WINNER’S REPORT
Moynalty, Co. Meath
Overall Development Approach:Moynalty is welcome to the 2013 National SuperValu TidyTowns Competition; thank you for the copy of the three year plan for your lovely village, together with the school’s Biodiversity document and the proposed Outdoor Community Art Exhibition document. Communication via text, email, website and Facebook is an environmentally friendly approach as it does not waste paper resources. It is satisfying to read your perception of the benefit of the competition to rural Ireland. The decision to update the Tidy Town Plan on a yearly basis and to engage the entire community in this undertaking is adventurous and an ambitious one, particularly in relation to internet research. Your adjudicator agrees that the completion of the application form is too big a job for one person and that there should be shared responsibility. Moynalty’s participation in and Silver Medal Award at the international LivCom 2012 in Abu Dhabi is impressive; it is no surprise to your adjudicator that Moynalty is one of the most liveable communities in the world.
The Built Environment:The Village Stores looks well with its feature of the treasure from the Donore hoard; the storage of goods directly inside its windows is a little surprising and your adjudicator is of the opinion that an opportunity for an attractive window display to enhance both the building and the streetscape is lost. All
buildings in the centre appear to have been recently painted and without exception look well; the excellent presentation to schools, cemetery and church indicates to the travelling public that one has arrived at some place special. The painting of the wall at the clinic is noted in addition to improvements to the roof of the Hall.
Landscaping:2000 trees planted in Moynalty and environs is an impressive number by any standard. The construction of new stone flower beds on all approach roads and at the tennis courts is an attractive development, ensure that these are maintained and planted for year round interest and colour. Flower displays throughout Moynalty are profuse and colourful although one or two container displays did not appear to be thriving. The entrance to the steam threshing field looks well and the polished granite inserts into the stone wall here are a handsome feature. Tree sculpting on the Kells road is a wonderful formal welcome feature, complemented by beautifully maintained grass verges and signage. Grass verges on other approach roads enjoy good maintenance also and are complemented by maturing trees and hedgerow.
Wildlife and Natural Amenities:The Outdoor Gym facility is an excellent amenity development together with the BBQ installation at the tennis courts; the intention to expand on the gym facility is favourably
I R E L A N D ’ S T I D I E S T TO W N
22noted and cognisance is also taken of your tree trail, nature trail and many other wildlife developments. The habitat needs of bats, birds, ducks, insects and beehives all seem to be accommodated in Moynalty and it is good to note the activities/project work of the school children; (and thank you for the results of the bird survey). The little cemetery with attractive features and designated wildlife area is charming; the sports ground (approx a mile out the Carlanstown road) is neatly presented however the walls could be cleaned or painted and the car parking area resurfaced; young trees planted here are maturing nicely.
Litter Control:Litter control is excellent in Moynalty; twice daily litter picks is unquestionably the most effective tool for maintaining the village litter free; it is good to note the weekly input from Meath County Council; the thrice yearly litter workshops must be making a significant contribution to the standard of litter control; congratulations on your Gold Medal success in the Litter League competition, it is well deserved! Segregation of litter for recycling is favourably noted, as is participation in the National Spring Clean.
Sustainable Waste & Resource Management:The variety of initiatives for the management of waste and resources in Moynalty is impressive from water butts through to composting, food waste, the creation of Eco Briquettes, workshops and fundraising. The waste minimisation surveys of schools,
businesses and households are invaluable also. For the future, focus on surveys and other initiatives for waste prevention at source. Commendations are extended to the school for their Green Flag success and mobile phone recycling activities. The recycling point enjoys good maintenance and the use of the vacant shop window as an information/educational tool on the decomposition times for varying materials is effective. The organisation of a bulk buying scheme for fuel is an interesting initiative and we would like to hear about its outcome next year.
Tidiness:Moynalty’s wirescape free village centre enhances its streetscape immeasurably as does the removal of service poles and their replacement with attractive lamp standards. The installation of a community TV aerial which obviates the need for individual aerials is an added bonus. The yearly painting of premises and gates including field gates is indicative of the strength of community spirit within the village. The painting of the derelict building on Carlanstown Road and the mural on old Fire Station house adds to the already tidy appearance of Moynalty which is commendable.
Residential Areas:A charming little residential development, which is beautifully maintained and presented, located just off the Carlanstown road was admired. Stone boundary walls to dwellings and fields are also an attractive feature. It is good to note the support the
I R E L A N D ’ S T I D I E S T TO W NI R E L A N D ’ S T I D I E S T TO W N
23committee receives from residents by annual painting of dwellings and boundary walls.
Roads, Streets and Back Areas:The presentation of street furniture is excellent and the twenty five new lamposts are noted in addition to bollards, namestones, gates and other items of street furniture. The new stone flowerbeds were admired also as was the new stone wall to south of threshing field. Other work accomplished for this year such as the restoration of the old piggery, the creative use of the phonebox as an information point and the new pedestrian crossing on Mullagh road is acknowledged as is the use of the Irish language where appropriate and possible.
General Impression:Moynalty is a beautiful village where the quality of life seems to be life enhancing. Planning permission for a new initiative in the Threshing Field is noted and the planned installation of solar powered lights along the Threshing Field Walk is eagerly anticipated. We look forward to the results of your research on the Mill Wheel project.
Second Round Adjudication:It was a genuine pleasure for the 2nd Round Adjudicator to visit Moynalty once more. The quality and content of the entry material was admired, as was its succinct presentation. Congratulations on your international award, one which is no doubt richly deserved. A very high level of care was evident - even on the less than sunny
day upon which the adjudication took place. Weed and litter control were seen to be excellent. The presentation of buildings was uniformly impressive. The threshing field is a huge area to keep in pristine condition but yet you have achieved this. Your plans for this area are indeed ambitious. The outdoor recreation areas of Moynalty seem to keep getting better. It is hoped that these are used to their fullest. The high quality of pavement and road surfaces was noted. The new planting areas look really well. Moynalty seems to have taken well to the Sustainable Waste & Resource Management category and have introduced some innovations to this. Biodiversity is taken seriously here with particular effort from the school. Overall, great attention to detail is a lasting impression from a visit to Moynalty.
