LEON FRANK CZOLGOSZ (CHOLGOSH)
Born in Alpena, Michigan in 1873.
His family moved to Detroit when he was five.
At 16 he moved to Pennsylvania to work in a glass factory.
Became fascinated with socialist and anarchist movements.
Believed he needed to take matters into his own hands.
ASSASSINATION OF MCKINLEY CONTINUED:
In 1901, Czolgosz moved to Buffalo, New York. He rented a room near the Pan-American Exhibition. President McKinley was at the exhibit in a line greeting
people. Czolgosz got in line, made his way to the front, pulled out a
pistol and shot the president. (September 6, 1901) He was immediatley taken to the ground by the crowd and
beaten before the police got to the scene. President McKinley died on September 13, 1901. Czolgosz was tried and convicted and sentenced to death
by the electric chair on September 23, 1901. (Auburn State Prison in New York)

The Teddy Bear was named after him.

He was a soldier in the Spanish-American War before becoming president.
He was the first conservationist president.
He was elected president in 1904.
In 1912 he created a new party, the Progressive Party or Bull Moose Party.

*He was a “Trust Buster” against corrupt businesses.
*His presidential policies were known as the “Square Deal”.
*He was the first U.S. president to call for universal health care and national health insurance.

*He was an outdoorsman who promoted conservation.
*He acquired the land for the Panama Canal in 1904.
*He was the first American and first President to win the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Russo-Japanese War in 1906.
*Teddy’s first wife was Alice Hathaway Lee, she died on Feb. 14, 1884 after giving birth to their daughter Alice.
*On the same day Teddy Roosevelt’s mother died in the same house. (The light has gone out of my life T.R.)
*Teddy married his second wife Edith Kermit Carow in 1886. They hade five children. (Theodore Jr., Kermit, Ethel Carow, Archibald Bulloch “Archie”, and Quentin.
*JOBS = United States Civil Service Commission, New York City Police Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Colonel in the Spanish-American War, Governor of New York (elected in 1898), Vice-President for McKinley in the 1900 election.

WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT
Taft (Rep) ran against William Jennings Bryan (Dem) in the 1908 election.
He served as president form 1909-1913 and was supported by Theodore Roosevelt.
He was president when New Mexico and Arizona became states.
He was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after his presidency.
MORE ABOUT TAFT
Taft ran for re-election in 1912 for the Republican party.
Theodore Roosevelt ran for president again in 1912 in the Bull Moose Party (Progressive)-split from the Republicans.
By this time Roosevelt now disagreed with Taft on many of his policies and believed he could beat him in the election.
This split the Republican party allowing Woodrow Wilson (Dem) to win the election of 1912
Roosevelt did get more votes than Taft, although Wilson received almost 50% of all the votes.

He ran on the democratic ticket in 1912 and defeated Taft and T. Roosevelt.

Helped to create the National Park Service.

*He was the President of Princeton University from 1902-1910.
*He served as the Governor of New Jersey from 1911-1913
*In 1914 World War I began and kept the United States neutral for most of the war.
Wilson was re-elected to the presidency in 1916 in a very close election, with the slogan “HE KEPT US OUT OF WAR”
Germany bean unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917 and in April of 1917 asked congress to declare war.
He issued his Fourteen Points Speech for a post war world.
He went to Germany to negotiate a armistice and the TREATY OF VERSAILLES.
Created the League of Nations in 1919 and was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 1919 for helping to end World War I.

Wilson suffered a massive stroke in late 1919.
