There are over a hundred small islands in the Scillies, but most people only know the biggest one – St Mary’s. I have to get the boat there every Monday. There’s no secondary school on Tresco, so I stay at the Five Islands School on St Mary’s all week. I come back to Tresco every Friday. About 200 people live on Tresco all year, so everyone knows everyone very well. This means it’s a very friendly place to live. The tourist season is starting in two months, so hundreds of tourists are arriving soon. Last year, my parents built two self-catering apartments next to our house. Our first guests 4 are staying there this year – so I have to make their beds and do the hoovering all summer! Tresco is only a few kilometres across 5 . I love walking in the beautiful Tresco Abbey Gardens – they have over 20,000 different trees and plants 6 there – everything grows well here because Tresco has a warmer climate than most of Britain. Sometimes it can be difficult to live on an island. We have to walk or cycle everywhere – there are no buses or cars on Tresco! There aren’t any sports centres or good shops on Tresco either. But I’m happy here. And this Christmas we’re visiting London, for some sightseeing and shopping! Will Macpherson – Barra, Scotland I live on Barra, one of a group of islands called the Outer Hebrides, in Scotland. About 1,200 people live on Barra all year, and most of us speak English and Gaelic, the old language of Scotland. We are far away from the Scottish mainland 1 – it takes the ferry 5 hours to get here! A plane comes to the island too, but it has to land on the beach because there’s no airport! Our farmhouse is near the only big village on Barra – Castlebay. My parents are busy on the farm now because summer is coming soon. They come home late, so my sister and I have to tidy the house, walk the dog and do lots of other chores. In the summer, lots of tourists visit Barra. They stay in campsites and hotels around the island. They go walking and visit Kisimul Castle and the small museum on Barra. Some tourists and local people go surfing too, but you must be a good swimmer, and you mustn’t go into the water without a wetsuit 2 – it’s really cold! Winters here are freezing cold, and there isn’t much to do, but I love this island. Will Macpherson – Barra, Scotland

I live on Barra, one of a group of islands called the Outer Hebrides, in Scotland. About 1,200 people live on Barra all year, and most of us speak English and Gaelic, the old language of Scotland. We are far away from the Scottish mainland1 – it takes the ferry 5 hours to get here!

Some tourists and local people go surfing too, but you must be a good swimmer, and you mustn’t go into the water without a wetsuit2 – it’s really cold! Winters here are freezing cold, and there isn’t much to do, but I love this island.
