A Statement by the Archbishop on the Present Situation in Hong Kong 14th October 2014 Many people have asked me about the present situation in Hong Kong, which has drawn the attention of people on the mainland and all over the world. As the situation continues to change and develop, I wish to respond in the following statement: The past few weeks have been times of turbulence and unease in our city. The Occupy Central movement has revealed the increasing polarisation in our society in terms of ideas about political reform, the widening gap between rich and poor, and the position of Hong Kong in China and the world. Student groups in the Occupy movement are pressing for what they see as the need for more democracy and challenging the nomination process that has been laid down in the electoral framework for our Chief Executive Election in 2017. The government says there can be no change in the National People’s Congress decision on the election procedures. Men and women from all walks of life have taken different standpoints on the Occupy movement as communities, families, schools, and churches become increasingly divided over claims and counter-claims that have been made. Many people have been inconvenienced by what is happening on the streets, and although the number of protesters has decreased over the past week, the conflict has not been resolved. Events continue to unfold, and we are following the situation closely.

We are deeply saddened and distressed by the increasing social conflict. Fortunately, the violent confrontations and use of tear gas on the first night of the protest have not been repeated, and both the demonstrators and the police have been able to keep the peace. The police have been able to remove some of the barricades from the roads peacefully. In order to engage in real dialogue, we need to develop greater trust in one another. However this is not yet happening. Our clergy and laity, and all people in Hong Kong share the gravity of the situation, and acknowledge the present ordeal as an extraordinarily difficult time of trial. We will face a situation of deep internal conflict and division for a long time to come.

The Church is called to a ministry of reconciliation and pastoral care for all. In this time of uncertainty, we open ourselves to our community, as we seek to promote mutual understanding in the spirit of dialogue through both a recognition of differences and a commitment to the common good. We seek to provide care for those who suffer injury in their spirit. We extend our love and prayers for those who take part in demonstrations, for those entrusted with maintaining public order, and for those who hold government office. We offer our unreserved assistance to those who are in need of support, as we recommit ourselves to working for peace and concord of the society of Hong Kong.

First Reading: Isaiah 45.1-7 Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him – and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things. This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

The Collect, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music for the 8.00am, 9.00am and 6.00pm services

The Collect for The Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to that which is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Post Communion for The Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity We praise and thank you, O Christ, for this sacred feast: for here we receive you, here the memory of your passion is renewed, here our minds are filled with grace, and here a pledge of future glory is given, when we shall feast at that table where you reign with all your saints for ever.

Psalm 96. 1-9 1. O sing unto the Lord a new song * sing unto the Lord, all the whole earth. 2. Sing unto the Lord, and praise his Name * be telling of his salvation from day to day. 3. Declare his honour unto the heathen * and his wonders unto all people. 4. For the Lord is great, and cannot worthily be praised * he is more to be feared than all gods. 5. As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols * but it is the Lord that made the heavens. 6. Glory and worship are before him * power and honour are in his sanctuary. 7. Ascribe unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people * ascribe unto the Lord wor-ship and power. 8. Ascribe unto the Lord the honour due unto his Name * bring presents, and come into his courts. 9. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness * let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1.1-10 From Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers,

constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead – Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 22.15-22 When the chief priests and Pharisees had heard the parables, they realized that Jesus was speaking about them. Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought

7

him a denarius. Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Psalm 142 (6.00pm) 1. I cried unto the Lord with my voice * yea, even unto the Lord did I make my supplication. 2. I poured out my complaints before him * and shewed him of my trouble. 3. When my spirit was in heaviness thou knewest my path * in the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me. 4. I looked also upon my right hand * and saw there was no man that would know me. 5. I had no place to flee unto * and no man cared for my soul. 6. I cried unto thee, O Lord, and said * Thou art my hope, and my portion in the land of the living. 7. Consider my complaint * for I am brought very low. 8. O deliver me from my persecutors * for they are too strong for me. 9. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks unto thy Name * which thing if thou wilt grant me, then shall the righteous resort unto my company. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

Anthem (9.00am): Cantate Domino (Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni)

Cantate Domino canticum novum; laus ejus in ecclesia sanctorum. Laetetur Israël in eo qui fecit eum, et filii Sion exsultent in rege suo.

O sing unto the Lord a new song: let the congregation of saints praise him. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: and let the children of Sion be joyful in their King.

Psalm cxlix. 1-2

First Reading (6.00pm): Proverbs 4.1-18 Listen, children, to a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight; for I give you good precepts: do not forsake my teaching. When I was a son with my father, tender, and my mother’s favourite, he taught me, and said to me, ‘Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom; get insight: do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever else you get, get insight.

8

Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honour you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a fair garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.’ Hear, my child, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. When you walk, your step will not be hampered; and if you run, you will not stumble. Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble. For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.

Here endeth the First Reading.

Second Reading (6.00pm): 1 John 3.16-4.6 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us – and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming; and now it is already in the world. Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Here endeth the second reading.

Please let us have any wines you wish to donate, from one bottle to a case. If the bottle is a fine wine and you wish to be recognized for your contribution please let us know your name, and the name of the wine.
