LEPAROUX AND GEROUX, DEUX FOR THE SHOWBy Alicia Wincze-Hughest @BH_AHughes

The similarities are such that when one is mentioned, it is

only a matter of time before the other is brought into the same context.

They are countrymen for starters. They share a profession, an attitude, a bond. On top of that they have become co-leading pilots for one of Thoroughbred racing's most prolific barns. It has never been easier to put jockeys Julien Leparoux and Florent Geroux in the same breath.

In the literal sense, they are not a team. Not in a sport where livelihoods hinge on split-second judgment calls, revered and reviled from one race to the next. Yet when asked about intangibles behind their successes of the past year, the answer from each had a distinct commonality.

"I feel like it's a team," Leparoux said of his association with Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

"The bottom line is, we are working together," Geroux echoed.

The 2016 season ended packed with milestones for Geroux and Leparoux, the former notching career highs in single-season earnings ($17,684,133), wins (217), and graded stakes victories (30), and his comrade posting his best earnings ($13,902,269) since his 2009 Eclipse Award-winning campaign.

In 2016 Geroux and Leparoux emerged as go-to riders for the

Casse barn, with Geroux the regular rider of 2015 Canadian Horse of the Year Catch a Glimpse and Leparoux the constant companion of champion turf female Tepin and Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) hero Classic Empire.

The dynamic between the two Frenchmen and the Casse Racing crew boasts a unique nexus in an environment often rooted in the unforgiving. In their quest to better themselves and their mounts as well as reward clients, Geroux and Leparoux have not only the added edge of knowing they have each

other's backs, but the peace of mind that comes with being part of a squad in a notoriously fickle profession.

"With Mark and Julien and (assistant trainer) Norm (Casse) and the rest of the staff, it's been like a team effort," said Geroux. "We are based pretty much for most of the year in the same place... and Julien and myself, we're able to work the horses pretty much all the time that they need us, especially the good horses.

Robert Masterson's champion Tepin has been a key mount for Julien Leparoux

"And Mark, he is always positive, even after a loss. He's like, 'We win together and we lose together,' that is the goal."

While 33-year-old Leparoux has ridden for Casse on and off since 2007, his fortuitous pairing with Tepin at the start of 2015 served as impetus for the two-time Eclipse Award winner to make 244 starts for the barn the past two seasons, becoming first-call jockey for an outfit stamping itself as a national stalwart.

Since Leparoux's 2005 arrival in North America as a rider for trainer Patrick Biancone, his statistical history suggests a charmed career. In 2006 he booted home 403 winners to lead the nation and earn the Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice jockey. The "worst" year he had came in 2014 when he bankrolled more than $7.6 million—the only time aside from his debut season his earnings finished below $10 million.

"With the Casse barn, I feel like I have back-up," said Leparoux. "Even if sometimes I ride a bad race, they're not going to be all 'We're going to take you off.' Mark is more like 'You rode a bad race. Next time you try and do better.'"

The working chemistry between Casse and Leparoux has been second only to the jockey's magnetism with the barn's mounts. Of the 37 graded stakes wins Leparoux has notched the past two years, 17 came aboard Casse runners.

Nine years ago, a fellow Frenchman Leparoux met briefly in their native country rode his first race in North America and also began working with Biancone. A friendship formed to the point where Leparoux told his agent Steve Bass, "If we can help Florent, we should always try to help him."

It was a sporting offer, one Leparoux says hindsight has rendered unnecessary.

"I was always there if he needed something... but he did most of it on his own," Leparoux said.

For someone conversing in a second language, it is

fascinating to observe how easily Geroux can go on at length dissecting the intricacies of his mounts.

"I've probably had more conversations and talked to Florent longer than any rider we've had ride for us," said David Fiske, manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds, which owns the Geroux-piloted grade 1 winner Gun Runner, who is trained by Steve Asmussen.

Communication skills and take-notice talent have been hitting horsemen over the head the last few seasons. Despite winning his first Breeders' Cup race aboard eventual champion male sprinter Work All Week in 2014, 30-year-old Geroux's book didn't get the bump one would expect in the aftermath. He responded by showing them all again in 2015 when he cracked the $10 million mark in earnings for the first time and notched two more Breeders' Cup triumphs, including the first victory in the World Championships for Casse with Catch a Glimpse in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T).

Geroux fits right in with Casse's method of teaching young horses lessons while instilling confidence.

"My standard thing with a first-time starter is I'd rather be a closing fourth than a dying third," Casse said. "I want them to be able to run by horses and both (Geroux and Leparoux) are very good at that."

Among many pieces of good fortune Geroux and Leparoux have enjoyed of late is being part of an environment where such thinking is the norm. They agree they are—and will continue to be—better off for it.

"Now when we work horses for Mark, I know how (Julien's) going to do and he knows how I'm going to do, and we don't even need to talk to each other," Geroux said.

Added Leparoux: "We've been friends for a long time, so it's good to see him do good, and now that he's in Kentucky, we can share stuff."

SALES UPDATE

DIXIE VICTORY TOPS KEENELAND JANUARY DAY 4By Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Dr. E.C. "Pug" Hart and Susie Hart came to the Keeneland

January horses of all ages sale looking for a replacement for their late mare Miz United States, and left with Dixie Victory, who topped the penultimate session Jan. 12 at $100,000.

Bought by the Harts under the name of Willow Wood, the winning 6-year-old daughter of Dixie Union was consigned as a broodmare prospect as Hip 1457 by Shawhan Place.

"She's a beautiful mare," Susie Hart said, noting she paid more than she expected. "She was the right physical, had the right look, had a live pedigree, and is a half sister to a current graded horse. I wanted to buy her for $50,000, but all the smart guys are here. Any time a really good one comes in, you can't hide them."

A multiple stakes-winning daughter of United Appeal, Miz United States produced multiple stakes winner Exaggerated and multiple stakes-placed runners Ameribelle and Scampering for the Harts.

"I loved her. She was a great mare," Hart said. "I was looking for a replacement for her, so hopefully this mare will be with us for a good long time."

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Dixie Victory was produced from the grade I-winning Artax mare Friendly Michelle and is a half sister to stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Bonita Bianca.

Shawhan Place's Matt Koch

said the mare's price went well beyond the consignor's expectations.

"We were surprised," Koch said. "We knew she was going to do well. She was popular at the barn and very well received. You are always excited when one goes beyond your expectations. Obviously we were extremely happy."

Koch said the market during the Thursday session was either

a session in which gross, average, and median prices trended downward and the buyback rate rose.

Keeneland reported 209 head grossed $2,489,600 for an average price of $11,912, down 22.3% and 7.8%, respectively, from the $12,919 average for 248 horses during the same day a year ago. The session median of $5,000 was 31% off the $7,250 figure in 2016. The 67 horses bought back represented 24.2% of the total through the ring, compared with a 15.3% RNA rate last year.

Going into the sale's fifth and final session, the average is trending down 12.9% at $34,784 ($39,944 in 2016), as 790 horses have grossed $27,479,100, compared with the $33,672,900 total for 843 at the same point in 2016.

Through Day 4, the 398 horses that were withdrawn represented 25.6% of the 1,549 cataloged, with 361 horses bought back, for an RNA rate of 31.4% of those through the ring. At the same point a year ago, the RNA rate was 24%.

The day's second-highest price and top for a short yearling was the $67,000 bid of Robertson Q. H. for Hip 1515, a filly from the first crop of Goldencents. Consigned by Susan Forrester, the filly foaled Feb. 13, 2016, is from the family of multiple grade 3 winner Halo's Image.

The January sale concludes Jan. 13, with a start time of 10 a.m. BH

VALE DORI CHASES SECOND GRADE 2By Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum's Vale Dori chases her second straight grade 2 victory

Jan. 14 in the $200,000 La Canada Stakes at Santa Ani-ta Park, and she'll encounter familiar challengers.

Three entered in the 1 1/16-mile La Canada ran behind her in the Dec. 3 Bayakoa Handicap (G2) at Del Mar.

In the Bayakoa, Vale Dori raced just off pacesetter Gloryzapper, took command in the final turn under first-time jockey Mike Smith, and pulled away under a hand ride to win by three lengths. Since moving to trainer Bob Baffert in 2016, the Argentine-bred has three wins, a neck second to Gloryzapper in her U.S. debut, and a third behind champions Stellar Wind and Beholder in the Zenyatta Stakes (G1).

Wild At Heart loomed as a potential threat turning for home in the Bayakoa, but never got within a length of the winning daughter of Asiatic Boy. Ramona Bass' 5-year-old Indian Charlie mare, has placed in all three graded dirt tries for Richard Mandella. Along with her second-place Bayakoa run, she was just a half-length second in the L.A. Woman Stakes (G3) and came in third behind eventual champion Stellar Wind in the 2015 Santa Anita Oaks (G1).

Also returning from the Bayakoa is Show Stealer (fourth), along with Autumn Flower (sixth). The lone outsider in the short field is former claimer Enduring Erin. BH

WARRIOR'S CLUB HEADS SMARTY JONESBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

The route through Arkansas to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) begins Jan.

16 in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

The one-mile race, which offers 17 Road to the Kentucky Derby points, kicks off a series of four Derby preps at Oaklawn. Of eight entered, Warrior's Club is the lone stakes winner. Churchill Downs Racing Club's Warrior's Reward colt broke his maiden for trainer D. Wayne Lukas Oct. 30 in Churchill Downs' Spendthrift Stallion Stakes, then followed with a third in the Nov. 26 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2), behind McCraken and Wild Shot.

Two other Smarty Jones entrants also ran in the Kentucky Jockey Club, including fourth-place finisher Uncontested, who set the pace and was just headed for third.

Romeo O Romeo was also involved early in the Kentucky Jockey Club, but tired to 12th. That was the Macho Uno runner's only poor start. He placed for trainer Brian Williamson in three stakes following an Arlington International Racecourse maiden score.

Rounding out the field are stakes-placed runners Petrov, Cu Rahy, and Rowdy the Warrior, along with maiden winners Unbridled Eagle and Love That Lute. Petrov, a Ron Moquett-trained Flatter colt, has done little wrong. He won his debut in November by 3 1/4 lengths at Churchill, then was a head second to Even Thunder in the Dec. 2 King's Swan at Aqueduct Racetrack. BH

TOMMY MACHO BACK IN FLORIDA FOR HAL'S HOPEBy BloodHorse Staff

Already a graded stakes winner when he arrived in South Florida last winter, Paul Pompa Jr. and J

Stables' Tommy Macho put forth a career-best effort to beat a solid cast in the Fred W. Hooper (G3) 11 months ago at Gulfstream Park.

Just as he was coming into top form, the bay son of Macho Uno emerged from that race with a knee chip that required surgery, keeping him away from the races for eight months. Following a pair of off-the-board finishes to end 2016, Tommy Macho returns to Gulfstream for his 5-year-old debut in the $150,000 Hal's Hope (G3) Jan. 14.

"Honestly, his last couple of races have been a little bit disappointing, but he seemed to really like Gulfstream last year, so we're hoping to get him back on track," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "His race here last year was ultra impressive. We know he's got it in him. We just need to get him back in top form. I think he was a little rusty off the layoff. He's training with enthusiasm now, so hopefully he runs like it."

Tommy Macho made his return in the one-mile Kelso (G2) Oct. 8 at Belmont Park, where he tired to finish last of five after a wide trip. He capped the year finishing fourth in the 1 1/8-mile Richard W. Small Stakes Nov. 19 at Laurel Park.

"The Kelso was maybe a bit too much to ask first time off the bench and then we stretched him out to a mile and an eighth at Laurel, and I don't think he loved the surface there that day and he got a little late the last part of it," Pletcher said. "Hopefully, with those two races under his belt, he's ready to fire his best shot."

Among the horses looking for their first stakes win in the Hal's Hope is Marylou Whitney's Bird Song, the front-running winner of a one-mile, second-level optional claiming allowance Nov. 24 at Churchill Downs to cap his 3-year-old season.

It was the third win in the past five starts for the gray or roan son of Unbridled's Song, who broke his maiden and won an entry-level allowance, both at six furlongs, in back-to-back efforts last summer. He finished eighth for trainer Ian Wilkes in the Ketel One King's Bishop (G1) at Saratoga Race Course in his stakes debut after racing near the back of the pack in the seven-furlong sprint.

"He won and then won again, so he put us in a position where you're looking at stakes races, but he wasn't quite seasoned enough for it. And I (had) him (ridden) wrong that day," said Wilkes. "I should have let him run a little more. I made the decision, but first time in a stake, I should have let him just run a little more and I didn't."

Bird Song tuned up for the Hal's Hope with a five-furlong breeze in :59.35 Jan. 5 at Palm Meadows. It was the fastest of eight works at the distance.

"The horse is doing good. I was very pleased with the work," Wilkes said. "We came back and got him back on track, and I feel like now he's taken off. I don't see a reason to keep him in the barn." BH

OVERSIGHT PANEL APPROVES NYRA SPENDINGBy Tom Precious

A New York state oversight panel has approved major spending plans for 2017 by the New York

Racing Association, though not before an annual disa-greement surfaced about whether NYRA runs a surplus or deficit from its racing operations.

NYRA, with a board controlled since 2012 by appointees of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, projected $2.1 million operating income from racing operations, compared with $2.3 million in 2016. The numbers were presented this week to the state's Franchise Oversight Board.

Steve Newman, a member of the oversight panel, said NYRA is again leaving out some expenses in its calculations. He estimated the surplus claimed by NYRA is really an $8 million deficit.

"I'm not going to argue with you, sir,'' NYRA president Christopher Kay said to Newman. Kay promised to set up a separate meeting with Newman and others, including NYRA's accountants, to try to resolve the annual dispute.

The oversight board's powers are limited to just reviewing and commenting on NYRA's annual operating budget. But it has approval or rejection powers over its annual capital budget.

The board this week approved NYRA's proposed spending of $27.5 million on new capital expenditures, as well as $8.3 million in carryover funding from 2016 that can be spent this year.

The varied capital program includes a new training track safety rail at Belmont Park, a new track cushion at Belmont, and design work on a proposed three-story, At the Rail facility near the clubhouse at Saratoga Race Course—an idea that still needs final state approval.

NYRA also is planning to construct a new pony barn at Belmont, replace fire suppression systems in barns, and to renovate four dormitories at Saratoga. Also at Saratoga, NYRA is looking to create "junior boxes" to be located at the east end of the grandstand that Kay believes will be "conducive to attracting a younger audience." The boxes would be suites with chairs and sofas able to accommodate eight people, Kay said, with a food and beverage area located nearby.

A NYRA plan also was approved to replace an existing patio canvas roof at Saratoga with cooper, which caught the attention of one oversight panel member. Kay said NYRA wants to use copper for the "historic issues" associated with the racetrack. The capital plan also includes everything from standardizing type fonts and colors on signs scattered around the tracks and $100,000 on new tables and chairs for the club terrace and porch at Saratoga.

The 2017 NYRA operating budget projects small declines in gross revenues from on-track, export signal, and OTB wagering. Its net revenue from racing operations is projected to decline 1.6% to $159.8 million in 2017. Total operating expenses is projected at $157.7 million. Total race days at all three tracks is projected at 226 dates in 2017, down four dates from 2016 and 14 dates from the most recent five-year average.

Total handle is projected to drop, again, by 2% from 2016 to $2.5 billion. NYRA officials say that comes from budgeting conservatively, a lower handle from OTB operators in New York. and "strategic changes" to reduce race dates to maintain field sizes during the winter meet at Aqueduct and fall meet at Belmont.

Revenue sharing payments distributed from the Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct will decline 3.3% in 2017 to $118 million from 2016. That will reduce casino revenue sharing payments for purses by $2.1 million to $61 million. BH

EL AREEB TRAINING WELL FOR NEXT STARTBy BloodHorse Staff

M M G Stables' sophomore sensation El Areeb con-

tinues to train forwardly at his Laurel Park base after stamping himself a legitimate 3-year-old prospect with an 11 1/4-length romp in the Jerome Stakes (G3) Jan. 2 at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Trainer Cathal Lynch said El Areeb will return to the work tab Jan. 13 or 14, the first time since the race. Lynch's son and assistant, Charlie, will be in the irons.

"He's going to work Friday or Saturday morning. We're just watching the weather. If it's going to be bad Friday night then we'll work in the morning and if not, we'll try on Saturday. He'll go an easy two-minute lick and then finish up with a little half-mile," Lynch said. "He's doing great. We're delighted with him. Fingers crossed, it's all good."

In his graded stakes debut, the mile and 70-yard Jerome was the third consecutive victory for the gray or roan Exchange Rate colt.

"He had been working really well and we expected him to run well. He definitely exceeded expectations, but we weren't shocked," Lynch said. "We were shocked that he won by that far, don't get me wrong, but not shocked that he ran so well."

Lynch said El Areeb would continue to point to Aqueduct's series of stakes for 3-year-olds starting with the Withers Stakes (G3)

at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 4. The Gotham Stakes (G3), also at 1 1/16 miles, is March 4 and the 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial (G2) is set for April 8.

"We wouldn't do all three, but we might do two out of the three. It depends on how he comes back," he said. "The Withers we'll probably do next because there's Derby points, but I have to speak with the owners. I spoke to them the other day and we're going back and forth but it looks like the Withers is next if everything is right, as long as the weather stays good and he keeps training well."

Out of the A.P. Indy mare Feathered Diamond, El Areeb was purchased for $340,000 as a 2-year-old in training last March. He went to the sidelines after running fourth in his June debut at Parx Racing, returning to run second in a maiden event

Sept. 30 at Laurel where he broke his maiden by 8 3/4 lengths Oct. 15.

"He's one that's impressed us since we got him in March. He was one of the first 2-year-olds that we ran when he bucked shins at Parx. He ran a little disappointing that day but he had a legitimate excuse," Lynch said. "The owners are very patient so we took our time and brought him back.

"He had kind of a rough trip (in his second start). It was supposed to be on the turf that day and he drew way outside and had a very, very wide trip but ran on very well and finished second," he added. "From that race to the next two, he just kind of put everything together. We're in awe of him most days. He's just a lovely horse."

El Areeb, which means 'helpful' or 'skillful' in Arabic, won the Nov. 19 James F. Lewis III Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths in front-running fashion similar to his maiden triumph. The Jerome was his first try around two turns.

"It's very exciting. It's the reason we get up at 4 o'clock in the morning to go to work. These are the kinds of horses you want to train and these are the ones you look for. I feel very blessed and very lucky and thank God every day for him," Lynch said. "They all have to stay together, stay sound and you have to get lucky. You have to absolutely get lucky. He's as special a horse as I've trained in 22 years."

Among his other promising 3-year-olds, Lynch said both Undulated, also owned by M M G, and Two Charley's emerged well from the seven-furlong Marylander Dec. 31 at Laurel where they ran third and fourth, respectively, behind favorite Irish War Cry.

The Marylander was the dirt debut for Undulated, who broke his maiden and ran second in the Laurel Futurity on turf and won the Swynford Stakes over the all-weather surface Nov. 27 at Woodbine. Charles Biggs' Two Charley's ran second to El Areeb in the Lewis.

"Undulated we're going to give a little vacation and he'll probably come back in the spring and summer. We thought he was turf and Poly and we just gave him a shot," Lynch said. "We ran him at home and figured we'd try him on the dirt and make sure we were right and we were right, unfortunately. We just think he's a better turf horse. He ran third in the stake; it's not like he did terrible. By his standards we're looking for him to be a nice stake horse and we're looking forward to a good 3-year-old year with him.

"Two Charley's, he's still got his a-other-than condition and there's a couple other stakes here going forward," he added. "I don't think he'll run into Irish War Cry too often. Those kinds of horses are very useful and we're looking forward to a good 3-year-old year with a bunch of these guys." BH

REYNALDOTHEWIZARD AGAIN WINS DUBAWI STAKESBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

Reynaldothewizard might be an 11-year-old (by some calcula-

tions that's 37.5 human years), but he doesn't know it and his races sure don't show it.

In Dubai Jan. 12, Zabeel Racing International's venerable son of Speightstown won the listed Dubawi Stakes Sponsored By DP World over six furlongs of Meydan's dirt surface for the third consecutive year.

Although Reynaldothewizard was making his first start since finishing fourth to Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Muarrab in the 2016 Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored by Gulf News (G1) on Dubai World Cup day in March, trainer Satish Seemar had his charge prepared.

Facing six younger upstarts, the old boy broke from post six under jockey Richard Mullen and settled mid pack while Golden Shaheen nemesis Muarrab (Oasis Dream) and Desert Force (Equiano) set the pace. Muarrab increased his advantage as the field swept through the turn. As Desert Force faded, Reynaldothewizard worked his magic. Collected and confident with the self-assurance nine years of racing experience brings, the bay gelding narrowed Muarrab's advantage stride by stride, passing him near the wire to win by a half-length in 1:10.66 on a fast track.

Muarrab finished second with Florida-bred Wild Dude (Wildcat

Heir), winner of the 2015 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) and Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G1), third 4 1/4 lengths behind.

In the 2015 Dubawi Stakes, Reynaldothewizard defeated Muarrab and in 2016 bettered Cool Cowboy to earn his photo op in the winner's circle. In 2015 he also took the Al Shindagha Sprint (G3).

Bred in Kentucky by Gibraltar Group, Reynaldothewizard sold for $400,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale to Hartley/De Renzo who pinhooked him at the Fasig-Tipton February 2-year-old sale where Omar Trevino purchased him for $775,000.

For Zabeel Racing and trainer Eoin Harty, Reynaldothewizard won once from six starts in the United States at 2 and 3, showing some promise with a second in the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2). Since being sent to Dubai at 4, he has carved out a record 10 wins in 21 starts with earnings of more than $2 million. In 2013 he won the Dubai

Golden Shaheen (G1) to culminate his perfect three-for-three season.

Reynaldothewizard's dam, Holiday Runner (Meadowlake) won the Three Chimneys Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs and the Fashion Stakes at Belmont Park in a 14-race career that spanned three seasons in which she earned $232,073. She has produced one other stakes winner, multiple grade 1 winner Seventh Street (Street Cry), who was a $1 million 2-year-old purchase by John Ferguson for Godolphin.

The versatile Speightstown, a son of Gone West, seems a stallion for all seasons and all surfaces and all distances. His 79 stakes winners represent 9% of his foals of racing age. His 14 grade/group 1 winners include Haynesfield (10 furlongs dirt), Tamarkuz (eight furlongs dirt) and Mona de Momma (seven furlongs dirt) to Lord Shankill (eight furlongs turf), Seek Again, and Force the Pass (10 furlongs turf). KITASAN BLACK NAMED JAPAN'S HORSE OF THE YEARBy Naohiro Goda

Kitasan Black, winner of the Tenno Sho Spring (G1) in May and the Japan Cup (G1) in November, was

named Japanese Horse of the Year during the 2016 Japan Racing Association Awards, announced Jan. 10.

The race for glory of that high title was a three-way competition between Kitasan Black, 2015 Horse of the Year Maurice, and 3-year-old Satono Diamond. Kitasan Black received 46% of the votes (134), while Maurice and Satono Diamond received 90 votes and 66 votes, respectively.

Maurice collected three grade 1 stakes in 2016, including the Champions Mile (G1) and Hong Kong Cup (G1), both at Sha Tin, which is one more than his competitors. Maurice only won a single grade 1 stakes in Japan, the Tenno Sho Autumn, which the voters seemed to view as not good enough to be Horse of the Year "in Japan."

The voters may have set a high value on Kitasan

INTERVIEW

SEAN FELD TALKS ABOUT CLIMAX STALLIONSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Last fall the family team of bloodstock agent Bob Feld, his son Sean Feld, and trainer Mark Feld,

put a name to a concept they had been testing since Bullet Train—half brother to European champi-on Frankel—retired to stud in 2013. Climax Stallions is the Felds' new stallion syndication venture that is modeled more similarly to racehorse syndications. BloodHorse MarketWatch editor Eric Mitchell talked with Sean Feld about the new company, which is now recruiting investors for its most recent acquisi-tion, grade 1 winner Haynesfield.

BloodHorse MarketWatch: Where did the idea for Climax Stallions originate?

Sean Feld: Bullet Train was our guinea pig. We were looking for a way to attract non-horse people, so we got a lot of professional business types who watched horse racing and gambled on the weekends but had never owned a horse. That went pretty well so my uncle Mark saw this opportunity to get people involved in the game on the stallion side instead of through pinhooking or buying a small piece of a racehorse.

BH: How does your stallion syndication differ from more traditional stallion syndications?

SF: The minimum buy-in is 10%, and you don't get any breeding rights, which fits with our target audience that doesn't own mares. You just own a 10% equity in the stallion. Our goal is to use stallions that can stand on their own merit and don't need a lot of inside support. There is power in numbers, but we feel if you can find the right stallion for the right price, then we'll get enough mares regardless of who owns him. Investors are responsible for 10% of the expenses and entitled to 10% of the profits.

We are selling the dream that Haynesfield or Curlin to Mischief could be a good cash generator if they hit. Your initial costs are less and your risk is

less than with a racehorse in training.BH: Action is a key attraction in owning a racehorse.

Can a stallion syndicate investor get the same rush?SF: Certainly owning a racehorse is the most

fun, but we feel there is still a lot of action with the stallions. My uncle, who (races as) Lucas Downs, is an action junkie. He likes the stallion thing because with Bullet Train, for example, he had 45 2-year-olds last year, so he feels he owns a piece of every one of his progeny.

BH: Why did you decide to acquire Haynesfield last fall?

SF: Bullet Train and Curlin to Mischief are sold out. The luxury with Haynesfield is the investor doesn't have to wait like he does with the new guys. Haynesfield has had four crops and averaged over 90 mares a year his first four years at stud. Since we bought Haynesfield, we've been tracking the entries and he's got one or two every day. It is a lot of action for someone who is a novice.

And the timing was good. He had an impressive maiden winner at Fair Grounds Jan. 8 in Midway Gold. We're pretty excited about him. BH
