Martin Van Buren (Democrat) preceded him, John Tyler (Whig???) Followed him

It was the first “modern” campaign complete with speeches and rallies. Andrew Jackson even came out of retirement to campaign for Van Buren. The economic depression that accompanied the Panic of 1837 ruined Van Buren’s chances.

Death. He gave his inaugural address on March 4, 1841 and died on April 4, 1841 from Pneumonia. At 68 he was the oldest man prior to Ronald Reagan to become president. His 1 hour and 40 minute inaugural address on a cold March day was believed to contribute to his death.
