ThisoperatingsystemmarksabigchangeinthewayMicrosoftdoesthingsandnotbecauseit’sdrasticallydifferentfromWindows7orWindows8.1.

Infact,thoseofyouwhothoughtWindows8wasn’tverymouseandkeyboard-friendlywillbepleasantlysurprisedwithWindows10.ButthisOSstillkeepsthebestfeaturesofWindows8aswell.Sowhat’sthebigdifference?

Windows10isafreeupgradeforthoseusingWindows7,Windows8,andWindows8.1–thefirsttime

Microsofthasofferedmillionsofpeoplefreeupgradestoanewoperatingsystem.TheupgradefromWindows8to8.1wasfree,butthatwasmorelikeinstallingaservicepack.Windows10isadifferentoperatingsystem.

Butdon’tworry,Windows10won’toverwriteyourdocuments,filesandprograms.Windows10isalsodesignedtobepartofwhatMicrosoftcallsOneWindows–asingleoperatingsystemwhereyoucanaccessprogramsandfilesacrossawidevarietyofdevices.Usingtheiruniversalapps,youcanopenandeditthesameWorddocumentonyourPC,WindowsPhone,TabletorevenyourXboxOnegameconsole.You’llevenbeabletoplaysomeXboxconsolegamesonyourcomputer,phoneortablet.YoucouldevendownloadappsforyourAndroidphoneandtabletoriPhoneandiPadthatwouldallowyoutoworkonthatsameWorddocumentandsaveittoyourfreeOneDriveCloudStorage,whereyoucanpickrightupwhereyouleftoff.

AnotherbigchangewithWindow10isthattherewillbeautomaticupdates.Sothere’slesschanceofyoumissinganimportantsecurityupdateorbugfix.

WhyisMicrosoftofferingthisupgradeforfree?It’sintheirbestinteresttohaveasmanypeopleaspossibleonthesameoperatingsystem.Atonepointthecompanyhad4separateoperatingsystemstosupport:WindowsXP,WindowsVista,Windows7andWindows8&8.1.That’scalledfragmentationanditmakesnotonlysecurity,butthedevelopmentofnewappsandservicesverydifficult.Withthemajorityofusersononeoperatingsystem,it’smucheasiertokeepthingssecureaswellasdevelopnewproductsandservices.Appleoperatesmuchthesameway.Theymaketheirmoneyfromrelativelyexpensivedevicesandofferfreeupgradestotheiroperatingsystemsthatmostpeoplechoosetotake.

Microsoftisonlyofferingthisfreeupgradeforoneyear.So,youneedtoupgradebyJuly29,2016togetitforfree.Thatdoesn’tmeanthatthoseofyouwhohaveupgradedwillhavetostartpayingin2016.Yourupgradeisgoodforthelifeofyourcomputer,justlikewhenyouinstallanOSfromadiscordownload.Butthosewhochoosenottoupgradebythenwillhavetopayaround$100iftheywanttoupgradetoWindows10.
