When Lauren’s ex-husband dies in a terrible accident, she

has to cooperate with the woman she dislikes the most—her former husband’s “trophy” wife—for the sake of her own daughter.

Streetwise Lauren and snooty Jessica tolerate each other in the company of Emily, the teenage daughter. But when the trio uncovers unseemly secrets about the dead man they thought they knew, they have to work together in order to save their lives.

Widows-In-Law, the latest in thrillers by Washington Heights author Michele Weinstat Miller, is a fast-paced page-turner by Blackstone Publishing. The culture site Crimereads.com selected it as one of the most anticipated crime novels of the year.

Miller said the story idea began percolating after her own sister’s husband passed away. Her sister and the second wife both raised Miller’s niece. “It was not a natural relationship,” said Miller. “I thought of all sorts of crime scenarios around it. I would snarkily say to my sister, ‘How’s the

widow-in-law doing?’ That’s where the term came from.”

In the new novel, Lauren views the second wife Jessica as shallow and doesn’t really want her daughter raised by her. But she doesn’t want to disrupt her education by pulling her out of a stable Westchester school.

“The first wife is desperate to have her

daughter cared for,” Miller said. “She has regular working-class concerns about taking care of her kid while still making money herself.”

On the surface, the fictional women are very different.

child abuse prosecutor and a Democrat. Jessica lives in Westchester. Lauren lives on 181st Street in Washington Heights.

Though Lauren resents Jessica, she doesn’t actually hate her. Her husband Brian was a serial philanderer. The marriage was in bad shape even before he met Jessica; their relationship was merely the straw that broke the marriage’s back. Ultimately, Lauren is glad the marriage broke up because she didn’t have the strength to kick her husband out.

Lauren is the child of addicts and suffered abuse as a child. “Her back story is that she was in the mindset that the abusive home you know is better than the unknown,” explains Miller. “As the child of addicts, she was a homeless teenager. She’s halfway grateful, although disdainful of the second wife.”

Lauren thinks Jessica – whom she feels has a perfect pedigree and a perfect body – has never suffered a day in her life. Later she finds out that is untrue. Throughout the book, both female protagonists discover each other’s hidden flaws and strengths.

When Miller isn’t writing novels, she’s a high profile attorney. Miller is the Director of Enforcement for the New York City Conflicts of Interest Board. “I have jurisdiction over everyone from the Mayor down to the sanitation workers,” she said.

Miller has devoted her life to public service for the past 25 years. Like her character Lauren, she was also an attorney and later Associate General Counsel for the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS).

It‘s been seven years since Miriam Domenech had a job. A

mother of two, she wanted to return to work but her skills were out of date.

After six weeks of intensive Word, Excel and PowerPoint training, she can confidently tackle any spreadsheet or presentation that comes her way.

“It was such a wonderful experience,” she said. “I can’t wait for the job fair.”

Domenech was one of 12 women graduating from an Income Building Program on March 5 run by Win. Win, or Women In Need, is a non-profit organization and the largest provider of shelter for homeless families in New York City. With 10 locations city-wide, it serves approximately 10,000 homeless women and children annually. Last year, the Income Building Program served about 3,175 clients.

Dr. Darlene Williams, Win’s Chief Program Officer, said, “Families come to Win, and although every family’s story is different, they all need a little support.”

At the graduation ceremony, Win President and CEO Christine Quinn said stable employment keeps families out of shelters. Win partners with hotel unions and food industries to prepare women for jobs in those fields. It is also developing a program for training home health aides. “We want to make sure our Income Building Program is targeted and specific. It’s not just resume writing or interview training. It’s very targeted to a particular workforce and particular jobs.”

Computer training is Win’s newest initiative. Quinn, former Speaker of the New York City Council, said, “Moms have said to

us, ‘I’d like to do this—this is the kind of work I’d like to do.’ And it’s thrilling to me that Win can be responsive.”

Funding for the program was provided by the United Nations Federal Credit Union and The Francine A. LeFrak Foundation

the real estate tycoon Samuel J. LeFrak, also has a history of working with women in need. Ten years ago she founded an initiative, Same Sky, which works with genocide survivors

in Rwanda. The women are provided with tools and training to make jewelry. According to Same Sky, the women earn eight times the median Rwandan hourly wage. The Foundation also works with Hudson County Jail in New Jersey to provide training and education to female ex-offenders living in half-way houses.

“I was fortunate enough to come to Win’s benefit event last year, and this is the first donation from my foundation to the Women In Need shelter. It’s exactly what we love to do. Our dream is to train and empower as many women to get jobs, to follow their progress and the impact they make,” she said. “They are our first graduates and it’s very exciting. We have a whole course of graduates coming up at Win.”

A century? So ten years ago.

When Violet Cave celebrated her 110th birthday, numerous family members flocked to her side to wish the matriarch a very happy birthday on Thurs., Feb. 28th.

The supercentenarian is the oldest resident of ArchCare’s Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in East Harlem.

Cave, whose favorite foods include platters of chicken and turkey, is a regular churchgoer and attends all of the center’s film screenings.

“If anyone has a party, I go,” she said.This past Thursday, the party was her own,

and her family, together with the ArchCare team members who care for Violet, joined to mark the occasion.

ArchCare, one of the nation’s largest Catholic healthcare organizations, provides home and community-based and residential care to individuals of all faiths, including at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Center.

Cave was born in Barbados in 1909. Her family moved to the Panama Canal Zone when she was five. Her father brought ships through the Canal, said her son Norman Cave. Violet Cave worked in a U.S. commissary as a stock clerk.

Like his grandfather, Norman Cave has an affinity for ships. He was in the Merchant Marines for 32 years, and sailed around the globe three times, visiting nearly every country. His mother was also an adventurer. Violet, along with her two sisters and a cousin, traveled all over the world, including Europe, China and Japan.

“You name it, they have been there,” he said.

Norman Cave established a home base in New York in 1955. He moved into a huge apartment at 770 St. Nicholas Avenue at 147th Street. “I had a seven bedroom apartment,” he said. “You wouldn’t believe it, but I paid $59.50 a month.”

Not long after, his mother joined him in New York. Norman is Violet’s only son. She has four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Valerie Cave-Lloyd, 46, is one of Cave’s great-granddaughters.

Violet, along with her cousin and her sisters, were a big influence in her life. “Growing up, they reminded me of the Golden Girls,” she said. “They did everything together, they traveled, and always went on cruises.”

According to Valerie, Violet was probably most like Sofia’s character. “She had that quick wit,” said Cave-Lloyd.

Some of her fondest childhood memories are Sunday dinners at her great-grandmother’s Harlem apartment. “Baked barbecue chicken, rice and beans, potato salad and fried plantains,” she said. “And her beautiful china. It was so nice. I didn’t want to go home.”

Robert Kirton, a second cousin, also attended Cave’s birthday party. “She used to take care of me when I was a baby,” he said. “I’m 85. I’m the oldest person here – after her son. He’s 87.”

Kirton’s wife Jannett is a professional baker, and has baked Cave’s birthday cakes for the past 20 years. Cave’s favorite is a

yellow cake with buttercream frosting and a pineapple filling.

Jannett Kirton said she’d known Cave nearly her entire life. Kirton, originally from Panama City, first met her husband during a summer vacation in the Canal Zone. The families lived across the street from one another. “My aunt said, ‘I don’t want you talking to that young man.’ So I came to New York in 1956 and we met again. It was supposed to be,” she said. “I went to a birthday party, and there he was.”

Anew Trump administration rule that would prevent

family-planning clinics from referring women to other providers for abortions is receiving heavy criticism from groups such as Planned Parenthood.

Under the rule, issued on February 22, Planned Parenthood and other providers would be banned from performing abortions or making referrals at the same facilities where Title X services like birth control, mammograms and cancer screenings are performed.

Detractors say that the so-called “gag rule” will prevent patients from receiving medically accurate care, and harm low-income women who rely on the family clinics.

“This is a gag rule because what President Trump is doing is to put a gag on doctors like me to prevent us from providing our patients with full and accurate medical information,” said Dr. Leana Wen, President of Planned Parenthood, in a radio

interview. “So if you are a woman who goes to a health center that receives public funding, you cannot be referred to abortion care, even if your life depends on it. This gag rule is unethical and unconscionable.”

On February 25 Planned Parenthood NYC Action Fund staged a rally at City Hall to denounce the new rule. The event drew elected officials, city agencies, women’s rights advocates and other supporters, led by First Lady Chirlane McCray.

“This gag rule is about control. They want to control our choices; they want to control our bodies,” McCray said.

“The Title X gag rule to remove funding from clinics that provide a range of critical reproductive health services, including abortion, will turn back the clock decades in providing healthcare for women,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “Now is the time to stand together and fight for our reproductive freedom.”

Planned Parenthood, which stands to lose $50 to $60 million in federal family planning dollars, said it would fight in court to block the rule. Wen explained that the organization would refuse to apply for Title X funding if the rule is enacted.

FUN FACT: In 2006, Netflix ran a contest to improve

its recommendation system. To protect the privacy of customers, it released a random sample of ratings and replaced names with numbers.

But data scientists identified those individuals by comparing rankings and timestamps on IMDb.com (a movie review site).

It’s hard to make personal data anonymous. When the Census Bureau publishes data

at the tract and block level, it can be easy to identify individuals if too many statistics are published. For example, if only one person lives on a block, that person’s identity is obvious. If there is only one person under three or over 100 on another block, that’s also identifying information. Publishing it could be a potential violation of Title 13,

But the Census Bureau is all about statistics. The 2010 Census collected six main

stats per person: address, sex, age, race, ethnicity and relationship to person one (the first person listed on the form). It counted a total population of 308,745,538 living in 116,716,292 households. The Bureau published more than 7.7 billion statistics in 2010, or about 25 per person.

“If you know any math at all, then you realize you can create a system with 25 billion simultaneous equations and roughly 1.8 billion unknowns and get a solution that matches our published statistics. We call that database reconstruction,” said Simson L. Garfinkel.

Garfinkel is the Census Bureau’s Senior Computer Scientist for Confidentiality and Data Access, and author of Database Nation: The Death of Privacy in the 20th Century. During a February 5th symposium on data privacy at Rice University in Texas, Garfinkel laid out 21st century methods for protecting individual privacy.

In the past, the Census Bureau took the information of highly identifiable households and swapped that information with other households. The benefits of swapping are

But swapping isn’t foolproof. If someone really wanted to reconstruct the database, swapped data wouldn’t necessarily stand in their way. Using easily available data such as voter registration records could be one way to identify individuals at the block level.

In fact, the Census Bureau employed ten PhDs using a few Amazon Clusters (high speed data processing services) working for about three months to reconstruct the micro-

data from the published statistics. About 50 percent of the results were accurate. “More than 70 percent of it matched exactly if you allow age within one year,” said Garfinkel. “We collect age by two ways; by date of birth and how old you say you are.”

While it took immense computing power and superior technical expertise to reconstruct the data, once the process is known, it becomes easier. “In ten years, it’s a high school science fair project. And that’s the problem,” he said.

Garfinkel called the results frightening, but said swapping was the best available technique at the time.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has announced

the arrests of Washington Heights restaurant owners for allegedly stealing $160,000 in employee wages.

Co-owner Manuel Hernández and manager Mohammed Harb of Parrilla Latin Bistro, located at 3920 Broadway (near 164th Street) are charged with repeatedly failing to pay nine restaurant workers for hours worked, in addition to scheming to defraud those workers by continually promising the employees eventual compensation.

Two other owners, Jose Hernández and Gino Hernández, were not present in court and will be subject to arrest and arraignment on a future date, according to a press release from the Attorney General’s office.

Manuel and Jose Hernández are separately charged with failing to secure workers’ compensation coverage on two separate occasions.

According to the felony complaint, workers at Parrilla including servers and cooks, some of whom had worked for the diner for over seven years, were paid far less than minimum wage at

daily, not hourly, rates and were often not paid at all. None of the workers received overtime pay of one and a half times their pay rate when they worked more than forty hours per week.

An investigation revealed that the defendants made repeated promises to the workers that payment was imminent and asked the workers to be patient. However, after the workers waited week after week, payment was sporadic or never came at all.

Many of the employees returned to the restaurant to demand their back wages after ending their employment but defendants continually told employees to return at a later date to receive their payments, which did not occur.

“Stealing hard-earned money from workers will not be tolerated by this administration,” said James. “My office pursued this case on behalf of workers who claim that these employers exploited their trust and good

will and denied them the fair wages that all New Yorkers are entitled to. We will never hesitate to investigate any company that is accused of stealing from their workers.”

If convicted of the top counts against them, the defendants face up to 15 years in prison and payment of back wages to their employees.

OMG… I just finished The Force by Don Winslow and I have now happily fallen into a Don Winslow rabbit hole reading everything from the prolific novelist. The Force is a raw, unflinching look at an elite NYPD task force based Uptown. The novel does not sugarcoat the rampant racism, corruption and malfeasance. It exposes all to sunshine, and it has rocked me to the core. While a work of fiction, the novel is based on the real gangs and undercover cops that are at war and sometimes collaborate with one another. I could not put the book down and devoured it in a matter of days.

Malcolm Punter stood firm on a patch of dirt, grinning.

Shovel in hand, Punter, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement,

Inc. (HCCI), was helping to break ground on a development project that would bring a 136-unit residential building uptown – with all of the units made affordable for seniors.

“It’s immensely important for the community,” Punter said of the project, which has been dubbed Victory Plaza. “It guarantees that seniors helped build this community will be able to stay here.”

Located at 11 West 118th Street, Victory Plaza will include 41 units set aside for formerly homeless seniors and is expected to be completed by December 2020.

The project is a collaboration between HCCI, Camber Property Group, and the

city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wed., Feb. 27.

Victory Plaza will feature community space and an outdoor garden, as well as case management and specialized services for residents.

“Victory Plaza will provide state-of-the-art senior housing serving some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers” said Rick Gropper, Principal at Camber Property Group. “With on-site social services and curated

indoor and outdoor amenity space, our residents will live in comfort without concern about the rent burden.”

The nine-story building is being constructed on formerly underused land owned by the city.

Molly Park, Deputy Commissioner of Development for HPD, said the agency has financed more than 10,000 new affordable apartments in the last year, and preserved 24,000 other units.

“We’re working hard to make sure that we’re building for a real range of New

Yorkers, from those struggling with homeless, to working families and to the seniors who built the city into what it is today,” Park said.

The $65 million project is financed by HDC, HPD and Wells Fargo. Units in the building will be offered to individuals and families earning up to 50 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI), approximately $36,550 for an individual.

Founded in 1986, HCCI is a coalition of religious congregations that works to create affordable housing and improve opportunities for economically disadvantaged New Yorkers.

The group’s real estate arm has produced over 3,000 units of affordable housing in the Harlem community.

Punter said that more must be done to assist Harlem’s substantial senior population, and combat fears of displacement spurred by nearby rezoning.

“[This] represents a strategic victory for our community,” he said.

“Each time we have a groundbreaking, it’s a celebration,” said Joan Dawson, PhD, Board Chair of HCCI.

She said the group is looking to branch out to do similar work in other states.

“We have developed a model that we believe other communities can follow so that they too can provide middle- and low-income housing for the residents who are

across the country being pushed out of their communities,” she said. “We believe that we have something that’s very valuable.”

This week is 2019 Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

Championed by the National Eating Disorders Association, with the theme “Come as You Are,” programs around the world are hosting awareness raising activities and connecting people who might be struggling with eating disorders to others who can help.

I have worked in this field for decades, focusing particularly on identifying risk factors and developing effective treatments. Despite dramatic increases in understanding of eating disorders, I am struck by the ways in which myths still dominate the public discourse.

Myth 1: You can never really recover from an eating disorder. This is frankly untrue. Most people recover: up to 80% of patients who receive and complete eating disorder treatment will recover. There are a wide variety of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders, including cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and family-based treatment. The cost of the myth that recovery is elusive is that if people think they cannot get better, they are less likely to pursue treatment, so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Myth 2: Eating disorders are restricted to rich white girls. It is correct that Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are more common among females, but the rich, white part does not hold up. Moreover, a growing number of men have eating disorders. Men represent almost half of all

individuals with Binge Eating Disorder; 2 out of every 10 cases of Bulimia Nervosa; and about 1 out of every 10 cases of Anorexia

Nervosa. Whereas girls and women report higher rates of weight dissatisfaction

as well as dieting and purging to control weight, boys and men are more likely to report binge eating

Over the past ten years, boys and men represent one of the groups that has reported the fastest rise in eating disorders. Eating disorders are also common among LGBTQIA+ individuals. Among men who have eating disorders, 42% identify as gay. Compared to heterosexual men, gay men disproportionately report body image disturbances and eating disordered behavior. Transgender individuals are also at higher risk for eating disorders. In 2015, transgender students were most likely among undergraduates to have been diagnosed with an eating disorder in the past year.

These data make it abundantly clear that it is important to screen for eating disorders among females, males, and non-binary individuals to ensure that everyone receives equitable access to treatment. Perpetuating the myth that eating disorders are restricted to rich white girls increases barriers to treatment seeking for many who could otherwise benefit.

Myth 3: Anorexia is the most common eating disorder. It may be the most iconic, but it is actually the least prevalent of the eating disorders. In the United States, about 1 out of every 100 women will suffer from Anorexia in their lifetime. Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Unspecified Eating Disorders (conditions that have symptom patterns similar to, but not exactly the same as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, or Binge Eating Disorder) are all more common than Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa is serious and can be life-threatening and needs serious attention.

Eating disorders come in many forms.

Invisible no more.

City Councilmember Ritchie Torres has introduced legislation that would allow New York City to provide certification for LGBT-owned businesses.

“The truth is that LGBT businesses are invisible to our government,” said Torres.

The bill, introduced during the Council’s stated meeting on February 28, would permit the city’s Department of Small Business Services (SBS) to certify these businesses, similar to the way the agency already does for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE’s).

It would also require the city to publish a directory of LGBT-certified businesses.

Certification of for LGBT businesses would allow them to compete for contracts, while bolstering equality in the city, Torres said.

Torres noted that the city of Nashville, TN has LGBT certification, as do the states of Massachusetts and California.

“We know that there are government

agencies and corporations that are looking for greater LGBT contracting in their procurement, and we know that there are LGBT small businesses that want more government and corporate clients,” he explained. “A certification program is meant to create a bridge between these two goals. This is a win-win.”

He said the bill would also represent “the latest stride in legislating LGBT equality.”

Jonathan Lovitz, Senior Vice President of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of

Commerce (NGLCC), said there are more than 100 LGBT-owned businesses that are M/WBE certified by the city.

“This city already has a mechanism in place to help other diverse communities,” he said. “If you include them, why not include us? LGBT people

are a part of every other diverse community in this city and they deserve that fair shot.”

Sacred Walker, the founder of wellness company Kuumba Health, said the legislation would allow business owners be recognized for all that they are.

“We need to take the LGBT out of the

shadows, and it’s time to recognize that those that I serve, when they see me, they see me as bridging the gap, because I’m showing up as a minority, as a women, and as an LGBT person,” she said. “This is a momentous occasion.”

Lovitz said a separate certification for LGBT-owned businesses could be a selling point for owners who don’t want to solely identify as a woman under the M/WBE certification.

“You could have people coming forward who didn’t feel comfortable before,” he said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has set a goal of granting 30 percent of all city contracts to M/WBEs by 2021.

The Mayor’s Office said it was currently

reviewing the proposed legislation.“We believe all New Yorkers should be

given a chance to participate in our economy, which is why the Department of Small Business Services provides a host of resources that help a variety of entrepreneurs establish, grow and sustain their businesses,” said City Hall spokesperson Raul Contreras.

At an unrelated press conference, Councilmember Helen Rosenthal suggested that SBS also should perform certification for businesses owned by people with disabilities.

“I think that the city needs to make it easier for all New Yorkers to do procurement with the city,” she said. “I’d love a full push into that community. There are a lot of small businesses that want to get off the ground there.”

This is Miller’s second book. The first, The Thirteenth Step: Zombie Recovery, is an apocalyptic tale where only those with an

addiction gene can survive a zombie attack. Apparently zombies can’t smell addicts (or their children), so if they keep quiet, zombies won’t notice them. It’s both a love letter to the recovering addict community as well as a satirical take on some of the more cult-like recovery groups in New York. It earned recognition as an “Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards Quarter-Finalist” in 2013.

Despite the attendant duties of motherhood and a high-power career, Miller gets in at least an hour of writing every day. She writes on her laptop during her commute from Washington Heights to Chambers Street every morning, and during the trip back. She says the train just puts her into the zone.

“The funny thing is, with all of the train delays, I won’t even notice if I’m stuck in a tunnel. A lot of times I will get off the train at 8 or 8:30 and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I must have been stuck on the subway,’” she said.

Miller also writes at home on weekends. While her husband watches a game and her sons play video games with friends, she’s on her computer. “Sometimes I write when there are eight teenagers in the room,” she said. “For some reason, there are certain noises that don’t disturb me—like the sound of happy kids.”

Héctor Xtravaganza had a larger-than-life personality. Bold, beautiful and wildly creative, he was Grandfather of the House of Xtravaganza and a consultant for the FX television show Pose.

Born Héctor Crespo, he arrived in New York in the 1970’s. As a homeless young man, he found a niche in the growing ballroom scene and was featured in the documentary Paris is Burning. He was a founding member of the House of Xtravaganza, one of the first Latinx houses that dominated clubs and balls in the largely African-American ballroom scene.

He passed away on December 30. The cause of death was not revealed.

Friends and family will celebrate Hector’s life on March 6 at El Museo del Barrio.

G Xtravaganza, an associate and close friend of over a decade, said the upcoming event touches on many aspects of his life. “It’s Xtravaganza, so it will be over the top,” he said.

As Father and later Grandfather of the House of Xtravaganza, Héctor “adopted” many LGBT youth. The familial role meant he offered advice and helped with balls, costumes and life in general.

“For me, Xtravaganza is a home; not a

house, it’s a home,” explained Héctor in an Aperture magazine interview in August 2018. “It gave me a platform to believe in family, whereas my biological family rejected me from the beginning. This really began to be a place where I feel like I belonged, and still belong.”

G said when he lost his apartment, Héctor took him in.

But we need to move from spotlighting this single condition to lighting the whole stage so that we better identify and integrate care for all who suffer from eating disorders.

Myth 4: Obesity is an eating disorder. When someone's weight is higher than what is considered a healthy weight for a given height, the person is described as being overweight or obese. Body Mass Index, or BMI, is often used to describe overweight status (BMI is 25.0 to < 30) or obese (BMI is 30 or higher). It is true that most individuals who present for treatment for Binge Eating Disorder are at higher weights than would be ideal, but in the general (non-treatment-seeking) population, this is not the case. Today, there are many online BMI calculators for people to find out where they fall. Obesity describes a physical state of adiposity, not a mental disorder. There are many illnesses that can be associated with being obese so it is an important marker of health, but not necessarily an indication of an eating disorder, and the majority of people who are overweight or obese do not meet criteria for an eating disorder.

Myth 5: Eating disorders only

SKINNY from p10 exist in Western cultures. Hilda Bruch's publication of The Golden Cage in 1978 is often referenced as the start of the modern study of eating disorders. The focus was on

Anorexia Nervosa in Europe and the United States. That was 40 years ago and since then, pretty much anywhere we look, we find eating disorders. In general, eating disorders increase as societies modernize, industrialize and globalize. Societies in transition mean changes in gender roles, food supply, physical activity and beauty ideals – all of which impact risk for eating disorders. Dispelling the myth that the West has a monopoly on eating disorders will facilitate global learning and early intervention in places where eating disorders are emerging.

Eating disorders come in many forms. They impact a wide cross-section of the

population and exist around the globe. Most importantly, eating disorders are treatable, and getting help sooner rather than later bodes well for recovery.

Shontae Usman, ArchCare Recreation Therapist, has known Cave for three years. “It’s really quite remarkable how she has been able to persevere. She has seen quite a few world events,” she said.

Cave is friendly, vivacious and has definite opinions about what she does and does not like. She enjoys singing and is a member of the choir.

“Any kind of party or event, she is there,” Usman said. “I let her know I dressed up for her today. Her comment was, ‘You like nice.’ And the next thing was, ‘How do I look?’”

Cave is the senior center’s oldest resident, but another member will be 110 years young in May.

“They both are alert and oriented,” noted Usman. “Aging doesn’t necessarily take

away all of your cognition. People are still able to recall family members, names, places, and experiences. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to see some of our older generation pass some of that down to us because once they leave this earth, we don’t have that anymore.”

Norman Cave said he wasn’t exactly sure of the reasons for his mother’s long life. “I guess when you live a happy, good life, it brings longevity.”

“She just enjoys life,” added great-granddaughter Cave-Lloyd. “She doesn’t let anything bother her. That’s probably her secret. She just keeps going and smiling every day.”

In New York, Planned Parenthood serves 52 percent of all Title X patients, 83 percent of whom have incomes at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty level.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who participated in the City Hall rally, has threatened to sue the Trump administration over the rule change.

“The Trump Administration just enacted baseless regulations pushing an anti-choice political agenda on families across the country,” James said.

“These new rules are dangerous and unnecessary, and will prevent millions of Americans from obtaining the care they need and deserve,” she added. “New York will not stand by as this Administration puts New Yorkers’ health at risk for politics, and we will take legal action.”

This time, the Census Bureau is using a technique called differential privacy.

Differential privacy works by adding noise. Noise, basically an irrelevant set of information, is injected into the data to obscure the individual’s confidential answers.

A formula determines how much noise to add for any desired privacy outcome. Hackers can still reconstruct a database, but they won’t know how much of the information is accurate.

The Census Bureau created its own differential privacy algorithms. It generates varying levels of statistics for each of the national, state, county, tract and block levels. “If there are a lot of people, the statistics are pretty accurate. If there are not a lot of people, the statistics become less accurate. That’s the secret.”

Simspon said the data will be as accurate as it needs to be for legal purposes. “But it’s not going to be more accurate. So there is this public policy trade-off between accuracy and privacy loss, and the data will be accurate enough.”

Each data set will have its own epsilon, or the determinant of how accurate data will be in terms of privacy. “You look at the marginal social benefit and you rate it against the marginal social cost,” Garfinkel said. The Census Bureau’s Chief Data Scientist John Abowd calculated the allocation of federal funds using data at the school district level. “The marginal social benefit is that the money gets allocated properly, and the marginal social cost is that

people are subject to identity theft. Doing that, they actually found a correct value of epsilon for that data set, which is pretty cool.” Ultimately, the Census Bureau’s Data Stewardship Executive Policy Committee decides how private the data should be. The committee is headed by a presidential appointee.

The Census Bureau will also tell users how accurate its data is. “We didn’t ever do that in the past. We gave people a measurement error,” Garfinkel said. “But we didn’t ever tell people how much error was introduced by the swapping. And some of our data users have assumed there was no error introduced by the swapping. Like that Committee.”

One of the biggest challenges in creating privacy is the lack of computational infrastructure and the lack of trained data science PhDs. “It’s really, really hard to get this stuff right,” he said. Much of the information obtained from the American Community Survey’s 80 questions is used to weight the Census information.

He added that the decennial Census is the Census Bureau’s simplest data product. “We ask each person 10 questions. Everything else is dramatically more complicated.”

offered G, who said his great memory and natural storytelling qualities also made him an unofficial oral historian of the ballroom scene.

Héctor was a deeply creative person. Just before he passed away, he worked on window displays for Bloomingdale’s with G.

“We were so behind,” G said of the project. “It was so nice, because we would always finish our looks. Some people will finish each other sentences; we would finish our looks.”

If G saw a fabric, Héctor could envision the final garment. They worked well together.

“It was just a dream, to be honest with you,” he said. “We literally finished, and he wasn’t feeling so well and he went into the hospital.” Right after that, the work won the Platinum Award in the annual “Winning Windows” from design:retail Magazine, a design industry publication.

“There’s a bitter sweetness to that award,” he said.

Héctor also loved creating extravagant production numbers for balls. Once, for a “Face” category, all of the House members emerged from a sauna and the club filled with steam. “Everybody was wrapped in towels,” G recalled.

“I think what I will miss about him, not only from a creative standpoint, [is] there was never enough rhinestones,” said G. “You can never have too many. I’m never going to forget that. We would layer on necklaces upon necklaces and stack bracelets and glue rhinestones.”

Héctor’s generosity of spirit included an appreciation of excess. “If anything, I’m going to miss feeling normal, because with him I felt normal. I could be so over-the-top, and he got it. He was down for all of it,” G said.

“Usually, people are telling me to tone it down. He was definitively telling me not to. If anything, do it even more. It’s all about excess. I’m definitely going to miss that. He made me feel so normal with his craziness. When he was around, it was like he was validating in the sense that he approved,” G said. “I’m going to miss that.”

Quinn said 1,600 families sleep at Win shelters every night. “But a lot of people also don’t know that of all of the people who will sleep in shelters in New York City tonight, 70 percent are families with children,” she said. “This is the heart of the problem. We are not going to end homelessness until we address and make a priority of families with children who are experiencing homeless.”

In addition to computer training, the program offers job preparation skills.

Nadenin Ouattara, who is originally from the Ivory Coast, went to several public libraries to get help with resumes, cover letters and interview skills. “But here, everything was in the same place so it was wonderful for me,” she said.

English is not her first language, but the program sharpens grammar and speaking skills. Not only did Win provide transportation to and from the classroom, there was also childcare for her seven-year-old son.

In her native country, Ouattara is a medical doctor specializing in occupational health. In order to practice in the U.S., she needs to

pass a licensing exam. But personal problems intervened and prevented her from moving ahead with her goals. “If I can resolve all of my

issues, I would love to find a job,” she said. “I am so happy; you don’t know how happy I am to be in this program.”

Ma’at Jackson worked with the women in groups and also individually. Jackson, who has a PhD in language and literacy from Fordham University, said one of the biggest issues the women face was lack of confidence. “Being in a shelter is stigmatizing, and your self-esteem shifts.”

She called the program transformational. “When I asked [participants] for one word that would describe you, no one said intelligent,” she said. “I found that to be so ironic because we don’t see ourselves, even professional women, as intelligent. Once I got them to give me a positive word, then the ball started rolling. If you speak to them now, one of the first things they will tell is: I’m intelligent, I’m motivated, I’m a team player.”

Britany Oliveras said the program was very helpful, especially in terms of emotional support. “They are there every step of the way,” she said.

Jackson noted that even though Oliveras has two children, ages one and two, she attended the program faithfully every day.

“Perfect attendance?” said Quinn. “Bosses love that.”
