Summer in Bloom!

JUNE YARD OF THE MONTH

And the winner is…..11913 Palmetto Shores. Beautiful trees and bright-colored shrubs bring out the best

in this lovely landscape. Flowerbeds are crisp and clean with a large variety of well-placed flowers and plants. A rich, green lawn finishes out the setting and makes this home picture perfect. Congratulations to our winners. The committee appreciates all of the homeowners who make our subdivision beautiful. And the winner is…..10318 Fountain Shores.

Wow! The choice was very hard this month. But the final decision was to home owners Kaur Raminder and Sukheuider Singh of 10318 Fountain Shores. This immaculate stucco property boast of green shurbs, Sega palms, blooming knock-out roses, and two large windmill palm trees. In the flower beds you will find variegated grass is mixed with blooming ferns, sprinkled with white, purple and red periwinkles and surrounded by a couple of varieties of low growing evergreen shrubs. The grass is a carpet of deep dark green. Mowed to perfection, edged and trimmed with walkways clean. A very neat appearance from the street view.

JULY YARD OF THE MONTH

June-July-August Yard of the Month homes are featured in this addition to show you the beauty that surrounds us all summer long. If you are prone to being busy and just driving in and out of our neighborhood you most likely have missed some really great yards. The choices for YOM this year has been tough. Take a look at these three homes and notice the summer in bloom. Take some hints from these home owners and make a list of flowers to plant in your yard next year and be one of our summer “Yard of the Month Winners”. Some good suggestions are flowers that tolerate the South Texas Sun. Since South Texas sits just north of the Mexican-United

States border, we have a dessert like climate. The sun is exceedingly intense in the region, regularly reaching temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course you know that, you live here, but do you know what kind of flowers species can tolerate our climate. There are several varieties of flowering plants native to South Texas, which makes them ideal for gardens. You could say these are the plant’em and forget’em plants because they take little or no care. Great for busy families or part-time Gardner who wants a flowering yard during the summer time.

Windermere LakesUnder the left yard palm you can see Snap dragons that should

be long gone in this summer heat but these little guys are proudly standing and loving the soil so much they have decided to hang around to provide a few more weeks of beauty. Good soil and proper watering is important in the Texas heat. Suggest everyone mix in a bag of potting soil mix and a bag of garden mix to loosen the clay most of us have in our yards. The mixture will hold the moisture and give those thirsty plants the nourishment they need until the next watering.

Before I close on this property notice the red and white alternating stone work how it compliments this yard in bloom and the home’s exterior. This shows you that you can be creative and all colors don’t have to match. With everything neatly groomed and manicured it’s the overall look that blends together to make the perfect picture. Thanks to these wonderful home owners for adding such beauty to our neighborhood..

Congratulations, Congratulations, Congratulations to Danny Jutzlau homeowner of 10014 Lakeside Gables. This beautiful home boast of striking landscapes along with a mixture of lush green, red, and earth tone colors. As you gaze at the yard from the street you see lush thick green carpet grass, trimmed green hedges all bordered by red and green elephant ear caladiums. Breathe taking!

In the center of the yard stands a large water feature sculpture of fish standing in a bird bath circled by more elephant ear caladiums and earth tone colors of brown and tan pebble beach rock. Emphasis on cheerful -makes this red brick home accented with white quarry brick a very happy place. Flower beds of hibiscus, alliums of pink, purple and blue flowers compliment one Sega palm and two miniature palms along with several types of meadow grasses indigenous to the area. As you continue to walk up the driveway you stole under a live oak tree to a designer stone walkway that directs you to a hall way of more green hedges and caladiums. A front door designed to show warmth, welcome and beauty.

And the winner is…..11014 Lakeside Gables. This homeowner says he ordered over 400 caladium bulbs this year

to add as much beauty as possible to his neighborhood. Danny loves the neighborhood and all its surrounding beauty and just wanted to give back. His love for the area shows all the way around his home. From the side street, Pebble Creek Drive you can view the back of his home from the visitors dock area. Views include a low-maintenance planting bed filled with lots of perennials. Large Hibiscus plants, plus euonymus, liriope, spirea, astilbe and sedum plants. Plants surround a covered patio entertainment deck area that creates the illusion of an exotic getaway. Layers upon layers of tropical plants, ceiling fans mixed with tile and stone. Show this owners’ love of entertaining. Immediately off the deck is a sunny patio flanked by more planting beds filled with annuals. Truly a garden paradise and a soothing place to be enjoyed. This yard leaves you with a sigh of peace as you read a sign placed gently in the flower bed that says it all. “Everything Grows with Love”. And I agree this yard is full of love.

Windermere LakesGREENTHREAD

Thelesperma filifolium, commonly called green thread, is a native wildflower of South Texas. Reaching a height of 26 inches, the flowers are seen along roadsides. Revered for its bright yellow blooms and hardy growing nature, the plant prefers full sun and thrives in the hot sun. Green thread blooms through March and June and often flowers come up through the fall. This plant can easily be purchased on line, or from a native plant nursery that sell sprouted versions of the plant.

LAZYDAISY A n o t h e r n a t i v e S o u t h

Texas plant is Aphanostephus skirrhobasis better known as the Lazydaisy. A wildflower that grows 2 feet high and blooms through February and November and is nearly and all-year flowering plant. The lazy daisy gets its name from its blooming habit. All

WINE CUP FLOWER Callirgoe involucrate, the wine

cup flower, is a flowering perennial of South Texas. The red wine color of the flower and its wine cup shape lends to its common name. The flower requires full sun, and

blooms close until midday, when the sun is strongest, giving the plant a lazy blooming appearance. Lazy daisy is best grown from the seed. Though considered an annual, it often replants its self from seed droppings in late fall and winter. The blooms are white with a yellow interior.

Windermere Lakesits growth is vine like, spreading out 2 to 3 feet. Best grown from seed, the plant is hardy and should be spaced 3 feet from other plant species. Trim back at the end of summer for improved fall growth.

THE TEXAS BINDWEED The Texas bindweed, Convolvulus equitans, is an indigenous wild flower from South Texas. A perennial, this vine like plant produces white flowers with a deep purple center. Able to grow 8 feet from its rood base, the plant can overwhelm other plants. Do not plant other species within the growing range of the Texas Bindweed. Plant in full sun; the blooms appear nearly all year and are very drought tolerant. The Texas Bindweed, like most types of wild flowers, grows best from seed. Planted next to a fence can give you lots of privacy as it will bind to the fence in short order and then bind to itself over and over again.

WAX BEGONIA The heat and drought tolerant

was begonia is a favorite of Texas gardeners. Attractive mounds of glossy leave grow 6 to 15 inches tall and 6 to 15 inches wide. Native to Brazil, this annual can survive light frost and thrive year-round when mild winters occur. Many cultivars of was begonia

exist, which offer gardeners a myriad of foliage and bloom choices. Varieties include leaves in green, chocolate, bronze, burgundy or dark red with blossoms in shades of white, pink, rose and red. Wax begonias enjoy partial or full sun and are drought resistant, although horticulturists recommend mulching plants to help retain moisture. This plant is a vigorous bloomer from June to early frost. Was begonias are easily propagated by seed or stem cuttings. No need to deadhead wax begonias because they quickly drop old blooms. In addition, they are pest and disease resistant.

GOLD STAR ESPERANZA The Gold Star Esperanza is a

perennial shrub native to San Antonio, Texas. While frequently grown as a landscape shrub, this plant excels as a tropical container plant, much like a hibiscus. It loves heat and full sun and is known as a Texas Superstar. This shrub was named by the horticulturist at

RED CALADIUMS It’s a pity caladium are rarely thought of as houseplants, these plants

are almost unparalleled for their foliage. They have large arrow-shaped and paper-thin leaves that come in a striking array of colors and patterns. A mass of caladium is an explosion of whites, greens, reds and pinks…mottled, veined and striped. But these plants have a few drawbacks. They are tuberous plants that only grow foliage from spring to autumn, they require very high humidity, and they have absolutely no cold tolerance. They grow in full sun or partial shade. But even under the best conditions, caladiums will only last a few months before their leaves start to die back and the plant goes dormant again. Use masses of them as striking summer accents and conversation pieces. When they die back, save the tublers in a bag and replant next year for another show.

Texas A & M University’s Department of Agriculture.This shrub grows 3 to 4 feet tall and exhibits attractive green

foliage and fragrant yellow bell-shaped blossoms from spring until frost. To encourage blooming, botanists advise gardeners to remove the clusters of seed pods, which look like green beans. New plants will grow from the dried seeds supplied by the pods, providing easy propagation.
