Greetings from the PrincipalWe can scarcely believe that we are coming to the end

of another school year and what a year it has been with such success and achievement in everything we did. As All Island School Choir winners, we are exceedingly proud and believe that this achievement is but one of our many achievements in our work of teaching and learning here at the school. It is indeed a privilege to witness at first hand so much achievement, in so many diverse ways, in our daily work

Life here is hectic with so many events and activities happening on a daily basis and such a tremendous spirit of goodwill and co-operation which makes it all possible. Such activities and events all support the teaching and learning and contribute to the overall development of our students.

You will get a wee flavour of life at Presentation in our newsletter but its scope limits its ability to convey the excitement and enthusiasm which are tangible on

so many occasions.

Our Junior and Leaving Certificate students are working very hard and deserve to do very well in their exams and we all wish them the very best of good luck.

I would like to convey our gratitude to our parents who support us and work with us to ensure each student achieves. To the

parents who help out with sports and games, to those who are involved in a very active parents council and to all who

help in any way we say a sincere thanks. We are indebted to you for your ongoing support and work for the benefit of all our

students.

In the spirit of our foundress, Nano Nagle, we believe that our young people deserve the very best of educational opportunities and

we constantly strive to bring about improvement in all we do and in our facilities and equipment.

We wish you all a happy holiday and thank you for your support over the past year.

Sincerely,

Sr. Sheila Kelleher

A Choir Fit for a Queen!Winning the All Island School Choir Competition 2010On November 14th, our school choir

went to The Waterfront Hall in Belfast for

the final of the All Island School Choir

Competition. They performed two songs

Chill Chais and The Boogie Woogie Bugle

Boy. After many gruelling rehearsals to

perfect their pieces and a great deal of

work by both the choir and their conductor,

Ms. Anne Dunphy, they left Belfast as the

winners of the 2010 All Island School

Choir Competition.

Performing on the Late Late ShowFollowing the success of winning the All Island School Choir Competition, the choir was invited

to perform on the Late Late Show’s Christmas Eve Special. They performed the well known

classic The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire). It was a great honour and the

girls enjoyed the experience immensely!

The Canadian Maths CompetitionThe Canadian Maths Competition is an exam which tests the mathematical ability of students. Fourth Year students took part in the exam and congratulations to Meghan McDowell for winning a gold medal.

Young ScientistsÁine McPhillips, Cindy Chen and Tara Cregan, three Fourth Year students, were Highly Commended in the Young Scientist Competition. The competition was held in the RDS in Dublin on 12th-14th of January 2011. “It was a wonderful experience and the hard work we did paid off in the end” said Cindy Chen.

Sci Fest Three fourth year students Áine McPhillips, Cindy Chen and Tara Cregan came 2nd in a Science Competition named Sci Fest. It was held in C.I.T on the 8th of April 2011. Well done girls!

Lego Competition A group of Second Year students entered The Lego Competition which was held in C.I.T on February 17th, 2011. The competition was based on building robots and creating posters.

The Graphic Novel ProjectFollowing the success of Alison O’Donovan’s storyboard in last year’s Graphic Novel, Syzagey, Pamela Murphy and Lorraine Dee were chosen by John Sexton to be a part of this year’s Graphic Novel entitled Interstice. The two girls were two of the six writers chosen to participate. The girls attended Cork City Library once a week for three weeks where they created their stories for the graphic novel. Here they also learned new story writing tips from John. Interstice was launched during Easter and was a huge success. It was a great achievement for both girls.

Fourth Annual Short Story CompetitionEva Wallace took time out from studying for her Junior Certificate to write a short story entitled The Three Bears. She based it on three very industrious (and debt-ridden) bears who succumb to the temptation of easy loans and building straw houses. She came 2nd in the Cork City Libraries’ Short Story Competition, beating off competition

from over 250 other entries.

Spider Web AwardsFourth Year Students entered the Young Spider Awards. This competition included designing their website and publishing it. Well done to Hayley O’Regan and Kelly Collins for achieving third place.

Junior AchievementAs part of Fourth Year 2010/2011, students took part in the Junior Achievement course Learn to Earn run by Bank of Ireland on Patrick Street. Fiona Tatten was the representative for the bank and came to our school for a five week programme. Each week students learned about a different topic relating to money. Students learned about topics ranging from budgeting, to applying for a loan and saving through games.

Build a Bank ChallengeOn Tuesday 8th March 2011 our bank team; Sarah Fitzpatrick (Manager), Aine Mullane (Assistant Manager), Emer O’Sullivan (Auditor), Cindy Chen (Sales and Marketing), Louise Hill and Jade Coleman (Tellers), participated in The Build a Bank Challenge Competition which was held in Rochestown Park Hotel. They were competing against twenty other schools from the Munster region. Everyone in the group had a chance to speak about their presentation, their ideas and what they did during the year in order to attract more customers. The bank is opened every Monday and provides banking

services such as lodging money. Their teacher, Mrs Josephine Ahern (pictured) also attended.

Our School’s Credit UnionEvery Friday afternoon Fourth Year students Pamela Murphy, Tricia Collins, Shauna O’Byrne, Niamh Lowther, Aine Mc Philips and Rebecca Kenny, participated in the school credit union. With the help of Mary from Ballyphehane Credit Union the girls got the chance to learn many banking skills. It was a great experience and overall the girls really enjoyed it and found it highly beneficial.

MABS - Money, Advice and Budgeting ServiceDuring the year, Fourth year students participated in a programme called MABS. This is a learners’ journal for business that shows you and gives you advice on how to manage your money. MABS stands for Money, Advice and Budgeting Service. The journal helped students to manage their money and gave some useful tips on budgeting and saving. All students were awarded with a certificate when they completed the programme.

They sang the show’s famous numbers including

Good Morning Baltimore, The Nicest Kids in Town,

Welcome to the 60’s and You Can’t Stop the Beat.

The show was directed by Mrs. Mahon Buckley

and it was a great success. We would like to thank

FASHION SHOWFourth Year students organised a fashion show in aid of Marymount Hospice

which raised over €2,000. Our Fashion Show began with the Funky Couture

outfits. This was followed up by a make-up demonstration given by Deirdre from

Beauty Corner. There were three models showing day make-up, night make-up

and artistic designs.

Sandra from Spacers Hair Salon demonstrated eight various styles on our hair

models. Half time entertainment was provided by the students. This included

a dance performance choreographed by Carina Dee and a raffle with great prizes

up for grabs. The raffle raised €181 for Lisa’s Wish a charity raising awareness of

colon cancer. The dance performance was fantastic and extremely energetic.

The second half of the show started with students modelling clothes from

Pennys, followed by clothes from New Look, California and evening wear from

Fran and Jane. Six teachers, including our principal Sr Sheila modelled clothes

from Diffusion in Glanmire.

students. They have as many as sixty students in a

class! The Global Education Enterprise, set up by

The Presentation Sisters, is an initiative to bring Irish

schools closer to their sister schools in India and

Zambia.

Barrack Street Band in SavannahOn the 11th March The Cork Barrack Street Band

travelled to Savannah, Georgia. They were the

Grand Marshalls of the second biggest St. Patrick’s

Day parade in the world. Their week included live

performances for the WTOC TV station in Savannah

and also several different Ceremonies such as the

Celtic Cross Ceremony. The band was also a part of

several different concerts and marches throughout

Savannah. The Band had been fundraising for this

trip for two years. During the duration of the trip

the band frequently updated the evening echo with

pictures of the band performing and also 96fm with

recordings of the band’s performances. The trip was a

huge success and will most definitely go down in band

history. Congratulations to Pamela Murphy who is a

member of the Barrack Street Band and was a part of

this memorable trip.

This year marks the retirement of four of our remarkable teachers who showed great

dedication and commitment to the school. Mrs Josephine Ahern, Mr Dave Cashman, Mrs Helen Buckley and Mrs Lelia O’ Sullivan will be deeply missed as they brought a great sense of encouragement to everyone. They were always there to support the students and offer as much help as they could. We thank them for all their hard work and wish them the best of luck in the future!

Two of our retiring teachers reflect back on their time in the school and their plans for the future.

Mrs Ahern:‘I have been working in the school for 38 years and after these 38 years I realised that the early mornings, the company of the staff and the humour of the students are the things I like the most about the school. I’ll miss these things and even the school itself. One thing I won’t miss is having to get through last class on a Friday evening when I am tired from a hard weeks work. I feel sad about leaving, but there comes a point in life when you have to move on. I am looking forward to relaxing, doing a bit of gardening and maybe some travel.’

Mrs Buckley:‘After working in the school over 30 years the highlight of my teaching career has been my involvement in establishing the 4th year programme. I am happy and proud to be associated with the many education and development opportunities it offers our students. I very much liked working with the pupils in the school and Sr. Sheila who is an inspirational leader who leads a wonderful team spirit among staff and pupils. I will miss the routine of the classroom and its ‘buzz’ generated by a hard-working class, but I know for certain I will not miss the bell going off every forty minutes. I feel more than a little bit sad that I am leaving but I am really looking forward to having the time to pursue other interests, to relax and read a good few novels.’

Sr. Sheila honoured for 25 years at Presentation SchoolOur most recent awards night had a twist as a special accolade was presented at the end of the ceremony to Sr. Sheila Kelleher who was honoured with an award to mark her 25th anniversary as principal of the school. She said: ‘I couldn’t believe it when they presented me with the magnificent engraved crystal plate. I was so surprised. I hadn’t even realised that I have been in the school for that length of time.’ It was extremely important to both the staff and students of the school that the milestone in Sr. Sheila’s professional career was marked.

On October 19th we gathered in the hall for a short

prayer service before having a small change collection.

Everybody brought in loose change and the school raised

a total of €567.

Fourth Year students collected €486 for The Simon

Community with the help of Mr Cashman.

In October our Fifth Years baked scones for a staff coffee

morning in aid of Marymount Hospice. A total of €243

was collected in the school.

Last December LCA2 collected non-perishable goods

for Saint Vincent De Paul to help the families suffering

during these difficult economic times.

Our Fourth Year and Fifth Year students took part in

fundraising for SHARE over Christmas.

On International Women’s Day (March 8th) 1C held

a Cake Sale which raised €200 for the Irish Cancer

Society.

On the 16th March our school had a no-uniform day.

Each student brought in €3 which was donated to

Marymount Hospice.

Fourth Years held a raffle which raised €181 for Lisa’s

Wish (an ovarian cancer charity).

Seachtain na GaeilgeA cultural and educational Seachtain ne Gaeilge was

organised by Fourth Year students. Highlights of the

week included a chéilí, the seanchaí Pat Speight and

many other events, including games such as Twister.

Sports NewsGaelic FootballAfter just one year in existence, the team kicked up

a stir this season and proved that lack of experience

did not prevent them from progressing. The squad

of almost thirty players saw themselves win an

astonishing five-in-a-row, leading them to qualify

for the Munster Plate Semi-Final. In the tough and

thrilling match the squad won a ticket to the final.

In this match they were hit hard by the Tipperary

side St. Anne’s. The team spirit they displayed did

not fail there, leaving the field the team called out

‘there’s always next year’. They did their coach

Denise Walsh proud and we would like to thank her

and Mr. O’ Shea for the immense support throughout

the year.

AthleticsOn the 10th and 12th of May 2011, 4 of our students

Katie Lucey, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Emma O’ Byrne and

Stephanie Morgan competed in the South Munster

School Athletics Competition. They took part in the

800m, 300m, 100m, relay race and the long jump.

Stephanie Morgan was awarded with 5th place. The

relay team came in 4th and Katie Lucey took 2nd

place in the long jump. Well done girls.

CamogieThe camogie team is a strong side that runs under

the supervision of Sandra Hurley. Although the

team didn’t win the league they played their best

and hope to build on the foundations they laid this

year and progress to better things next year.

SoccerDespite low numbers, the committed soccer players

trained faithfully every Friday after school under the

guidance of Ms. O’ Shea. The team is not one of

specific age as girls from 1st through to 6th year play

on it. This fact encourages good relations between

junior and senior students and helps to remove the

scare factor for girls who seek the help of the senior

students. We feel that a soccer team is yet another

valuable asset in the school and would like to see

greater numbers turning out next year. Thank you

for all your help and encouragement, Ms. O’ Shea.

First Year Basketball

The first year basketball team played in the league

final against their rivals Christ King on the 30th

of March in Neptune stadium. The opening score

was from Danielle Lawton and then it was basket

for basket until Chloe O’ Shea scored a three

pointer late in the 4th quarter. Caroline O’ Mahony

challenged the boards at both baskets and there

was also great rebounding from Emma Fitzgerald.

We could see from the team’s performance that

they had improved greatly with every match. They

displayed superb work on the day and they were

very unlucky to lose by a mere three points but it

was a fantastic experience. We would like to thank

all the fourth years and parents for supporting

the team on the day of the final. We would also

like to thank Ms. Walsh, Ms. Daly and Mrs. Patsy

Folkes especially for giving up their free time and

encouraging the girls every step of the way. Well

done to all of the girls

Boxing Student Meets Katie Taylor Aisling Greene of this year’s L.C.A class has been

boxing for the past 9 months. She has won six of

her fights and is current Cork County Champion

in the 57kg. Weight division Aisling was thrilled

when she met world champion, Katie Taylor at the

St. Johns Tournament in Youghal.

Sports DayThe 1st, 2nd and 3rd years had their sports day

in the school. They ran a variety of races like

the three legged race, the wheel-barrow race,

relays, egg and spoon race, the sack race and

sprints. Even the teachers took part. It was a lot

of fun! The 4th years went to the Kinsale Outdoor

Educational Centre. While there they took part in

many activities such as canoeing, abseiling, going

on the zip wire and archery. It was a fantastic

experience and a great day! The 5th years went

cycling in Killarney for their sports day and the

6th years went paintballing. Both years had a

tremendous day!

A Final Word from our Head Girl 2010 Kadie LinehanI can’t but say that my last year at Presentation Secondary School has

been memorable. This was due in part to the fact that I was Head Girl.

I enjoyed my role as Head Girl from the poster campaigns during the

elections to listening to students’ issues and suggestions at the Student

Council Meetings. I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet Senator

David Norris and to be a part of the winning All Island Schools choir. It

was also interesting to get to know the staff and my fellow pupils a little

better. While it is sad to leave Presentation, Ballyphehane I am looking

forward, as are my fellow students, to the future. On that note, a sincere

thank you to Sr. Sheila, teachers and staff for encouraging and inspiring

us throughout our school years.
