2012/2013

victoria infill
A small office building located on one of the busiest vehicular traffic corridors in the city. The project is designed as to be Platinum LEED certified as well as sensitive to the user and the urban fabric. The ground level meets the street and is transparent to create chance a relationship with pedestrians while the overall building has a simple broad stroke to be understood at a fast pace of the passing vehicle. The parking tucked under the building and not visible to the passerby and is 80% open to eliminate the need for mechanical ventilation. The building has many green features including being passive solar and PV panels, water collection cistern to reuse all rain water, open-able windows and skylights to allow natural light and air.

2009
53 unit work lofts located in the heart of a
thriving downtown. 200 pier was intended
to bring professional offices to a densely
populated residential fabric and relief to local
professionals of the south bay the commute
to downtown Los Angeles. Designed as a
campus smaller scale of buildings rather
than one monolith. The building is wrapped
around a hidden internal parking structure
to create the experience of the side walk to
be one with buildings rather than parking.

pismo mixed use
A master plan of a city block located
in the downtown specific plan core
Located in the central coast city
of Pismo Beach. The project is an
arrangement of buildings and uses
according to urban fabric adjacencies
ranging from commercial to residential.
The project is both horizontal and
vertically mixed use. The scale
and design of the buildings reflect
that of the adjacent scale and use.
Residential bungalows are book ended
by a commercial building and town-
houses. The commercial building with
residential apartments and is located
on the commercial corridor of the city.

cornwall Lane residence
This single family residence is a major remodel of an existing Ventura beach house just steps from the beach. The residence takes advantage of multiple views including the ocean to the west, mountains to the east and framing a local ventura icon “two trees”. the window location and treatment are to maximise view while trying to create privacy in the highly dense Pierpont beach. Formally the residence is an additive set of architectonic shapes melded into a coherent form and rationalization. the forms are functional from the exterior and experienced from the interior. the materials used are to address the severe oxidation of the harsh salt air and weather over time . the interior has many pieces similar to boat construction and created by the owner , a sailor.

terrace residence2004
Raising the roof on an existing dilapidated
and compartmentalized 50’s concrete block
residence. The space of the residence was
more than doubled by raising the roof of
the second level and lowering the floor of
the first level. The existing building was
an un-reinforced masonry structure. The
new roof straps the existing structure
together. many of the interior walls were
removed to create an open flow and allow
light the entire building. The residence is
LEED certified and is passive solar along
with pv panels located on the roof recycled
materials and radiant floor heating.

The urban fabric, the space between
buildings and space created by buildings
has always been an interest master
plans to specific plans. While sitting on
the on the planning commission for the
city of san Buenaventura from 2003-
2006 I was given the opportunity to be
involved with creating and contributing
to the writing of the city general plan, the
Downtown Specific plan form based code
that the city of Ventura has permanently
adopted. StudioDig architects has been
involved in numerous master plans
and specific plans. We have facilitated
multiple planning and design charrettes
for specific plan and community meetings.

virginia dr design/build
StudioDIG acted as the Architect, general contractor and all labor for this single family residence located in Ventura, CA. The use of resources, and materials which included stucco shower walls, sheet metal partitions, recycled no formaldehyde MDF had to be selected creatively and wisely to meet the demands of a very restricted budget. The project included custom concrete counter tops created in the shop of studioDIG, a common creation in the shop of studioDIG. this residence is also passive solar with ribbon windows on the south side with overhangs that block the sun on summer days and allow full light on low sun winter days.

A design/build, acting as the general
contractor and included each phase
as well as and laborer for specific
trades including concrete walls
and framing both finish and rough,
for a small 30’ x 90’ beach lot in a
densely populated beach town where
neighbors are no more than 6 feet
away. the solid sides create privacy
while the glass ends allow for light
and a visual relationship with the walk
street and community. the edges and
corners are erode to allow light and
visibility. they are also turned in to
create a cradling affect. this building
uses feng shui as a guiding principle.

sliding steel doors2013
steel sliding barn doors. part of a remodel
of an existing garage and second unit. the
doors are fully openable to an an inside
outside feeling to the new room. the
doors are made of cotin steel with wood
handles to stay cool in the direct sunlight.
the contrast not only allow the owner to
touch the doors in the heat of the day
but also give contrast of materials. the
steel connection and supprt is expressed
thru the wood handles. the doors were
designed and fabricated entirely on site.

2012
blade signs
Designed, fabricated and installed by
studioDIG architects. The signs are
part of the overall way-finding design.
The sign is designed to be uniform
while allowing self expression for each
storefront. The frame is fabricated
with Corten steel and allowed to rust
while the sign is printed on stainless
steel and contains the store-font
identity. studioDIG created many
functional and visual pieces of art with
the confines of the studioDIG shop

wheel barrel planters
A s i te seci f ic design and fabr icat ion
project. The c l ient desired planters
in an exit court but code restr ict
them anything that could not be
moved. the result were 7 thin,
movable “wheel barrel” p lanters.
the planters were created with
mi ld steel and f in ished in an
automotive pr imer and s i lver
paint. the project was deigned to
have enough soi l to a l low plants to
f lour ish but not too much weight
to be easi ly moved. The sketches
and photos below digram the
design, process and f in ish product.
