. This is for the fellas and for my coaches and most importantly for the people who support us,” Maynor added.

Maynor, the Rams’ first-year head coach looked anything like a rookie as he orchestrated a nearly even mix of running and passing plays that led to six touchdowns (four rushing, two passing) and two field goals as WSSU recorded 393 yards of total offense.

The Rams defense, not to be outdone by their offensive counterparts held VUU to 278 yards of total offense, forced four fumbles, all of which the Rams recovered and did not allow the Panthers to score until late in the third quarter.

“I told our guys that we had to take care of the football and we did,” Maynor said. “We didn’t have a turnover and our defense had four takeaways and put us in position to score all night long. That was the difference for us,” he added.

The win improves the Rams to 1-0 on the season and drops Virginia Union to 0-1 on the year. WSSU will look to move to 2-0 overall when they return to action on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 6:00 p.m. as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University in the I-40 Showdown.

WSSU Games In Review (Games 1&2)

Game #2September 4, 2010WSSU 21, North Carolina A&T 14Greensboro, N.C.Aggie Stadium (21,500)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The fifth-annual I-40 Showdown between the Rams of Winston-Salem State University and the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University would come down to a drive dominated by a player with virtually no knowledge of the long-standing rivalry. Redshirt sophomore Kameron Smith, a transfer from the U.S. Naval Academy, accounted for 65 yards and the game-winning touchdown on the Rams final drive en route to propelling WSSU to a 21-14 victory over

the rival Aggies on Saturday evening in Greensboro, N.C.

The contest would prove to be a matchup of two staunch defenses as both the Rams and Aggies used a physical style that generated a total of eight fumbles and two interceptions and held the two powerful offenses to a combined 464 total yards.

The Aggies struck first as Mike Mayhew capped a 12-play, 56-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter of play to give the Aggies a 7-0 advantage. Mayhew, the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, powered his way into the endzone for his first score of the season to put the Rams behind for the first time all year.

WSSU answered back less than nine minutes later as Landen Thayer connected on a 22-yard field goal that cut the Aggies’ lead back to four points as the sophomore kicker moved to a perfect three-for-three on field goal attempts in 2010.

The Rams would take their first lead of the game with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter of play when Kameron Smith connected with Virginia Tech transfer Patrick Terry on a 20-yard touchdown strike following an Aggie turnover.

The score was set up by Alton Keaton’s sack and strip of Shelton Morgan that the Rams’ Juan Corders recovered at the Aggies’ 46-yard line. The fumble recovery, Corders’ fifth of the season, gave the Rams positive field position en route to taking the lead.

The Rams added to their advantage less than five minutes into the fourth quarter of play as Thayer’s second field goal of the game, this time from 41-yards out, pushed the WSSU lead to 13-7.

Playing at home in front of a packed house of more than 21,500 fans, the Aggies would need only 12 seconds to retake the advantage at 14-13 when Justin Ferrell took the ensuing kickoff 76-yards to pay dirt with 10:28 remaining in the contest as the Aggie faithful erupted in excitement.

After back-to-back drives that ended in futility, the Rams would get one final chance, a chance that Kameron Smith, who checked into the contest after replacing starter Octavious Hawkins, did not squander.

Smith accounted for 65 of the Rams 78 yards on the game-winning drive as he rushed for 52 yards, including a 38-yard breakout and completed a 13-yard pass before powering his way into the endzone from seven yards out to give WSSU the lead for good with only 41 seconds remaining.

Not content with his touchdown, Smith found fullback Tyrone Goldston on a screen pass to complete the two-point conversion and push WSSU’s advantage to the final margin at 21-14.

Game #3Sept. 11, 2010WSSU 34, North Carolina Central 27Durham, N.C.O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium (9,711)

DURHAM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University football team is 3-0 for the first time since the 1991 season following their heart-stopping 34-27 victory over the Eagles of North Carolina Central on Saturday evening in Durham, N.C.

The WSSU defense held the Eagles to 365 yards of total offense and Rams’ quarterback Kameron Smith threw for five touchdowns as Winston-Salem State stayed unblemished in 2010 and improved to 2-0 versus Division I opponents.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Rams drew first blood as Kameron Smith found redshirt freshman fullback Tyrone Goldston in the endzone from eight yards out to cap an eight-play, 55-yard drive that gave WSSU an early 7-0 lead.

The Goldston touchdown snapped North Carolina Central University’s 80-minute, 42-second streak of holding their opponents scoreless as the Rams pulled out ahead of the Division I-FCS Eagles.

WSSU would strike again only 6:05 later as Smith found freshman Tehvyn Brantley on a screen pass which Brantley took 62 yards for a touchdown. Landen Thayer’s point after touchdown would give the Rams a 14-0 lead with little more than seven minutes left in the opening half of play.

To the Eagles’ credit they would drive 48 yards in the final 2:18 of the half yet would settle for only a 20-yard Frankie Cardelle field goal as the experience-laden Rams’ defense held NCCU out of the endzone.

Following the halftime intermission the opening moments of third quarter action would prove to be eventful as the two teams combined for 17 points in less than 10 minutes as the Eagles opened the half with another Cardelle field goal, this time from 34 yards out, to cut WSSU’s lead to eight points at 14-6.

The Rams responded less than three minutes later as Dominique Fitzgerald turned a simple screen pass on third down and five into a 50-yard touchdown to cap a six-play, 63-yard drive to move the Rams’ advantage to 20-6.

In front of a home crowd of 9,711 the Eagles wasted no time in responding as Arthur Goforth took the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown for NCCU’s first kickoff return for a score in over five years, tying for the third longest play in school history in the process.

The score would mark the first of three Eagles’ touchdowns as North Carolina Central turned a 14-point deficit into a seven-point advantage over the span of only seven minutes and six seconds.

NCCU continued their turnaround with a Tim Shankle one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 20-20 little more than four minutes later. The Eagles were not done as Tony McCord would follow it up with the longest run in NCCU history as he scored from 93 yards out to give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 27-20 with 12:09 remaining in the contest.

Like a pair of prizefighters trading blows, the Rams would respond as Kameron Smith found fullback Tyrone Goldston for his second score of the day to tie the game at 27-27 capping an eight-play, 58-yard drive that spanned 3:37.

Driving downfield with a chance to win the game with only a field goal, the Eagles were well within field goal range when they took a chance by challenging University of Miami transfer Rashaun Jones on a deep shot at the endzone.

Jones responded by picking off the Eagles’ attempt at the game-winner in the endzone, setting up what would be the Rams’ game winning drive.

Building on the momentum of Jones’ interception, the Rams responded with a three-play, 80-yard drive that took only 25 seconds. Following a stalled first down, Nic Cooper ripped off a 49-yard run on second down and Tehvyn Brantley caught his second TD of the game, this one proving to be the game winner as he hauled in a Kameron Smith 31-yard scoring pass.

Game #4Sept. 25, 2010WSSU 48, Chowan 7Winston-Salem, N.C.Bowman-Gray Stadium (7,247)

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nothing went right for the Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday evening at Bowman Gray Stadium as the Rams of Winston-Salem State rolled up 499 yards of total offense and put 48 points on the scoreboard to defeat Chowan 48-7 at Bowman Gray Stadium as WSSU improved to 4-0 in 2010.

The Hawks started the game with a five-yard delay of game penalty before the opening kickoff and it would only get worse for visiting Chowan as WSSU would need less than five minutes to jump out to a 14-0 advantage.

Tehvyn Brantley got the Rams on the board only 1:09 into the contest as he reeled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Kameron Smith to give WSSU a 7-0 lead as the true freshman wide receiver scored his fourth touchdown of the year.

Only three minutes and 41 seconds later Nic Cooper scored the first of his four touchdowns on the day as he powered his way in from nine yards out to push the Rams’ advantage to 14 points.

Cooper would score again with 11:33 remaining in the second quarter and again with 8:33 remaining in the opening half of play as he found the end zone from one yard and 52 yards out respectively as the Rams powered ahead to a 28-0 advantage.

Following the Hawks’ lone first-half touchdown, Cedrick Hickman caught a five-yard Kameron Smith scoring pass as WSSU closed the first 30 minutes of play with a 34-7 advantage.

Cooper, not satisfied with his three touchdown performance during the game’s first 30 minutes, would wait only 2:55 to score again as he broke out for a 74-yard scoring run on the Rams’ first offensive play of the second half as WSSU pushed their advantage to 41-7.

With his fourth score in the books, Cooper would be finished for the day as he tallied 149 yards on 11 carries with a career-high four touchdowns. Cooper would close the day with more rushing yards (149) than the Hawks would tally in total offense (146).

“That is the Nic Cooper that we have all been waiting to see. He really broke some tackles and made some long runs tonight” WSSU head coach Connell Maynor said. “That’s the Nic Cooper we hope to see the rest of the year.”

The win improves the Rams to 4-0 on the season (2-0 CIAA) while Chowan drops to 0-3 overall (0-2 CIAA) with the loss.

Winston-Salem State University returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 as they travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to face two-time defending CIAA champion Fayetteville State University at 6:00 p.m.

CIAA Southern Division and sent a message to both the team and opponents. “Fayetteville State is the defending champion and they were picked to win it again so we had to come on the road and play them and we came on the road and got it done,” WSSU head football coach Connell Maynor said following the victory. “I don’t know if it’s a statement game, but the rest of the CIAA knows that we beat Fayetteville State and they were picked to win.”

The Rams utilized a punishing offensive effort to take their fifth straight victory as the team totaled 397 yards of total offense while holding the defending CIAA champion Broncos to just 217 yards.

Leading the way for the Rams was sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith who completed 15-of-21 passes for 211 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Also impressive was freshman running back Daryl Thomas who rushed for 114 yards on 10 carries. Redshirt-junior running back Nicholas Cooper carried the majority of the workload for the Rams with 42 yards on 19 carries while carrying a host of Bronco defenders along the way. It was junior wide receiver Dominique Fitzgerald who had the busiest day for the Rams, however, as he caught four passes for a team-high 81 yards and recorded a receiving touchdown and passed for a touchdown in the win.

As to be expected, Saturday’s game began with a bang as the Rams and Broncos combined for 21 first quarter points with the Rams taking the early 14-7 lead. WSSU wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as both of the team’s first quarter scores came in the first six minutes of play. The team opened the game with a bang as Smith connected with junior wide receiver Dominique Fitzgerald for a 46-yard touchdown pass at the 13:02 mark. The play nearly didn’t happen as the drive was kept alive when the Broncos were called for roughing the punter on a WSSU fourth down. With momentum on their side, the Rams forced an FSU punt on the ensuing Bronco drive and drove the ball 63 yards for their second score of the game. It was Cooper who would cap the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. The ensuing PAT kick put the Rams ahead 14-0 with 9:15 left in the first quarter. The momentum would swing back to the home team, however, as the Broncos mounted an 89-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run of their own to cut the WSSU lead down to seven points, 14-7 with 4:46 left in the first quarter.

With the offenses dominating the first quarter, the two defensive units stepped up their efforts as neither squad allowed a second quarter score. Though the Bronco defense would force a pair of WSSU interceptions, the Rams never allowed the Broncos to capitalize as they held them out of the endzone to take the 14-7 lead into the locker room at the half.

The intense battle between the teams continued into after halftime with the Rams fighting their way to a 21-7 lead when Fitzgerald threw a 28-yard wide receiver option pass to sophomore wide receiver Patrick Terry to put the Rams ahead by two touchdowns with 13:55 in the third quarter. The Rams would go on to pad their lead when sophomore kicker Landon Thayer connected on a 27-yard field goal at the 5:28 mark in the third quarter. The field goal put the Rams in a comfortable position as the team took a 24-7 lead in the game and never looked back. Redshirt-junior running back Cedrick Hickman would cap the Rams’ lead when he caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Smith that put the game out of reach. 31-7. The Broncos wouldn’t give in just yet, however, as the team blocked a WSSU punt to set up a one-play 36-yard touchdown pass that left the Rams leading 31-14 with 4:54 left in the game. With the victory well in hand, the Rams ran out the clock and sealed their third road win of the season.

Though the Rams are on a likely path to a showdown with the Shaw Bears, Maynor is quick to note where the Rams’ focus lies. “We’ve got to get ready for Johnson C. Smith right now,” Maynor said. “We take them one game at a time. We can’t overlook anybody. We respect all, but fear none.”

Game #6October 9, 2010WSSU 49, Johnson C. Smith 3Charlotte, N.C.American Legion Memorial Stadium (8,625)

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-0, 4-0 CIAA) dominated nearly every aspect of the game when the team took a 42-3 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (1-4, 0-2 CIAA), Saturday evening. In front of a most red & white crowd, the Winston-Salem State Rams rolled up 491 yards of total offense and held the Golden Bulls to just three points in the dominating victory.

“The guys came out and executed very well. We didn’t give up a lot of points, but we gave up a bit much in terms of yards,” WSSU head football coach Connell Maynor said. “Overall, we came out pleased. We came out here and we did what we had to do, but we’ve got to get back. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

The potent WSSU offense was on full display in the game with the Rams putting up at least 40 points for the third time this season. The combination of WSSU sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith, freshman wide receiver Tehvyn Brantley, and redshirt-junior running back Nic Cooper powered the Rams to the big victory. Smith connected on 15-of-22 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the game with Brantley as his favorite target with eight catches for 143 yards. Cooper added 124 yards on 15 carries for the Rams.

The Rams defense played a strong “bend-but-don’t break” effort in the game, allowing 224 yards and 16 first downs to the Golden Bulls. But ultimately, the efforts led to just three points. “We gave up a lot of yards,” Maynor added. “They got a lot of first downs on us so we’ve got to keep working on that. WE’ve to keep getting better.”

The Rams found themselves in a battle early with Johnson C. Smith pushing a pair of drives inside the WSSU five-yard line in the first quarter, but the WSSU defense held strong and forced turnovers on downs on both of the drives. With the WSSU defense holding serve early, the WSSU offense began to click late in the first quarter when Cooper pushed his way to his first score of the evening, a one-yard touchdown dive at the 3:31 mark in the first quarter. The score gave the Rams the boost that they needed as the team scored three second quarter touchdowns. The first came on a six-yard pass from Smith to junior wide receiver Dominique Fitzgerald at the 7:42 mark, followed by a Cooper two-yard TD run at the 1:44 mark.

In the final seconds of the half, the Rams capped their stellar quarter with a 2-yd TD pass from Smith to senior tight end Brian Wynn at the 00:13 mark. The Rams were able to hold off the Golden Bulls and take the 28-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

The second half turned out to be more of the same as WSSU redshirt-freshman fullback Tyrone Goldston powered his way to a one-yard touchdown run, carrying a host of Golden Bulls into the endzone with him. The score came at the 13:11 mark in the third quarter and put the Rams ahead 35-0. Though the Rams defense continued their push, the Golden Bulls were able to get onto the scoreboard with a 22-yd field goal at the 7:58 mark.

The score was all that the Rams would allow as the team capped the night with a six-yard touchdown run by junior running back Daryl Thomas, Jr. with 1:44 left in the game. With the score, the Rams ended the night with the 49-3 victory.

With the win, the Rams improve to 6-0 and remain a perfect 4-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Rams will head into one of their biggest games of the season next Saturday when the team hosts the Saint Augustine’s Falcons, who are also undefeated in CIAA play. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start at Bowman-Gray Stadium. Game #7Oct. 9, 2010Saint Augustine’s 40, WSSU 35Winston-Salem, N.C.Bowman-Gray Stadium (5,547)

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-1, 4-1 CIAA) simply ran out of time when the team took a 40-35 home loss to the Saint Augustine’s Falcons (5-1, 4-0 CIAA). After falling behind 37-7 in the third quarter, the Rams mounted a furious comeback that the team nearly pulled out in their first loss of the season.

It was turnovers that plagued the Rams in the tough loss as the team gave the ball away six times in the loss, including five interceptions.

“We take our hats off to Saint Augustine’s. They were a good team,” WSSU head coach Connell Maynor said after the emotional loss. “You can’t expect to get a win when you turn the ball over that many times against a good team.”

The loss came in spite of some great individual performances, including 143 rushing yards by WSSU redshirt-junior running back Nicholas Cooper. Junior wide receiver Dominique Fitzgerald added 91 receiving yards on six catches.

The Rams picked up a bad omen early when the team committed its first turnover of the game after just six seconds when sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith threw an interception on the Ram’s first play. The turnover would lead to the first of three Falcons touchdowns on their first three drives, two of which came on WSSU interceptions and left the Rams trailing 14-7 after the first quarter. Things got no better for the Rams as the team allowed 16 unanswered second quarter points and fell behind, 24-7 heading into the locker room.

After allowing another Saint Augustine’s touchdown and falling behind 37-7, the Rams began their comeback with five-yard touchdown pass from Smith to senior tight end Brian Wynn. Cooper would keep things going with a nine-yard touchdown run in the early fourth quarter that would keep the effort going. Fitzgerald added a 51-yard touchdown pass from Smith with 6:45 left to play that cut the WSSU deficit down to 16 points 37-29.

The Falcons would end the WSSU threat, connecting on a 42-yard field goal with 1:40 left to play. A 14-yard pass from Smith to Brantley would give the Rams a bit of life, but the effort was not enough as the Rams ended the night with the loss.

The Rams won’t have long to rest, however, as the team will host the Livingstone Blue Bears next Saturday. For more information on Rams football, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2909 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.

Game #8Oct. 16, 2010WSSU 58, Livingstone 0Winston-Salem, N.C.Bowman-Gray Stadium (7,210)

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-1, 5-1 CIAA) got back to their winning ways with a dominating 58-0 win over the Livingstone Blue Bears (0-8, 0-4 CIAA), Saturday. The Rams dominated every aspect of the game with 474 yards of total offense while holding the Blue Bears to just 109 yards of total offense in their biggest win since 1978 when former Rams head coach and current WSSU Director of Athletics William “Bill” Hayes led the team to a 72-0

win over the Shaw Bears.

Coming off of their first loss of the season, the Rams bounced back in a big way with WSSU ground game leading the way. WSSU redshirt-junior running back Nicholas Cooper led the way with 175 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 54-yard second quarter run. Four of the Rams’ eight touchdowns came on the ground. The Rams were also strong through the air with sophomore wide receiver Jahuann Butler, who got a start today in place of injured freshman Tehvyn Brantley, leading the way with two catches for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith threw only 10 passes with seven receptions and a pair of touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Dominique Fitzgerald also had a great game with 175 yards in punt returns, including a 35-yard touchdown return in the second quarter.

The Rams got things going early with a pair of first quarter touchdowns. It was Butler who put the Rams on the scoreboard first with a 33-yard TD catch from Smith at the 7:44 mark. Cooper would add another score with a 23-yard TD run.

It was in the second quarter that the Rams did the majority of their damage with 24 points, beginning with Fitzgerald’s punt return touchdown at the 13:53 mark. The WSSU offense would kick into high gear in the final four minutes of the half with three WSSU scores before the half. Butler would get things started with a 53-yard touchdown reception from Smith, followed by Cooper’s 54-yard run. WSSU sophomore kicker would cap the effort with a 45-yard field goal at the half. With the score, the Rams took a 38-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Rams kept things going in the second half with Cooper powering his way into the endzone on a five-yard touchdown run at the 5:29 mark. Freshman running back Kayvonne Spriggs added a six-yard touchdown run at the 00:16 mark.

With the game well in hand, the Rams capped the game with a 20-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Octavious Hawkins to Jonathan Kinzer at the 4:31 mark. With the score, the Rams capped their scoring and sealed the 58-0 win.

WSSU Games In Review (Games 9&10)

Game #9Oct. 23, 2010WSSU 21, UNC-Pembroke 7Winston-Salem, N.C.Bowman-Gray Stadium (18,214)

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-1, 5-1 CIAA) defense stole the show in a 21-7 homecoming win over the UNC-Pembroke Braves (5-3), Saturday afternoon. The Rams’ defense stepped into the forefront as the Rams held the Braves to just one score in the critical victory. Though the WSSU defense allowed 282 yards of total offense and 18 first downs, but unit held the Braves to just one score in the win.

With a tremendous crowd that nearly filled the entire Bowman-Gray Stadium, the Rams defense took center stage to key the homecoming victory. It was a total team effort by the Rams defense with five WSSU players totaling six tackles each in the game. Of the six was senior defensive back Marvin Bohannon, Jr. who added an interception as well. Offensively, the Rams played a solid game that saw the unit quietly record 346 total yards. Sophomore quarterback Kameron Smith was especially efficient in the game, connecting on 12-of-21 passes for two touchdowns and one interception. Smith also added 69 yards rushing in the win. WSSU sophomore receiver Jahuann Butler had his second straight big game with three catches for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The effort marked his second two-touchdown game in a row. Redshirt-junior running back Nicholas Cooper quietly had a big game as well with 109 yards rushing.

In the early going, the game was a tight affair with both teams stalling on their opening drives, but the Rams were able to get into the scoring column first when Smith connected with Butler for their first touchdown of the day, a 47-yard strike at the 7:02 mark in the first quarter. Smith and Butler would connect for their second touchdown of the day early in the third quarter. This time, it was a 30-yard pass from Smith that put the Rams ahead 14-0.

The Braves would respond, however, with a four-play drive that ended with a touchdown by senior running back Keith Gore at the 8:20 mark in the second half. The score would be all that the WSSU defense would allow as the team took a 14-7 lead into the locker room at the half.

In the second half, the Rams would face an improved UNC-Pembroke defensive effort, but still managed to return to the endzone when Smith scampered for a six-yard touchdown run with 5:16 left in the game.

The two-touchdown advantage turned out to be all that the Rams needed as the team held the Braves scoreless for the rest of the game. One of the critical points of the game came when the WSSU senior defensive end Akeem Ward forced a UNCP fumble at the WSSU 21-yard line with 8:41 left in the third quarter. The turnover ended the Braves’ best scoring opportunity of the half as the WSSU defense held on for the victory.

With the win, the Rams managed their first homecoming win since the 2006 season when the team defeated the Howard Bison, 12-0.
