TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

If anything interesting is happening in yourneighbourhood please inform

Mambalam Times.

Tamil Cinema Music 41The explanation why he did not use D. K. Pattammal’s ‘Sri

Saraswathi Namosthuthe’ in ‘Miss Malini’ was given by Vasanyears later in a chat with this writer. “The character Malini isa poor woman who, out of poverty, is forced to seek a livelihoodby going onstage. Her father is unwell and she has no moneyto buy medicines for him. So she takes the test and sings thesong. A person of such background in such a difficult situationwill feel nervous and even scared. And Malini is not a trainedmusician. Such a woman could not be expected to sing withsuch class, perfection and brilliance which Pattammal defi-nitely had and revealed in her singing. Malini could never singlike that! That was the reason I did not use Pattammal’srendering and got a regular playback singer, T. V. Ratnam, tosing that song instead!. A convincing explanation from aserious filmmaker!

Pattammal sang songs in Tamil and Sanskrit in Chittoor V.Nagaiah’s Telugu film classic “Thyagaiah”. And a few otherforgotten films.

Because of her family background, tradition and Brahminmiddle class values, Pattammal never sang love duets andhardly saw the films in which her songs were featured! After sherose to dizzying heights of success and fame in the Carnaticmusic world, she moved away from films. Though she had sungin too few films, her songs of Bharathiyar in “Naam Iruvar”shall ever remain immortal melodies!

Papanasam Sivan - A Cinematic PerspectiveIf Tamil film music is today part of life among Tamilians

anywhere in the fast-shrinking world, a good part of the creditshould go undoubtedly to Papanasam Sivan. Classical CarnaticMusic maestro, legend in his lifetime, legend that still lives evenafter his departure for the yonder blue and beyond, a savantof music hailed as “Thamizh Thyagaiah”, his contribution toTamil cinema, its music, and more more precisely its songs, isrichly outstanding. Indeed his body of work in cinema awaitsa proper, full length and in-depth study. He truly laid the firmfoundation for film songs to become popular during the 1930-1940s almost single-handedly. Besides, he made Carnaticmusic popular among the common folks with his scintillatinglymelodious film songs based on traditional Carnatic raagas.

If a list of the immortal melodies of Tamil cinema is taken,a good number of them of the early decades would be hiscreations: ‘Radhey Unakku Kopam” (Chintamani), “NatakameUlagam” Chintamani)”, Gnana Kann Ondru (Chintamani),“Sivaperuman Kripai” (Satyaseelan), “Maa Ramanan UmaRamanan” (Seva Sadanam), “Manamey KanamumMaravathey” (Savithri), “Manmatha Leelayai” (Haridas),“Krishna Mukunda Murarey” (Haridas), “DheenaKarunakaraney Nataraja” (Thiruneelakantar),“Characharangal Varum” (Thiruneelakantar), “Un AzhagaiKaana” (Thiruneelakantar), “Unnai Kandu Mayangaatha”(Ashok Kumar), “Satrey Sarinda Kuzhaley” (Ambikapathi),“Vadhaname Chandra Bimbamo” (Sivakavi), “KavalayaiTheerpathu Naattiya Kalaiye” (Sivakavi), “Soppana Vaazhvil”(Sivakavi), “Neea Illaamal Anuvum Asaiyumo” (Pankajavalli),“Enthan Idathu Tholum Kannum” (Sakunthalai). And dozensmore! Papanasam Sivan created them all!

In recent years, two of his film songs “Maa Ramanan UmaRamanan” and “Manamey Kanamum” are sung regularly byClassic Carnatic musicians in their concerts and have wonpopularity.

Indeed not many are aware that “Maa Ramanan” in Hindolamwas sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi in K. Subramanyams hit film“Seva Sadanam” (1938)!

Cinema began to talk and sing Tamil in 1931 with H. M.Reddi’s “Kalidas” produced in Bombay by the Indian filmpioneer, Ardeshir Irani, the maker of the first Indian talkingpicture “Alam Ara” in the same year. It inherited the legacy ofTamil theater where songs ruled the roost . Everybody sang:the hero and heroine, message-bearing maids, comedians andall the king’s men and women. Even the villain sang, whileapproaching to dishonour the heroine, in praise of her bodilyassets, and the rare joys and rapturous thrills awaiting herthanks to his macho power! Even a dying man would sing beforehe took his last breath! (To be continued)

TALK, TALK, TALKTall friend and his short daughter walked in one recent

evening when all Chennai was agog on the post-Jayascenario on who will bag the TN throne. All that we couldmake out was that the Governor was waiting for a signalfrom Heaven. This being an ‘adult only’ show, my friend’sdaughter had not even switched off her phone when shewalked in and continued her mumble on the electronicdevice for about an hour ignoring the tea and eats placedbefore her.

We adults had little to talk about and the small talklasted just a couple of minutes. Failing to elongate it, Iembarrassingly suggested a session at the TV room to seewho is in or out or who has devised a cinematic escape fromKoovathurso as to be present at the swearing in of whom-ever is pitch forked to be in the CM’s chair.

The TV gave no clue of who is the cleverer one and wewent back to the drawing room only to find the girl still withthe phone fully dawdling away to the unknown caller. I nowknow that the chap who cursed the world with the mobilephone was the greatest scientist since Newton whostumbled upon the Theory of Relativity. The girl spoke foranother hour and it was only when the battery died that hertalk too died.

I gave her a long glass of orange juice and a small cup toher father. He said,” the recharge costs me half my pensionevery time she touches the phone”.

I think I am the only guy around who does not use thiselectronic marvel that makes blood pressure rise, comeday or night. Otherwise I would have been tempted to calland greet Edappadi saying, “Eda, how does it feel to be CM?”

Don’t have a mobile phone!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, Brindavan Street Extn. is an arterial road connecting WestT. Nagar with Mambalam and Ashok Nagar.

Apart from regular vehicles, school buses, heavy vehicles andMTC buses also use this road, and traffic is heavy during peakhours. The road margins are used permanently for parking carsand trucks thereby reducing the carriageway.

Free flow of traffic is affected and pedestrians are forced to walkin the middle of the road thereby putting their lives at risk.

Resident associations and individuals have appealed to trafficauthorities several times to enforce ‘No Parking’ rule on the roadbut to no avail. About two years back, the police convened ameeting in which this grievance was raised and the authorities hadthen promised that they would allow parking only on one side ofthe road. This was welcomed, but nothing happened afterwards.

I request the authorities concerned in the Traffic Cell toimmediately implement ‘No Parking’ rule in Brindavan StreetExtn. to ease traffic flow and make it safe for pedestrians. S.Krishnamoorthy, 4, Mathanghi Flats, 27, Brindavan StreetExtn., West Mambalam

Be wary of phishing over phoneSir, The other day, a caller, identifying himself as a senior SBI

official, told me that my debit card has been blocked. When Iasked him what he was talking about, he stated that my SBIDebit card has become invalid. Suspecting foul play, I told himthat I do not have a bank account with SBI and disconnectedthe call.

I then personally went and met the branch manger and toldhim about the unsolicited phone call. He checked my accountand told me that my debit card was active and said I did the rightthing by cutting the call. He further stated that no bank officialwill solicit any financial/bank information over phone.

He explained further that such callers would misguide onewith sweet talk or threats and try to extract details like cardnumber, ATM pin/password by promising to revalidate thecard, and misuse it for swindling money from the account or doonline purchases. I am writing this letter to warn readers, especially unwary senior citizens, to beware of such criminalswho try to extract banking information over phone. V. S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Permanent exhibition on 5000-year Tamil historySir, After reading an online article, I recently went to see the

permanent exhibition on the ‘History of Tamil Culture’ in theInternational Institute of Tamil Studies, Taramani.

The exhibition encompasses 5000-year-history of Tamil cul-ture. IITS was established in 1970 to do research on Tamil cultureand to propagate the language. The wealth of information at theexhibition about the rich Tamil history left me stunned. I neverknew that our culture was so advanced that ancient Tamils couldweave cloth so fine that yards could be packed in a matchbox, thatthey compared pinpoint surgery to a bird picking fish from deepwaters and painted planets on the ceilings of their bedrooms.

The exhibition, through pictures, artefacts, inscriptions, mod-els, maps, implements and manuscripts, explains the evolutionof Tamils as a settled group, their inventions to make life comfort-able, their superior talent in weaving, growing crops, trade, oceannavigation, state administration, advancement in medicine, watermanagement and formation of a society. The other attraction isthe mini theater where short films, videos and clippings of outculture through sculptures and murals from temples are shown. The exhibition is divided into five galleries. Tholkappiar Arangamdisplays art forms. Thiruvalluvar gallery displays metal craft/agriculture, education, medicine and weapons. Kapilar galleryshowcases implements and exhibits on temples and gods. AvvaiyarArangam is all about the life-like depictions of historical eventsin the life of kings and Ilango Adigal gallery is about ship-buildingand sail-weaving. A mini lighthouse is also displayed here.

I encourage everyone, especially students, to visit the exhibi-tion to know about the rich history of Tamils. R.Shanmugasundaram, N Block, East Anna Nagar
