New Sport Houses for SPCC Newcastle

From humble beginnings in 1982, St Philip’s Christian College has grown into what is now a significant community, marked by faith, and excellence, and belonging. We are a community that celebrates learning, and achieving one’s personal best.

Over the past 37 years, literally thousands of SPCC students have committed to run, jump, kick, throw, swim and strive to represent their house, their community, their school and the region.

At SPCC we are proud of our region with Newcastle and the Hunter Valley being home to some of our country’s most beautiful bodies of water.

Middle School Captain Isobel Price, Student Leader Sam Parker, and Vice Captains Eliza Durie and Joshua Burke recently represented the College at The Returned and Services League of Australia, Lambton - New Lambton Sub-Branch Rememberance Day service. We received positive feedback from the Sub-Branch including, “we were impressed that Sam wore his AAFC uniform, which lent to the occasion; this bearing and appearance did the school, and his unit, proud.” We were honoured to have our students represent the College at this important event within the local community.

Remembrance Day 2019

On Thursday 14th November, Kindergarten students visited the newly developed playground at Griffith Park, Stockton. The students had fun exploring the forces behind moving playground equipment. We had a very big day using the wonderful Newcastle transport system, which involved catching the train, light-rail, ferry and bus. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who volunteered their time and energy to help on the day. Without you, the day would not have been the fun filled success it was.

Rugby Union Gala Day

On Thursday 21st November, students from Junior  and Middle School attended the inaugural Rugby Union Mixed 7 a–side Gala Day hosted by The Waratahs Junior Rugby Club at Waratah Oval. There were two prizes:

The Ray Frost Cup ( Year 5 and 6) and the Dave Bowtell Cup ( Year 3 and 4)The day began with a compulsory coaching clinic conducted by NSW Rugby Coaches followed by matches against Plattsburg PS, Corpus Christi, Mayfield West PS, Wallsend PS and Macquarie College.  Rugby NSW and the Waratahs Junior Rugby Club  also provided referees, on field coaches and a BBQ lunch for all players.

There were various levels of experience in each of the teams, but most of the players were new to the game of Rugby 7’s.  They found it to be both a fast and physical game. All teams played gallantly, developed their rugby skills and supported each other throughout the tournament. Team Managers Mr Grindley, Mr Clayton and players are looking forward to further rugby opportunities.

Year 5 and 6 Teams

Max Bowles, Chaz Garrett, Hugo Higgins, Tyler Bright, William Miles, Zavier Ryan, Max Roberts, Lachlan Davies, Noah Clayton, Stuart Thorn and Sam Glasser

ResultsThe JUNIOR team won all their matches to advance to the finals where they won with only one try scored against them! They were presented with the Dave Bowtell Cup by octogenarian Dave Bowtell who was the Waratah/ NSW rugby representative player that the cup was named after. Team Managers : Mrs Mackenzie and Max McGavern (Year 8) were very proud of the players commitment and sportsmanship.   Congratulations on an exceptional performance!

On Tuesday, Year 1 walked to Maroba, an aged care facility in our local area. We were there to build community with the residents, as part of our learning this Term about the significant role of local communities. The students each took in a small gift and a thoughtfully created drawing that shared the message of Christmas. While they were distributing the treats, the students had an opportunity to meet many of the residents and read a story that they had selected. We finished the visit by singing a few favourite Christmas Carols, led by our Year 1 singing group. A wonderful morning was had by all.

TakingConsideredRisks

Why is it important to take considered risks in life? What would life look like if we never took any risks? Some people gravitate towards taking risks, others shy away from taking risks. What is your naturalresponse to taking risks? How do we know if a risk we are taking is ‘considered’? How does taking considered risks help us to learn? How does faith relate to taking considered risks? How does Taking Considered Risks relate to other Learning Habits?

Our curiosity should lead us to take risks in life. Considered risks are those that have been thoughtthrough, the possible consequences assessed before we take action.

Just 4 more opening days left in 2019 for you to purchase uniforms, and for this reason, the uniform shop is open extended hours next week. We advise all parents to get in early, not wait till next year. You might want to pop in before or after your child’s presentation day?

Monday, 2nd December 8am – 4pm Tuesday, 3rd December 8am – 4pm Wednesday, 4th December 8am – 4pm (Last day/Term 4)Monday, 9th December 1pm – 5pm (Holiday period)

In 2020, the uniform shop will re-open on Monday, 29th January. Details of all opening days and appointment days (for new enrolments) are on the website.

Volunteers: A huge thankyou to the volunteers that have helped in the shop over the past few weeks. We look forward to another great year with you all

Online ordering: Don’t forget, if you haven’t placed an order online before, here is how you do it…Log onto the SPCC Website* Click on Uniform Shop tab at the top right of screen* “Buy your SPCC Uniforms Online” – click on “Order Now” button (this takes you to the webstore)* Choose the sub school that you need items for (e.g. Middle school)* Choose items/add to cart/go to cart (top right) and follow prompts to payment. * Remember to choose ‘Newcastle’ shop to “click and collect” from

Shoes: Every year, our customer base for shoes grows and that is because parents are loving the quality (and how long they last), the foot support (important especially for young feet that are still developing) and the price. This week our annual shoe sale began and in this newsletter is a flyer with all the information.

New FB page for the SPCC Uniform Shops and it is called ‘SPCC Uniform Shops’ A platform to communicate with students and parents across all our campuses. Tips and hints, updates on uniform requirements, sales, opening hours, second-hand lists and more. Check it out, like it and be in the loop!

Girls overblouses: Not sure if you have noticed or not but all girls summer overblouses sold from the uniform shop are lined with extra fabric to prevent them being see-through. These came into stock about 2 years ago.

Second-hand: Thank you to the families who have recently sorted out their unwanted uniforms and brought them in for processing….many new 2020 new enrolments have appreciated being able to buy them during their appointment over the past week. If there are others (year 12’s?) who no longer need their uniform items and would like to support the school in this way, then please bring them in so we can have them processed ready for the busy ‘back to school’ period. We are always appreciative of the families that are supporting the school (and helping other school families) by dropping in uniform items to be sold via the shop, or making a donation to our welfare boxes. When purchasing or selling second-hand items from any of the 4 SPCC uniform shops you can be assured that you are purchasing good quality and correct

uniform items as our processors follow the SPCC Second-Hand Policy and this ensures that standard of uniform at St Philip’s remains high. Consignment forms are available at the shop or by downloading from the SPCC webpage via the ‘uniform shop” tab. At the end of each term you will receive credit vouchers for any items of yours that have sold and these are like “cash” and can be used in the uniform shop or swapped with another parent for cash. If you no longer have children enrolled a credit to your bank account will be applied. If you have unwanted uniform items (they don’t fit anymore etc) and would like to receive credit to spend in the shop, then please bring your items in to be processed.
