Weekly Phonics/Spellings Task Weekly Reading Task Watch the Read Write Inc phonics lesson daily which will be streamed lived here at 9.30am and again at 12.30pm for Set 1 and 10am and again at 1pm for Set 2. Day 1: Log on to Phonics Play using the username: march20 and password: home. Play the phase 2 Buried Treasure. Day 2: Play the phase 2 Picnic on Pluto. Ask your child to ‘Fred Talk’ any words they cannot read from sight. Day 3:  Read and write this week’s spelling words: time, asked, that, went, off. Remember to use the usual format: read, write, cover, check. (Page 8) Day 4: Play the phase 2 Tricky Word Trucks. Practice reading and writing this week’s spelling words again. Day 5: Test your child on this week’s spelling words. Say the words and ask your child to write it down. Then show the word (one word at a time) and ask your child to read the word. Practice forming the lower case letters of the alphabet. Then encourage your child to write a simple sentence using this week’s spelling words: time, asked, that, went, off. (Page 8)

Day 1:  Before reading through today’s story Mix, Mix Mix, discuss the front cover with your child. Ask: who is on the front cover? What are they mixing? Where are they mixing? Write down your predictions. Begin to read Mix, Mix Mix. Encourage your child to point to the words and to use their phonics for words they cannot read from sight. Ask your child to think about any words in the text that they do not understand. Day 2: Recall yesterdays story Mix, Mix Mix. Ask your child; why do you think Bob rubs his tummy? What are some of the things that Bob puts in his pan? Would you like to taste his mixture? Why? Day 3: Listen to A Squash and a Squeeze. Ask your child; which animal enters first? What do the animals do when they are inside the house? Why is the wise old man telling the old lady to take the animals inside? Encourage your child to write a simple sentence to describe what one of the animals did. Day 4: Recall yesterdays story A Squash and a Squeeze. Think of different animals that you could add in the story. What will your animals do? Why? Write a simple sentence to explain your choice of animals. Day 5: Using the animals you thought of yesterday today create your own story book. Who is going to be in your story? What is going to happen? Design a front cover and label your work. Use your imagination to think of a creative story. If your child needs support to think of their own story encourage them to use the storyline from A Squash and a Squeeze but change the animals in the story.

Learning Project- to be completed throughout the week: Ancient Greece and Olympians This project should be completed throughout the week. It will incorporate a range of different subjects and topics. The focus this week is to discuss the similarities and differences between old and new Olympics. Day 1  During this week, your child will be learning about similarities and differences between the Olympics of Ancient Greece and what we know as our modern day Olympics. Watch the video from last week with your child. Ask: Can you name the different sports that were played in the early Olympic games. Now watch Olympic Games 2016 Rio This video was from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Olympics took place in 2016. Talk to your child about what they can see on the video of the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. Discuss what is the same and what is different between the Ancient Greece Olympics and the Olympic Games in Rio 2016? Ask: What Olympic sports can you recognise? What sports were the same as the Ancient Greek Olympic Games and the 2016 Rio Games? What was different? Did the athletes have clothes on? Are there any women playing the sports? Day 2  Watch the video again. Use the pictures below to draw and label three sports that were played during the Ancient Greek Olympics.

Use the pictures below to draw and label five sports that were not played in the Ancient Greece Olympic Games.

Day 4 The cities in these countries have all hosted the Olympic Games. 2016 - Rio, Brazil 2012 - London, United Kingdom 2008 - Beijing, China

Support your child to use Map 1 to find these countries. Look at Map 2. Help your child to find which continent each of the countries are in. Write out the sentences and fill in the missing continents.

Day 5 

Every Olympic Games begins with the traditional Olympic Torch Relay.

The torch is passed from one torchbearer to the next until it reaches the cauldron at the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Stadium.

At the 2016 Olympics, the opening ceremonies were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 5th - 95 days after the torch was first lit in Greece. Watch the Olympic torch race from Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay. Explain to your child that they are going to make an Olympic torch. There are many different ways to make an Olympic torch. Here are a few ideas.
