10/17/2017WILLMARIONCOOK(1869-1944):SHOWSLISTandSONGSandINSTRUMENTALNUMBERSPeterM.LeffertsUniversityofNebraska-LincolnThepresentmaterialsupplementsmyon-linedocument“ChronologyandItineraryoftheCareerofWillMarionCook.”Thatputintosomekindoforderanumberofbiographicalresearchnotes,principallydrawinguponnewspaperandgenealogydatabases.Itisoneinaseries---“ChronologyandItineraryoftheCareerof”---devotedtoasmallnumberofAfricanAmericanmusiciansactiveca.1900-1950.Inthoseotherdocuments,compositionswereinterleavedwithotherkindsofreferencesfollowingachronologicalsequence.InsteadofdoingthesameforCook,hisshowsandsongsandinstrumentalnumbers,spanningacreativecareerofalmostahalfcenturyhavebeenlistedhereinchronologicalorderasaseparatedocument.Thereaderiscautionedthatthisisnotfinished,polishedwork;itrepresentsworkinprogress,completewithinconsistencies,repetitions,missingdata,andtheoccasionaltypographicalerror.Iinvitequeries,amplifications,andcorrections,whichmaybedirectedtoplefferts1@unl.edu.ThisisafirstdraftofOctober2017.--------WillMarionCook(1869-1944)wasaconsummatemanofthetheatre---acomposer,conductor,arranger,orchestrator,producer,director,librettistandlyricist.Crucialtounderstandinghiscreativemusicalstagecareeristhathemostlyfashionedcompilationscores,consistingofsongsbyothers,togetherwithoriginalensemblenumbersbyCook,allofwhichhethendevelopedatlength,arranged,andorchestrated.Insomecases,hecontributedafewsolosongsofhisowncomposition,butinonlyafewinstances(e.g.,Clorindy(1898),TheSoutherners(1904),Darkeydom(1915)andprobablyafewothermini-musicals)didhewriteallofthesongsforamusicalshow.Grantingthisoverallpicture,whenasongtitleremainsunidentifiedbelowinthelistofsongsassociatedwithagivenshow,itmaywellbetheworkofCook.Inoneofthegreatironiesofmusicaltheatrestudiesingeneral,andtheappreciationofCookasacomposerforthestageinparticular,however,itishisensembleandchoralnumbersthatsooftenattractedthepraiseofcommentatorsinhisday,andthesebig,elaborate,extendednumbers,withlyricsspecifictoagivenshowandthusmostlylackinganexternalmarket,wereneverpublishedassheetmusicandarenowlosttous.
