Under 10

Marist Heat, 7/87, defeated by Eastlake, 3/126.

Batting: Riley Edmondson 15, Henry Atkinson 11 Bowling: Xavier Batch 2/13, Ethan Teede 1/15

On a hot Friday evening the Heat took to the field. The boys started well but

Eastlake’s middle order took advantage of the short boundaries and with a blow out in wides Eastlakes gave the boys a healthy total to chase. Highlights in the

field were Xavier’s two wickets, one being a caught and bowled. The heat took

to the crease and looked impressive with the bat, once again with everyone

adding to the score, some good boundaries by Hamish, Riley, Will and Kyle and new personal bests by Henry and Kyle. Unfortunately, the Heat lost more

wickets then they would have liked but they cheered their team mates on until

the end. The Heat will continue to focus on their fielding and running between wickets at training and we are sure it will pay dividends as the season progresses.

Marist Hurricanes, 9/125, defeated by WCMCC Hurricanes, 7/133. Batting: Matthew Garrety 32, Archie Brown 28

Bowling: Matthew Garrety 5/34

Marist had a very close game against WCMCC Hurricanes. The boys should be proud of their efforts as our

team were 3 players short. Marist went out to field first and everyone gave it their all and showed some great team work. Matty was the best bowler with 5/34 followed by brother Jacob with 1/27. Archie and

Isaac took some great catches and Ethan was brilliant at keeper.

Matty and Ethan opened the batting with Matty scoring an incredible 34 runs and Ethan making his first runs of the season with 3. Isaac and Jacob scored well, both making 16 runs each against some very good

bowlers. Archie was our last batter and tried so hard to chase the runs with some amazing shots, scoring 28.

Each week the boys are trying really hard at training and it’s paying off with great performances by all.

They are becoming stronger as a team and forming some lovely friendships.

Marist Sixers, 5/159, defeated St Edmund’s, 9/111 – 29 November 2019

Meeting at a very dry Mawson track the Sixers boys knew it would be a high scoring match with a lighting quick outfield. We came up against an Eddie’s team with plenty of numbers and were an enthusiastic bunch

after winning the toss and sending us in to bat.

Our innings started slowly until Logan Bray came to the crease and smashed a massive 6, going on to top score with (19), Oscar Moore also contributed well coming in last hitting some nice boundaries either side of

the wicket finishing with (16).

Having posted our biggest total of the season, the boys went into the field with intent to bowl as straight as

possible and back each other up in the field. Some brilliant wicket keeping from Harry Raven saw him take an amazing catch and stumping, while all the boys bowled great the best of the day were Alex Moore (2/7)

and Oscar Moore (3/13).

Far and away our best performance of the season had been building over recent weeks with great attitude at

training and bringing it to the games. Keep it up Sixers!

Marist Stars,

Marist U/10 Stars played Weston Creek at Marist on a Hot Friday afternoon. The outfield looked flat and

fast, we were going to see some boundaries. Weston Creek won the toss and elected to bat. Will Kemp opened up the bowling for the stars and things were

underway.

Weston Creek found the boundary on a few occasions but in general,

our bowling was improved with more playable balls being bowled than in previous games, some encouraging improvement there.

Fielding was good, Reeve

in particular getting down to stop some solidly struck balls. There was even some backing

up behind the stumps, good to see. The opposition finished up

with 9/101.

Our innings with the bat got off to a solid start with Lucas and Reeve giving the oppositions fielders a good cardio workout

running them to the boundary again and again with 9 boundaries between them, 6 from Lucas and 3 from

Reeve. Lucas in particular hit some very attractive flat batted shots straight back past the bowler. Lucas finished with 31 runs, a great performance and Reeve with 15.

Thoreau and William were next up and continued the good batting, Thoreau with 10 and William scoring 12.

Will and Oliver finished things off for the Stars with some good shots and Oliver displaying a great defence against some straight bowling in the last couple of overs.

In the end the Stars got the win with 8/112.

A close game enjoyed by all, great to get a win after a couple of losses in the previous rounds.

Marist Thunder, 8/134, lost to Queanbeyan, 5/148

Batting: Sam Ryan 30, Zander Denny 17, Henry Hyson 11, Harry Whalen 10

Bowling: Zander Denny 2/13, Harry Whalen 1/14. The Marist Thunder went down to the well drilled Queanbeyan team, in a close match losing by 14, but for a

few unlucky breaks the result would have been closer.

Marist bowled first and started well by containing the Queanbeyan batsman with some tight bowling by Zander who claimed two wickets, and Harry got one as well, but was extremely unlucky not to get another

when the bails failed to come off. Sam also bowled some great deliveries, bamboozling the batsmen with

flight and spin and was unlucky to go unrewarded. Continued improvement from Finn, Marcus and Jonah

kept the Queanbeyan batsman on their toes. Marcus and Finn got our run chase off to a good start, with some good running between the wickets. Henry

and Harry upped the run rate, and stole plenty of cheeky byes. The highlight of the match was Zander and

Sam’s closing partnership, both boys finding the boundary on multiple occasions, in particular Sam crushing 21 off the last over.

Unfortunately we came up short, but the improvement each week will ensure we win more games at the back

end of the season.

Under 11

Division 1

Marist, 7/145, defeated Wests, 10/84.

Batting: Jack Whalen 24, Conall Fitzgerald 18, Sam Pilloni 17 Bowling: Conall Fitzgerald 2/7, Gab Louis2/17, Thomas Smith1/8

Marist Under 11 Division 1 lost the toss and were asked to bowl first.

Conall bowled with his usual consistency taking 2/7 including a maiden. He was well supported by Gab taking 2 wickets and Thomas, Logan and Sam all taking 1. Marist managed to restrict Wests Blues to 10/ 84.

However the highlight of the innings came to the laughter of the boys when the coach fell to the ground

while umpiring as the team set of for a quick single. One boy even commented “gee coach that was pretty

un-coordinated”.

Page 5: Willow Talk - mcccc.act.cricket.com.aumcccc.act.cricket.com.au/files/15220/files/Willow Talk/willowtalk 8 2019-20 - 4... · provisions are covered in the ACT Junior Cricket Rule Book.

5

With the bat Wests bowled well. Marist still managed a total of 7/145. The top scorers were Jack 24, Conall

18 and Sam 17. Special mention to Thomas and Gab who valued there wickets and did not get out. As such,

manager Dave provided them with the KitKat prize. Another great win, with a young team who is proving to be very hard to beat while always remaining

respectful of their opposition.

Friday

Marist Blue, 9/130, defeated by WCMCC Thunder, 5/135. Batting: Marcus Sykes 28*, Jacob Hardy 16*

Bowling: Marcus Sykes 1/4.

Marist Light, 4/161, defeated Eastlake Hawks, 8/109.

Bowling: Daniel Coffey 1/9 (2 overs), Ignatius Murray 0/7 (3 overs), Jake Munyard 2/11 (3 overs)

Batting: Jake Munyard 24, Daniel Coffey 20. On a sunny and sweltering Friday afternoon, the boys lost the toss and were sent into bat. Only minutes after

arriving to Deakin Oval, Daniel Coffey was asked to pad up and was sent to the crease. Daniel and Jake

opened the batting with a cracking partnership of 44, which included impressive calling, six 4's between

them and an improved ability to capitalize on misfielding opportunities with a number of byes scored. The top order continued to score with Luke Gill coming in to score 19 and Iggy opening up his batting with 9 off

3 balls. The bottom of the batting order; Alex Holt, Roland Carter and Jack Austin continued to find the gap

and added more runs for the boys to end the innings with 128 runs. The boys' effort to keep the opposition's run rate down was undoubtedly a team effort, with impressive

bowling from all the boys and exciting run outs and catches throughout the innings. Highlights include

Daniel as wicket keeper not allowing a single bye to be scored, Jake taking two wickets in an over with Jack taking an impressive catch at mid wicket, Luke getting two run outs during his time wicket keeping and a

catch. There was excellent fielding overall with numerous catches, demonstrating greater composure in the

field, quick running by everyone to keep the number of boundaries and runs down with the boys winning by

52 runs. Great effort by all involved, including parents who sat and umpired in the hot sun!

Marist Navy,

Marist Navy narrowly overcame a fast finishing Weston Creek Sixers by six runs on a hot Friday night at Hughes Oval. Captain Aidan won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first.

Leading from the front Aidan then

opened the batting with Griffin and the pair set the tone for the innings

with loud calling and aggressive

running between wickets. A very

consistent batting effort followed with good contributions from all batting

pairs. Notable contributions came from top scorers James Bartlett (14) and Lachlan Green (14) who were

well supported by Domenic Trinca Talalin (7) and Thomas Acheson (7). At the close of the innings the Navy boys had compiled 6/83, their highest score of the season. Consistent line and length bowling backed by energy and commitment in the field followed. As has been the

recent trend however the Navy bowlers weren't perhaps rewarded adequately for their efforts. This week the

best results with the ball came from Patrick Bartlett 2/6 (3), his wickets late in the contest vital to the final outcome. Griffin Sluis 1/1 (2) bowled with good control and economy and James Bartlett's 1/2 (3) pace and

accuracy proved a handful for the Weston Creek boys. The wicket keeping this week was also noteworthy

with Lachlan and Griffin showing excellent feet and glove work; Griffin combining with Thomas in the outfield to affect a crucial run out. In the end, the Navy boys restricted the Sixers to 5/73 from their allotted

overs. This meant that in adjusted terms the scores read Navy 103 vs Sixers 97.

Marist Royal, 7/110, defeated by Queanbeyan White, 6/151.

Batting: Edwin Tijo 18*, William Rees 17*.

Bowling: Rowan Koina 2/12, William Rees 2/24.

Page 6: Willow Talk - mcccc.act.cricket.com.aumcccc.act.cricket.com.au/files/15220/files/Willow Talk/willowtalk 8 2019-20 - 4... · provisions are covered in the ACT Junior Cricket Rule Book.

Marist Teal, 9/102, defeated by Eastlake Tigers, 4/210.

Batting: Xander Stoddart 27, Harry David 12*, Ignatius 11.

Bowling: Xander Stoddart 1/26. 3 Run outs unassisted by Harry, Xander & Taj.

On another hot Friday evening with the smoke and haze hanging over the Deakin

ground our boys had a bowl. Our bowlers toiled against the hard hitting Eastlake tigers team. Some catches were spilled however we managed to take 4 wickets for the game: 1

for Xander also three great run outs by direct hits from Harry, Taj and Xander.

Our opening pair of Xander and Taj had a great partnership of 33

(with Xander hitting 3 boundaries and a fantastic six for his 27 and Taj keeping the bowling out down one end). Levi and Sam tried

hard to keep the score ticking over up with Sam hitting his first 4 for

the team. Harry (12) and Ignatius (11) took to the Eastlake bowlers with some awesome running between wickets and some cracking

boundaries. Ignatius with a cracking shot for four.

A great game again - our batting was awesome with our score over

a hundred runs for the second week in a row!! Well done Teal team!!

Division 2

Marist Blue, bye.

Marist Navy, 8/53, defeated by Queanbeyan White, 3/83.

Batting: Jake Leonard 14, Archie Webb 11

Bowling: Jake Leonard 1/7, Christy Ealias 1/8, Daniel Sajimon 1/9

Windy and cold conditions greeted us at Blundell Park in Queanbeyan. The Whites won the toss and elected

to bowl first. Their bowlers were accurate and together with some great fielding, we struggled to make runs.

Jake Leonard was the top scorer this week with 14 runs and Archie Webb scored 11 runs. Anderson Bush was able to withstand their bowlers and retire again this week. Our innings ended on 53.

We started our defence well with Daniel Sajimon taking a wicket on the first ball of the Whites innings. Jake

Leonard and Christy Ealias also bowled well. But the Whites quickly reached our total. It was a tough day for the boys.

Marist Royal, 2/229 (30 overs), defeated Eastlake Hawks, 8/39 (22 overs). Bowling: Tejas Nambissan 2/1 (2 overs), Max Read 2/2 (3 overs), Sam Smith 2/2 (3 overs), Hugh Cook 2/5

(2 overs)

Batting: Viira Peiris 49* (47), Hugh Cook 27* (24), Matt Wray 26* (25), Sam Smith 20* (26),

Tejas Nambissan 19* (25), Kelley Jack 18* (26) On a sunny yet windy and chilly day, the Royals, captained by Matt Wray, lost the toss and were sent into

the field by Eastlake Hawks. Tejas Nambissan and Max Millgate opened the bowling, with both applying

plenty of pressure through accurate deliveries and a well-set field. Tejas picked up two early wickets (bowled), while Max was unlucky with several dropped catches from his looping leggies. The wickets

flowed regularly with Sam Smith, Max Read and Hugh Cook each taking wickets. Eastlake were struggling

at the 15 over mark with 6 wickets lost, and by the end of the 22nd

over their innings was closed when a fast-paced yorker from Hugh cannoned into the foot of Eastlake’s final batsman, dismissing him LBW.

The Royals hit a good number of boundaries during their innings, but were also assisted by some wayward

bowling from Eastlake. The Royals hit their highest total so far this season (229), with Viira Peiris top

Page 8: Willow Talk - mcccc.act.cricket.com.aumcccc.act.cricket.com.au/files/15220/files/Willow Talk/willowtalk 8 2019-20 - 4... · provisions are covered in the ACT Junior Cricket Rule Book.

scoring due to his opportunity to bat again after his earlier retirement. Unbeknown to Viira, he just missed a

half century when he took a single from the final delivery of the match to finish at 49*. Hugh also batted

well as opener, making 27* at better than a run-a-ball like his opening partner. Sam (20*) and Kelley Jack (18*) batted well together, with Kelley hitting a couple of big sixes behind square leg from pull-shots.

Batting at six, Matt Wray scored 26* at better than a run-a-ball, running beautifully between wickets with his

partner in crime, Tejas, who hit Eastlake’s quickest bowler for two thunderous cover drives on his way to 19*. It was pleasing to see Evin Josephanil (8 runs) and Max Millgate (6*) running hard between wickets

during the latter overs of the match. The Royals bounced back strongly after a couple of hard fought losses.

Great effort all-round boys!

Under 14

Division 1

Marist, 7/381, defeated CGS Navy, 94 and 7/67, on first innings– two day match in progress

Batting: James Haley 104*, Cian Hickey 72*, Jackson Tarrant 60*, Imran Ali 52*. Bowling: James Haley 3/10 & 0/9, Solomon Becher 2/3 & 0/2, Cian Hickey 2/5.

Day two vs Grammar

Resuming in a strong position, the aim was to build a strong lead and the team delivered.

Jackson started the day in style, registering his first fifty and retired not out on 60, bringing James to the crease. Sehaj fell to an amazing slips catch and Cian joined James at the crease. The pair began punishing the

bowlers with an array of shots to all areas of the ground and running well between the wickets. James blitzed

his way to 50 from around 30 balls and Cian brought up his first fifty for Marist. Not content with a fifty, James smashed his way

to his first ever century from an incredible 52 balls and

retired not out on 104. Cian continued on his way finishing not out on 72 from 59 balls seeing us finish

with a lead of nearly 300 runs - our best batting

performance so far with fifties to Imran, Jackson and

Cian and a century for James. Sol and Mack then started our bowling innings in fine fashion to clean up the tail in three overs, Sol’s return

from injury rewarded with two wickets from two overs.

Enforcing the follow on, we got a quick wicket with Mack getting the same batsmen out twice in the space of two

overs courtesy of another caught behind to Jackson.

Grammar dug in and frustrated our attempts with some

great fielding keeping the pressure up, but unable to capitalise on a few wicket taking opportunities. Mack in

particular putting his body on the line saving a certain

boundary with a full length dive and unfortunately hurting his back in the process. After an extended break, Cian struck with a plumb lbw of their determined opener and Sam produced a well

flighted leg break knocking over the stumps. Lachie and Sehaj chimed in with wickets before Imran

produced a superb one handed catch of his own bowling (and an equally superb celebration) and we had four overs to take the last two wickets.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, and despite a wicket from the last ball of the game, we fell one wicket short of

another outright victory.

Division 2

Marist Blue, 0/62, defeated Tuggeranong, 7/61 - T20, Wednesday 27 November

After winning the toss Marist decided to field and a wonderful team effort was displayed. Some very quick fielding, accurate throwing and constant backing up saw Marist take 5 run outs. A well done to Angus

McRae for taking two great catches and the bowlers who were accurate throughout the innings. Tuggeranong

managed 61 runs from their 20 overs, a total reached comfortably by Marist Blue. Well done to Declan Westcott hitting 41 runs (32 of these runs were 4’s) from 33 balls and Jack Evans for a wonderful partnership

which saw Marist reach 62 runs without the loss of a wicket.

Marist Blue, 3/183, defeated St Edmunds, 9/157 - Sunday 1st December

Eddies won the toss and elected to field so Declan Westcott and Fraser Lehmann volunteered to open for Marist. Some great batting skills were on display from Marist, Declan making 42 from 39 balls, Ethan

Lenihan retiring on 32 and Owen Hardy 34 runs, finding the boundary 5 times. Eric Firth and Xavier

Manning had a good partnership to close out Marist’s innings giving Eddie’s a total of 183 to chase.

Eddies made Marist work hard in the field for thirty overs to defend their total. There was some great bowling on display, well done to Eric Firth taking 3/24 and Ethan Lenihan taking 2/30. Once again good,

accurate fielding saw Marist take a couple of run outs. Well done to Marist for remaining focussed in the

field and claiming their second victory for the week.

U15 Division 2

Marist, 5/133, defeated Eastlake Hawks, 7/109 – T20, 27 November.

Marist, 1/97, defeated Eastlake Hawks, 93 – 1 December.

Under 18

Division 2

Marist, 5/95, defeated by Eastlake, 7/179 – T20, 27 November.

Batters: Harry Jindal 35 n.o, James Bolton 17 n.o

Bowlers: Connor Murray 1/7, Anthony Egan 1/11

Marist, 8/202, defeated by Queanbeyan Blue, 5/268, on first innings.

Bowlers: Charlie Cooper 2/39, Charlie York 2/40 Batting: Jack Jeffery 42, Joe Carroll 37.

Eastlake opened the batting on Day 1 and compiled 2/123 in their first 25 overs. Some tight bowling and

energetic fielding restricted the Eastlake batters to an achievable total. Marist’s reply was 4/106 and the

game certainly in the balance. Day 2 had Marist compile a competitive total of 202 with Jack Jeffery, Joe Carroll and Charlie Cooper all

scoring over 20 runs. A lead of 79 was pleasing and some tight bowling early started to get the opposition a

little concerned. However, a century from the opening batsman put to bed their dreams of a first win in a 2 day game for Marist!

Highlight of the game was a spectacular catch by Sam McGregor.

Boys are improving every game and a win is not far away. Keep trying lads!

Additionally the game of cricket has certain traditions which have been developed over the years. The Preamble to the Laws of Cricket stresses that the game ‘should be played not only within its Laws but

also within the Spirit of the Game’.

Participants, players and officials alike, must conduct themselves, at all times, in accordance with the

Laws of Cricket and the ACTCA Junior Council Competition Rules. In the words of Donald Bradman: “it is the responsibility of all those that play the game (the

custodians) to leave the game in a better state than when they first became involved.”

Coaches and managers of the younger age teams should reinforce this aspect of the game.

No smoking or drinking

Coaches and managers should not smoke or drink alcohol at games or during training. Parents are

requested not to drink while a match is in progress.

Undertaking by Committee and coaches/managers

All Club office bearers will abide by the Club’s Code of Conduct and work to promote the best

interests of the Club and College. Committee Members will sign an undertaking to this effect at the

beginning of each season. Coaches and Managers will also sign this undertaking.

Parents and supporters

All parents and Club supporters are expected to abide by the Club’s Code of Conduct and promote the

best interests of the Club and College.

Parents are entitled to raise with the coach or manager any concerns or issues they may have with the approach or conduct of the team management. This must not be done in front of players. Parents

may also raise such concerns with the Committee.

Parents must ensure boys are picked up on time, taking into account possible early finishes and wet weather, so that players and coaches/managers are not left waiting for long periods for parents to

arrive.

Breach of Code of Conduct

Any breach of the Code of Conduct by a player, team official, parent or Club supporter should be

referred to the Committee through the age group coordinator for consideration and appropriate action.

Serious and/or repeated breaches by players may result in offenders being stood down from part or all

of a match. While suspended, a player may not play in any match for the Club during the period of the suspension.

Serious or repeated breaches by a team official may result in the official being removed from their

position with the team. The Club may ask a parent or supporter who breaches the Code to absent themselves from future

games.

Any person reported to the Committee shall be invited to present their case to the Committee prior to

the Committee coming to a decision on the matter. The Committee may appoint a sub-committee to investigate reported breaches of the Code of Conduct. Any findings of the sub-committee shall be

provided to the full Committee for appropriate action. If necessary, a special Committee meeting may

be called to consider the matter. Any breach of the Code reported to the Committee shall be passed on to the College through the

appropriate Junior or Senior Cricket Coordinator.

Any sanction applied by the Committee shall be referred to the College through the Cricket Coordinator.

As a nominated official of the Marist Cricket Club Canberra, I agree to abide by the Club’s Code of

Conduct and at all times to promote the interests of the Club and Marist College.
