AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS
I am both honored and humbled to serve on the board for AAF Dubuque. Since joining the team in 2015, I’ve seen the hard work and dedication that my colleagues and fellow-servants on the board exude, and it’s truly inspiring. It mirrors the hard work and talent put in at all levels of entries we saw in this year’s competition. Needless to say, if this is your first time looking through one of these winner’s tabs, you are in for a real treat.
The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of the interests of advertising and public relations. Chartered nationally and powered locally, our club is run by a volunteer Board of Directors who generously dedicate their time, talents, and resources. Our goal is to provide exceptional programming and lively networking opportunities for anyone personally or professionally.
I love this dynamic career we’re all in. What other industry has a gathering of artists like this from so many different backgrounds? The amazing work you will see throughout this year’s AAAwards is a carefully curated gallery of all the best advertising artistry from our local professionals and students over the course of 2019. Designers. Musicians. Painters. Filmmakers. Writers. All coming together to tell brand stories in their respective medium.
I firmly believe that there is nothing more powerful than the arts. The ability to have an audience and command their attention, there is nothing better. To be able to make others laugh or cry. The ability to affect and change how people think. It’s a great privilege to be donned with such a task. We all share in the esteem of having a career that cultivates so much creativity and passion, and it’s a gift that we can experience that with each other at events like this.
I attended my first local AAAwards back in 2011, and it was a watershed moment in keeping me in the area. This is why I sought to join the board, and this is why I have invested so much of my time and resources into the ad club. It’s extremely important to keep networking organizations like this alive for future and current professionals. Keeping talent here in Dubuque should be a priority of all of ours. Competition and innovation will always bring out the best in all of us. I hope you feel the same, and I’ll be sure to see you at any and all future AAF Dubuque events.
A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
GREG DIETZENBACH McCullough Creative
MICHAEL MANNING Heartland Financial
The Silver Medal Award was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's
standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.
The AAF Dubuque Member of the Year Award is given to an individual who has worked hard over the year to be a driving force behind the American Advertising Federation of Dubuque.
This year’s winner is an absolute beast. After graduating from Hawkeye Community College in 1998, he started in a graphics department helping produce small signage-related projects. His distinct creative abilities were quickly recognized, and he was moved to a designer position, where he further excelled. When the time came for his company to hire a creative director, he was able to take the reins and continues to flourish in that position. He ensures a top-quality product not just through his own talents, but also by encouraging his team and moving them to create beyond what they thought they were capable. He regularly amazes everyone lucky enough to work with him.
Advertising—especially in the world of branding—is only as effective as it is interesting. It must demand and hold attention by offering something people have never seen before—or at least by painting it in a new light. This year’s winner brings this approach to everything he does. A common occurrence is to sit down with a client who had been trying for years to think of a way to overcome a marketing challenge, with no luck. Somehow, our winner is consistently able to say off the cuff, “Maybe we should try this?” and the client stops, looks at us with a stunned face, starts nodding, and says, “Huh, I never thought of THAT!” The benefits of his creative thinking extend beyond a single ad or campaign—they help raise the quality level of advertising in our area and change perceptions on what it could and should be.
This year’s Silver Medal winner continuously gives back to students by volunteering for portfolio reviews at NICC, Hawkeye Community College, the University of Dubuque, and the annual Addy Student Talk Back. He graciously takes job-shadow students, interns, and student-mentorship participants under his wing to show them the ropes of the industry and how to be most successful within it. He is not only a mentor and coach to new professionals in the industry, but also to those of us who have been in it longer than he has. He constantly learns and freely shares his insights with those around him. His ability to push for bold ideas and bring out the best in everyone he works with—both coworkers and clients—is inspiring and adds fuel to the industry’s fire. By being around him, you don’t just get better at your job—you get better at life.
He physically lives in Iowa, but his influence has become global. He runs in various artistic circles that include people from every nook and cranny of the world, helping inform and inspire them to create in their own communities. His passion drives him to constantly create, which is embodied in his Chalk the Walk entries; countless illustrations for teachers, colleagues, and others; comic strips; outrageous Halloween costumes; a “Stormtrumper” figurine that was featured on the cover of a prominent Spanish magazine; and even a children’s book he wrote. On top of that, if the true goal of a human is to leave the world better than they found it, he is accomplishing that twofold through his children, Ada and Milo. The lengths he goes to ensuring they are equipped to take on the world is inspiring and impressive.
Over the course of his career he has won numerous Best of Show, Top Ten, and Final 15 Addy Awards; has had many features in Print Magazine, Communication Arts, and other industry pubs; and now, the AAF Silver Medal award. Congratulations Greg Dietzenbach of McCullough Creative!
AMERICAN ADVERTISING FEDERATION OF DUBUQUE Member of the Year
The AAF Dubuque Member of the Year Award is given to an individual who has worked hard over the year to be a driving force behind the American Advertising Federation of Dubuque. Nominees are active participants not only in club activities but also in planning events and volunteering time. Our recipient this year is true not only of these qualities but many more.
This nominee joined the Board in 2018 as our At-Large Director but transitioned to the Programming Director his second year. Eager to get involved and familiarize himself with the Board, he showed up with a great attitude – soaking in everything AAF, offering ideas, and volunteering his time. From the very beginning, it was apparent that anything with which he is involved, he will go above and beyond. It was evident; this nominee was going to be a significant asset to our club!
The aim of the Programming Director is to track down captivating and engaging speakers who address diverse topics within the marketing and advertising industries. While he did bring in exceptional speakers to discuss all things marketing, he went a step further. He brought in speakers from other professions to connect their industry to marketing, such as a human resources executive to discuss recruitment marketing and a state representative to share how she utilized marketing and public relations to win her election.
In his free time, he competes in races that test your mental and physical strength, watches Marvel movies, and theorizes about everything related to the Marvel Universe, shreds his snowboard at the local ski resorts, and spends time with his wife and daughter. Oh, and he drinks the occasional White Claw every now and then...
As the Senior Digital Marketing Professional at Heartland Financial USA, Inc., he helps develop and manage the high-level digital marketing strategy, as well as ensures the digital channels’ strategies all connect seamlessly. He has extensive experience in and knowledge about strategic planning, customer relationship management, content management systems, email marketing, digital advertising, and social media.
He’s a great mentor, co-worker, leader, and friend whom others can rely on for thoughtful insight, knowledgeable answers, clear direction, and a good laugh. He encourages others to reach their full potential and to improve their capabilities by working on things beyond their current skill set. He’s not shy to share his opinion about quite literally anything, whether it regards marketing strategy, tactics, and content… or Apple versus Google products. He makes every day at work fun, exciting and enjoyable; but, if you see him chugging a Monster at 8 a.m., just know you’re in for a long day.
It is our pleasure to present this Year’s Member of the Year to Michael Manning!

SHANE VAN BOXTEL
25 years a Photographer / D.P. I’ve experienced the world change from film to digital. Hours spent in darkrooms rocking trays and hanging prints on clothes lines has transformed into hours spent on computers and laptops and even phones in hopes that a image will make it to paper. I still believe today the best advice I’ve heard are the survival instructions of Chet Ripley given to his son upon his first time out on water skies, “go loose”. Everything changes, big and small. The ones that survive are the ones that can deal with change. The ones that don’t necessarily cling to the technologies as much as the craft itself. The craft of being creative and embracing every aspect of it. do, I will, because I love this job.
CASEY LIDDICOAT
Casey’s first foray into production was a full-time editing gig while in college – and he’s been honing that craft ever since. After producing countless brand videos, TV shows, and short films, he still hasn’t wavered on the infinite value of the perfect cut. He’s also a hall-of-fame rambler, in business and in life. Thinks life is a movie and he’s the star. Crazy proud (and endlessly terrified) father of two. Otis Redding junkie. Crossword finisher, sometimes.

NUMI ORGANIC TEA REDESIGNHannah Ingles, Clarke University
SUPER DUPER SNACKS “BAGS”Charlotte Rodewald, Clarke University
NUMI Organic TeaWhen approached with the prompt of redesigning a trending food
product I chose Numi, a RTD tea that I saw potential in. After
choosing the product I began looking into the market of RTD teas and
the demographic that would most likely consume it which lead into
my research on the millennial consumer. Two factors of packaging
that drove my designs were the millenial's liklihood of picking up
simply designed packaging and their yearning to support products that
do something more for the world. Within my packaging I updated the
bottle design and added a four pack of aluminum cans. These cans are
more environmentally conscious compared to the bottles and are
easier to recycle.
