Spring Garden TimeFew things are anticipated more in spring than the arrival of new leaves on the trees and budding fl owers in the garden. A landscape awash with fresh colors can brighten the spirit and make anyone want to head outdoors.

There are many different plants that begin to show their colors in the spring. A number of perennials, annuals and trees begin to fl ower or show new sprouts come the springtime. Here are some plants that can be planted for springtime enjoyment.

Annuals

Looking for fi rst signs of color? Look no further than these wonderful annuals.

* Alyssum: Starting in April, this cascading bounty of tiny fl owers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterfl ies.

* Dianthus: These vivid fl owers also attract butterfl ies and are often a cottage garden staple.

* Gypsophila: Also known as baby's breath, these delicate fl owers can serve as fi ller in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available.

* Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade.

* Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup family, these fl owers bloom in shades of white to violet.

* Pansy: These fl owers are some of the earliest spring bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips.

* Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding fl ower.

Perennials

These plants will come back year after year and offer spring shows.

* Cherry blossom: The fl owers that sprout on cherry trees are some of the fi rst signs of spring. Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cherry blossom festivals.

* Columbine: These beautiful blooms at-tract butterfl ies and can be a nice part of a garden bed.

* Jacob's ladder: Variegated foliage that is dappled with violet-colored fl owers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden.

* Primrose: These fl owers come in a variety of shades, making them versatile in any gar-den. They also tend to attract butterfl ies and hummingbirds.

* Sweet violet: These fragrant fl owers are edible as well as attractive. These plants can self-plant, so unless a gardener wants them to spread, they should be kept contained.

Basement Versatility(MS) -- These days every inch of space in the home counts. So, when considering building a new home, it makes sense to consider building both "up and down" to maximize your living space.

"Basements are like 'found space' in the home because they're so versatile that you can make a well-built basement an ex-tension of your living areas," says Jim Costello, president of Superior Walls. "To maximize basement space, it's critical to construct the area below ground with a pre-cast insulated foundation system that's energy-effi cient and damp free. This way the basement area is a welcoming, active part of the home rather than a 'dump all' storage area."

Costello recommends constructing a basement with Xi wall panels. Each precast foundation panel is constructed with a concrete face shell, backed by 21/2-inches of DOW Styrofoam insulation. Steel reinforced concrete walls create a permanent barrier against sidewall water penetration, making the base-ment system damp-proof.

"These foundation systems are very popular with homeown-ers because you can create door and window openings in them to access natural light," says Costello. "By making the right decisions at the time of construction to use pre-cast insulated foundation systems, homeowners are making a long-term in-vestment in their family's happiness and in the resale value of their house."

For more information visit www.superiorwalls.com.

Basement built with pre-cast insulated Xi wall panels provides added living space for homeowners.

Gardening Fans Find a Growing Garden Pest Just Plain Stinks There's little escape from a garden pest that has been increasingly showing up in yards and homes in the Northeast. Wreaking havoc on ornamental plants, vegetables and fruit trees, this pest, simply put, stinks.

The brown marmorated stink bug is not native to North America, but it hitched a ride over from China and Japan years ago. Since 1999, when the fi rst documented cases of stink bugs were made, the bug has multiplied, so much so that stink bug plagues in many residential areas have become commonplace.

A stink bug is a true bug, feeding on many plants by piercing the host plant and sucking out juices with its probos-cis. The penetrated areacan develop necrosis anddamage affected plants inmany ways. In Japan, thebug is known to be a pestto fruit and soybean crops.

Stink bugs get their namesfrom the scent glands onthe underside of the thoraxbetween the fi rst and sec-ond pair of legs. If the bugsare squashed, they canemit a foul smell, whichis primarily used to thwartwould-be predators.

Stink bugs begin to feed inlate May or early June. They can be seen in abundance in outdoor areas, clinging to window screens or walking along decks. Their size and appearance (almost an inch big, with a brown spiky-looking armor) often makes people weary of the bugs. Apart from the damage they do to plants, stink bugs are relatively harmless to people and pets. Although they have wings and can fl y, stink bugs are generally content to travel on their legs.

Homeowners should keep in mind that stink bugs prefer to overwinter inside and hibernate. That means that come the fall season the bugs will seek entry to homes and buildings to beat the cold until they can venture out the next season. This is where they can be vexing to people. Coming across a stink bug tucked inside of a blanket or at the back of a closet can catch individuals off guard.

To prevent stink bugs from entering the home, homeowners can seal any openings to the out-doors as much as possible, caulking around windows and doors. Stink bugs can live up to a year or more and may reproduce several times if the weather conditions are right. It may be diffi cult to completely eradicate all pests.

Safety First When Building Backyard Playground for KidsFew things are as enjoyable for parents and grandparents as watching their children and grand-children play. As cherished as such playtime can be, it can quickly turn into a memory adults and children alike would prefer to forget if an injury occurs.

Playground accidents vary in severity. Some produce just a scrape or a scratch, while more drastic accidents can lead to broken bones or even death. And where those accidents occur might come as a sur-prise to parents. Ten years ago, a study conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission discovered more deaths occurred on backyard playground equipment than on public playgrounds. A 2009 study from the CPSC found that 40 deaths were associated with playground equipment between 2001 to 2008, the majority of which were the result of hangings or asphyxiations.

Naturally, parents aware of such statistics are concerned, particularly those who want to erect a playground for their children on their own property. When building a home playground for children, parents should consider the following factors.

Location, location, location!

A home playground’s location is very important. When deciding where to put a playground, consider its acces-sibility. Is the playground easily reached should an ac-cident occur? Can children be seen playing from a nearby window? Should an accident occur, is the playground within earshot of the home? Kids often play on a home playground while their parents are inside, so be sure to locate the playground close enough to the home where you can see and hear your kids from the house, and in a spot that’s easy to get to should an accident occur.

Equipment

Though most parents would love to build their children a home playground that rivals the near-by amusement park, some equipment has historically proven to be more dangerous than others. A 2009 report from the CPSC indicated that climbers were associated with 23 percent of all playground injuries while swings were associated with 22 percent. When installing equipment, be sure everything is installed in strict adherence to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Surfaces

According to the CPSC, 67 percent of playground accidents between 2001 and 2008 involved falls or equipment failure. Most kids are going to fall once or twice when playing on the playground. Parents can plan for such falls and minimize their child’s injury risk by installing impact-absorbing surfaces beneath the playground. Such surfaces are the standard at many public playgrounds and can make the difference between a simple fall or one that results in broken bones or a trip to the emergency room.

Inspection

Kids often like to play rough, and as a result playgrounds commonly take quite a beating. Even if equipment was sturdy at installation and was installed to the letter of the manufacturer’s instructions, parents should routinely inspect equipment to ensure it’s holding up to the wear and tear of children. Ask kids to let you know immediately if anything feels loose or isn’t working properly.

For more information, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov.

The Choice for a Home Air Filtration SystemWhat homeowners are breathing in every day has the potential to harm their health. Ac-cording to the Environmental Protection Agency, it’s the air inside of the home, rather than the air outside, that may cause the most physical harm. Many people seek options to reduce the toxicity of indoor air through a fi ltration system.

Indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more toxic than outside air. Newer, energy-effi cient homes that are very well insulated against drafts may be among the most dangerous. That’s be-cause they restrict the ability for fresh air to seep into the home.

Resident dust mites, harmful airborne particulates and even mold could be residing in the house along with its occupants. An air fi ltration system can be one strategy homeowners can employ to clean up indoor air.

Homeowners may want to consider a permanent, whole-house unit that hooks up to the central heating and air conditioning already set up in the home. This enables every room in the home to receive fi ltered air. It is essential that the fi lters on the unit be changed frequently. Also, if a humidifi er is hooked up to the HVAC unit, then the water should be changed on a regular basis so that mold does not proliferate and get blown throughout the home. Homeowners who don’t have forced-air heating and cooling will have to have a different fi ltration system installed instead.

For renters or individuals who don’t want a permanent system, there are many portable air fi ltration units on the market. These can bemoved from room to room and even brought along when traveling.

Air fi ltration units will vary depending on what they are cleaning from the air. Some tackle mold, others viruses and bacteria. Indi-viduals with allergies should look for fi lters that target dust and pollen. Others can trap fumes and microscopic particles through unique processes. Here are some of the advanced cleaning fi ltra-tion systems to consider.

* Ionizers: Emit a small electric charge to the air stream creating a magnetic-like attraction for pollution particles, which causes them to adhere to the fi lter.

* Ultraviolet light purifi cation: Air passes through a UV system that destroys bacteria, viruses and dust mites of any size.

* Electrostatic precipitators: These create opposite charges on metal wires or plates, attracting and holding dust, pollen, smoke, and other particles as small as .0001 microns. The assembly often can be removed and washed for reuse.

* High effi ciency particulate air (HEPA): These fi lters are de-signed to remove 99.97 percent of the particulates that pass through the fi lters. They will have no effect on fumes, viruses, bacteria, smaller mold spores, or some tobacco particulates.

* Ultra HEPA: An even more effi cient form of HEPA cleaners, which typically clean out 99.999 percent of the particulates that pass through them.

* Ozone: Destroys all bacteria that comes in contact with the ozone, and leaves a “fresh” smell in the air. However, the safety of ozone inside the home is questionable. The Canadian government has banned the sale of ozone releasing air purifi cation systems.
