John was born in Midale August 20, 1953 and raised on the family farm south ofHalbrite. He attended school in Halbrite and finished his high school in Midale.John attended the University in Saskatoon until he heard of some farm land forsale. He purchased the farm that he operated for 42 years. John and Brenda weremarried in 1974. Always involved in sports, John played and coached hockeyand baseball at all age groups even before his own children were involved. In1979, son Colin was born, followed by Conrad in 1983 and Craig in 1986. Hewas always their first coach and their biggest supporter, his motto was “if a job

was worth doing, you do it to the best of your ability”. Because John had been involved with cattlehis whole life and a former 4-H member, it was only natural the boys were also involved. He was Cymri 4-H leader for over 10years and also served on the local rink board for many years organizing many hockey tournaments, ball tournaments and fundraisers. Supporting your local community was important to John. The drought and grasshopper years in the 1980’s changed life on the farm and in order to support his growing family John wentto work full time for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance. He worked for them for 10 years. John loved the work and the people he met but hated being away all day from his farm. The choice had to be made – sell the cattle and continue working away or quitthe job and expand the cattle herd and try to stay on the farm. The decision was easy for him. In 1988 John purchased nineCharolais bred heifers from Lorne Kramer. This led to the creation of Wilgenbusch Charolais which was the focal point of John’slife for 27 years. These cows turned out to be very productive with great temperament and longevity. LKC Miss Kramer 15Xremained on the farm for 17 years and has over 25 descendants still in the herd today. The first purebred sire was MDY Zorro 1Z,purchased from Claman Charolais in Estevan. John started showing in 1992 at AG-EX in Brandon, and in 1995, attended CanadianWestern Agribition for the first time. Over the next 10 years John raised and sold bulls by private treaty. In 2003, remembered inCanada as the ‘year of BSE’, our cattle industry was basically shut down. John adhered to the adage “if life hands you lemons,make lemonade” and the decision was made to hold our own bull sale on the farm. The first annual ‘North of the 49th” Bull Salewas held the following spring. 2003 was also important at Wilgenbusch Charolais for another reason. John won the opportunityto select a free bull at the Keystone Connection in Brandon. He had his choice of a number of champions as voted on by otherbreeders. He chose a tan Charolais bull, Campbell’s Bert 81N and red genetics were introduced into the herd. In 2004, he followedthis up with the purchase of CRYS 40P “Pierce”, a red bull raised by Crystal D Charolais who was Supreme Champion of theRegina Bull Sale. In 2006, Lang’s Stock Farms, who had developed a small herd of quality red genetics wanted to disperse. Johnwas fortunate enough to acquire their herd and Wilgenbusch Charolais could then offer both red and white genetics. John workedhard to acquire quality females from various breeders, purchased the purebred operations of LA Land & Cattle Co. and CSSCharolais, purchased semen from industry leaders and practiced an extensive embryo program. With the addition of many leadingsires John felt that we had improved the quality of our own herd and contributed to the quality of Canadian genetics. John andBrenda travelled to many countries around the world looking at and promoting the Charolais breed. Because of his outgoingpersonality, John made many friends worldwide. His love of sports led to a life-long love of the Roughriders and the Blue Jays.The cows took a back seat to the excitement of enjoying a Jay’s game.John was happiest when talking to other breeders about their latest calf crop, showing people through the bull pen for the upcomingbull sale or touring visitors through the cow herd. John served on the Saskatchewan Charolais Association for many years andthen the Canadian National Charolais Association for several more. Although the females he raised were marketed off of thefarm and in the National and Sterling Collection sales, John had a dream to host his own female sale. This year, we celebrateJohn’s life, the legacy he has built and many wonderful years in the cattle industry by hosting our first ever Volume I Female Saleon the ranch where it all began.
