“A classic religious theme - the Pieta - is masterfully translated by Wim Van Aalst to a dramatic contemporary event: a grieving mother holding the body of her daughter. The simplicity of the composition and the contrast between color and black and white, emphasize the dramatic content of his work. At the same time, the measured sobriety can be interpreted as in indirect reference to Buddhism.The work’s title (Unnecessary Death) refers to the Buddhist Falun Gong in China, a peaceful spiri-tual group that is persecuted by the regime. Practitioners adhere to the tenets truthfulness, benevo-lence and forbearance, but they are outlawed by the Chinese government. Wim Van Aalst succeeds to fuse his humanitarian engagement and love of classical painting to a powerful and wonderful unity in this grippingly beautiful and balanced work, where even the crack in the red wall oozes with symbolism. A well deserved winner.”

Wim Van AalstGraduated in 1997 in Graphic Design & Publicity at the KASK in Ghent, Belgium. Ten years later he taught himself to paint by copying Old Masters. He did a lot of research into painting materials and techniques which led to a lively collaboration with American painter Tad Spurgeon, who later published his findings in his book “Living Craft”.

In 2012, Van Aalst wrote a series of articles for the New York Epoch Times newspaper called “Reading Art”. In september 2014 he will prepare a “Painting of the week” feature for the same newspaper.

Besides painting, Wim Van Aalst also teaches courses in 17th century painting techniques and academic drawing and painting.
