Calving Ease and Birth Weight: Our breeding program has emphasized reasonable birth weights and the average birth weight of our calves has decreased markedly in recent years. Our cows and heifers calve without problems.

Bull Development: All of our bulls are grown on grass and mother's milk prior to weaning. They receive no creep feed! After weaning the bulls from both herds are fed together in a large pen and developed on a high protein cereal silage and alfalfa hay ration with mineral/vitamin fortified 14% pellets and rolled barley. This enables the bulls to express their growth potential without excessive fattening.

In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

ULTRASOUND CARCASS MEASUREMENTSRib Fat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and13th Reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3, & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 1000lb carcass would have 600lbs of lean muscle and 400lbs of bone and fat.Ribeye Area (REA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat will lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield.Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal. Reported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield.Intramuscular Fat (%IMF)/ Marbling:

This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in “%”, it is used to determine the quality grade of the carcass. As %IMF increases so does juiciness, flavor, and tenderness, all factors affecting eating quality.

USING ULTRASOUND DATA TO SELECT BULLS1. Fat levels, including marbling, will normally be higher in steers than in similarly fed bulls due to the lack of testosterone.2. Carcass traits such as ribeye area (REA) and marbling (%IMF) are highly heritable, therefore using sires with high

ultrasound scores for these traits will significantly improve carcass quality.3. Significant premiums are being paid by packers for carcasses that meet high quality grade and yield grade standards. There

are extra profits to be made!4. Less backfat is not always better! Extremely low backfat bulls may sire steers with high yield grades, but they may be slow

to finish. Their heifer counterparts may reach puberty later and have more difficulty milking, rebreeding and maintaining a short calving interval. On the other hand, overfat bulls may have reduced fertility.

5. Evaluate your cowherd, decide what kind of progeny you wish to produce and choose bulls with the ultrasound data to match your needs.

Windy Willows Farms have been performance testing our herd on the Canadian Angus Performance Program (CAP) since its inception.. We use the information within our own herd and we pride ourselves in providing useful performance information to you so that you can use it to help select the bull or bulls that best suit your operation. We do understand, however, that all these numbers can be mind boggling. This page will try to make some sense of the performance information that is provided in this catalog so that you may use it more effectively.

GROWTH TRAITSBirth Weight (BW) – the actual weight of the calf taken within 24 hours of birth, not a guess and not a taped estimate.Calving Ease (CE) – describes the type of birth. Codes used are: U – unassisted, E – easy pull, H – hard pull, M – malpresentation and S – surgical.Age of Dam (AOD) – age of dam at time of calving. Two year olds, 3 year olds and very old cows tend to have lighter calves at birth.Weaning Weight (WW) or (Adjusted 205 Day Wt) - the weight taken at weaning and adjusted to 205 days of age, also adjusted for the age of dam.Weaning Index or Adjusted 205 Day Index – a means of comparing an individual bull’s weaning weight to the average weaning weight of his group. Weaning weights and indexes are only comparable within the herd of origin, not between herds.Yearling Weight (YW) – the weight taken at end of test and adjusted to 365 days of age.Average Daily Gain (ADG) – the average daily gain while on 112 day gain test. The gain test begins after a 28 day adjustment period to allow bulls from the 4 different herds to adapt to a common environment at the feedlot.ADG Index – a means of comparing an individual bull’s ADG to the average of his group. It is expressed as a percentage of the group ADG.Weight Per Day of Age (WPDA) – the weight of a bull at end of test divided by his age in days.WPDA Index - a means of relating an individual bull’s WPDA to the average of his group. It is expressed as a percentage of the group WPDA.What is an EPD? (Expected Progeny Difference) – An EPD is a measure of differences in a trait that will be expected from progeny of different sires. EPDs are expressed in pounds plus (+) or minus (-) a zero standard.Why are EPDs valuable as a selection tool? – EPDs can be used to compare bulls in different herds within the same breed. They are based on an individual’s performance as well as that of his relatives and progeny. They factor out the management and environmental differences that may exist between herds.Accuracy (Acc) – the more information that is used to calculate an EPD, the more reliable it is. Accuracies are expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The closer the accuracy is to 1, the greater the probability that the EPD will not change with the addition of more information.BW EPD - the difference in birth weight you would expect between a bull’s calves and calves from a bull with a BW EPD of 0. It is a much more accurate indication of expected progeny birth weight than the bull’s own BW. All the Black bulls designated as Calving Ease in this catalog have BW EPDs of +3.0 or less. Black bulls designated as Calving Ease Elite have BW EPDs below +1.0.WW EPD – the difference in weaning weight you would expect between a bull’s calves and calves from a bull with a WW EPD of 0. Bulls with higher WW EPDs will sire heavier calves at weaning.

YW EPD – the difference in yearling weight you would expect between a bull’s calves and calves from a bull with a YW EPD of 0. Bulls with higher YW EPDs will sire heavier calves at yearling age.MILK EPD – the difference in weaning weight attributable to milking ability you would expect from a bull’s daughters’ progeny and progeny of daughters of a bull with a MILK EPD of 0. Bulls with higher MILK EPDs will sire daughters that will have heavier calves at weaning due to their milking ability.Average EPD - It is helpful to know the average EPD for all calves born in 2012.

It is important to note that Black and Red EPDs cannot be directly compared.

Percentile – a ranking of a bull within the population by percentage. It is helpful to know where a bull ranks in the population for a particular trait.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN!

Calving Ease & Calving Ease Elite BullsIn response to our customers needs we have designated a group of bulls that we would recommend for heifers based primarily on their Birth Weight EPD.

Most of these bulls have been bred for calving ease and represent at least two generations of calving ease sires. These designations are guidelines and only you can decide which bulls are most appropriate for your situation.

The Black bulls that have been designated Calving Ease (CE) have a BW EPD of +1.0 to +2.8 for this important trait. (Red bulls are 0 to +1.2.) The Black bulls designated as Calving Ease Elite (CEE) have a BW EPD of below +1.0 and are in the top 10% of the breed for low birth weight. (Red bulls are below 0.)

of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder

the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible

Windy Willows Angus has been a long time client of South West Animal

Health Centre. The herd has been on a comprehensive health program for

many years and follows the most up to date recommendations as to vaccination

protocols.

The entire herd is on a modified live vaccination protocol which includes

IBR, BVD Type I and II, PI3, and BRSV. The young calves receive at least 2 and

most often 3 shots of this vaccine as well as 7 or 8 way clostridial and

hemophilus by the time they are yearlings.

The purpose of such a vaccination program is to have and sell healthy cattle

with a minimal risk of getting sick or transmitting disease. The protocol

ensures No BVD carrier calves are born.

All cattle receive a pour on ivermectin in the fall. The calves are weaned in

early October and are fed a balanced ration that allows them to grow at their

genetic potential.

All bulls are semen evaluated and only satisfactory potential breeders sell in

their sale with any non-testers supplying a freezer beef clientel.

The Canadian Elite Cow ReportThe Canadian Elite Cow Report is an effort to identify superior cows in the Angus breed. Emphasis is placed on early puberty,

breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving and above-average performance of the offspring. The Elite Cow Report requires a cow to have a minimum of four calves to determine her regularity of calving and ability to consistently produce calves with a superior weaning weight year after year.

We are proud of the number of Elite Cows we have in the Windy Willows herd. A total of 58 of our cows have been designated as Elite Cows and 18 of them are currently in our herd. Upward has quickly become one of the most popular bulls of the breed. He is unmatched for weaning and yearling growth with moderate birth weights. His daughters' milking ability and his carcass genetics are a bonus not usually found in a high growth bull. His calves at WWF, both bulls and heifers, exhibit his performance and eye appeal. Last year his sons were extremely popular and were among the high sellers.

e would like to welcome all our friends, neighbours and customers, old and new, to our W10th Anniversary Sale! It seems like yesterday that we held our first sale here at the farm. We are very grateful to everyone who has helped us make this annual event so successful, especially all of our customers. Without your support this sale would not be possible.

We are very pleased with the bulls on offer this year. Once again we have an outstanding set of Upward sons and a new and exciting sire group by Chisum. We are also excited about the Kodiak 1W sons on offer, they look awesome! The red bulls include sons of Red U-2 Dynamo 7021T, Red Flying K Wizard 7W and the performance and carcass sire, Red WWF Ambush 197S.

The bulls were weaned in early October without creep. Their ration this year was lower in energy than in past years which accounts for the lower yearling weights and average daily gain. The average daily gain up to Feb 19 was just under 3 lbs /day. The bulls look great, probably a little more athletic than in the past and we are confident that they will be fit and ready to breed when you need them.

We aim to provide our customers with the best service available and we stand behind our bulls 100%. If you should have a problem, we want to be the first to know so that we can deal with it.

Once again we are offering a selection of purebred yearling heifers from the heart of our herd, which include daughters of two of our Elite Dams. New this year will be approximately 25 commercial Black Angus heifers with calves at side. Be sure to check them out!

Our friends and neighbours, Garner & Lori Deobald and family from Cedarlea Farms will be joining us with another set of strong yearling Charolais bulls as well as their feature herd sire Gridmaker. FEATURE: Upper Level is a worthy individual to lead of the 2013 Git 'R Done catalog. His dam is none other than the Catherine cow who has been a very successful donor cow for us. A son sold in last year's sale to Ray Schulhauser at Dysart for his excellent purebred herd. A daughter is a highly prized and productive cow at Jones Land and Cattle Co. at Barrhead, AB and a grandson is in heavy use at Windy Willows. Upper Level is a natural son of the old cow and had a very acceptable birth weight of 82 lbs and then posted a weaning index of 119. Check him out. Here is a herdbull in the making.

FEATURE: Everybody has one or two of those cows that often go unnoticed in the herd but always quietly go about their business and do a bang up job in production. Erica 163N is one such cow! She is very moderate in her frame, maintains herself in nice condition and never seems to have any problems of any kind, a money maker for sure! Upper Class has a big hip, is very long bodied and eye appealing. Ultrasound scan shows him to be well above average for both ribeye area and marbling. His full brother was selected by Duckworth Ranches in last year's sale.

Upward 8Z is the fastest gaining bull on test this year. A full brother to this calf sold to the Kruzcko Ranch in last year's sale. Erelite 43K was the high selling heifer calf when she came to Windy Willows from a Southern Angus Production sale.

Upward 52Z is a good calf that will be make friends on sale day and rightly so. His maternal sister was the high selling heifer in last year's sale to Jonathon Thomason at $4200.

This Upward son is one of those bulls that you keep finding when going through the bulls. He is a high performance bull indexing 114 at weaning and 119 as a yearling. Iron Man did a super job here and his daughters have really come to the forefront as they reach their most productive years.

Dam is one of our very productive Bruno daughters. Bruno did a super job for us.

FEATURE: This bull is a looker and in Rob's opinion he just may be this year's best Upward son. He is a ¾ brother to the two high selling Upward sons in last year's sale. Barbara 96M has never had a heifer calf and if she ever does we will not part with it. Two sons of this cow have been used in purebred herds and we have retained on interest in one of them for future use.

Kodiak 1W came to Windy Willows as the top selling bull in the 2010 Everblack Common Sense Bull Sale. He is a ¾ brother to the Kodiak 9194 bull at Genex. We were looking for a calving ease bull with thickness and eye appeal and we found him in 1W. He was used on heifers that first year and he did a super job. The Kodiak sons are heavily muscled with lots of hair and a very attractive pattern. We lost him to a shoulder injury and we don't have semen so there won't be many more of his sons and that is very unfortunate!

Another Chisum - Iron Man combination and this one indexed 119 at weaning ranking 3rd out of 27 bulls in his group.

Chisum and Main Street are both high performance sires and this bull lives up to his heritage posting indexes of 115 at weaning and 120 at a year.

FEATURE: It was really tough to decide which Kodiak 1W son to give the leadoff position in the catalog. Kodiak 103Z gets the nod as he best displays the muscle, hair and style that his sire is noted for. In addition he was one of the highest gaining bulls on test and he scanned the third largest ribeye in the offering. His dam is a very attractive Final Answer daughter. Her first calf, a full sister to 103Z, is one of our best two year olds to calve this year. Check this bull carefully, he could be the one!

You have to admire the muscle, hair and depth of body this bull exhibits. His dam is one of the very good Main Street daughters in the Windy Willows herd and they are proving to be very productive cows.

The day we pictured the sale bulls this guy kept on getting our attention with his muscle and good looks. He indexed 124 as a yearling ranking 1st out of the 26 bulls in his group. Kodiak did a super job and seemed to nick really well on the Main Street daughters.

Main Street came to Windy Willows as the $13,250 high selling bull from the Minburn Bull Sale. Main Street is powerfully made with plenty of bone, a big round foot and a burly masculine carriage. He is long bodied with a strong top, wide rump, and a long thick hair coat. His sons are made exactly the same way and he stamps them all. He sires more performance than any bull we have ever used and currently ranks in the top 2% of the breed for Yearling Weight EPD at +107. While the Main Street sons are cow bulls, their birth weights are very consistent. Main Street has sired over 150 calves here and we have never assisted a cow that was bred to him. Unassisted calving is expected from all our cows. His daughters are broody females, moderate framed with plenty of capacity, well attached udders and abundant milk. Excellent performance in this bull with a weaning index of 113 and yearling index of 112.

We purchased Baloo from Mark Jones to breed some heifers and he did a marvelous job. Light birth weights were very consistent and absolutely no trouble calving. Baloo 64X has developed into an impressive bull in his own right. We were pleased to find that his dam was one of our definite picks in the Geis dispersal. Unfortunately she was the pick of others too!

Just an April calf here and his dam has been a consistent producer. Two daughters are in the herd and one sold to Lawrence Olsen through the Grasslands Sale.

Ambush did a great job here. He calved easily, his sons were easy to sell and his daughters now form the core of our cowherd. He is gone now but we still have some semen and use a little every year in an effort to get more daughters. The Alliance sired dam has two daughters in the herd and another working for Lazy R Angus at Medicine Hat.

The dam, Tip Top 691N was a selection from a KBJ Celebration sale a few years ago.

This is quite a bull and his dam Blackbird 79N is one of our most highly prized cows. She is an Elite Dam and produced Blackbird 100R, the dam of Upper Cut and an awesome April bull that sold to Danny LeBrun in our 2010 sale. Last year we were surprised to find that she had calved a month earlier than expected. The only explanation we can offer is that one of our sale bulls had some extracurricular activity one night when a gate latch broke. At any rate this bull cannot be registered because we have been unable to identify his sire. His parentage may be disputable but his quality is not!

One of the very best red bulls we have ever raised. He had phenomenal performance and scanned very high for both ribeye area and %IMF (marbling). He attracted a lot of interest from commercial producers who finished their cattle for slaughter and sold as the high seller that year to Jason Dean. We were fortunate to have been able to secure some semen and still use some each year as we have not found a bull that can match him for performance and carcass traits.

This bull was the highest indexing red bull at a year with an index of 120. A maternal sister was our feature red heifer in our 2011 sale when she sold to Russ Coward.

Ambush 97Z is a very eye appealing calf with a big hip and good depth of body. He boasts an %IMF (marbling) index of 112. The dam, Daisy 225T has been one of our best red producers.

The dam, Empress 107M is an Elite Dam. She has only produced 2 daughters and both were retained in the herd. All of her sons have been sold as breeding bulls

Wizard is a bull we selected from Flying K for his foot quality and overall style and balance. We are confident that he had the best feet in their entire offering. Hanel's retained some semen for their use. He stems from the same Mission Statement line that produced the high selling Mission bulls at U-2 Ranch.

This is our daughter, Whitney's bull. He is a big calf that grew very well as he shows a weaning index of 112, ranking 2nd out of 23 and a yearling index of 113. Also note his ribeye area, third highest among our red bulls and ranking right up there with our best black bulls. The dam was selected from the Masterpiece Sale at Agribition and she has been a reliable producer for Whitney.

Here is good calf with a strong hip. Ambush was Reserve Junior Calf Champion at Agribition. His daughters have turned out to be really nice cows.

This might be the most eye appealing Wizard son. He is a chunk and he comes by it honestly as the dam was that kind when we selected her from Russ Coward at the Grassland Sale.

A good choice to breed heifers and a pretty good bull too. We used his maternal brother last year.

A daughter of Quantum was co-high selling heifer in last year's sale at $4200 to Jonathon Thomason. Once again the dam of this heifer has been designated Elite by the Canadian Angus Association.

This heifer ranked 2 out of 53 heifers at weaning with an index of 121. The dam is a daughter of the Main Event bull we purchased from KBJ.
