Why we like to showcase Canberra wines

The Canberra District offers visitors a smorgasbord of experiences, from

snow-capped mountains to premium cool-climate wineries.

Canberra District wines deliver unique qualities derived from an

environment like no other in Australia. The Canberra District It’s a relatively

young wine industry by Australian standards, but among the star performers of

the region is

Riesling, which is well suited to the cooler temperatures.

However, that’s not to knock the juicy red berry fruits from the district, with

winemakers producing incredible award-winning shiraz in particular. Sip a vari-

ety of exciting blends, plus traditional wine styles.

Canberra District

Canberra District wineries first emerged in the 1970's, the first plantings by a pioneer,

Dr Edgar Riek, followed by Dr John Kirk, who first planted vines at Murrumbateman,

naming his vineyard Clonakilla.

The wine is known for its high quality and cool climate expressions. wineries are typi-

cally small, boutique operations, many of which were founded by local civil servants,

academics and scientists from CSIRO.

Canberra District wineries are known for their cool climate wine styles, particularly me-

dium bodied, savoury Shiraz and crisp, age-worthy Riesling, which are arguably the

regional hero varieties
