The word safety describes a firearms trigger blockmechanism, sear block mechanism, hammer blockmechanism or firing pin block mechanism.Mechanical safeties are designed to place yourfirearm in a safer status, and no guarantee can be madethat the firearm will not fire even if the safety is inthe on safe position. Mechanical safeties merely aidsafe gun handling and are no excuse for pointing yourfirearms muzzle in an unsafe direction. See Operation

of the Safety on page 10 for instructions on theoperation of this firearms safety.

Remember, safe gun handling does not stop with yourfirearms mechanical safety devices, it starts there.Always treat this firearm with the respect due aloaded, ready-to-fire firearm.

Some firearms do not have a mechanical safety. Many target firearms, lever-action firearms and pistolsdo not have manual safety mechanisms. Therefore it

is critical to read and understand the owners manualfor every firearm which explains the safe operation ofthe firearm.

Do not use unorthodox shootingmethods that could cause the rearward travel of theslide or bolt of a firearm to contact your eyes, face orhands. Always keep a safe distance between themuzzle of your firearm and any persons nearby, as

muzzle blast, debris and ejecting shells could inflictserious injury.

Always wear eye protection when disassembling andcleaning any firearm to prevent the possibility ofsprings, spring-tensioned parts, solvents or other

    GenerAl Description

No pump shotgun is faster than the Winchester Super XPump. Inertia from recoil forces assists the slide rearward, making it much easier to begin the pumping motion.Youll find that you will complete the pumping actionforward quickly and in an instant youve cycled a shell andare ready for a second shot. Speed like this makes a bigdifference, allowing you to set up for a follow-up shot

more quickly and concentrate on your target, not just onpumping the shotgun.

With the Super X Pumps rotary bolt design, the lugsengage directly in the recesses in the barrel extension.

This is a strong, consistent and reliable lockup design.Every design feature of the Super X Pump works togetherto make what many consider the most reliable pumpshotgun on the market today.

    GenerAl operAtion

The Super X Pump is a pump-action shotgun that allowsyou to load a shell by cycling the action to eject the emptyshell, and move an unfired shell from the loaded magazinetube to the chamber. This can be repeated until the

magazine is empty. A single shell can also be inserted intothe chamber manually.

The Super X Pump breaks down into two pieces (receiver/stock assembly and barrel) for cleaning and storage.

Prior to using live ammunition, familiarize yourselfthoroughly with the operating instructions in thisowners manual. Get accustomed to the feel of your newfirearm and know the forces required to operate theaction. Learn how to pull the trigger and, above all, knowthe location and operation of the safety. Procedures fordisassembly and operation of various components areoutlined later in this owners manual. Please read andstudy them thoroughly.

    nomenclAture

In conventional firearm terminology the position andmovement of firearm parts are described as they occurwith the firearm horizontal and in the normal firing

position: i.e., the muzzle is forward or in front; thebuttstock is rearward or to the rear; the trigger isdownward or underneath; the rib is upward or on top.For general parts nomenclature, refer to Figure 1, page 6.

The Super X Pump is also shown disassembled to theextent necessary in order to follow the instructionscontained in this owners manual (Figure 11, page 26).Figure 2, on pages 8 and 9, covers the general features andbenefits of the Super X Pump design.

Throughout this owners manual the action refers to themechanism of this shotgun which loads and secures theshells in the chamber.

    seriAl number

The serial number is located on the left side of thereceiver, just above the trigger guard. Record the serialnumber at the front of this book for future reference.

Be especially careful when cleaning firearms withcamouflage, Dura-Touch Armor Coating and otherspecial finishes. Always prevent these surfaces from

coming in contact with cleaning solvents, barrelscrubbers and other strong chemicals. It is preferable toclean these surfaces with a light gun oil containing nosolvents or with a damp cloth and mild dish soap (be sureto keep water out of the action). When cleaning yourfirearms bore and action, protect the external finishesfrom any contact with chemicals used. Also, avoid anycontact between external finishes and other strongchemicals like those found in DEET-containing insectrepellents, sunscreens, etc. Damage to camouflage,

Some metal parts of your new Super X Pump have beencoated at the factory with a rust preventative compound. Before using your Super X Pump, clean the anti-rustcompound from the inside of the barrel, receiver, boltmechanism and the action/chamber areas. A high quality, lightweight gun oil should be used to remove thiscompound and to give your new firearm its firstlubrication. Clean the barrel using a cleaning rod andpatch as explained under Cleaning and Maintenance

Suggestions found on page 23 in this owners manual.

Before beginning assembly of your Super X Pump youshould first wipe the mechanism clean and apply a fewdrops of quality oil on the indicated surfaces (Figure 3).

Avoid applying too much oil. Only a light film is necessary.Excessive oil should be wiped off, especially in coldweather.

The most certain way to bulge or rupture a shotgun barrelis to load a smaller gauge shell into a larger gauge chamber. The smaller gauge shell will not fall completely throughthe barrel; its rim is caught by the front of a larger gaugechamber or at the larger gauges choke. Your shotgun willmisfire (with the chamber appearing to be empty). It isthen possible to load the correct gauge shell behind thesmaller gauge shell. If the shotgun is then fired, the resultwill be a so-called 12-20, 20-28 or 28-.410 burst whichcan cause extensive damage to your shotgun and possibleserious injury to you and others.

We can assume no responsibility for incidents which occurthrough the use of shells of nonstandard dimension orthose developing pressures in excess of SAAMI (SportingArms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute)established standards.

All current 12 and 20 gauge Super X Pumps have a 3"chamber and are designed to shoot all factory 2" and 3"Field and Target loads. The barrel can safely handle bothlead and steel shot. Special rifled choke tubes are designedfor shooting sabot-type slugs.

    mAGAzine cApAcitY

With the magazine three-shot adapter (plug) removed, your shotgun holds four 2" or 3" shells in the magazine.SXP models with an extended magazine hold six 2" or 3"shells in the magazine. At a range or other suitableshooting location, load the magazine to full capacity toverify the number of shells.

Remember, total capacity includes an additional shell inthe chamber in addition to a full magazine.

All Super X Pump shotgun barrels (except Defendermodels) are threaded to accept the Invector-Plus choketube system. WinChoke, Standard Invector andInvector-Plus tubes are not interchangeable. Confirm thechoke system of your shotgun by looking on the right sideof the barrel where the specifications are inscribed, wherethe choke markings are normally located.

The constriction of each choke tube is indicated twice onthe choke tube: on the side of the tube, and indicatedwith a notch code on the top rim of the tube. Theincluded universal choke tube wrench is used to removeand install choke tubes.

Invector-Plus and Standard Invector choke tubes arecompatible with factory ammunition that has been

loaded in compliance with SAAMI specifications, including magnum lead and steel shot loads, sabots andshotgun slug loads.

Replacement and additional tubes and wrenches areavailable from your Winchester Rifle and Shotgunsdealer, or by contacting the Winchester RepeatingArms Customer Service Department. See page 30for contact information.

choke tube selectionTo help you choose the correct choke tube for eachhunting and shooting situation, all Invector-Plus choketubes are inscribed on the side with the patterns theyproduce with both lead and steel shot. Each Invector tubealso has notches in the top rim of the tube (Figure 11).

These notches are a code to allow you to determine thechoke designation while the tube is installed. Rimnotches refer specifically to lead shot. Use the charts onpage 21 to cross-reference from lead to steel, anddetermine the appropriate tubes for your ammunition andhunting/shooting situation.

Several choke tubes are supplied with your shotgun. The choke tubes listed are also available as accessories.Remember, WinChoke, Standard Invector andInvector-Plus tubes are not interchangeable. 1. Open the action and place your shotgun on a table orother safe/secure location. Protect the finish with ragsor other padding.

    3. Clean all oil, grease or dirt from the receiver top andfrom the scope base parts.

    4. Position your shotgun in the upright position with the

    top of the receiver upward.

    5. Remove all four filler screws from the top of thereceiver using a very small, thin-bladed gunsmithing-type screwdriver.

    6. Pre-position the bases on the receiver top to determinethe best orientation of the bases. Most bases havetransverse grooves cut into them that are offset fromthe middle. These are the grooves that the crossbolts inyour scope rings will pass through. The grooves areoffset to allow you to position the bases to fit thedesign/length of your scope and the placement ofthe scope front to back for proper eye relief. Placeboth grooves to the rear, both to the front, or onein each direction, depending on your scope anddesired position.

    7. Once you know which configuration you will use, insert the screws through the bases and screw theminto the receiver top using the correct wrench orscrewdriver (usually a 3/32" hex wrench). You mustuse screws which are at least 11/32" in length to ensureproper thread engagement.

Many gunsmiths find it helpful to use a drop ofserviceable thread locking compound to assure thescrews stay tight. Make sure the compound does notget into the action. Be careful to assure that thethreads of each screw engage properly in the threads inthe receiver to prevent stripping the threads in thealloy receiver.

    8. Tighten the screws snugly, but do not overtighten.

    9. Mount your scope rings and scope as outlined in theinstructions supplied with your scope rings and/orscope. Always make sure you have the proper eye relief.

Your Super X Pump will function better and more reliablyover a longer period of time if it is properly maintainedand kept clean. You should clean your shotgun after everyday of shooting, and more often if it becomes excessivelydirty. The barrel should be cleaned and the action wipedclean and oiled after every day of shooting.

Normal maintenance can be accomplished with the barrelstill attached to the receiver (oiling and wiping down).More careful cleaning requires removal of the barrel fromthe receiver (cleaning the barrel). A complete cleaningrequires removal of the bolt and trigger group.

If you encounter a function problem (tight action whenworking the forearm) be sure to give your firearm a

thorough cleaning to see if it solves the problembefore seeking the services of our service facility ora qualified gunsmith.

    1. Place the safety in the on safe position. Open theaction and inspect the chamber and magazine to make

certain they do not contain any shells. Keep themuzzle pointed in a safe direction.

2 Remove the barrel as explained under Disassemblyon page 12.

    3. Inspect the bore from both ends for leading and plasticresidue that often remain in the bores from the shotcups in modern shells. Leading and plastic residue willappear as longitudinal streaks and are usually morepredominant near the muzzle and just forward of the

chamber. A normal amount of either is common andnot serious.

    4. If leading or plastic residue seems excessive you canremove it by brushing the bore with a brass brush.Soak the brush or spray the bore with a powdersolvent first. Scrub until clean. To prevent bristlesfrom breaking off, push the brush fully through thebarrel each time before pulling it back through.

With both the trigger group and boltassembly removed, it is easy to wipe out any debris ormoisture that sometimes accumulates in the receiver.

The trigger group should be removed before you attemptto remove the bolt assembly.

    1. Make sure the firearm is completely unloaded asexplained previously in this owners manual.

    2. Cycle the action by sliding the forearm rearward and

then forward. This puts the hammer in the cockedposition. Place the safety in the on safe position.

    3. If the barrel assembly has been removed, always besure to replace the magazine cap on the end of themagazine tube to prevent accidental disengagementof the magazine spring retainer.

    4. Place your firearm with the trigger guard facing up ona suitable surface that will protect the receiver finish

and stock.5. Remove the trigger guard pin by pushing it out from

the left side of the receiver, the side opposite theejection port. Any sturdy pushing tool that is smallerin diameter than the pin and will not mar the finishis acceptable. Make sure you can maintain a goodgrip on the pushing tool and on your shotgun whileyou push.

    6. Push the pin through sufficiently until it can be

grasped with your fingers. Pull it the rest of the wayout. If it cannot be removed with fingers, make sureyour pushing tool or punch has a diameter smallenough so that it will push the pin completely throughwithout the tool damaging the hole.
