NICK CLARK – 40 years and countingAfter 40 years, having founded HH&C with Anthony Hanson MW and the late Denis Haynes in 1978, Nick Clark has stepped back from the day to day management of the company. Fear not, those of you who have relied on Nick’s wine knowledge and advice over the years, he remains firmly involved as a consultant. His unique skills will keep your cellars in good health for many years ahead. I am immensely proud, having worked with Nick for the past 28 years, to have taken over his role as managing director. His steady hand and sound judgement have ensured HH&C has sailed strongly through the 40 year mark and I look forward to a long and promising future.

NEW NAMES, LABELS, RECENT SHIPMENTSThere have been a number of great new finds this year. Our Loire Valley listings have expanded to include a superb trio from Alexandre Cady in the Layon, plus an exciting, vibrant new Reuilly blanc from Domaine Mabillot. Red Loire wines have made a huge resurgence this year; great Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny and even Côte Roannaise, we cover all them all brilliantly (see pages 30-31).

Our Rhone listings are more exciting then ever. Whether you favour the warmth and spice of the southern reds or the finely perfumed, elegant Syrahs from the north, we are hugely proud of and excited by our range (pages 35-38).

I firmly believe we have the finest range of drinking Claret in the £8 - £18 bracket. We select wines that we personally want to drink and which offer good value for money. These are Bordeaux reds that are supple, with elegant styles and genuine fruit (nothing forced, nothing woody, nothing weedy). We are so proud of this range we put Ch Peyrat La Chapelle (page 4) on the front cover of this list.

Our Burgundy listings go from strength to strength. Last year’s new growers and wines we introduced to the UK were Thibaud Clerget’s Volnays, Violot-Guillemard’s Pommards, Chapelle de Blagny’s Meursaults and Philippe Pascal’s Givry 1er Cru. Now we have added Charles Magnien in Gevrey-Chambertin and Domaine Pavelot in Pernand-Vergelesses. See our web-site for current up-dates from our man in Burgundy – Anthony Hanson MW.

THANK YOUI would like to thank all our customers for their continued and loyal support. We look forward to helping you with your wine choices to ensure you enjoy the very best bottles over the coming months.

The wine has a bright ruby colour with most attractive, scented, ripe aromas. The textures in the mouth are both elegant and layered, the fruit being sweet and alluring. 2014 VIEUX CHÂTEAU SAINT ANDRÉMontagne-Saint-Émilion 225.00 18.75 21.20Vieux Chateau Saint André has been the family home of legendary winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet since 1978. For 44 vintages Jean-Claude was head winemaker at Ch Pétrus (a job passed onto his son Olivier in 2007). At home, he has built up his family property in Montagne Saint-Emilion to 12 hectares, which he runs with his other son, Jean-François. His preference for elegance over extraction shines through in this 2014. A blend of 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (of which 20% were new), colour is mid ruby, aromas being attractive and very fine, recalling delicately spiced red cherries. Palate is medium bodied, poised and pure, with the most gorgeous, satin-like texture. The finish is long-flavoured and full of finesse.

2014 BLASON D`ISSANMargaux 324.00 27.00 30.45We have secured a parcel of this beautiful Margaux, the second wine of Third Growth Ch d’Issan, at the original, En Primeur price. This is a blend of perfectly ripe Merlot (53%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (47%), giving a wine that has a deep purple colour and gorgeously floral, dark berry aromas. Full in body, pure, juicy fruit shines clearly on the palate, with persistent length and well-rounded aftertaste. This is an enormously pretty wine that will give huge pleasure now, but can equally be tucked away for many years to come (for drinking now-2025+).

2012 CH VIEUX-LARTIGUEGrand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion 229.20 19.10 21.50This is a small property on sandy-gravel soils, with a production of about 130 barrels. Planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the average age of the vineyard is now 35 years. After fermentation in temperature controlled, stainless steel vats, the wine was aged in 40% new oak barrels, the balance being in one-year barrels. Colour is red purple of medium depth, the nose showing brightly fruity, cherry aromas which are vibrant and fresh. The palate starts full-bodied, with dense, gentle fruitiness throughout, then well-sustained aftertaste, with fine tannins in balance and good length (for drinking now-2020+).

2012 CH MAUVESIN-BARTONCru Bourgeois, Moulis-en-Médoc 237.00 19.75 22.25The Barton family of St-Julien’s prestigious Châteaux Langoa and Léoville Barton purchased this Moulis property in 2011, this is their second vintage. The soils combine pure gravel banks – perfect for Cabernet – and chalky clay – ideal for Merlot. This is a rich and voluptuous Bordeaux. With dark berry fruits and complex spiciness. A wine with plenty of depth and character, it is drinking well now and with a good future ahead.

The aroma of the 2012 is intensely perfumed, combining ripe red fruits and wild flowers. This is a wonderfully precise, linear wine, with a concentrated, impressive middle and racy freshness to finish. We highly recommended it for immediate drinking (from now-2022+).

B E A U J O L A I SWith land prices in Burgundy becoming ever more expensive, many young vignerons have been looking further south, to Beaujolais, to find more affordable vineyards. The result has increased the excitement and interest in the Beaujolais market. We have a brilliant range: from the purity of Domaine Boulon’s old vine Beaujolais 2017 and bright fruitiness of Gilbet Chetaille’s 2017 Côte de Brouilly, to the more complex styles of the Morgon Vieilles Vignes from Raymond Bouland and Chiroubles of Alain Passot.

R E D B U R G U N D YWe are hugely fortunate to have Anthony Hanson MW living in Burgundy with his ear, constantly, to the ground. In the past two years he has been responsible for finding many exciting new producers for the HH&C list, including the brilliant Thibaud Clerget in Volnay and the elegant wines of Thierry Violot-Guillemard in Pommard. Closer to his home he has introduced Domaine Pavelot, a superb estate in Pernand-Vergelesses (see their 1er Cru Les Vergelesses 2015 on page 16 and their delicious white 1er Cru Caradeux 2015 in the White Burgundy section on page 26).

We also must thank Anthony for the exciting Domaine Cellier Aux Moines in Givry. You will find their Premier Cru Clos du Cellier aux Moines 2015 on page 17 – a must for all Burgundy lovers.

The grapes for this wine came from the hamlet of Poncey, in the southern part of the appellation. In colour, this is rich, purple-ruby with very clean, fresh Pinot aromas. Palate shows impressive fruit intensity and fine capacity for ageing, thanks to its balanced structure, acidity and tannins. This is an harmonious, fine wine for early and mid-term enjoyment (for drinking 2018-2022+).

2015 MERCUREY ROUGE 1ER CRU CLOS DES MYGLANDSDomaine Faiveley 310.00 25.83 29.10This is the second vintage to have benefited from Faiveley’s up-grading of their winery in Mercurey. The wines now ferment in smaller vats, with more precise temperature control. A modest, judicious proportion of new oak was chosen for its barrel-ageing. Medium deep, purple-ruby in colour, the wine shows fully-ripened Pinot Noir aromas of great charm. Palate is full-bodied, with fleshy texture, well knit, fine tannins, great follow-through and elegant length. This is superb value (for drinking now-2030+).

2015 PERNAND-VERGELESSES ROUGE 1ER CRU LES VERGELESSESDomaine Pavelot 372.00 31.00 34.95This wine comes from a vineyard which has now reached full maturity, having been planted 25 years ago, in 1992. The land is east-facing and gently sloping, with a narrow band of fertile, clay-rich soil over-laying the limestone rock. This gives a powerful wine, with dense fruitness and good potential for ageing. It was bottled in June 2017. Colour is bright, rich purple, nose showing lively, red fruit aromas. Palate starts round, with ample fruitiness, then comes fine structure, with excellent length (for drinking winter 2018-2025+).

2015 GIVRY 1ER CRU CLOS DU CELLIER AUX MOINESDomaine du Cellier aux Moines 6b 198.00 33.00 37.25Before deciding on the blend for this wine, the produce of the estate’s youngest vines, along with any Pinot bunches showing less than perfect ripeness when checked on the sorting tables, were eliminated. For this final blend, two separate cuvées have been assembled together. One comes from recently planted Pinots (aged between 5 and 9 years old) growing in shallow soils towards the top of the Clos. The other comes from deeper soils in the mid-part of the slope, from old vines planted in the mid-1970s. Colour is a lively, deep purple-ruby, with aromas showing pungent, ripe fruitiness, with freshness. A proportion of whole bunches was included in the fermentation, adding complexity. In the mouth, this has magnificent structure, which is well-sustained through mid-palate, culminating in supple tannins and delicious, fresh length. This is a strikingly lovely wine, and superb value (for drinking 2018-2025+).

2015 POMMARD PETIT NOIZONSDomaine Seguin-Manuel 451.00 37.58 42.30One of the stand-out bottles of the vintage here, this comes fom a south-facing vineyard uphill from First Growths Les Arvelets and Les Charmots. The fruit was so healthy that a judicious proportion of whole bunches were added, bringing complex spiciness. Colour is rich, ruby-purple, with aromas showing superbly ripe, fresh Pinot fruitiness. Palate is well structured without being heavy, with beguilingly characterful, dense fruit. Tannins are present without harshness, the aftertaste being impressively long (for drinking 2019-2030+).

They lie between the Abbaye de Morgeot and the Santenay commune border. These are really fine Pinots giving small bunches with tiny, thick-skinned grapes. This year, thanks to the ripeness of the vintage, Marc-Antonin elected to vinify with 1/3 whole bunches, which has added aromatic complexities. This is impressive, purple-ruby, with attractive floral and gently spiced aromas. The palate shows outstanding fruit concentration, rich tannins and impressive length (for drinking now-2022+).

W H I T E B U R G U N D YOver the summer the first shipments of 2017 whites have been arriving from the Maconnais. The wines have been warmly welcomed by all our customers – it is clearly a wonderful vintage. Our different producers in the villages of Uchizy, neighbouring Chardonnay and (further south) Prissé have come up trumps; the wines are bright, racy and have superb purity.

Before Christmas 2018, we will be receiving the first Côte Chalonnaise 2017 whites from Olivier Leflaive, as well as their classy Aligoté.

We have a new parcel arriving from Agnes Paquet of her white Auxey-Duresses 2015. This chalky limestone vineyard, with its naturally fresh character, has produced a wine of perfect balance in the rich 2015 vintage. It is a beautiful glass of white burgundy, ready for immediate drinking, and tremendous value.

Our Mâcon-Uchizy is a bright and vivacious wine, displaying intense lemony aromas and richness on the palate. The texture is creamy and there is good depth of flavour with lovely, racy freshness. Completely unoaked, there is a sense of purity to this wine, with a very clean finish.

2016 CHABLISDomaine Daniel Dampt 24h 208.80 8.70 9.802016 was a successful harvest for Domaine Dampt, giving a more typical Chablis style than 2015, with better acidity levels. There is no oak used here, allowing for the purity of the grapes and the expression of the chalk slopes to shine. The aromas are very fragrant, being fresh and attractive. Ripe, clean and supple in texture, there is a lemony zip to this wine and a lovely stony finish.

This unoaked, 2016 Mâcon-Chaintré is vibrantly pure and aromatic on the nose, recalling ripe lemons and white peach. The palate is medium bodied, intensely flavoured and vivacious. Texture is silky, the finish being long and crisp.

As we often find with this wine, it has an attractive, perfumed quality, and a lightness of step on the palate. The 2016 has a brilliant, pale lemon-green colour, with very pretty, floral-citrusy aromas. The palate is medium bodied, delicately structured and creamily textured. When you climb the slope, you can understand why the vineyard is named “under the donkey’s back”, as the vines are sheltered to the north by a huge, long hummock of stones and trees which resemble the slumbering animal. Colour is very pretty green-golden, with lovely, ripe aromas of great elegance. The palate is immediately seductive, showing creamy texture, charming fruit concentration, and exceptional length. Just 20% of new barrels were chosen for this wine’s ageing, and their presence is imperceptible, so well have all elements merged together. Flavours finish freshly, with just the right amount of crispness. This will age well, but it may be very hard to resist enjoying immediately.

Their 2015 Viré-Clessé is the product of unwavering attention to detail - this is a simply beautiful wine where richness is lifted by racy acidity. With bright, pale lemon-green colour, aromas are intense and vibrant, recalling fresh lime and white peach. This is a full bodied yet linear wine with wonderful purity of fragrant fruit flavours and a precise, mineral backbone. Texture is satin-like, the finish being energetic and fine.

2015 AUXEY-DURESSES BLANCDomaine Agnès Paquet 279.60 23.30 26.25The soils where these 90 year-old vines grow are rich in limestone, giving intense fruit and liveliness to this wine. It fermented in oak barrels (of which 15% were new), matured in them until July 2016, then rested in tank until bottling in November. Pale lemon-gold incolour, this has clean, light, fine aromas. Palate is medium-bodied, with rich, fresh fruitiness and fine, harmonious aftertaste. A beautiful wine, and great value (for drinking now-2020+).

L O I R E V A L L E Y

L O I R E V A L L E YWe have introduced some new names to our Loire listing, and greatly strengthened the selection of reds. The 2017 dry whites are simply brilliant, with a freshness and verve combining perfectly with ripe fruit characters. These wines, across the whole range, are delicious for immediate drinking and we warmly recommend them.

2017 MUSCADET SÈVRE & MAINE SUR LIEDomaine de la Chauvinière 106.90 8.91 10.002017 is a delicious vintage for Muscadet. This expressive, racy wine from Domaine de la Chauvinière has lovely concentration and depth of flavour - the result of perfectly ripened, healthy grapes. Very pale lemon-gold colour, the nose is perfumed and lifted, the palate being light and linear, recalling citrus fruits and elderflowers, all held precisely in place by a line of fresh minerality. The acidity is in perfect harmony, the finish being zippy and vibrant.

2017 ANJOU BLANCDomaine Alexandre Cady 125.00 10.42 11.70Alexandre is the 4th generation of Cadys to run this family estate, which excels in producing immaculate, precise Chenin Blancs, farmed organically and hand harvested. This light, vivacious, dry Anjou was made in concrete tanks and bottled early, to encase the wine’s lemony-apple aromas and crisp, bouncy, supple palate. This is a wonderful new discovery for our selection: perfect to drink as a palate-cleansing aperitif and over the warmer months ahead.

REDSWe love red Loire wines. We drink them at home and recommend them tirelessly for their superb value and quality. New from the Côte Roannaise is a lively 2017 Gamay that is bright, fruity and refreshing. As well as the brilliant Chinons from Domaine de la Noblaie, please do not miss out on the two excellent cuvées of Bourgueil from Domaine de la Lande: the Prestige 2015, that needs bottle age, and the simply stunning Les Pins 2015, ready for immediate enjoyment.

2017 LE PARTAGE GAMAYLe Retour Aux Sources, Côte Roannaise 138.00 11.50 12.95The Côte Roannaise is one of the Loire Valley’s southernmost vineyards. Lying west of Lyon and south-west of the Beaujolais, the soils are granite based (as they are in the Beaujolais), and it is the Gamay grape that is particularly successful here, giving reds that are vibrantly fruity and light of step. Mid ruby-purple, aromas are clean and full of red cherry fruitiness. Palate is light bodied and with good concentration of crunchy red berry flavours. An easy drinking, refreshing style, the finish is lifted and bright.

2015 BOURGUEIL LES PINSDomaine de la Lande 153.00 12.75 14.35The Delaunays of Domaine de la Lande are the unflashiest wine-growers we know in the Loire. Each time we visit them, and when we enjoy their bottles at a more leisurely pace, we are amazed by the quality of their reds, especially given their modest prices. 100% organic, they have a natural richness and purity, coming from gentle, uncomplicated, well-considered winemaking. This 2015 ‘Les Pins’ is a wonderfully juicy 100% Cabernet Franc. Bright ruby-purple, red fruit aromas spring from the glass, palate being medium bodied and with lovely concentration. The finish is clean, fresh and ripe.

2016 COTEAUX DU LAYON SAINT AUBINDomaine Alexandre Cady 175.00 14.58 16.40The vines for this wine lie in the Layon Valley, famous for brilliant sweet whites. There is a magical alchemy at work here, where the character of the schist soils brings bright, mineral freshness to the super-ripe Chenin Blanc grapes. The results are rich, intense wines which are also racy, delicate and refined. This organic Saint Aubin is the lightest of Alexandre’s sweet Chenins, being sourced from 50% botrytis-affected, and 50% golden grapes, subsequently fermented and matured in tank. Bright, pale lemon-gold colour, aromas are scented and fine, recalling sweet pineapple and peach. Luscious, mouth-coating richness is enlivened by lemony acidity on the palate. The finish is fine, vivacious and long lasting.

His experience, in particular with Pinot Noir, is reflected in his skilful, light touch today. This is a classic Languedoc blend of 60% Syrah with 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Carignan. The 2017 Espérance is a beautiful, bright, purple-ruby colour, with intense aromas of ripe red fruits, violets and scented rose petals. There is a succulent, juiciness to the fruit in the mouth, with tremendous depth of flavour and super-fine texture. The wine has ample structure and youthful vibrance to finish. R H Ô N E V A L L E Y

R H Ô N E V A L L E YThe Rhone valley produces two distinct styles of red wine. The north, including Côte-Rôtie, Crozes Hermitage, Cornas and Saint Joseph, give us reds of pure Syrah. The wines are fresh, perfumed and relatively light, normally being from 12.5% to 13% alcohol. If you are a fan of red Burgundies, we would highly recommend discovering these brilliant wines. The southern Rhône is climatically warmer and drier; here Grenache thrives, forming the backbone of many wines, with a plethora of supporting grape varieties. The wines have a wonderfully rich, more powerful character, with spicy charm. We have many great Domaines in the south, from Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe and many of the surrounding villages that provide excellent Côtes-du-Rhônes.

2017 PAS DES ROCHES CÔTES DU RHÔNERich, youthful purple in colour, the 2017 is another super success for the Pas des Roches Côtes du Rhône. The aromas are brightly scented, floral, with ripe red fruits. The palate is succulent, vibrant and juicy, with a lovely mouth-coating texture and great freshness. Great value for money, we recommend this hugely popular red as a staple for winter.

2017 RITOU SYRAHVin de France, Domaine Vallet 144.00 12.00 13.50Named for Anthony Vallet`s grandfather Henri, who was fondly known as `Ritou`, this 100% Syrah is from vines that lie just outside the Saint-Joseph appellation, on pebbly plots on the banks of the River Rhône. Here, Anthony focusses his attention on producing a silky, easy-drinking, approachable Syrah, to contrast with his more concentrated, structured Saint-Josephs. The 2017 has charming aromas of red berries and gentle, smoked spices. This is a clean, vibrant wine, elegant in style. Juicy and supple, it has a lovely texture and a fresh finish.

This delicious, generous 2016 Ventoux is from an 8 hectare plot of 40-50 year old vines that the family owns in the village of Aubignan, just south of Beaumes de Venise. The blend here is 50% Grenache with 40% Syrah and 10% Carignan, which were all destemmed and matured in concrete tanks to preserve the vital, dark berry fruitiness of this wine. Deep ruby-purple colour, aromas are perfumed and full of black and red cherries. Palate is full and fleshy, with good, concentrated middle, a fine frame, and a fresh, lively finish. “We aim to make a wine here that is approachable, and really drinkable,” says Bernand - this he has acheived!

CHARLES HEIDSIECKBrut Réserve NV 6b 239.70 39.95 44.95In time for Christmas and New Year celebrations, we are thrilled to have made another shipment from Charles Heidsieck in Reims. Our direct link with the House has allowed us to retain our incredibly competitive price. Wines from no fewer than 60 different crus go into this assemblage, one third each coming from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. 40% of the blend comes from aged reserve wine (much higher than seen elsewhere). These factors, along with the long, six year maturation in bottle, explains the intense flavour complexity, sensuous texture and superbly fresh length of this Non-Vintage champagne. With apricot, toasted hazelnut and honey aromas, this is expressive, precise, and thrilling.

I T A L Y

I T A L YFrom the brilliant Sicilian Grillo Rupe Secca to the Kurtacsh Pinot Grigio grown on the slopes of Alto Adige, all our Italian whites are bright, crisp and lively in style. You will find a new red listing: Chianti Classico Fonterutoli 2016, a classic, stylish wine grown on limestone. For value, we highly recommend the Nero d’Avola Rupe Secca, which arrived on our shelves over the summer.

2017 LAGREINKellerei Kurtatsch, Alto Adige 165.00 13.75 15.50Lagrein produces grapes that are thick skinned and dark and its wines are deeply coloured and immensely characterful. The aromas of this 2017 vintage ripe and concentrated, with perfumed, dark cherry, violets dominating. The palate is sensational, the most pure and silky Lagrein we have ever shipped. There is ample ripe fruit and fleshy textures, with liberating freshness and a long, elegant finish.

The colour is bright ruby with super-pure, intense, ripe black cherry aromas. There is lovely, luscious fruit in the mouth, being juicy and fleshy and yet vibrant and full of life. There is more structure here than in the 2015, with fine, balanced tannins and a fresh finish.

2016 ROSSO DI MONTALCINOIl Colle 220.80 18.40 20.702016 is another super vintage in Tuscany. Mid ruby colour, Caterina Carli`s Rosso di Montalcino is scented and complex, recalling red berries, spices and sweet plums. The wine is aged for 18 months in large, old, Slavonian oak botti, which gives a wonderful creaminess to the texture. This is an elegant, silky wine, with no harsh tannins, and impressive depth of middle fruit. There is a bright character and a long, fine finish (for drinking from 2018-2020+).

2016 KUMEU RIVER MATÉ`S VINEYARD CHARDONNAYAuckland 12b 408.00 34.00 38.25Planted in 1990, the Maté`s vineyard is the king of the Kumeu crop - the most concentrated, structured and splendid of all the Kumeu River Chardonnays. Classically this wine is reserved when young, and this is certainly the case in the 2016 vintage. The colour is bright lemon-green, nose being tightly woven, with hints of white peach and smoky minerality. The palate is more explosive, being wonderfully richly layered and mouthcoatingly textured; this is distinctly more powerful than the other 2016s from the estate, but maintains a perfect balance and freshness. The finish is mineral, spicy, refreshing and long-flavoured. This is a wine with immense concentration and vibrancy, that has superb potential (for drinking 2019-2026+).

It is from the Domfrontais appellation, an area with a long tradition of pear orchards which accounts for the softer, fruity character of the Calvados. Made on a single farm, this is small, high quality production. If you have not tried this before, we highly recommend tucking a bottle in with your next delivery.
