CamRangerHardware
TheCamRangerdeviceisturnedonbyslidingthepowerswitch,locatedonthesideoftheunit,towardsthefrontofthedevice.Thegreenpowerlightwillilluminatewhentheunitispoweredon.Anyaddi0onalswitchpresentontheCamRangercurrentlyservesnofunc0on.
Thechargingportislocatednexttothepowerswitch.ThemalemicroBendoftheprovidedwhitechargingcordisconnectedtothisport.TheotherendofthechargingcordcanbeconnectedtoafemaleUSBportthatprovidespower,suchasacomputerorthroughtheprovidedACadapter.
Whenthedeviceischarging,anaddiIonalyellowlightwillilluminatenexttothegreenpowerlightindicaIngthatitischarging.Theyellowlightwillturnoffleavingonlythegreenpowerlightwhenitisfullycharged.
TheCamRangerbaKeryisaccessiblebyremovingtheboKomcover.TheboKomcoveristhesidewiththeCamRangerserialnumber.Simplygraspthesideedge/cornerofthecoverneartheUSBconnectorandpullbacktoremove.Toreplacethecover,firstplacethetwolowertabsintotheslotsandthensnapinthetop.
CamRangerisnotwater-resistantinanywayandshouldnotgetwet.
AblackneoprenecaseisprovidedtoassistinaKachingandsecuringtheCamRanger,notethatthispouchisnotwaterproof.Thecasehasacarabineertofacilitatehangingfromatripod,beltloop,etc.DonotjusthangtheCamRangerbythecableasitwillputstrainontheUSBconnectorsaswellaspossiblydisconnect.

BeforeaWindowscomputercanbeusedwithaCamRanger,theWindowsCamRangerapplicaIonshouldbeinstalledonthecomputer,atnoaddiIonalcosttotheuser,fromthedownloadspageontheCamRangerwebsite,www.camranger.com/downloads.Oncedownloaded,theCamRangerapplicaIonneedstoberegistered.RegistraIonrequiresInternetconnecIvity.Beforeproceeding,confirmInternetconnecIvity(donotconnecttotheCamRangernetwork).
LaunchtheCamRangerapplicaIonandthefollowingscreenwillappear.Click“OK.”

TheflowingregistraIonpop-upwillappear.IftheregistraIonpop-updoesnotappear,fromthe“Help”tabontheWindowsCamRangermenubarclick“Register,”andthefollowingscreenwillappear.

Enterthe8-characterCamRangerserialnumber.TheserialnumberislocatedbothontheboKomofthebackcoveraswellasabovethebaKeryunderneaththebackcover.Note:theserialnumbercontainsonlyleKersandNOnumbers.
Pressthe“Register”buKontoregister.AmessageboxwillappearindicaIngregistraIonwassuccessfulandtheWindowscanbeusedwiththeCamRanger.ExittheapplicaIonandthenproceedwiththesetupprocessasdetailedbelowintheCamRangerSetupsecIon.IfregistraIonfails,confirmInternetconnecIvityandtheCamRangerserialnumberbeforecontacIngsupport@CamRanger.comforassistance.

CamRangerSetupPowerontheCamRangerandconfirmallfourlightsbrieflyappear.TheCamRangerwilltakeapproximately30secondsunIlitisfullyiniIalized.
ThefirstImetheuserconnectstotheCamRangerfromaWindowscomputer,thecomputerneedstoberegistered.SeetheCamRangerRegistraIonsecIonabove.
Onceregistered,connecttotheCamRangerWiFinetworkonthecomputer.ThenetworknamewillbeCamRanger-###,withthelastthreecharactersmatchingthelast3charactersoftheCamRanger’sserialnumber.Enterthenetworkpassword,whichisthefull8charactersoftheCamRanger’sserialnumber.ThepasswordMUSTBEENTEREDINALLCAPS.
ConnecttheCamRangertothecamerawiththeprovidedblackUSBcable.(Note:unitspurchasedthroughretailerswillhaveaUSBminicable,whichwillworkwithmostcameras.AfewselectNikonsuseadifferentcable,whichmaybepurchasedseparatelyorthecablethatcamewiththecamerawillalsowork)ThemaleAendisinsertedintotheUSBportattheendoftheCamRanger,andtheotherendisconnectedtotheUSBportofthecamera.Thenensurethecameraisturnedon.Whenthecameraisconnectedandturnedon,thegreenlightclosesttotheedgeoftheCamRangerdevicewilllight.
LaunchtheCamRangerWindowsapplicaIon.TheapplicaIonwillconnecttotheCamRangerandtheuserwillbeabletocontrolthecamera.ToaKempttomanuallyiniIateaconnecIon,ontheWindowsCamRangermenubar,click“ConnecIon”andthen“Connect.”

RecentThumbnails
• Asimagesarecaptured,thethumbnailsareautomaIcallydownloadedanddisplayedalongthetopofthescreen.Thethumbnailsmaybescrolledlefandrightwhenmorearedownloadedthancanfit.
• Athumbnailmaybeselectedtoviewthecorrespondingimage.Theimageisdownloadedanddisplayedinthemainimageview.Thecurrentlyselectedthumbnailisindicatedwithalightgreybox.
• WhenbothaJPGandRAWfileformatiscaptured,onlytheJPGthumbnailisdisplayed.• Asmallred“R”iconontheupperrightofthethumbnailindicatesthatitisaRAWimage.Asmallgreen“T”indicatesTIFF,whilenoiconisusedtoindicateJPGformaKedimages.
• Note:onlythumbnailsforimagescapturedwithinthecurrentCamRangersessionwillbedisplayed.
MainImageViewLiveviewandcapturedimagesaredisplayedwithinthemainimageview.
LiveViewImages
ToiniIateliveview,clickonthe“eye”buKonlocatedwithinthecameraacIoncontrolsontheboKomrightoftheapplicaIonscreen.Inliveview,theimageonthescreenisautomaIcallyupdatedasliveviewimagesstreamin.TheexactframepersecondrateisverymuchdependentonCamRangerWiFisignalstrength,thecamera,andtheWindowsspecs.However,assumingagoodconnecIon,liveviewframeratewillbeabout7–18fps.
Wheninliveview,themainimageviewmaybeclickedoncetofocusatthatpoint.NotethatforCanoncameras,theouteredgesoftheimagecannotbefocusedupon.Doubleclickingwillzoomintheviewingwindowanddoubleclickingagainreturnstoregularsize.
CanoncamerascandisplaytheliveviewimageonthecameraandWindowsandallowtheusertotriggerimageswiththecamerabyacIvaIngthecamera’sliveviewbuKona"erstarIngliveontheCamRangerapplicaIon.NikoncamerasdonotallowanycontrolofthephysicalcamerawhileliveviewisacIve.
CapturedImages
Capturedimagescanbedisplayedinthemainimageviewinoneoftwoways,byselecIngathumbnailinthethumbnailssecIonoftheapplicaIonorthroughtheAuto-ViewImagesfeature.The

Auto-ViewImagefeatureisusefulwhencapturingimagesfromthecameraandusingtheWindowsapplicaIonforimagedisplay.Whenthisfeatureisselected,pictureswillautomaIcallydisplayinthemainimageviewscreen.ThisfeaturecanbeturnedonoroffbyselecIng“View”ontheWindowsCamRangermenubarandthen“CamRangerPreferences.”FormoreinformaIonaboutthisfeature,refertotheWindowsCamRangerMenuBar:Se6ng-PreferencessecIonfoundonpage19.
Whenathumbnailisselectedforviewing,theimagewilldisplayedonthemainimageviewandcanzoomedinat50%,100%,200%,orfittoscreenbyselecIngthemagnificaIonofinterestbelowtheimage.Theimagecanthenbepannedusingthemouse.
Ahistogramoftheimagemaybeviewedfromthe“Data”tabasdescribedintheAdvancedTab-DatasecIonfoundonpage9.Turningonthehistogramwillgenerateahistogramforcapturesimages.
Imagesdisplayedinthemainviewaresavedbydefaulttothephotodirectoryonthecomputer.ForfurthersavingopIons,includingtheabilitytoautomaIcallysaveallpictures,refertotheWindowsCamRangerMenuBar:Se6ngs-PreferencessecIonfoundonpage19.
Toviewtheimagesonthecamera’smemorycardselect“View”ontheWindowsCamRangerMenuBarandthen“CardContents.”Anewwindowwillappeardisplayingthumbnailsoftheimagesonthecamera’sremovablemedia.Double-clickingathumbnailwilldownloadanddisplaytheimagewithinthemainimageview.AddiIonalfeaturesfordownloadingordeleIngimagesarealsoavailable.ForfurtherinformaIonaboutthecardcontents,refertotheWindowsCamRangerMenuBar-CardContentssecIonfoundonpage17.

AdvancedTabsTherearefourtabsprovidingadvancedinformaIonorcontrols:Data,Focus,Timer,andHDR.ATripodorStackShottabwillappearasafifhtapiftheCamRangerisbeingusedwiththeCamRangerPTHubandasupportedtripodhead(theMP-360,Bescor,orHague)orStackShot.
DataThedatatabshowsanRGBhistogramandmeta-dataassociatedwiththecapturedimageinthemainimageview.Thefollowingmeta-dataisprovided:
• ShuKerSpeed• Aperture• MegaPixels(Notethisisnotfilesize,butimageresoluIon)
• ISO• MeteringMode• ExposureCompensaIonValue
Withinliveviewthehistogramcanbetoggledonoroff.Ofnote,thehistogramwillreducetheliveviewframerate.
Focus
Thefocustabisonlyenabledduringliveviewandprovidesadvancedfocusingcontrols.
FocusAdjustTherearetwosetsofbuKonstomovethelens’focalplanenearerorfurtherfromthecamera.EachsethasthreebuKonswithdifferentsizedarrowstospecifyalarge,medium,orsmallstepinfocus.TapthebuKontomovethefocusbyasingleincrement,holdingdownthebuKonwillhavenoaffect.
FocusStackingFocusstackingisaprocessoftakingmulIplecaptureswithslightchangesinfocusandthenpostprocessingthemtoenhancethedepthoffield.Thiscontrolallowstheusertosetthefocusstepsizetotakebetweenineachshotandthenumberofshotstotake.Eachfocusstepwillmovethefocalplanefurtherfromthecamera.Sotheuserwillwanttosetthefocustothenearestplanedesiredtobeinfocusandstartthestackingprocessfromthere.Iftoofewcapturesweretaken,theprocesscanberestartedfromwheretheiniIalstackingended.Note:postprocessingoftheimagesisnotdonewithintheCamRangerapplicaIon.

Timer
TheImertaballowstheuseoftheCamRangerasanintervalometeraswellasspecifyingexposureImeswhenthecameraisinbulbmode.
TimeLapse• TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniIaldelaybeforethefirstshot,thenumberofshotstotake,andthedelayinbetweeneachshot.
• Aferconfiguringthesehngs,pressthe“Start”buKontobegintheintervalometerprocess.
• TheintervalometercommandsarestoredontheCamRangerdevice,theWindowscomputerdoesnotneedtoremainonorconnectedoncetheintervalomitercommandisiniIated.
• The“ShotDelay”shouldnotbeusedforprecisionIming,parIcularlywhenthedelayisonlyafewsecondsorless.
• Onceanintervalometersequenceisbegun,theImertabwillprovideacountdownofthecurrentImelapseaswellasabuKontocanceltheImelapse.
Bulb• TheBulbcontrolsareonlyenabledwhenthecameraisinbulbmodeandthecamerasupportsremotebulbshots.
• TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniIaldelaybeforethefirstshotandthelengthoftheexposure.
• AferconfiguraIon,pressthe“Start”buKontobeginthebulbprocess.• ThebulbcommandsarestoredontheCamRangerdeviceandtheWindowsdoesnotneedtoremainonorconnected.
HDR
The“HDR”,orAdvancedBrackeIng,tabcanbeusedtogenerateaseriesofphotoswithvaryingexposures.
• AdvancedBrackeIngisonlyenabledwhenthecameraisinManualexposuremode.
• ThePropertyfieldspecifiesthecamerapropertytobevaried.TherearethreeopIons:ShuKerSpeed,Aperture,andISO.
• TheIniIalDelayfieldspecifiestheamountofdelay,ifany,totakebeforebeginningthebrackeIngsequence.
• TheiniIalvaluefortheselectedpropertyissetwiththeStartValuefield.
• Thetotalnumberofimagestocaptureisspecifiedbythe

NumberofShotsfield.• ThepossibleStepSizevaluesareupto3stopsandspecifybyhowmanystopstovarytheexposurebetweeneachcapture.
• ThevalidvaluesfortheNumberofShotsareautomaIcallydeterminedbasedonthevaluesspecifiedforStartValueandStepSize.Forexampleastepsizeof1/3stopswillallowmoreshotsthanastepsizeof3stops.

Capture• The“Capture”buKoniniIatesthecameratrigger.TheexactcamerabehaviorisdependentonthecameraandcameraproperIes,mostimportantlythecapturemode.
• Formostcapturemodes,suchassingle,Imer,orquiet,thebuKonperformstheimagecaptureasexpected.Itshouldbenotedthatforsomecameras,advancedmodessuchasremoteorImerwillbehaveassinglecapturemode.
• ConInuouscapturemodediffersbetweenNikonandCanon.• Nikon:AferselecIngaconInuousdrivemodeadialogisdisplayedallowingtheusertoselectthenumberofimagestocapture.Whenthe“Capture”buKonispressed,thatnumberofimageswillbecaptured.
• Canon:WheninaconInuousmode,pressingandholdingthe“Capture”buKonbehavesinthesamewayaspushingthephysicaltriggeronthecamera.
• Itisnotedthattherecanbeaveryslightlagbetweenthepressingofthe“Capture”buKonandtheimagecapture.ThedelaycanbemorepronouncedwhileliveviewisacIve.ForImecriIcalapplicaIons,aremotetrigger,suchasanRFtrigger,canbeusedincombinaIonwiththeCamRanger.
LiveView• TheliveviewtogglebuKonisusedtoturnliveviewonandoff.• Whenliveviewison,themainimageviewisupdatedwithliveviewimages.• Note:runningliveviewisrelaIvelyintensiveandtheremaybeslightperformancelagsinotherareas.
MovieMode• ThemovietogglebuKonisusedtoturnliveviewonandoff,butwithinmoviemode.• Whenmoviemodeison,themainimageviewisupdatedwiththeliveimages.• The“Capture”buKonchangesto“Record”andpressingthe“Record”buKonwillstartandthenstoptherecordingofamovie.

Auto/ManualFocusToggle• TheAF/MFFocustogglebuKonallowstheusertochangethefocusingbetweenautoandmanualwithouthavingtophysicallyadjustthecamera.

• ThisAF/MFadjustmentisnotpossibleforallcamerasinallmodes.Forexample,someNikoncamerasarerequiredtobeconnectedin“PC”mode,whichisaccessiblebyselecIng“ConnecIon”ontheWindowsCamRangermenubarfollowedbyclicking“PC”.
• Aferanytouchorincrementalfocusingwhileinliveview,thefocusmodewillautomaIcallyaKempttoswitchtomanualfocussuchthattheuserspecifiedfocusisnotoverriddenbyautofocusuponcapture.

• CamRangerConnecIon:Astatedependent“Connect”or“Disconnect”buKonisavailabletotheuserasatroubleshooIngopIontoavoidclosingtheapplicaIoninthecaseofconnecIonproblems.
• NikonConnecIonMode• PC:PCmodeallowsmorecontroloverproperIeswithintheCamRanger;however,certainproperIeschangedarenotmaintainedwhentheCamRangerisdisconnected,andchangingsehngsonthephysicalcameraarenotrecognized.AddiIonally,thecameracannotbephysicallycontrolledsuchastriggeringimageswiththecamera’sshuKer.

• Camera:Allowsthecameratobephysicallyusedasnormal;however,notallproperIeswillbeenabledwithintheCamRanger.TheCamRangerapplicaIonmustbesettoCameramodetoallowphysicallytriggeringfromthecamera.

Anynumberofthumbnailscanbeselectedbypressingathumbnail,orallmaybeselectedbypressing“SelectAll”attheboKomofthewindow.Selectedthumbnailswillhaveagreyborderaroundthem(asseenabove,2imagesareselected).AferselecIngthumbnailstheymayeitherbedeletedorsaved.The“Delete”buKonatthelowerlefwilldeletetheassociatedimagesoftheselectedthumbnailsfromthecamera’sremovablemediawhenselected.The“Save”buKonatthelowerrightwillsaveallassociatedimagesoftheselectedthumbnailstotheimagedirectoryspecifiedinthepreferences.Imagesaresavedregardlessofformat.
Imageswithinthecardcontentsviewcanbeviewedbydoubleclickingontheimage.Theimagewillthenappearinthemainimageviewwindow.
Notethatthethumbnailsarepresentedinchronologicalorderbeginningwiththemostrecent.However,forNikontheyaregroupedfirstbyformat,suchthatallJPG’swillbelisted,thenTIFF’s,andfinallyRAWimages.
ControlsWhenthe“Control”viewisturnedon,thecamerasehngsandimagecapturingopIonsareontherighthandsideoftheapplicaIon.TurningtheControlsviewoff,willhidetheseopIons.ThumbnailsoftheimagescapturedwithintheCamRangersessionwillconInuetoappearontheupperporIonofthescreen,themainimageviewwillshowlivevieworcapturedimages.

Commands• Dependingonthecameraandthemode,capturecanfailifthecamerafailstoacquirefocus.• IntervalometerandBulbcommandsarestoredontheCamRangerhardwaresuchthattheWindowscomputerdoesnotneedtoremainonandconnected.
