colony of

was augmented by
the arn^TO^alter Scott
Wilkerson
whose
activities
had been
centered in Warren county
for some years and whose career
is
expressive
of the
possibilities
of country life
when
directed by a well trained
mind
an earnest
purpose and a
keen
appreciation
of its benefits and prerogatives.
Mr.
\Vilkerson
repi^sents a widely
known
family
in this
part of the
Miami
valley and one
whose members
have
been men
of worth
and reliability in the various occupations and
callings
of life. He
was
born
on
a
farm
in
Washington
township Warren county
O.
in 1855
a
son of James H. and Sarah
A Wilkerson. The
family
has
been represented
in
Warren
county
since
the year
1802
when
the
paternal grandfather
of
Mr. Wilkerson John Wilkerson drove
overland with
his
family
from
his native
place
of Boonsboro
Ky.
and
settled in the eastern part of the county. There he became
a farmer ofsorne pretensions accumulating a large tract of land and
rounded out his career in the pursuits of agriculture. He was one
of
the
real
pioneers
of his
locality
and
a
member
of the
sturdy crew
who assisted jn the original development of various parts of the
great and fertile valley of the Miami. On the pioneer farm settled
by his father during the early days James H. Wilkerson was born
in 1816
He
was
brought
up in
the midst of pioneer surroundings
and early learned the meaning of hard work and the value of indus
try and
when he
came
to
his majority was well trained
in body
and mind to carry on the same kind of labor to which his father
had devoted his
life.
His
career
was spent entirely in the tilling
of the soil and his industry and able management of his affairs
enabled
him
to
become
a leading
farmer
of his
locality.
He died
in June
1905
highly respected in the locality
and Mrs.
Wilkerson
also a native of M^arren county born in 1820 passed away durinc^
the
same
year. Walter Scott Wilkerson grew up on his father s
farm
and
received
his
education in the
public
schools of
Washing
ton township. In 1883 he left the parental roof and went to Macou-
pin county
111
where he
engaged
in farming on his own
account
and meeting with some success
remained
in that locality until 1902.
In that year
he returned
to the
county
of
his birth
and
bought
a
farm
near
Springboro. on
which he continued to
carry on opera
tions until the fall of
1917.
At that time he disposed of his interests
and removed to Springboro where he has since lived in comfortable
retirement. Mr. Wilkinson represents the substantial and reliable
element of the town county and region and his life affords an ex
ample of moderation thrift and public spiritedness. He is a direc
tor of the Farmers Bank of Springboro
and
in business
and
financial
circles his nartie
is synonymous with
integrity and absolute fidelity.
He is
a
Republican
but politics
has had
but an indifferent
part
in
his
life. In 1887 Mr. Wilkerson
was married

ter of Joseph and
Rebecca Crane.
Mr. and Mrs. Wills
have four
children, namely: Mattie
M..
David Lester, Joseph Walter and
Harley E. Politically Mr. Wills is a Republican, and he has
served
as township trustee for several years, to the entire satisfaction of
his constituents. Thoroughly imbued with the welfare of his home
town Mr.
Wills
is building, at his own expense, a community house
40 by 70 feet to cost about 5,000. The beliefs of the Universalists
accord
with his own, and he is a supporter of that
organization
in
his neighborhood. A man of high principles, he has endeavored to
live up to them, and to give to everyone the same square deal he
asks from them, and his standing is deservedly high.
Jacob C. Wilson. Both business affairs and the agricultural
industry have received impetus in Warren county through the op
erations and activities of Jacob C. Wilson, the proprietor^ of 125
acres of well-improved land in Union township and one of his com
munity s most energetic and enterprising citizens. Mr. Wilson was
born in 1876, in Newcastle county, Del., a son of William an d
Anna
(Chandler) Wilson, and a grandson of James Wilson, the patentee
of an improved powder keg. In
1880
James Wilson, with his own
family and that of his son, William, came to Ohio and settled at
South Lebanon, where father and son engaged in the manufacture
ofthis product. They built up a goodbusiness and continuedthere
in all their lives, William Wilson surviving
his_
father some years
and passing away in January,
1911.
The business is still being
conducted in the family name, the proprietor being John W. Wilson,
an uncle of Jacob C. Wilson, at Kings Mills. Jacob C. Wilson was
but four years of age when brought to Ohio, and here received his
education in the public schools. As a lad he worked in the factory
of his father, in manufacturing powder kegs, and in connection with
this enterprise founded and built up a good general store business,
of which he was the proprietor for several
3 ears. Eventuall}^
he
disposed of his interest in the latter and invested his capital in a
canning business. While the direction of this plant is in other
