The first reason is education!•The turbine on campus and the data

generated and the process to date has and will continue to provide a wide variety of authentic learning opportunities.

•This will be a demonstration site for community-scale wind that is easily accessible in the midcoast.

•We want our school campus to symbolize the kind of society we want and need to become.

6 years of History•New School - Incorporated some

renewable technology (geothermal) despite this, operating costs were higher than expected. Efficiency measures taken. What else could we do? Windplanners was established.

•MET data - UMass results: wind resource is marginal but viable for this site.

•Town ordinance written

•Data challenge

•UMass third party review

Data SummaryOriginal Wind Speed (m/s)

Adjusted Wind Speed (m/s)*

Output Range (kW/yr) ***

MET Tower @ CHRHS 3.75 4.38** 88,000 -

122,000UMass Buoy 4.33 101,150

UMass Portland 4.15 75,000

UMass Augusta 5 125,000

UMass Conclusions 4.5 - 5.0 99,000 -

125,000UMass High Estimate 5.5 190,000

**The adjusted speed of 4.38 m/s was calculated by Hillary Hanson and Bill Hopwood. The original work was misfiled, so the history of this calculation is lost.

*The analysis by UMASS is viewed as the Due Diligence for this project. The Adjusted Wind Speed corrects for any inter-annual variations of wind speed and the method UMASS used is an accepted method within the industry.

***Output estimates were provided by Northern Power and UMASS.

Siting the Northwind 100

Page 12: Windplanner’s100kW Wind Turbine Project for CHRHS

The Northwind 100

•Direct Magnetic Drive - quiet and cuts in at low wind speeds.

•Warranty - 2 years

•Reputation - “Best of Breed” for this size turbine. Design life (20 yrs) based on performance in the Arctic and Carribean.

•Big jump to go smaller - there are no viable turbines in the 11 - 99 kW class.

•Location - manufactured in VT, service and initial carbon impact minimized
