From the Principal......
Our junior debating team, under the
management of Mr Jim Rourke returned to
Wingham High with a resounding victory over
St Claire’s recently. I feel that they were at a
distinct advantage over their opponents
however as they had to argue against ‘that
Australians prefer to watch rather than
participate’. Read on and you will see what I
mean....
ANZAC HONOUR….
Nick Thompson Shawn Sullivan Freya Mudie
Tahlia Collins
A more moving ceremony in a school could
not have been experienced than the
Wingham High School ANZAC ceremony held
on the last day of term 1 in the MPC. The
ceremony, organised by Jenny McPhan (HT
History), chaired by our captains Freya Mudie
and Nick Thompson and included members of
the community. Awards were presented by
Mr Eric Richardson to Ailie MacKenzie and
Britany Wallace for their ANZAC essays
Tyler Frankcombe carries the flag
Mr Paul Ivers Mrs Kim Dixon Mr Mark Thomson
Nick and Freya had the honour of being guest
speakers at the dawn service (Nick) and later
town service (Freya). Their heartfelt and
personal addresses were widely
acknowledged as adding a new dimension to
each service. Wingham High School was also
represented by 35 students and many staff
who marched from the
town green to the town
hall.
ATHLETE’S FEAT The
annual school athletics
carnival was held on the
school oval recently after
being postponed by wet
weather. While it was a
heavy track all events were
able to continue and many students got into
the spirit by wearing their house colours.
Murray Doust and Dave Jonas did a great job
of organising the day encouraging maximum
participation by all students. A big thankyou
goes to general assistant Terry Broadbent for
his preparation of the
grounds and patience with the weather.
![Page 4: WINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL · community event and hearing more about it in the next newsletter. There are many other opportunities that students have participated in such as Tennis, Rugby](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042023/5e7b75694a6c4d03d91efb69/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
The BBQ run by the SRC was a popular
location around lunch time for both staff and
students. There are further events to be
completed before the house results are
known and the age champions are
announced. A great time was had by all.
NAPLAN Following straight on from athletics
for the body were athletics of the mind in the
form of the national literacy and numeracy
tests (NAPLAN). These were well organised by
Kay Frankcombe (relieving HT English)and
Cassie Portelli (HT Maths) with minimal
disruption to the rest of the school allowing
all year 7 & 9 students to focus completely on
the tests. Thank you to the staff who
supervised and to Jenny Sedgwick (STLA) who
coordinated students who required special
provisions or alternative rooms.
ROYAL SHOW OFFS By now I am sure you
would have seen the great photo and article
on the front page of the Wingham Chronicle
championing the fantastic results our show
team achieved at the Sydney Royal Easter
Show. The students deserved these results as
they have been working long and hard at
preparing the animals and themselves for this
big event. I would like to acknowledge all the
volunteers who also contribute to the Ag farm
and to transporting the animals and students
to each of the events. Ag teacher Charlie
Cassell’s many hours of work in organising the
trip to Sydney is much appreciated
particularly by the students themselves.
Grant Coleman, manager of the Wingham
abattoirs, travelled to Sydney, purchased our
prize winning steer at auction and then
donated it back to the school in cryovac
packaging for sale. All funds from this will be
put back into the show team for next year’s
events.
BEEF WEEK Beef week is underway as this
edition of the newsletter is being published.
Many of our local Primary schools visited the
farm to participate in a series of activities
highlighting the learning opportunities on
offer at Wingham High School in Agriculture.
Preparation of beef cattle for showing and
parading, judging, animal care, horse care,
and food production are just a few of the
activities presented by Wingham students. I
look forward to being a part of this annual
community event and hearing more about it
in the next newsletter.
There are many other opportunities that
students have participated in such as Tennis,
Rugby League, Touch Football, Short Story
Writing Eisteddfod, SRC Day, Environmental
Awareness and Landcare, Love Bites that are
reported on in this newsletter.

Year Speak
Year 7 Perspective by 7 Lennon
This term year 7 has been quite busy.
Year 7 showing the way…. At the end of last
term our lovely year advisers Mr Smith and
Mrs Harrell organised a morning tea for all the
year 7 students that weren’t on a level. The
students thought all the food was delicious
and it was enjoyed by all. Thanks!!!
Week 3 was a busy week with the athletics
carnival followed by the NAPLAN Tests.
Being year 7’s first athletic carnival everyone
got into the spirit and wore house colours.
Congratulations to Parkes who won over all. A
great day was had by all.
Congratulations to:
Jai Slaven winning the 12 year boys 100m,
200m and shot put.
David Gillian winning the 13 year boys long
jump.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we had
our NAPLAN. On Tuesday we sat our Language
Conventions and Writing, Wednesday we sat
the Reading and on Thursday we had our
numeracy test. Everyone was relieved on
Thursday when we walked out of the hall
knowing we had no more NAPLAN for another
2 years.
In week 4 we have our HVP and Hep B
immunisations.
Year 7s favourite subjects are Personal
Development Health Physical Education,
Mandatory Tech and STAR because we get to
talk on occasions.
Year 8 have commenced paying for their
camp to be held in Term 4 and are also
working on good behaviour to staying off level
cards so they will be able to attend.
8 DEBATING EISTEDDFOD VICTORY! Alex
Menser and Liah Brooks The Year 8 Wingham
High School Debating Team, consisting of Alex
Menser, Jorg Sumpner-Johnston, Darcy Byrne
and Liah Brooks, competed in the Taree and
District Eisteddfod Debating competition. The
initial heats were on Wednesday the 4th at
the manning Entertainment Centre. In the
semi-finals the topic was ‘School canteens
should only seel healthy food.’ They were on
the affirmative side for the debate against
Bulahdelah. The debate was very close and
both teams did very well with the Wingham
team winning by the slightest of margins. This
put them in the finals. On Thursday the 12th
they competed in the finals against Saint
Claire's on the topic ‘Australians would rather
watch than participate.’ They were the
Negative. Once again it was a close run with
Wingham taking the win with a score of 269
out of 300 only beating Saint Claire's by 4
points.
Year 9 students Ailie MacKenzie and Annie
Rourke along with their English class and
3,000 other students entered short stories in
the “Write Now” section of the Sydney
Writers Festival. Both girls wrote stories
involving horror and mystery and gained
Highly Commended awards for their efforts.

Year 10 Have had a successful work
experience and are now working towards
their exams in two weeks. All Drama students
participated in the eisteddfod and gained
valuable experience and praise for their
efforts.
Year 11 On Monday 16th May all of the year
11 attended a talk from Red Cross
Representative Teresa Atkins. It was
informative and students are now ready and
willing to donate bold to those in need. Half
yearly exams are commencing Monday 23rd
and end the following Monday. Good luck
Year 11.
The sizes and nicknames are being finalised
for next year’s jerseys. The cost is $80.00 and
a deposit is necessary before Friday 26th May.
YEAR 11 BIOLOGY – BONNY HILLS
EXCURSION – Mr John Hawkins
The annual Bonny Hills Biology field trip was
undertaken by enthusiastic year 11 Biology
students. Perfect weather was conducive to a
very productive day at the sea. Mr and Mrs
Hawkins ran the fieldtrip with the help of
chief lifeguards, Mr John Surtees and Mrs
Gilbert.
Students were studying the ecological
relationships found on rock platforms as part
of their Preliminary HSC Course.
2011 MODEL UNITED NATIONS
ASSEMBLY Local Yr 11 Wingham students,
Zac Rayson and David Cowley from Wingham
High, were among the 78 students who
participated in Rotary’s Model United Nations
2011 held in Woolgoolga 13-15 May. The
students were sponsored to attend by the
Rotary Club of Wingham and did Wingham
proud.
Zac and David were the delegates from Israel.
They had to use their acting skills, humour
and serious argument to win over others to
their points of view on a range of global
issues. The students were on their feet
numerous times to argue their country’s
views on everything from religious freedoms
to assistance for developing countries.
Woolgoolga High School Hall was decked out
with the flags of over 100 countries for the big
event and student delegates came dressed in
national dress and ready for an argument or
two. The hall was abuzz with couriers
transferring diplomatic notes (and bribes for
votes) and the “military police” had to step in
on the odd occasion and make some arrests!
The Assembly voted Irish delegate Abigail
McMahon from Melville High in Kempsey and
Zimbabwean delegate Jessica Duncan from
Calrossy Anglican School in Tamworth as best
individual delegates. The Iran team from
Woolgoolga High was voted best country
team and the Japan team from St Columba
Anglican School in Port Macquarie won best
national costume.
The real
Australian
Ambassador
to the UN in
New York,
His
Excellency,
Gary
Quinlan,
welcomed
the students
via a DVD
message and
students
travelled to
Woolgoolga
from as far afield as Wauchope, Narrabri,
Coonabarabran, Taree, Tamworth, Kempsey,
Port Macquarie, Inverell, Quirindi, Gunnedah
and Coffs Harbour as well as Wingham.
Year 12 One of the highlights of the athletics
carnival was the boot throwing which year 12
ran as part of their fundraising. If it was
anything to go by this will become an annual
event.
![Page 7: WINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL · community event and hearing more about it in the next newsletter. There are many other opportunities that students have participated in such as Tennis, Rugby](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042023/5e7b75694a6c4d03d91efb69/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
On Courage to Care Excursion Wednesday
the 23rd of March Year 10 and 11 History
students arrived in Gloucester to attend the
Courage to Care presentation and exhibit.
Courage to Care is an educational program
supported by a travelling exhibition and social
tolerance program.
Courage to Care was presented at the
Gloucester Art Gallery during the month of
March. Our Wingham High School students
were privileged to participate in three
activities, which included listening to a
Holocaust survivor, viewing a DVD and
viewing items. Each venue was hosted by
Courage to Care historians and speakers.
Courage to Care inspires visitors to realise
that they as individuals, can make a
difference. Students were encouraged to ask
questions and reflect on their own personal
values.
Wingham Environmental Body
MR J ROURKE WEB is a group of students
who are keen to see positive changes to the
environment both at Wingham High School
and in the local community. They meet every
Friday afternoon during school sport.
The first project that they have taken on is to
increase recycling in the playground. Using
funds from a NSW government eco-schools
grant awarded last year, they plan to
purchase recycling bins which will be placed
strategically around the school. An education
campaign involving messages in rolls, posters
and announcements at assembly is also
underway to encourage students to recycle
and to avoid using non-recyclable materials.
They have launched a competition for
students to design a logo for the group. The
winning design will, it is hoped, be printed
onto stickers to place on the new bins. WEB
has also commenced a blog which may be
viewed by all students and staff to inform
them of latest developments.
Another project that the group would like to
undertake is bush regeneration of the
junction of the Manning River and Cedar Party
Creek, which is located on the school’s farm.
This is an area of great natural beauty which is
suffering from invasion of potato vine, castor
oil plant, lantana and other weeds. Kim
Gollan, from Dingo Creek Rainforest Nursery,
visited the site with the group last Friday and
advised them on how to best tackle the
problem.
This Friday Kirsty Hughes, from Midcoast
Water, will be training the group how to test
water quality. Samples will be taken from the
Manning River adjacent to the wharf in front
of Wingham Brush. She will be returning in
early July to assist the group in testing
samples from Cedar Party Creek, which
should make for interesting comparisons.
The group is keen to make links with the
wider community. If you have any ideas you
would like to share or if you would like to
support the group in any way, please contact
Mr Jim Rourke. Donations of materials or
money for purchase of trees, gardening
equipment etc would be most gratefully
received.

YEAR 11 AGRICULTURE DAIRY FARM VISIT – MR JOHN HAWKINS Students studying the
Preliminary Agriculture Course visited Gary Yarnold at Killawarra to undertake the first part of their
case study farm experience.
These students involved themselves in milking and then completed an extensive worksheet. Gary
kept them all laughing with jokes and made it a great learning experience particularly for students
from Taree and Chatham High Schools and our exchange student, Lavinia Morof.

Well done – played strong. TOCAL FIELD DAYS This year 50 students from the Show Team and Ag
classes attended Tocal Field Days on April 29th.
The students were able to view many local and interstate exhibitors. The main focus of the day was
to experience the variety of Agricultural and support industries available to producers.
This was a very popular excursion and all involved vowed to return next year. Mr Hawkins would like
to thank the students involved in all the excursions for their mature behaviour in a very public area.

SRC LEADING THE WAY
Recently the Student Representative Council
held a training day which included leadership
training workshops designed to promote
relationships between students, develop
communication and leadership skills and to
provide leadership skills and to provide
further
opportunities for
our students to
become leaders in
our school. The day
consisted of “Get to
Know You” games,
dealing with
conflict, what
makes a good
leader, how to run
an event and a look
at the constitution
Sam Cassidy and Sarah Orr.
Voting took place for all the positions that
require action over the next year. Keep a look
out for lunchtime sporting activities.
Year 8 and Year 11 students have commenced
planning for the next year assemblies while
the environment, publicity and positivity
groups continue to work on events for the
future.
![Page 11: WINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL · community event and hearing more about it in the next newsletter. Watch out for lunch time activities and
competitions that will be used to encourage
all students to realise their potential as a
member of the school community. We will be
donating to our only charities this
month….Rotary Shelta Boxes and Stewart
House…the first because it is an Australian
way of helping those overseas and the second
because it is a teacher developed initiative
which can assist students from our own
school.
This is the first newsletter compiled by SRC
P & C News – Mrs Anne Munns President
Hi Everyone Welcome back to a new term.
Hope you have all settled in now for the
school year. The year is going fast, we are
already half way through this term.
The Anzac Day service is something the school
should be proud of. It was a great service and
our school leaders as usual did a wonderful
job of running the assembly.
Term 2 has begun and Lynda has done the
menus for Terms 2 & 3. There have been
some price rises although only small. Our
food in the canteen is very affordable for all
to enjoy throughout the school. The Hot
Chocolate is now available again for the next
two terms. The extra stove is working well
and being used to make all the extra foods.
Many thanks to Mr Matt Watson for installing
the stove and also to Mr Dave Irvine for
adjusting the shelves in the room to enable
the stove to be installed.
Canteen Day is on again in June and we have
set our date for Tuesday 28 June. We are
looking to do some interesting things for
Canteen Day once again. This is a good time
to promote the foods available in the
canteen.
We have a new Treasurer for the P & C. Mrs
Therese Hopkins has kindly taken on the role
of treasurer. Many thanks go to Mrs Liz Jarvis
who has been our treasurer for several years
and has been a hard worker and a great
support to the P & C.
The next Regional P & C Meeting is to be held
at Nabiac Primary School on Saturday 28 May
2011, this was to be at 2pm but has been
brought forward to 12.30pm. All are welcome
to attend these meetings.
Congratulations to Mr Cassels and our Ag
Team for all of the ribbons they received at
the Royal Easter Show. All of your hard work
has been rewarded.
The Rotary dinner which supports our school
bus has been set for Tuesday 9 August 2011 at
the school MPC.
The Volunteers Luncheon has been set for
Friday 18 November 2011. So all volunteers
please put this on your calendar and come
and enjoy a lunch with other volunteers like
you. The is always good and enjoyable way to
end the year.
I must thank all volunteers for their
contribution to our school and the P & C. No
