Utopia with Milk and Sugar – Café Tamar Blindtext dritte Zeile möglichUtopie mit Milch und Zucker – Café Tamar Blindtext, Maximum: mit dritter Zeile

Although a suicide or rocket attack could change their lives at any moment, many Israelis have adopted a relaxed way of dealing with these existential threats. They discuss them over a coffee in the famous Café Tamar in Tel Aviv. Among the regulars we find Rafi Kishon, the son of Ephraim Kishon and graphic artist David Tartakover. A portrait of everyday life in a part of the world deeply marked by fate and steeped in history.

Afghanistan – The Lost Mines of the PharaohsAfghanistan – Die blauen Steine der Pharaonen

Afghanistan – one of the most remote and dangerous countries in the world. Yet for the last 20 years, through the turmoil of Russian invasion, retaliation, civil war and religious jihad, an American has traveled through Afghanistan in search of fabulous precious stones. This film is the story of this man and his achievements. It follows his journey to the mines he has rediscovered and helped reinvigorate. The lapis lazuli mine is the oldest on the planet. Over 6000 years ago, the precious blue stone was dug by hand and traded to Egypt of the pharaohs.

Almendro – Tree of LifeAlmendro – Baum des Lebens

The Almendro must be the most impressive of all the jungle giants in Costa Rica’s rainforest. From root to top, this unique tree offers habitats, shelter and nourishment to an incredible number of creatures. Whenever an Al-mendro goes down, almost the entire community goes down with it, de-monstrating the fragility of interdependent systems. A dramatic example of this principle is the Great Green Macaw. Wherever the tree disappears, the parrot no longer is found.

Alpine Meltdown5 Grad Plus

The climate is changing, global temperature is rising. The impacts are already apparent, especially in the mountains but also in the lowlands. The perma-frost zone is shifting higher up and the masses of snowmelt whooshing from the glaciers to the valleys are already increasing incessantly. Rivers are going to rise up to powerful floods and dwindle down to extremely low waters the next second. “Alpine Meltdown” takes us to a future world, pre-senting changes that have already occurred and pursuing the question how the alpine landscapes are going to look like at the end of the 21st century.

Ants – Nature’s Secret PowerAmeisen – Die heimliche Weltmacht

They wage wars and administer medicines; they are farmers and graziers. They live in a world of coded communications and lightning chains of com-mand, secret poison mixtures and prodigious strength. They have inhabi-ted our planet for millions of years. And yet no living creature seems more alien to us. UNIVERSUM cameraman Wolfgang Thaler and Bert Hölldobler, a leading authority on ants, bring us face-to-face with the mysterious world of these social insects. Bert Hölldobler, Professor at the University of Würz-burg, threw open the doors of his laboratory for the first time to make this documentary. With the latest high definition technology, Wolfgang Thaler has shot some of the most spectacular images of these fascinating creatu-res ever shown, pairing cutting edge technology with his wide experience of macro filming.

Appalachia – The Endless ForestWilde Appalachen – Die Berge der Cherokee

The Appalachians form a vast mountain chain, stretching along the Eastern side of the USA, from Georgia in the south to Maine in the north. Along much of their length they are clothed in rich but little known woodland, se-cret worlds of rivers and waterfalls, caves and forest glades inhabited by bears and deer, raccoons and possums as well as dozens of other, lesser known creatures. These are the most diverse temperate forests on Earth. Human history here is just as rich as the natural history. Long before Colum-bus landed in North America, Cherokee Indians moved into these forests, european settlers followed, forming their own unique culture. Over the course of a year, the film looks at these extraordinary forests through the eyes of some of the people living there.

Arlberg – The Hidden ParadiseArlberg – Das verborgene Paradies

Snow masses pile up in abundance on the deep snow-covered slopes. The wind has created bizarre snowdrifts on the steep mountain ridges, and further below, the Swiss pine carry the weight of this sparkling splendor. The Arlberg is the embodiment of an idyllic winter and the cradle of alpine skiing. However, this famous ski resort that connects Tyrol with Vorarlberg, offers a lot more than expected. A bit of untouched nature has been preser-ved in the hardly accessible valleys and the cliffy massifs.

In the deepest of winters, far away from the slopes and ski routes, avalan-ches thunder into the valley, however they bring with them neither destruc-tion nor death. On the contrary, the winter is the toughest time for ibexes and chamois. Now the meager fodder is buried deep under the snow and the animals can only find nutrition there where avalanches have cleared the slopes from snow. The winterly splendor is only one facet - the famous face of Arlberg, its true fascination, remains hidden under the snow almost half a year long.

Baja – The Other CaliforniaBaja California – Das andere Kalifornien

Baja California stretches 750 miles southwards from its famous neighbour, the State of California. On either side of this narrow strip of land lie the rich waters of the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. The peninsula, for the most part, is desert. Stark but beautiful, its raw landscape, naked rocks and giant cac-tus contrast with the crystal blue waters of the sea that surrounds it. Isola-ted from other deserts Baja and the Sea of Cortez are home to weird plants and unique creatures that evolved here coping with this most extreme of places. This is a rare opportunity to see the Boojum, for example, that looks more like a 10 meter high upside down parsnip than a true plant, the blue-footed boobies that each year perform their comical courtship or Lizards that eat flies so salty they would kill them, had they not enlarged nostrils with salt glands.

Bohemia – A Year in the WetlandsBöhmen – Land der 100 Teiche

In Bohemia, at the very heart of Europe, south of the Golden City of Prague and guarded by medieval castles, lies a hidden mosaic of lakes and gently flowing rivers, of misty forests and mysterious peat bogs. This important wetland, shaped both by nature and centuries of influence by man, is a magnet for huge flocks of birds and home to an amazing diversity of plant and animal life. In spring there is an explosion of life as the trees are weig-hed down with nests of cormorants, egrets, herons and storks. With the arrival of winter the landscape becomes silent and desolate. Otters are hunting fish under the ice of frozen lakes while White-tailed Eagles soar over gaps in the ice, targeting fish and birds. Since his early childhood wild-life cinematographer Jiri Petr has spent much of his time in this wildlife paradise. Together with him, we will explore this remarkable habitat and observe the changing faces of nature during the course of one year that inspired many artists and writers alike.

The Bohemian Forest is a region in the heart of Europe still having the last remnants of the original European prime forest. The location of the Bohemi-an Forest at the former Iron Curtain had the result that both forms of coun-try side are united here: ancient cultivated landscape on the one hand and natural landscape on the other. Borderland – Nature DividedGrenzland – Die geteilte Natur

When the “Iron Curtain” between former Czechoslovakia and Austria fell around 20 years ago it did not only represent release for human beings. The border’s dissolution was also an epiphany for the flora and fauna of the two neighbouring countries. Although the same basic environmental conditions prevailed, development was at times completely different. The long term treatment, usage and exploitation of the environment, dictated as it was by differing political and economic concerns, meant that certain plants and wild animals in one region could spread unhindered while just a few kilo-metres away, on the other side of the barbed-wire fence, they remained totally unknown or had long been exterminated.

The common history of both countries and their unique “Natural Islands” of moors, marshland and disused border country in the “Dead Zone”, as well as the search for rare animal species which found refuge there, forms the focus of this Universum voyage of discovery.

The Carnic Alps – Nature’s Treasure TroveDie Karnischen Alpen – Ein Gebirge voller Kostbarkeiten

Austria’s southern region boasts a mountain range that seems to consist of nothing but borders: the Carnic Alps. This is where cultures, languages and lifestyles meet, where Mother Nature provides a glimpse of the history of our planet Earth and where a soft breeze from the sea hits the cold Alpine wall. It is a place of close encounter of three languages: Slovenian, German and Italian.

Apart from the geographical border position, it is the steep mountain cliffs, the narrow valleys and the diversity of these borders that have shaped people’s mentality. At a distance of approximately 60 miles from the sea, the impact on the weather is obvious. When the clouds come pushing to the North from the Adriatic Sea, they eventually hit the main ridge of the Carnic Alps, which forces them to stop for a rest and shed rain. Finally, the geological history of Mother Earth has formed its own boundaries here bet-ween the earth’s ages.

Carnuntum – Metropolis in the Land of the BarbariansCarnuntum – Weltstadt im Land der Barbaren

According to accounts by the Roman historian Paterculus, in the year 6 A.D. a Roman army under Tiberius put up its winter camp in the Celtic Noricum. The exact site was called Carnuntum, and it was the moment of birth of a legendary Roman metropolis upon the Danube “in the land of the Barbari-ans”, built as a bastion against invaders from the North.

Two thousand years later, this lavish documentary drama by multi-award winning producer Kurt Mündl portrays the history of and life in ancient Carnuntum.

Living in New York since more than fifteen years, Curt Faudon has a deep connection to this entrusted space. This documentary portrays the power-ful intermezzo of seasons at Central Park and follows some people with very special ties to the park.

City of Steel, City of LifeLinz lebt!

Linz, the capital of the Province of Upper Austria, serves as European Capi-tal of Culture in 2009. In recent years, Linz has blossomed into a model European city that places its technology- and knowledge-based urban in-dustrial centre at equal footing to its manifold cultural events. Against this dynamic backdrop, Linz has similarly managed to demonstrate respect to nature by including ecological factors on all levels of urban planning. Linz 09 – the city in which industry, culture and nature melt into one.

This film takes the viewer on an adventure trip of a special kind by following the everyday lives of wild animals that have chosen, of all places in the world, Linz as their habitat. It ventures through the Old Town with quiet paws and then takes you by nosedive to the old tower of the cathedral or in agile leaps through the botanical gardens. Linz is presented through an ex-traordinary angle – whether sniffed out by dogs and cats, seen by falcon or fish or experienced by bumble bees or foxes.

The Climate Change BugDie Exoten kommen

For some time now the question of whether or not climate change is taking place has been more or less settled. The issue that remains largely unans-wered however is: how will we cope with climate change and what effect will it have on our flora and fauna. Already there are signs that serious eco-logical and biological changes are taking place, not only far away in exotic regions of the world, but also right on our own doorstep, here in Europe.

This documentary seeks to explain broadly which animals and plants are most likely to spread across Central Europe and shows what we could ex-pect running into in a few years’ time. One kind of tick, for example, which originally comes from Africa and causes malaria-like symptoms, is beco-ming more and more common. And this is not the only “exotic” species that are increasingly surviving the milder winters and proliferating, confronting us with a slow-going, almost hidden change in European wildlife.

Death at Dawn – The Emperor’s Last BattleshipTod im Morgengrauen – Das letzte Schlachtschiff des Kaisers

Premuda, June 10th, 1918 6:05 am: The Szent Istvan is sinking. The most modern battleship of the K.u.K. fleet has been hit by two torpedoes on its maiden voyage.

A camera team aboard the Tegetthoff was sent out to film the first deploy-ment of the new battleship. The planned scenes of celebration would instead become a one of a kind documentation of a horrific event. Their original footage forms the basis of this documentary, which recreates and analyses the tragedy. Historical reenactments, filmed on historic ships in Rostock and Athens, help define the atmosphere of the film.

Using 3D animation and a diving expedition to the wreck of the Szent Istvan off the coast of Croatia, the filmmakers attempt to resolve the last myste-ries of the ship’s destruction.

The Dragons of the CanariesDrachen der Kanaren

Kurt Mündls sensational documentary covers its subject from ancient seafaring myths and legends that related stories of the „Dragons of the Ca-nary Islands“ as early as 2,000 years ago, up to the current state of research on these unique reptiles. Spectacular shots also illustrate the trying jour-neys undertaken by Oskar Simony at the end of the 19th century. The first giant lizard specimen captured by Oskar Simony in 1889 for the scientific world is still at the Vienna Museum of Natural History. But Mündl‘s film also demonstrates that animal species do not always benefit from being disco-vered: Only a few decades after Simony‘s sensational discovery the giant lizard of El Hierro was considered lost or extinct. Too many scientists and collectors had helped themselves to material from the small population.

The first-ever filmings realised by Kurt Mündl and his team also include a filming of the hatching of a giant lizard from start to finish. In addition to biological details on these lizards Mündl‘s film includes dramatic re-enactments of Oskar Simony‘s expeditions and the life of the „Guanches“, the Canarian aborigines, who hunted lizards to eat them. Animations of top quality are another asset of this film

Drakensberg – Africa’s Dragon Mountains Im Bann der Drachenberge

A dragon hatched from the volcanic furnaces of Gondwanaland. Ancient al-most beyond comprehension, yet a living thing. And vast, stretching across a subcontinent, its spine arching above the clouds …

No lucky dragon, this. Starvation festers beneath the shimmering green of its skin. But to the creatures that live along its flanks, it can be a bountiful provider as well as a remorseless destroyer. Today we call it the Drakens-berg, or “Dragon Mountain”. “Drakensberg” is a dynamic documentary journey through the life of this ever-astonishing mountain. Drava – River of Peace, River of War Drau – Ein Fluss zwischen Krieg und Frieden

The Drava is one of the last big, partially untamed lowland rivers of central Europe. Whereas in Austria the river is forced into a narrow concrete corset after a few kilometers, the lower reaches of the Drava at the border bet-ween Hungary and Croatia is practically untouched. For years it was cut off from the outside world by the Iron Curtain. At that time only soldiers were permitted to enter the border area. This allowed the areas along the Drava to keep its incredible variety of plant and animal life. Here black storks breed in the solitude of the forest, kingfishers and sea eagles fish in the branches of the Drava and innumerable bank swallows make their nests in the steep slopes rising from the river.

Further downstream, the idyll found an abrupt end during the war at the beginning of the 1990s between the Serbs and Croats. The Kopacki Rit, the flood plains where the Drava flows into the Danube, was right at the figh-ting front. During those years the Kopacki Rit Natural Park lost a great deal of its original natural wealth.

Nature’s process of regeneration, however, will take place during the co-ming decades without human intervention.

First on Mount EverestErster auf dem Everest

In 1953 Edmund Hillary was the first person to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. That is what the history books tell us. However the German researcher, Jochen Hemm-leb, casts doubt on this belief. Just below the summit of Mount Everest he and his team disco-vered the well-preserved body of George Mallo-ry, who in 1924 had made an assault on the peak with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine. Did Mal-lory stand on the summit 30 years before Hillary? To find an answer to this question, in 2010 we follow Jochen Hemmleb on a further risky search expedition on the roof of the world. Using crimi-nological methods Hemmleb and his team hope also to find the body of Mallory’s partner, An-drew Irvine. In 1924 Irvine had a small camera with him, whose contents may provide proof as to who was actually the first person to reach Everest’s summit.

From Drought to DelugeExtrem! – Zwischen Dürre und Sintflut

In the 21st century, the average rainfall will increase and likewise its inten-sity. Many parts of Earth will therefore drown in rain and snow, whilst other parts will dry out. What should we expect? How should we deal with these new conditions? How to adapt to it? One answer can be found there where humankind has already gotten used to exceptionally high rainfalls, there where there is never a drop of rainfall, and there where rain and snowfall reach world records. The French island, La Réunion, in the Indian Ocean offers almost certainly a guarantee for torrential rainfall. When it comes to world records, La Réunion is by far the champion. The big legend amidst the places with the most rain is the city Cherrapunjee in Eastern India. Cherra-punjee is proud to call itself the wettest place on Earth. Here one has to get acclimated to five months of continuous rainfall. According to the most re-cent measurements, the amount of downpour is even increasing. On the other extreme there is the Atacama desert in Chile. It is considered the driest desert on Earth. Allegedly, some places have not even seen rainfall for four thousand years.

In the near future, some of the settlement areas will become uninha bitable, and new land will need to be tapped into because of climate change. Are there any limitations to realizing the impossible? The third part of filmma-ker Udo Maurer’s voyage through the world’s extremes compares life at sea level with the highest mountains of the world. From the lagoons and palm beaches of the South Sea Islands whose highest peak is often only some few meters high to the highlands of Ethiopia at four thousand metres. From the shores of Dead Sea, located at 408 meters below sea level, to the 5400 meter high La Rinconada, the gold miner city, in the Peruvian Andes. La Rinconada is not like any other place, it is the highest inhabited place on Earth. If someone dares to go that long stretch, it is only for one reason: to become rich. In fact, there is gold in La Rinconada – and that attracts adven-turers from all over the world.

From Freezer to FurnaceHeißkalt – Die extremsten Orte der Welt

This is a journey to the hottest and coldest places on earth, where people go about their everyday lives under extreme conditions – and even enjoy it. The Northern Pole of Cold, where the northern hemisphere’s lowest air tem-perature of minus 71.2 degrees Celsius has been recorded, lies in north-east Siberia. The village of Oymyakon is the coldest inhabited place on earth – a real “natural freezer”. Thousands of miles away lies America’s answer to the record-holding Russian village: Furnace Creek, headquarters of Death Valley National Park. In 1913, 56.7 degrees Celsius were measu-red here. But the world’s official hottest place is the city of Al’Aziziyah in Libya, a gateway to the Sahara desert, just 25 miles from Tripoli and the Mediterranean Sea. It holds the world record of 58 degrees Celsius – in the shade! Another infamous blast furnace is the Danakil Depression in the bor-derland between Eritrea and Ethiopia – one of the most forbidding deserts on earth, a vsolcanic wasteland almost 150 meters below sea level, which boasts the highest measured annual average temperature: 34.6 degrees Celsius.

It covers approximately 4 hectares and, with 150 different species, is home to the world’s most complete collection of alpine animals. This makes it purely a themed zoo, where only animals from the alpine area are kept and dis-played – there are no lions, elephants or giraffes here. He developed diving devices like the first hand-held underwater camera and was the first man ever to move free and weightless with a breathing ap paratus in the ocean – a fish among fishes. This documentary includes original footage from the historically unique archive of Hans Hass, whose films reached worldwide attention and won numerous prizes. The Ice Trap – The Tegetthoff‘s Arctic OdysseyDie Eisfalle – Die arktische Odyssee der Tegetthoff

The “Franz Josef Land” archipelago was discovered in 1873 by an Austrian polar expedition. This 90-minute special illustrates the achievements and sacrifices of the ship’s 24 crew members from Istria, Dalmatia, Italy, Hungary, Bohemia and Austria. Trapped in the ice, the Tegetthoff drifted northward, farther north than any human being had ever ventured before. Captain Carl Weyprecht’s decision to abandon the doomed ship and begin the long trek over the pack-ice back through Siberia led to one of the most spectacular achievements of a team in international polar history.

Inn-Side StoryInn – Fluss der Abenteuer

A cascade of water pouring from glaciers and a lake in the high mountains, a water fall tumbling from high up into the valley, a chain of lakes at the base of 10,000-foot peaks, rocky chasms dis-gorging the torrent, drawn-out gravel banks and mudflats, undercut banks and river bends, and extensive riparian forests at the river’s lower reaches: the Inn has many faces to show and an interesting tale to tell. It is the longest tributary of the Danube in Central Europe, flowing through Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria along its 520 kilometer course.

The variety in landscape is reflected in the diver-sity of the flora and fauna along the river: gray-ling and trout swarm in its headwaters, little ringed plovers breed on the gravel banks, dragonflies, frogs and rare water plants populate the oxbows, owls and bats raise their young in the bluffs. Along the river’s lower stretches live beavers, ot-ters, night herons, sheldrakes, goosanders and dozens of other bird species.

It is the river’s indestructible power and dyna-mism, however, which is most impressive: in spi-te of many hydropower plants and dams lining its path, the river still carries more than a million tons of suspended solids a month downstream before it empties its load into the Danube.

Jackals – Out of AfricaSchakale unter uns

In some cultures, jackals were pursued and condemned as pests that fed on parasite-infested carcasses. In others, such as Ancient Egypt, they were divinely celebrated. This documentary accompanies a young scientist, who is drawn to these mythical mammals, and takes us on a journey to explore golden jackals, from Egypt to the barren hills of Greece. Other showplaces are the reeds of the Hungarian Kis Balaton, the Romanian Danube delta, the Austrian alpine pastures and the forests of Croatia, where the jackals share their living space with wolves and bears.

Kamp – A River for all SensesKamp – Ein Fluss für alle Sinne

Far from being a long, let alone a wide river, the waters of the Kamp river feed one of the most fascinating valley landscapes of Lower Austria. From its source to its estuary, which empties into the Danube, the river descends about 745 metres in altitude. A river course like the Kamp’s is a life corridor whose banks line increasingly rare wetlands, marshes, meadows, gallery forests, embankments, jungle-type shrubs and alluvial forests. While small sections of the river course were made a nature preserve, one whole sec-tion of the river was designated to become a “cultural park”. The region is shaped by its long-standing cultural tradition, the perfect soil for wine-gro-wing, and an ever more strongly positioned gentle tourism industry.

The Karst – Life Between Heaven and HellMenschen im Karst – Leben zwischen Himmel und Hölle

A scraggy land of harsh beauty but full of deception as well. This film explo-res the hidden charms of the stony cliffs along the Gulf of Trieste, the original home of the white horses from Lipica and portrays the inhabitants of this Karst region, who are simple people, deeply affected by the vicissitudes of European history and the hardships of life. The Karst plateau, perforated like a sponge absorbing everything that flows through it, provides humans and nature a life amid water wind and stone. Wild rivers roar through the dome-like caves of its underworld, giving an impression similar to Dante’s Inferno. Niko Luin and his wife Kathrina, like many other farmers in the re-gion are avid explorers of the caves. Lake Wörthersee – Where Man and Nature MeetDer Wörthersee – Bühne für Tier und Mensch

Lake Wörther in the Austrian state of Carinthia is not only one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria, but also, in the truest sense of the phrase an

“internationally famous stretch of water”. For over 100 years the lake has been the “stage” for world famous composers, architects and Hollywood stars.

Austria’s first airline came into being on Lake Wörther, and the lake’s ship-ping is legendary.

But away from the hustle and bustle, the scenically charming lake with its islands and peninsulas is an uncharted natural jewel that has been decla-red a „natura 2000“ area.

For the first time this HD production provides a glimpse behind the scenes at the secrets of Lake Wörther.

This film shows the rich water wildlife in Alpine rivers and lakes from both the fisherman’s and the fishes’ perspective. It’s a portrait of a complete river system, following the water’s journey from glaciers through cave systems and canyons through mountain streams, crystal-clear lakes and, finally, down one of Austria’s most beautiful and swift rivers, the Traun, all the way to the wooded wetlands where it finally calms before flowing into the Danu-be. Used for shipping lumber and salt already centuries ago, the river has always encouraged a special union of man and nature. The film takes the viewers on a journey above and under water, showing one of the continent’s most attractive mountain landscapes from the perspective of an Alpine river, its wild inhabitants and its human visitors.

Land of a Thousand VineyardsWeinviertel – Weites Land

Italy, California and South Africa are not the only places famous for their wines. Right in the heart of Europe, Austria can also look back over a past suffused with music and wine, both of which remain inseparably linked to this day. It is the vastness of Austria’s “Weinviertel” or wine growing region that captivates visitors. No other region of Austria suggests this feeling of endless landscape quite so vividly. A soft, hilly landscape, blessed with a warm climate, that is cultivated by humans but has maintained much of its original character – a quiet landscape with a considerable history and hid-den treasures. And the Weinviertel hasn’t been given its name for nothing

Laos WonderlandLaos Wunderland

Southeast Asia at its best. 85% of the country is untouched nature, wides-pread forests, steep mountains and wide river valleys, but also cool high plateaus and savannahs. The primeval forests support a fauna like so-mething out of a fairy tale, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and some of the rarest animal species on the planet. Species never seen by humans are discovered at regular intervals. In recent decades, the few large mammals to be described for the first time were all found in Indochina and experts assume that most of them are at home in Laos: wild oxen such as the saola and kuprey or the truong son munjak. No outsider has ever seen a living specimen of the latter; its existence is only known indirectly, through skele-tons, horns and bag that are occasionally found in remote villages. And there is the Mekong, one of the last untamed rivers on Earth. Fed by hund-reds of tributaries, it is one of the richest freshwater systems on the planet, comparable only with the Congo or Amazon. This is where the Mekong cat-fish lives. At 3 meters long and weighing in at 300 kilograms, this monster must be the largest freshwater fish on earth.

Let it snow!Leise rieselt der Schnee

“Snow is snow is snow” one might be tempted to say. Yet people in the Arctic have hundred of different names for snow while other cultures have never seen it. Nor is snowfall the same as snowfall. In this extraordinary documentary we are going to witness very different kinds and situations of snowing: from howling blizzards to the gentlest and loveliest of weather events, from huge handkerchiefs quietly falling to the needle-sharp attack of hard, heavy grains.

Snow – what is it really? How is it created – naturally and artificially? Thanks to CGI and new camera techniques we can actually see this process for the first time and listen to the incredible, inaudible music of snowfall, of myri-ads of tiny crystals touching and rolling and settling. Each snowflake is unique and bears more secrets than we could imagine. Did you know that different kinds of music influence the crystallization process and the shape of snowflakes? And have you ever imagined that we would be able to pro-duce artificial snow that melts at 30 degrees Celsius? With this in mind: just let it snow!

Lightning ReloadedBlitzgewitter – Himmel unter Strom

Spiral clouds of steel blue and ink black, bolts of lighting stretching for miles casting a spider’s web across the sky, eerie rumblings and thunder strikes freezing one’s blood, accompanied by rain, storms and hail: Thunderstorms are light shows literally off the planet.

These tremendous forces of nature are beautiful and frightening alike … and more than just heavy weather. Recent research data indicate that heavy storms and lightning in Africa are generating the notorious Atlantic hurricanes which hit the Carib-bean and the US coast every summer. The bolts are even connected to climate change and obvi-ously influence earth’s magnetic field. However, up to the present day we don’t know exactly were these lightning strikes come from and how they are created.

These topics are all part of this documentary that will focus on the current state of lightning and thunder storm research using latest digital video technology. It will trace the myth of ball lightning and go into detail of a lightning strike’s anatomy as well as provide answers to sprites, lightning bolts that explode into the depth of space.

Limits of LightGrenzen des Lichts

We recognise our world primarily through the sense of vision yet the light we use to see is only a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum that surrounds us and impacts on our lives. From X-rays to microwaves, from ultraviolet to infra red, we’ll explore the world of colour, both seen and un-seen; we’ll fi nd out what colour really is, how our colour vision works and compare it to that of other creatures, some who see less colour than us – and some who see more. We’ll explore insects that can see into the ultravi-olet, snakes that sense invisible infra-red radiation to hunt their prey, and birds whose colour vision is far more sensitive than ours.

Following the multiple award-winning ‘Limits of Perception’ and ‘Time Li-mits’, this is the third and fi nal part of the trilogy that explores beyond the limits of our everyday perceptions. In a thrilling one hour, this journey through the whole spectrum explores strange worlds. It is a journey through a world we never dreamed existed.

Living for the QueenBienen – Ein Leben für die Königin

The film documents the life of a bee colony for the duration of a year. Part of the colony emigrates and becomes a “wild” colony giving an intimate view of the artistically designed beehive and the bee’s cleverly organised social life: dividing labour, collecting nectar and warding off enemies. The special feature of this production is the very natural effect of the close-ups that give the viewer the feeling of being within the colony, even for rare events. Without having seen it, who could imagine the queen’s “wedding flight” during which the virgin ruler of the colony mates with a drone, a male bee … all this taking place flying at high speed.

Magic of the MountainsIm Bann der Berge

This is the story of a land, where forces of nature are at play – beyond all things that a human can ever dominate or be able to conquer. The birth of Tyrol was one of collisions, where previous far apart continents were conjoi-ned, wedged together and piled up on top of each other. The result is a steep world of diversity on the smallest area: depending on the depth of a valley or the height of a mountain ridge, depending on its direction and position at the edge or in the middle of the Alps, depending on whether its slope is steep or flat, there is a spot in Tyrol that is icy or mild, lush or paltry, dry or full of water. This film presents the fascinating world of the high mountains with all their diverse flora and fauna and the living conditions throughout the seasons.

Mountains in the SunSonnenberge – Von der Rax zur Buckligen Welt

The landscape of southern Lower Austria is characterised by the last undu-lations of the Alps. This film takes a cinematic journey through these so-called “sunny mountains”, showing their diverse nature and cultures in a comprehensive portrait of the region and its inhabitants. Some farmers in the region breed “alpine salmon”, while others have developed a sideline - using traditional methods to extract the resin from black pine trees, which can then be used to produce cosmetics, turpentine and even resin for the strings of musical instruments. The area between the Rax and Buckliger Welt is popular with the Viennese. Almost on their doorstep, the region is a paradise for extreme sports junkies, nature lovers, culture fans and to tho-se looking for rest and recuperation. Foreign tourists also discovered this magnificent landscape many years ago. Experience this scenic treasure in the heart of Europe with its breathtaking panoramas, unique animal and plant life and tradition-conscious inhabitants.

Mount St. Helens – Life from ZeroMount St. Helens – Der Vulkan lebt

In 1980 Mount St. Helens exploded in one of the most powerful eruptions on American soil in modern times. Everything living was buried beneath 300 feet of avalanche debris, covered with steaming mud, topped with a superheated layer of frothy rock. It seemed as though Mount St. Helens might remain wasteland forever. Will nature be able to re-colonise this lost territory? Finding the answers has become the life-long quest of one man – biologist Charlie Crisafulli who has spent almost 30 years on the site. This is the story of nature‘s astonishing comeback to Mount St. Helens – a story of life from zero. For the fi rst time exclusively he will provide an insight into this amazing resurrection. Original natural history sequences using macro-photography capture the fi rst moments of rebirth. Aerial views and archive footage of the crater and the surrounding landscape as well as underwater fi lming combined with state-of-the-art CGI will visualize the ecological mi-racle. “Life from Zero” tells a unique story of determination and perseveran-ce – of nature struggling for survival and one man sacrifi cing all to witness that miracle of nature’s return unfolding.

Mystery of the Fairy CirclesDas Geheimnis der Feenkreise

When it rains substantially in the Namib, a thick carpet of grass covers the sand and stony desert. But this green down is punctuated by bare circular patches, which appear as though drawn by a compass. And there’s not just one or two of them but thousands. Observed from the air the scene could be titled: ‘Red dots on green ground’. These mysterious sand circles appear at around 60 to 120 kilometres inland from the coast from South Africa to Angola, at an altitude of between 500 and 1000 metres. They are bordered by a ring of tall, thick grass, which stands out from the surrounding sparse vegetation. What is so special about these bald patches, which have been given the mysterious name “fairy circles”? Are they caused by particular mineral compounds in the ground? Did poisonous plants once grow there that have contaminated the subsoil? Are they the work of termites? Or is it the impact of meteorites that is responsible? This documentary reveals the stunning secret of the fairy circles.

Myths of the AlpsMythen der Alpen

Since ancient times the High Alps have been a region of extremes: bizarre landscapes, powerful acts of nature and deprivation for both people and animals. In these regions, myths and sagas were especially powerful. Peo-ple tried to deal with those forces of nature by explaining them with arcane tales and worshipping powerful gods to calm their fearful minds. Energy fields, stone altars for sacrifices, healing spring waters – they all have a mysterious code that continues to live on in the traditions and rituals of the communities living in remote villages far beyond civilization. This docu-mentary traces these myths to produce a journey through time to the places our ancestors once worshipped, visiting some of the most beautiful mountain regions in the heart of Europe.

Nature Tech – How Engineers Are Inspired by Nature’s Top DesignsDas Genie der Natur

Why are blossoms never dirty and can we also make our cars that way? Why can geckos walk on the ceiling and can we use their tricks to create better adhesives? Why is the spider’s web toug-her than steel? Exciting new developments in computer technology, chemistry and physics are now enabling us to understand Nature’s designs better than ever before. Scientists are not simply trying to copy nature – they are taking hints, ext-racting principles and applying winning designs of evolution in a new, human context.

“The Magic of Motion” covers Nature’s winning high speed, long range and all-terrain motion de-signs such as Germany’s recent tuna-fi sh sonic jet.

“The Material World” deals with the amazing chemistry, physics and statics of natural materi-als and their transfer to buildings, tools and tech-nical appliances of the future.

“Energy is the Key” focuses on Nature’s energy production and conservation methods and spe-culates on future solutions to one of the most pressing problems of today’s humanity.

Visually, this series is an attractive, fast-paced mix of stunning natural history shots, computer-assisted design and CGI graphics of futuristic in-ventions, ultra-modern, spacy architecture and high tech as well as scenes of the world’s leading designers and engineers at work, all created by the team that made “Limits of Perception”.

“Napoli Dogs” is a soap opera set in the charming harbor side of Naples. More resembling a feature film than a documentary we follow the fate of a pack of street dogs as they struggle for survival. Love affairs and gang raids guaranteed! Seven dogs, utterly diverse characters with diverse looks, are the inner circle of a notorious four-legged street gang, the Napoli Dogs. They are known all around Naples and feared by many. When it comes to staking out their territory, they can be very tough. The perseverance of the scruffy males makes owners of pretty, well-groomed lady dogs shudder. Helplessly, restaurant chefs watch their compassionate guests feed their prime cut steaks to the clever gang.

The film tells the story of runaway domestic dogs braving the city jungle, of their amazing survival strategies and of the rituals reconfirming the bonds between the members of the pack.

Of Graves and Robbers – The Sell-Out of Peruvian HistoryDie Grabräuber von Peru

The arid sand deserts of Peru have been preserving mummies and burial artefacts over many millennia. Recent excavations such as the royal burial chambers of Sipán and the 220 mummies found at the Lake of Condors produced a scientific sensation comparable only to the discovery of the Egyptian tombs.

Starting out from these finds, the movie goes in hot pursuit of what hap-pens at and around the excavation sites of Peru. On the one hand there‘s Peruvian archaeologist Sonia Guillen, who has dedicated her life to the pro-per scientific investigation of her country‘s heritage. Her efforts are fre-quently frustrated by grave looters: entire villages make their living by dig-ging up ancient burying places to get at artefacts which earn the huaceros a few dollars but which bring enormous wealth to international smuggling networks.

Quite often it is the grave robbers who put scientists on the tracks of new discoveries – yet every devastated site is another irredeemable loss of our heritage. The documentary illuminates the criminal entanglements of the international antique market and follows the famous FBI art cops in recon-structing the spectacular robbery of one of the most

O2 – The Molecule that Made Our WorldDer Atem der Erde

Using latest CGI combined with live-action reconstructions, this film follows the journey of a molecule of oxygen, an adventure that takes place over a span of thousands of millions of years. The story begins with the photosyn-thesis of a bacteria – and in doing so it produces the molecule of oxygen gas. The way of the oxygen unfolds and at times it is torn apart and beco-mes part of other molecules. It is involved in the conflagrations that accom-panied the death of the dinosaurs after the great asteroid im pact, then travels through a human body to combine with haemoglobin in the blood and to take part in chemical reactions in individual cells. For a while the oxygen even spends some time as ozone, protecting earth from deadly ra-diation but then connects to a carbon dioxide molecule to help warming earth and bring about unknown consequences of climate change. Following this fascinating story, the film explores key moments in the history of earth and science in an unusual and visual way. “O-Two” is an intriguing and ambitious journey through biology, chemistry and physics.

Ol’ Man River – Mighty MississippiOl’ Man River – Mächtiger Mississippi

There is no river on earth where so many dreams were dreamt, where so many dreams came true or fell apart, where the dividing line between life and death is as thin as on the Mississippi – North America’s great river.

The Mississippi is the world’s third largest river. From the Canadian border to New Orleans, from Helena in the Rocky Mountains to Pittsburgh, it drains 31 US states and two Canadian provinces. Since the first human beings set foot on the North-American subcontinent, the face of the river has changed dramatically.

This epic film shows the great American river in cinematically beautiful ima-ges and emotions. Moving cameras show the endlessness of the land, the impenetrable wilderness and, in stark contrast, the shining steel facades of modern metropolises. The film also reveals a fascinating world inhabited by rare plant and animal wildlife with a distinctly exotic touch. At the same time, it invites us on a journey through history. In several episodes, with the aid of CGI we travel into the past from characteristic sites.

Organic FarmingDer Bauer und das liebe Vieh

Europe’s countryside is largely shaped by agriculture and by highly specia-lized, efficient farms. However, in the seventies of the past century, a coun-ter-movement set in: ecological management became a new topic on the agenda.

The film features an organic farm as it traverses the different cycles of the year, its main protagonists being farm animals and pets as well as wild game that regularly visit its surrounding meadows and fields. The film portrays the behavior and peculiarities of the farm’s cows, pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. Rather than presenting any new livestock species or inaccessible corners of the land, this documentary introduces the viewers into a well known world, that still is full of secrets.

The Otter’s TrailAuf der Spur des Otters

During the mid-80s, zoologists still regarded the European otter as a spe-cies on the verge of extinction. What they did not take into consideration was the fact that the shy aquatic animals are extremely adaptable. Using their intelligence and cleverness, they have been able to re-conquer parts of Europe during the last few years, including their old homeland, Austria. However, their settlements in Austria are small islands and the correspon-dingly small populations are still very much endangered. The documentary tracks down the otter in the Austrian Waldviertel and southern Styria and leads to the extensive areas of ponds in the neighboring Czech Republic and Hungary, which have become a true otter paradise, thanks to devoted nature conservationists.

Pastures in the SkyAlmsommer

A dairymaid in Styria, a sheep farmer in Eastern Tyrol and a shepard in Vor-arlberg offer insight into a life that is characterised through beautiful scenery as well as through a culture immensely rich in traditions. Not only does the spectacular cattle drive up to the Lechtaler Alps, when 450 ani-mals have to make it across a ridge 2500 meters above sea level, impress the spectator. In addition to that, it is the newfound appreciation of the alp as a vacationing place that captures the attention. For example, the rustic huts of Oberstalleralm in Eastern Tyrol are completely booked throughout the year 2007, despite the fact that there are no professional feel good-animators on hand but the main attractions are comprised of a simple wood stove, running water and fresh milk. Poisoned!Vergiftet!

This film takes a look at the various ways poisons have been used throug-hout history, using dramatic reconstructions of some of the most infamous poisonings. But the film doesn’t stop there. Using advanced computer ani-mation, we travel inside the bodies of a victim of the Borgias, as well as Cleopatra, Hannibal, Socrates, Emperor Leopold and a host of other unfor-tunate victims, to witness from the inside how they died.

The film follows humanity’s macabre search over thousands of years for the perfect poison. A poisoner needs a poison that is tasteless and colorless, and therefore won’t be noticed by the victim. It needs to work in low doses, so a poisoner doesn’t have to feed his victim large quantities. And it needs to be reliably and quickly lethal. Finally, it needs to be undetectable after the event, so the poisoner leaves no trail of guilt. In fact, for preference it should mimic the symptoms of a disease, so no-one even suspects poiso-ning. Not surprisingly, such a perfect poison is not easy to find or make, and the search has occupied some of humanity’s finest minds.

Power of the RainbowDie Macht des Regenbogens

The beauty of nature’s colors only becomes fully visible in sunlight, whether it is the splendid miracle of the rainbow or its various different forms in nature; none of the colors is a coincidence – not the green of the leaves, nor the red of blood or the deep black of space. The film gives an overview of the fascinating world of color in all its different manifestations; a journey from inorganic nature to plants, animals and to people. In the light of the sun all colors are contained. How is this possible? In wildlife and nature colors are messages: flowers, for instance, show insects the way to the nec-tar and thus to the stamens that load them with pollen and animals use colors as bait, as camouflage or to ward off enemies. Why does this com-munication works? This documentary tries to explain these questions with all new technology and breathtaking images.

The Prater – The Green StadiumDer Prater – Eine wilde Geschichte

On the paths and alleys where once the exclusive aristocratic hunting soci-ety gathered for light entertainment, today bikers and joggers meet. In the thicket of the meadows, badgers, foxes and deer are wandering around while, by the waters, Mandarin ducks are mating. They were imported for hunting purposes from China more than a hundred years ago and since then have established their place in the landscape. The Danube’s bayous are not only a paradise for waterfowl of all sorts but also a haven for bea-vers, who chop down tree after tree. Life flourishes in the meadows of the Prater, Vienna’s green lung. The 6.000.000 m2 big area of the Prater is full of “animal” surprises and it is exactly here where the 2008 UEFA European Championship will take place. Restless Peaks – The Birth of the AlpsDie Entstehung der Alpen

The history of the development of the most powerful mountain range in Europe that attracts more than 45 million tourists every year was not well researched until fairly recently. Using lavish computer animation, this pro-duction relates the astonishing genesis of the Alps – the slow, gigantic transformation from an ancient land-locked sea into one of the most majestic mountainous regions of the earth.

Radioactive WolvesRadioaktive Wölfe

There have been massive increases in large carni-vores in the nuclear wasteland and Chernobyl has re-emerged as a complete ecosystem and one of Europe’s largest wildlife sanctuaries and yet it’s radioactive. Where humans can’t live, nature is rebounding and somewhere in this vast nuclear wilderness, there are packs of radioactive wolves, living in an archaic structure that has vanished from other parts of Europe.

Before 1986, the zone was heavily farmed and populated, and wolves were scarce. In less than 25 years there are an estimated 300+ wolves ma-king the most of this deceptively beautiful lands-cape. But are these wolves mutants? Have they been affected by nuclear contamination after the ’86 explosion which released 100 times more ra-dio-nuclides than Hiroshima and Nagasaki com-bined?

Biologist Christoph Promberger embarks on a journey to investigate the fate of the wolves and other animals in the contaminated wild lands. To-gether with local radio-ecologists they will trap and collar Chernobyl wolves for the first time and follow their progress through a land littered with plutonium, caesium and strontium.

The scientists must protect themselves from the radioactive dust and contamination, as working with an invisible enemy requires extremely care ful preparations.

Donning protective suits, camouflage gear, Gei-ger counters and respirators they brave the wil-derness where humans were forced out after 25,000 years of continuous habitation, where now the wolf, albeit radioactive, is king.

Return of the Bald IbisWaldrapp – Ein Vogel im Aufwind

Four years ago a group of zoologists ventured out to indulge into a truly crazy adventure. Their ambition: to show a fl ock of bald ibises, birds that have been pushed over the brink by hunting and habitat destruction and only survived in zoos, how to fl y to their winter quarters on their original seasonal migration routes. They accompanied the animals with lightweight airplanes from Austria to Italy – a chaotic event full of mishaps and some successes. But now it appears as though their dreams are about to come true: the comeback of a bird that went extinct in Europe in the Middle Ages. In the previous year two bald ibises managed to fl y back to Austria without guidance. Now, for the fi fth time, human foster parents – 16 people from 4 nations – will once again lead the way for young ibises in completely novel paraplanes covering a distance of 900 kilometres within three weeks. This documentary takes us on a thrilling and humorous adventure introducing us to a very special family consisting of birds and humans.

River without FrontiersFluss ohne Grenzen – Auenwildnis an der March

The Morava river with its forests is one of the most beautiful and ecologi-cally valuable riverscapes featuring the richest biodiversity in all of Central Europe. Like a green ribbon, the riverine forests of the Morava – together with those of the Danube and the Dyje – link the Alps with the Carpathians, forming a bridge between Eastern and Central Europe. The infl uence of the Pannonian climate with its hot and dry summers combines with the slowly receding high waters to form a mosaic of extremely different habitats: moist meadows lie close to sand dunes, riverine forests alternate with dry primeval oak forests. This enormous diversity of habitats creates a refuge for animal and plant species, a specifi c composition that cannot be found in any other place.

Rose – Queen of FlowersRose – Königin der Blumen

Throughout the world, roses speak an unmistakeable language. They have touched and seduced mankind for thousands of years, while their names and varieties reflect contemporary history. One of the most famous varieties – the Gloria Dei or Peace Rose – has elevated the rose to a symbol of world-peace. Being the most successful garden rose of all time this documentary retraces a large portion of the history of rose cultivation in Europe by its means. All of these manmade varieties also have wild rose ancestors – life giving, thorny monsters, which charm us once a year with their luxuriant flowers and perfect beauties.

The film presents the biological features of roses and explains why they are capable of producing such an abundance of varieties. How are humans and animals affected by the composition of the scent of roses? Why do some white garden roses develop red spots when it rains? And why do red spi-ders fall in love with the bikini rose? Besides these interesting facts the environmental significance of roses are also explored, both at home in our gardens and for animals in the wild.

The Roaring MountainsWildes Wasser, blanker Fels – Nationalpark Gesäuse

Nowhere in the Alpine mountains are water, forest and rocks as precipitous, rock faces as vertical as in the Gesäuse National Park, Europe’s largest canyon. “Gesäuse” is a name derived from the rushing noise of the water, the soughing wind that echoes up to the peaks of the north faces of this unique region – home to the myth of the mountain. When the sun rises and ushers in a magnificent day, the Gesäuse projects a perfect image of a mountain. However, in bad weather, the Gesäuse’s walls reflect a scary phenomenon as the speed of the inflowing airmass multiplies. Adverse weather conditions can thus convert the Gesäuse into inferno. Michael Schlamberger, Austria’s most renowned nature filmmaker internationally, listened to the rushing whitewater of the river Enns and conquered the sheer rock walls, chasing eagles and chamois in passing.

Saga of the White-tailed EagleDer Flug des Seeadlers

The sea eagle was once widespread throughout almost all of Europe and graced the coats of arms of many different countries. During the 19th and 20th centuries it was driven to the brink of extinction by hunting, the incre-ased use of pesticides and the destruction of its habitat. This touching animal drama recounts the true life story of one individual bird, observed over the course of a year. Beginning with its birth in a lowland forest in Central Euro-pe the film team follows the eagle’s first outing with its brothers and sisters and subsequent distant migrations to places as far away as Scandinavia. Finally it chronicles its dramatic lead poisoning, recovery and resettlement in a nature reserve.

Sahara – The English Patient’s DesertSahara – Das versunkene Paradies

Even today, the Sahara is full of miracles. Until way into the 20th century, vast areas remained unexplored. In the early thirties, the Austrian-Hungari-an adventurer Ladislaus E. Almásy who later gained world-wide fame as the historical figure on whom the Hollywood movie “The English Patient” was based on, had undertaken several expeditions to various blank spots on the Sahara’s map. Highly awarded film-maker Michael Schlamberger has followed Almásy’s tracks to reveal the most amazing chapter of the world’s biggest desert.

The desert explorer had stumbled upon one of the trickiest riddles of clima-te history. The world’s largest desert must once have been a lush Garden of Eden – a daring thought that raised great controversy with Almásy’s peers. Following his footsteps, Schlamberger searched for evidence from the most thrilling chapter in the Sahara’s natural history.

Salt – Tears of the EarthSalz – Auf den Spuren des weissen Kristalls

There are millions of solutions to the problems of survival but there is only one substance that has awakened all organisms to life: salt. No creature can live without this magic mineral – and no living organism can produce it on its own. Amoebas, algae or humans – all life-forms are completely at the mercy of this simple chemical compound. In all bodies of water on earth, there is salt in abundance, and animals and humans have always been able to extract the valuable crystals from water – directly through their organs or with the aid of evaporation in salt lagoons. But on dry land, the white gold needed to be laboriously mined - sometimes at danger to life and limb. Enormous power and lavish wealth developed in the few privileged areas where salt production flourished.

In its narrative structure the aim of the film is to link the historical aspects of salt production at various locations. The three principal aspects – nature

– man – civilization – are intertwined to form the main thread of the film.

SandstonesIm Land der Sandsteintürme

This documentary is an exploration of our mysterious affinity with nature. It explores our fascination with ancient myths when mankind seemed to have a much greater connection to the environment. With thousands of bizarre sculptures and with a tremendous play of light and form, places like Bryce Canyon or the Goblin Valley have always played an important part in the lives of the indigenous inhabitants. The viewer is going to witness not only a mystical, bizarre world of canyons, the breathtaking beauty of unspoiled nature, but also its myths and secrets. This documentary also gives voice to the original inhabitants of the region (Navajo and Hopi Native Americans), who vividly describe the enormous role that the rock formations play in their lives. For them, the mystery of sandstones goes back before the sha-dow of civilization that covered their beloved homeland.

Sea of Creepy MonstersDie See der kleinen Monster

The Lembeh strait in the northern part of the Idonesian island of Sulawesi is a unique hotspot of marine biodiversity. Countless amazing creatures thrive in the underwater landscape surrounding Lembeh island. During four years a wildlife filmmaker couple spent many months in the region captu-ring hundreds of hours of behavior, lots of it never filmed before. Among other unique behavior the filmmakers were able to shoot an Anglerfish swallowing a Lionfish, a scene resembling Godzilla gulping down Dracula. Elegant seahorses, thumb-splitting Mantis shrimp, and deadly mini-octo-puses are just some of the remarkable creatures traditional underwater films tend to overlook. As most of the underwater drama is hidden from plain sight only the ground-breaking macro photography in this film can reveal the awe and beauty of life in the Reef of Little Monsters.

Secrets of the AdriaticGeheimnisvolle Adria

For a long time, the Adriatic Sea used to be Central Europe’s only link to the orient. This small sea became a symbol of entry to the vast, exotic world, allowing the city of Venice to call itself “Queen of the Seven Seas”. Cultural riches are embedded on the Adriatic’s coast against an unparalleled natu-ral backdrop. On the northern coasts of the Adriatic stretches one of Europe’s largest wetlands, which is not only a paradise for migratory birds and waders, but also the northernmost colony of flamingoes.

This film follows the trail of the highly endangered griffon vultures whose last colonies are to be found on just a few islands and some rocky cliffs of the Dalmatian coast. It reveals a range of animals that even the most tena-cious of Adriatic holidaymakers rarely see, including sand vipers, mongooses and Greek tortoises in the olive groves.

Secrets of the Flooded Forest – Danube National ParkWildnis am Strom – Nationalpark Donauauen

After beginning in Vienna, the Danube riverbank forests extend to the gates of Bratislava, linking the two capitals like a green ribbon, forming a unique wildlife habitat in the heart of Europe. A few years ago a 36 kilometer sec-tion was turned into a national park that now protects the last undeveloped stretch of the Danube river and also the last riparian zone of its size in Cen-tral Europe. In the forests along the Danube the water‘s power is able to influence plant and animal habitats again, shift bodies of water, create gra-vel banks. Everything here is in motion and subject to constant change. Growth and destruction, birth and death are integral to this landscape, and constitute a vital factor for its great diversity of habitats and species.

The variety created as a result is outstanding, as is the sheer numbers of flora and fauna that live here: White-tailed eagles breed in the woods, mud-minnows and pond turtles populate the old arms of the river, beavers build their dams on the banks, and red deer raise their young in the underbrush. The Danube National Park: a hidden wilderness full of beauty and drama, and a refuge for an astounding variety of flora and fauna.

The Secret World of TermitesDie geheime Welt der Termiten

They cannot tolerate sunlight; some of them are even blind. However they are one of the world’s most ingenious builders: Termites. They build high-risers without any technical devices that are, compared to the Empire State Building in New York, 25 times higher. They are the only animals that have managed to build an air-conditioning system without electricity. Their nests are architectural masterpieces that rise up to eight meters from the ground and dispose brood chambers for larvae, corridors for transportation, fungal gardens for nutrition and even emergency exits for hostile attacks.

The team behind award winning documentaries such as “Bees – A Life for the Queen” and “Ants – Nature’s Secret Power” takes us along a journey into another world. Visit the skilfully built termite mounds and experience dramatic and exciting stories in the life of a termite-colony via state-of-the-art macro fi lming technology. SilveradoDer Silberberg

Two places and one mountain in the Austrian province of Tyrol changed the world. They took humankind from the depth of the Middle Ages to modern times. They helped the Habsburgs and the German commercial traders in attaining power and wealth. Here is where 80 percent of the world’s silver supply was mined. Where an instrument of payment was established, the

“Taler”, which would later become the world-renowned “Dollar”. At their peak, these places were the biggest metropolis of the Habsburg Empire – just after Vienna. Today they have sunken into a long sleep: The cities of Schwaz and Hall in Tyrol and the Falkenstein – the “Silver Mountain”.

This film revives the historic lives of these cities by experiencing the day-to-day lives of the miners and meeting Paracelsus, who treated the miners here back in 1533 and worked on his books about their mountain sickness. Also the Nazi’s secret project “Stichling” is uncovered with great detail. To remain unhindered by air attacks, the world’s first operational turbojet fighter aircraft, the “Messerschmitt Me 262”, was built by transforming one of the biggest halls of the ore mine of Schwaz into a production hall. For the first time ever, for this production access is granted to this hall getting to the very bottom of its history.

So Long, Fu LongSo Long, Fu Long

The 2007 birth of a baby panda in Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo caused a fl ur-ry of excitement. Fu Long, the “happy dragon”, was the fi rst baby panda ever to be naturally conceived and born in Europe. From the beginning the black and white bundle of fur was the darling of onlookers and visitors to the zoo. Director Heinz Leger documented this sensation and followed the little one’s development from his very fi rst day. In November 2009 the time fi nally came for the adolescent panda to leave Vienna. This fi lm looks back on the highlights of the past two years, how Fu Long practised getting into his transport crate, and accompanies him on his journey to China. Upon arrival, initially Fu Long will live with other young pandas in a small commu-nity of bachelors before hopefully producing his own offspring in a few ye-ars time and so contributing to the preservation of his species.

They are everywhere – and have been since time immemorial: in the air, in the water and on the land. From the very beginning they have been part and parcel of life. Yet many aspects of these organisms remain inexplicable, even to modern science. Despite their obvious multiplicity, we classify them all in one collective term: fungi. Some 100,000 species have been identified to date worldwide. But the actual number will probably be far higher, because virtually every expedition to tropical countries brings new species to light. Some fungus specialists estimate that there might be around 1.5 million species of fungus on our planet.

The Tiger and the MonkDer Tiger und der Mönch

Wat Pa Luangta Bua is a monastery of meditation, situated far away from any civilization, about 200 kilometers west of Bangkok, and here, silence, peace and harmony reign. Every afternoon, a daily ritual is observed – non-chalant Buddhist monks take their ten 3-5 year old tigers out on a leash for a walk through the bordering region of Burma. They dote upon their tigers, feed them and celebrate them as their most sacred animal. The monks treat grown-up animals with reverence and respect although they cuddle and play with the cubs. The tigers were once the “aristocrats” of the jungle of South East Asia but today, this undisputed ruler of the animal kingdom is one of the most endangered species in the world. Three of the eight subspe-cies are already extinct, a fate that could also overcome the others. Only an estimated 500 to 2000 tigers of Indochina still inhabit the intact jungle regi-ons of South China, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam. This documentary portrays the harmonious relationship between predators and humans without disregarding the monk’s maxim that “a tiger will always be a tiger, even if it feeds from the hand. It will always be a wild animal”.

Teaming Up With WolvesMit Wölfen unter einer Decke

What is the difference between the domestic dog and the wolf if both of them have been raised under the same conditions? What skills got lost and which were gained in the process of domestication? How far are wolves prepared to co-operate with humans, and do they accept domestic dogs as co-operation partners? To get answers to these questions, researchers Friederike Range, Zsofia Viranyi and Professor Kurt Kotrschal have taken up the task – for the first time ever in canid research – to raise a pack of wolves by hand. The Wolf Science Center currently holds three one-year old timber wolves and six pups. In the beginning the animals need extensive attention. The intimate rapport with humans and wolves primarily happens through feeding with the bottle and close body contact at night. It is not yet possib-le to say which task dogs can do better or worse than wolves, if any. Only one thing is clear: wolves act more independent from humans. The film fol-lows the four American pups for a full year and records their upbringing, their progress in the daily work, their social development and their behavi-or in the various testing centers.

Time LimitsDie Grenzen der Zeit

We perceive time in terms of seconds – the length of a heartbeat. We can’t even imagine events that unfold over several days and years or be aware of elementary particles that fl ash into existence for less than a billionth of a second without high-tech camera equipment and exceptional fi lming tech-niques. “Time Limits” uses a combination of dramatic computer animation, amazing real time images and the latest scientifi c advances to give a totally new view of our world and our universe. Specially developed motion-control time-lapse photography will bring to life the slow motion world of plants and the beautiful play of day and night. As the journey continues we expe-rience shorter timescales to fi nd elements that exist for less than a millionth of a second diving into a world of its own. Experience events in a completely new visual way and join the team that made “Limits of Perception” such a success on a fascinating journey to the limits of time.

Tough at the Top Geheimnisse des Eisgebirges

The Hohe Tauern mountain range is a high Alpine wilderness harboring natural treasures. The film shows a series of barely known, extremely shy or rare animals of the high mountains of Upper Austria. It took 2 years to complete the complicated shooting during which the camera team had to cope with harsh conditions to capture an intimate look into the secretive life of these shyest of mountain creatures.

Treasure of the AlpsDer Schatz der Hohen Tauern

When the first humans advanced into the Alps, they encountered dense, primeval forests. Over the centuries, they cleared the woodlands, created fields and pastures, and built their villages higher and higher in the moun-tains. These early farmers were followed by many wild animals that found a new habitat in the changed landscape: wood grouse occupied the forest glades, rock partridges filled the mountain meadows, and red deer popula-ted the alpine pastures. For some wild animals that had been sparse in the ancient forests – like the black grouse, marmots, and the common adder – human intervention created significant extensions to their habitats.

„Treasure of the Alps“ is a rare portrait of the co-existence of alpine wildlife and humans – a story that began thousands of years ago, and still continues in the Hohe Tauern National Park today.

The Treasury – Vienna’s Natural History MuseumMuseum des Lebens – Das Wiener Naturhistorische

For the world famous newspaper, the “Sunday Times”, an English team of museum specialists determined the ten best museums of this world – Austria’s Natural History Museum of Vienna was within the top ten. Without a doubt, it holds a unique position within the museums of the world.Vienna’s Natural History Museum is a collection of natural treasures – from meteorites to stone age artefacts, from dinosaur bones to fossils trapped in amber. But how did these jewels find their way into this temple of know-ledge? Every piece has its own story which leads out of the museum into the remotest corners of the world – and beyond. Trees of Tempting FruitMostviertel – Das Viertel der Verführung

The Mostviertel, Austria‘s pear country, stretches from the river Danube to the Alps, right in the heart of Austria. Pear trees are scattered across the landscape and produce 200 different kinds of pears. Their naturally tart fruits have been used for centuries to extract the delicious pear cider (per-ry). As production has grown over time, „Most“, the Austrian name for cider, has given the charming region its name.

From a geographical point of view, pear country is spared the climatic ext-remes of other Alpine regions in Austria and has thus become one of Europe‘s remaining sanctuaries for a variety of rare, altogether 3000 diffe-rent - including some endangered – species: the little owl, the European otter, the hoopoe, or the curlew.

Umbria – From Wreck to ReefUmbria – Vom Wrack zum Riff

On June 10, 1940, the Umbria, an Italian man-of-war, was scuttled in the Red Sea near Port Sudan. Tons of ammunition, 300.000 bombs and air mi-nes, military trucks, motorcycles and silver coins sank to the bottom of the sea. In 1949, Austria’s underwater pioneer Hans Hass explored the wreck and documented the beginning growth of corals. 30 years later he returned, filming and photographing the same positions again for comparison. The metamorphosis from wreck to reef was already on its way.

60 years after the Umbria sank, Erich Proell, another living legend of under-water filming, visited the wreck that had meanwhile turned into a veritable reef. Six decades after the Umbria sank almost the entire wreck has been taken over by marine creatures. The dark holds, still stacked with bombs and other war materials, have been colonised by armies of tube worms and a colourful array of sponges that can survive without sunlight. Erich Proell has documented some of the bizarre scenes of this submarine landscape: vintage motor cars, trucks, railway carriages standing upright in the sand, all overgrown with corals.

The Valley of the RavensDas Tal der Raben

At the edge of the Dead Mountains lies an enchanting, sparsely populated area – the inner Alm Valley. Especially in winter up to 120 half-grown ra-vens gather in the area around the wild animal park to steal food. This is the biggest permanent settlement of ravens in all of central Europe. They are blacker than night and smarter than parrots: ravens are capable of asto-nishing mental feats. How well does their bird’s brain really work? This do-cumentary probes deep into the raven’s soul and follows his awkward flight around the entire globe.

The film tells about the life and activities of the ravens. It tells about the observation of the Corpus Christi holiday and the magical „Echo Blowing“ at Alm lake, about bringing the cattle down from the high lying pastures and about the hunt. About the idyllic research institute with all its residents

– the students, the geese, chickens, dogs and sheep – and about Cumber-land Wild Animal Park that inconspicuously and harmoniously hugs the shore of the Alm.

The Vampire PrincessDie Vampirprinzessin

An aristocratic demon hunting for fresh human blood, who strikes unsus-pecting mortals at night – everyone knows the grim story of Count Dracula. A legend from medieval Romania or interpreted by a writer of horror stories? Now scientists can reveal the truth: The vampire story as we know isn’t modelled on a medieval count from Transylvania but on the fate of a Bohe-mian princess from the early 18th century. Behind the walls of the dark and giant castle of Czech Krumlov lived a beautiful princess. She suffered from an allergy to light and could only leave her living quarters secretly at night. As a terrible fear of vampires swept central Europe at that time the people of the small village went into hysterics and committed a horrible crime. 250 years later a team of archeologists finds a skeleton of a woman buried in Czech Krumlov according to vampire rituals at: the head of the skeleton had been separated and laid between the bones of the legs, the thorax run through with a wooden implement. This documentary traces the origins of all the vampire myths by uncovering a gruesome murder.

It is the world’s most mysterious manuscript. A book, written by an unknown author, illustrated with pictures that are as bizarre as they are puzz-ling – and written in a language that even the best cryptographers have been unable to deco-de. No wonder then, that this script even has a part in Dan Brown’s latest bestseller, “The Lost Symbol”. The Voynich Manuscript has captivated academics and occultists in equal measure since its discovery 100 years ago. The decoders of the Japanese Purple Code, physicists with high-per-formance modern computers and polymath his-torians have all tried their luck. But to date nobody has been able to decipher the book’s contents. “The Voynich Mystery” follows a completely new lead in the hunt for the author’s identity and un-covers the secret of the mysterious manuscript using the methods of materials science. To the pres ent day many historians believe the ma-nuscript to be a fake, allegedly circulated by the New York antique book dealer, Wilfrid Voynich, in 1912 so that he could offer it to wealthy ma-nuscript collectors. Voynich did not, however, succeed in selling the mysterious manuscript to a collector during his lifetime. After his death, it eventually found its way into the collection of the University of Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

The manuscript’s age, origin and contents remai-ned unknown. For almost a century, the numerous illustrations in particular have given rise to the most adventurous speculation and astounding theories. The secret lettering itself is also still a source of great mystery.

But now a new investigative approach has shed new light into the maze of conflicting theories and ideas. At the home of the Voynich Ma-nuscript, the University of Yale, the mysterious text has been looked at again using the methods of material science.

Vienna’s Forests – Jewels of GreenWiener Wälder – Grüne Juwele

Vienna’s forests make a visual impact on the city’s scenery – being a source of life and sanctuary at the same time: They are omnipresent and an enor-mous asset, taken for granted by many. Perhaps no other European capital boasts so many acres of forest per inhabitant. There are the well-known Vienna woods in the West and North, the national park of the Danube wetlands to the East, and numerous groves and green corridors right amidst built-up urban space.

Georg Riha’s film makes forests in their enormous diversity an experience in its own right, spotting forest wildlife in dens and observing nature as the seasons go by. Based on superb filming equipment such as the track-based overhead Camcat system and the exceptional CamTL35 fast-motion camera, the film shows visual montages alternating between idyllic impressions and unusual camera perspectives and views.

Vienna’s WaterWiener Wasser

The city of Vienna is world famous for its position on the River Danube. Eve-ry day Vienna’s residents consume around 370,000 cubic metres of water, which is not uncommon for a city of over a million people. However the fact that not a single drop comes from the great river is amazing. All of the water that is drunk or cooked with, that flows through showers, sinks and foun-tains into the city’s drains and wastewater treatment plants comes from the alps. Vienna’s exclusive water factory lies in the eastern limestone alps. The Rax-Schneeberg region in Lower Austria and the Styrian Hoschschwab are the natural reservoirs from which water has flowed to Vienna for almost 150 years. It follows the natural inclines from the mountains along two pipelines into the federal capital, where it collects in large reservoirs and is distributed via a network that is approximately 3000 km long.

The film shows the routes that this diverted mountain stream takes through the city and how the precious liquid transforms both itself and the city; it explains why Vienna General Hospital is the city’s greatest water consumer, accompanies dirty water through one of the most modern wastewater treatment plants in the world and observes its wondrous transformation on its way to the Danube.

One of the most stunning, untouched landscapes on earth is found in the heartland of Asia: stretching from the impenetrable forests of Siberia in the North to the Chinese wall in the South. And here, a huge variety of rare animal species are found under its deep blue sky. The rocky territory in the mountains of the North is shared by powerful Argali sheep and ibex. The Southwest of Mongolia is home to the Mongolian Wild Horse, the ancestor of our domestic horse. In the interior of the Gobi desert, wild camels wander from oasis to oasis. The East of the country holds the biggest area of grass-land in Asia. The Wild and the WestWild ist der Weste(r)n

In the mountains of Colorado lies the source of a river that has long become a myth. Known as the Rio Bravo or Ferocious River in Mexico and as Rio Grande in the USA, this 2000 miles long band of water has been a river of fate for both countries, a natural link and a hotly disputed border. The land of the Rio Bravo has been immortalised in the most famous Western movies ever shown on screen. Some of the heroes, villains and symbolic figures in these Western sagas have been wild animals: the lone wolf, the howling cowardly coyote, the foreboding vulture, the deadly rattler, all staged in a scenery, much bigger than life. This film is the portrait of an American and global myth and its modern reality introducing vast lands and wild animals.

Wasteland WarriorsWiener Gstettn – Wildnis in der Großstadt

Surrounded by barren cities, sterile concrete or over maintained, uniform patches of green, more and more animals are losing their last places of ret-reat. The city continues to grow inexorably but, where humans fail to impo-se their order, nature sprouts and crawls out of the tiny cracks in the as-phalt and concrete and re-conquers its territory. Disused land is often the last place of retreat for wild animals in the city. More than two thousand species of plants can be found in Vienna alone, as well as half of all Austrian breeding birds and two thirds of the country’s mammals. Many disused are-as in Vienna are home to a host of threatened species like, for example, crested larks, nightingales, praying mantisses or fire-bellied toads. Count-less mammals, birds, insects and amphibians are making their homes here once again. The city’s wilderness is characterised by their comings and go-ings, their struggle to survive and their quest to find increasingly scarce resources and habitats.

The Wild BalkansWilder Balkan

Wolves hunt their prey in the valleys between high-ranging dunes, bears and lynxes wander through dense primeval forest, and the big lakes are a magnet for hundreds of bird species. That is the so-called “Balkan”. Today the “Balkans” stand for a Europe that hardly exists elsewhere. The moun-tains of Montenegro harbour one of Europe’s last primeval forests with trees over 400 years of age. In the difficultly accessible hinterland we find the Tara National Park with the deepest gorge in the Karst Mountains – the 1.300 meters deep Tara gorge. Nearby Lake Skadar is home for 270 species of birds; no other lake in Europe can claim such diversity. Europe’s last coastal forest area can be found in Albania and in Bulgaria and Romania huge bat colonies live in the cave-dotted mountains. In Serbia one can cross the “European Sahara”, a desert covering a surface of 30.000 hecta-res. This documentary takes us on the journey through untouched wilder-ness in a region that has disreputably been called a powder keg and where conflicts have drawn attention away from its hidden treasures.

Year of the HedgehogDas Jahr des Igels

It’s springtime, the air is tepid, the skylarks chirp, and spring flowers cover the meadows and the forest grounds. Out of a pile of leaves a fluttery, sniff-ling snout tip appears: it’s a hedgehog awakening from its winter sleep heading into the light of a new year, having only two things in mind: food and finding a partner. This documentary accompanies for a year one of the most popular yet still unknown animals of our landscape. The hedgehog is not only part of the oldest mammal species on our planet, newest findings disclose that it will stay among us for many years to come. Neither the mas-sive destruction of natural habitats nor the horrendous road kill can seri-ously endanger its population.

Award-winning wildlife filmmaker Kurt Mündl will present never before seen details and behavioural patterns of the spiky fellow. With special ca-mera techniques he is in pursuit of the most interesting questions. What does a hedgehog really eat and drink? What do their newborns look like and do they have quills? Is a hedgehog immune against snake-venom and why has it been a symbol of luck over the last centuries?

ZambeziSambesi – Der donnernde Fluss

It’s one of the least known rivers on earth – yet it flows for nearly 2.600 kilometers and belongs to six countries. The Zambezi is the fourth-longest river in Africa, and along its course and its many changing moods it is a haven and a resource for wild animals and humans alike. This film tells the story of the Zambezi, from its source in the uplands of Zambia through to the vast delta in Mozambique where it empties into the Indian Ocean. Along its course the river changes its mood many times – sometimes placid and flowing out into vast open floodplains. Then it changes to raging torrents tearing through narrow rock gorges, before once again slowing, becoming deceptively placid before thundering into the mighty Victoria Falls – known to the local people as Mosi oa Tunya, the smoke that thunders. The Zambezi is a source of life to a vast array of wild creatures along its ever changing course. There are hippopotamus that live along the floodplains and depend upon the river for life at the height of the dry season when the flow ebbs away. Herds of ele-phants come to the river to drink and bathe in its cooling waters. There are the hunters, the crocodiles and hyenas, the wild dogs and the prides of lions. And there are the hunted, the flighty impala and the graceful kudu as well as other species of antelope, and the herds of buffalo and wildebeest that feed on the grasslands and depend on the flowing water for life.

Filmed throughout the changing seasons we follow the Zambezi from its headwaters through the gorges and waterfalls, along its floodplains as they fill with water and then dry out again with the seasons, until at last it flows out into the Indian Ocean. The story of the Zambezi is one of constant change, of life and death – it is the story of Africa itself.

Carving into HistoryTore zur Unterwelt

An ancient chart hidden inside a cannonball electrifies an international re-search team in Styria, southeastern Austria. The map shows an extensive, long-forgotten underground tunnel system. No one knows what it’s for, why it’s there or who charted it. This archaeological “Cold Case” is about to turn red hot! Researchers dig, drill, scan and crawl through the narrow pas-sages, recording and interpreting this vast underground puzzle with the latest scientific and experimental techniques. Locals contribute extra knowledge to the investigation. Experts compare their results against in-ternational findings: are these tunnels part of a mysterious Europe-wide phenomenon of ancient underground chambers? Evidence of an unknown megalithic civilization in Central Europe? What do the Styrian menhirs and pierced stones mean? Are there connections with stone structures in the Orkney Islands, or those in Ireland, France, Spain, Malta and the Caucasus? Cryptic information from nearby Romania has caught the scientists’ atten-tion, too. These expeditions underground need physical courage, daring and the meticulous attention to detail of a criminal investigation. This unique archaeological site leads us into an underground Europe whose age, purpose, structure and meaning are only just being uncovered.

What we are about to learn may change our understanding of parts of hu-man history forever.

The Beauty and the Beast – The True StoryDie Schöne und das Biest – Die wahre Geschichte

From his birth in 1556 on Tenerife Petrus Gonsalvus suffered from a rare disease now called „hypertrichosis“ or „Ambras syndrome”: His body in-cluding his face was completely covered with hair leading people to believe he was a talking ape. From early childhood on he was held in the parks of Fontainebleau providing amusement to the court of King Henry II of France. A pretty young woman was bribed into marriage with Gonsalvus. They had several children some of which inherited their father’s rare disease. They were taken away and sold or donated to other courts in Europe. Petrus himself was passed around as a celebrity among the nobilities of France, Austria and Italy. Eventually Gonsalvus and his wife found their peace and settled down in Italy near Lake Bolsena. Their touching fate reflects one of the most powerful stories ever written. “The Beauty and the Beast” – the archetypal tale of how ignorance and cruelty can only be overcome by love. A new docu-drama from the producers of the Vampire Princess.

Climbing with the Stars – AustriaLand der Berge

Dark green, wooded mountainsides, bizarre rock formations and the blin-ding white of eternal snow and ice: nine Austrian federal states, nine moun-tains, nine summits. This documentary attains the heights. Stunning cine-flex views of Austria‘s Alps alternate with images of climbers rising through spectacular landscapes. And it‘s more. Austrian celebrities from all walks of life do what celebrities should do – celebrate: the mountains‘ magic, their challenge, their peace, their exhilaration and inspiration - and sometimes their terror. Simultaneously, two of the world‘s best mountain climbers, a man and a woman, set out to conquer all nine peaks in nine days. It has never been done before. The view from the sky reveals the different world each mountain is the centre of (even the state of Vienna‘s, only 300 meters high!). Each is a unique ecosystem separated by bands of altitude. Those who know the mountains best - mountain innkeepers, rescue teams, dairy maids - toss in a grain of realism . . . Austria‘s peaks from zero to zenith and back again, with thrills, emotion, achievement and invigorating energy.

Climbing with the Stars – The World!Land der Berge

The ultimate iconic challenge format. To some, they are a legend. To others, a magnetic but unattainable goal. And to a few, a life‘s mission. The „Seven Summits“, the highest mountain peaks on each of the world‘s seven conti-nents, are all this – vision, dream, and challenge – and more. Our journey takes us across the globe from Africa‘s Mount Kilimanjaro (5.895m) – with possibly the last images of its melting glaciers - to Alaska‘s bitterly cold Mount McKinley (6.195 m), to the world‘s highest mountain, Mount Everest (8.848 m) at the border between Nepal and China. Each highest peak in each continent. Accompanied by seasoned alpine cameramen, prominent mountaineers conquer these fascinating mountains and peaks. Each climb is a challenge, a race against the clock. We join them in their daring adven-tures with a series of intimate films, not just about scaling the mountains but the people and mountains themselves, stunning in their majesty and diversity: lush mountainsides, jagged peaks and ridges, and dazzling white glacier slopes. It can be a race to be first, or a test of strategy and of charac-ter. It doesn‘t have to be global. If there‘s a hill in your country – it can happen there too! The competition itself can be national or international wherever it happens. The mountaineers can be top professionals alone, or partnered by celebrities – social climbers! It can be a fundraising event for charity. It can support a week of television, with documentary specials, re-gular updates, live newsflashes and web reports. Whatever your country‘s needs, we‘ve done it and we can show you how.

Extreme – Light and DarkExtrem – Licht und Schatten

Humans prefer moderation – neither too hot nor too cold, neither too light nor too dark. But Earth doesn‘t cater to our preferences. Our planet offers an abundance of extreme conditions, and people everywhere have had to learn to adapt to their surroundings.

“EXTREME! – Light and Dark“ is a journey to the brightest and darkest inha-bited areas of the world: places where a cloud hardly ever crosses the sky; or months pass without a single ray of sunlight reaching the ground. How does so much light, or so little, affect the mindset and emotional well-being of the people who live with it? How do they protect themselves? And how do they take advantage of their situation? Yuma in Arizona just recently lost the title “world’s brightest town” to Agadem, a tiny oasis in the Sahara Desert; while the Italian village of Viganella has winter sunshine even in its alpine ravine – ever since the mayor attached parabolic reflectors to the mountaintops!

Following previous “EXTREME!”s: “Valley Deep – Mountain High”, “Drought to Deluge” and “Freezer to Furnace”, this new episode brings to life the brightest and most shadowed places on Earth in spectacular images.

Danube – Europe’s AmazonasDonau – Die Lebensader Europas

Romantic river banks and unspoilt nature – wherever the Danube flows these types of landscapes dominate. This comprehensive cinematic portrait of Europe’s second longest river presents numerous scenes of heavenly beauty along the banks of the Danube, as well as the tension between humans and nature and civilisation and wilderness. Dams and power stations alternate with sections of natural wilderness along this mighty river, which flows through metropolises such as Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and untou-ched natural landscapes like the Danube national park and the Kopac̆ki Rit.

Further south, between the Carpathian mountain range in Romania and the Serbian Ore mountains, the river passes through the so called Iron Gate, 137 kilometres of gorges that are among the largest in Europe. The final opening of the Danube into the Black Sea couldn’t be more spectacular. The mighty river expires in a unique labyrinth of water, mud and reeds – the Danube delta. It is the last remaining major river delta in Europe and the largest reed bed on earth, used by huge colonies of pelicans, cormorants, sea eagles and spoonbills to nest and breed.

Hunting BuddiesJagdkumpane

No animal reflects human social changes as much as the dog. For millennia, dogs have served as mankind‘s hunting buddies, vital companions in our struggle for survival. But today‘s increasingly civilized world forces modern dogs to abandon their first instincts, serving as replacement children or partners for alienated urbanites, diagnosing cancer, or sniffing for drugs. We have forgotten what it actually means to be a dog, a hunter. “Hunting Buddies” looks back at this part of our cultural history, and asks what we have given up and gained as our relationship with dogs has changed.

Starring five different hunting dogs, we follow them in real life situations seen from the dogs‘ perspective. Each episode is associated with a specific period in hunting history, when each dog breed was supremely adapted to the tasks and skills required.

“Hunting Buddies” takes a closer look at dog and man, nature and culture – a cinematic cross-over appealing not just to hunters and dog lovers but to anyone interested in the history and development of humankind.

First in EuropeDie ersten Europäer

Who were the people who settled in Europe and cleared the land for cultivation? What pushed them to the north? And how did the first great European powers come into existence and why were they destroyed again?

“First in Europe”, a three part series, takes a journey through time to visit our forefathers. It immerses itself in people’s lives from around 5000 years BC until 1000 AD. Using countless small jigsaw pieces that archaeologists from across Europe have uncovered, it is possible to build up an image of those times that explains the history of Europe in astonishing fashion. Each episode follows a protagonist from their respective eras on their life’s mis-sion. The first episode accompanies a young man who has been sent out into the world to re-establish contact with his forefathers. Episode 2 accom-panies a son who has been forced to leave his parents’ home to find new, fertile land, and episode three tells the story of one of history’s first merce-naries. The past is brought back to life by these three protagonists and gi-ven a face. Whilst they are fictitious, it is quite possible that their lives and fates could have played out this way or similarly for somebody.

Miaow at MiramareDie Katzen von Miramare

Miramare Castle’s history begins 150 years ago aboard the small sailing ship Madonna della Salute. A terrible storm is raging and her crew and pas-sengers – including Maximilian von Habsburg, new Commander-in-Chief of the Austrian Imperial Navy, and Ariadne, the ships’s cat – seek refuge in the Gulf of Sistano near Trieste. By the time the clouds lift Maximilian has alrea-dy chosen this delightful location for his future dream castle – Miramare. It will be his sanctuary in a turbulent life, ending in his tragic execution as Emperor of a distant land. More than just a historic building, Miramare is a legend of love, sorrow, creation and beauty that has endured through the years. Owners, guests and visitors have come and gone. But the cats were and are always there. They have lived and raised their families here for centuries, thriving in one of Europe’s most exquisite and diverse botanical gardens. And who better to relate the castle’s history, its legends and fascinating secrets than Ariadne’s descendant Max, king of cats and true ruler of Miramare?

Kings of The Masai MaraDie Könige der Masai Mara

This is the unusual portrait of two hunters, the cheetah and hyena. It is a dramatic story around the competition for prey and territories and the fight for survival. The setting is the legendary Masai Mara in Kenya and our head-quarters is a research camp. For years the biologist Kay Holekamp from the Michigan State University and her team have studied the behaviour of hyenas.

We travel with Kay and her young fellows into the territory where a clan of hyenas roam. We show from the sky and from the ground how hyenas snatch prey away from the cheetah, and even how they attack the spotted cats. We see how differently both of them hunt: while the cheetah relies on the most part on its staggering fast sprints, hyenas approach it in a more tactical manner and are hunting in groups.

The two rivals have a common archenemy: the lion. The big cats deliberate-ly kill hyenas and young cheetahs whenever there is an occasion. The film shows why that happens and questions whether there really is a number one, a King of the Masai Mara.

Nature Tech ReloadedNature Tech Reloaded

The Emmy and Jackson Hole Winners are back! For four billion years Nature has been solving engineering challenges. Over the last twenty years, hu-mans have begun to realize how much we still have to learn from the master of design. In 2006, the three-episode series „Nature Tech“ drew the world‘s attention to the fi eld of Biomimetics: using Nature‘s blueprints for human engineering challenges. „Nature Tech“, directed by Alfred Vendl and Steve Nicholls, won both an Emmy and the Award for Best Limited Series at the 2007 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. Now, „Nature Tech Reloaded“ builds on this success with two further one-hour episodes.

So Episode 1, „Creating Resources“, presents wind farms patterned after schools of fi sh, dolphin-inspired long-distance communication, and fresh water collectors based on beetles and trees. Sometimes engineers copy nature as closely as possible and to the original purpose. Sometimes we adapt what we learn to meet new challenges and reach new goals. Either way, „Nature Tech Reloaded“ reveals both the beauty of nature and the genius of science – with the thrill of innovation and ongoing discovery.

Episode 2, „Saving Resources“, focuses on lessons of effi ciency. Bullet trains reshaped to take advantage of the silent perfection of a kingfi sher‘s dive, water purifi cation based on algae from coral reefs, computers based on the architecture of the brain – these are just a few of the nature-based innovations „Nature Tech Reloaded“ uncovers. But saving resources is only the start, if we are to survive as our world grows smaller and the human population larger.

A Partner for GeorgeEine Frau für Lonesome George

The last battle for the tortoises‘ survival has begun. And in one case, it has come down to a single individual: “Lonesome George”, the sole known li-ving example of the Pinta Island Tortoise in the Galapagos. In 1972, a group of scientists found him living in solitude on this remote island. They have been looking for a suitable wife for “Lonesome George” ever since. But un-fortunately George has turned out to be picky. And now he’s more than 100 years old! Tortoises and turtles have inhabited the Earth for 220 million years, making their homes in every habitat: oceans, rivers, lakes, deserts and rain forests. Yet this contemporary of the dinosaurs that successfully survived every challenge is now itself threatened by extinction.

More than 300 different tortoise and turtle species still exist worldwide. These astounding animals live much longer than humans and survive for months without food. When they dig their burrows, they equip their homes with tortoise air-conditioning.

“A Partner for George” features tortoises and turtles in nature and in mytho-logy – and celebrates the courage, skill and imagination of researchers deter-mined to track down mates for these threatened or almost extinct species.

Namibia – Diamonds are Natures’ Best FriendsNamibia –Tierparadies im Sperrgebiet

The Sperrgebiet, which means “a forbidden area”, is one of the most pro-tected areas in the world and located in the southern Namib Desert, lying alongside the Atlantic Ocean from Oranjemund along the Orange River to Luederitz. For thousands of years, the Orange River carried diamonds from inland to the coast and into the sea. The first of these diamonds were found at Kolmanskop, 30 kilometres east of Luederitz, in 1908. A diamond rush followed and to control mining activity, the German colonial government of the time proclaimed the coast down to the mouth of the Orange/Gariep, including a buffer zone reaching 100 kilometres inland, as “Sperrgebiet” (restricted area). Because diamond mining is confined to the coast, the rest of the area remains practically untouched. In February 2009 the Sperrge-biet became Namibia’s newest National Park preserving biodiversity riches unrivalled elsewhere in Africa. Under strong restrictions parts thereof are now accessible to the public for the first time in over a hundred years.

Pitoti – Home Movies of the AncientsPitoti –Kino aus Stein

These home movies are the fi lms with the longest production schedule in history: 4,200 years. That‘s how long it is since the Camuni, in their steep alpine valley in northern Italy, left 150,000 rock engravings depicting their everyday experience, with duels, dances, maps of their village, and scenes of home life, farming and play – before the Roman legions invaded and de-stroyed everything in 15 BC. No other prehistoric European society left us such a complete yet mystifying record of its existence.

Now archaeologist Christopher Chippindale and the experts of Cambridge‘s “Prehistoric Picture Project” are piecing together the evidence. And they have to get up early and stay late, because only when the sun is low in the sky do these drawings – gouged, scraped and pecked into the bare undula-ting rock – come alive in dramatic relief, vivid movement – and lashings of humor. Now prizewinning director Frederick Baker (“Shadowing the Third Man”) is completing the fi lm he believes the Camuni themselves would have made if they had had the technology: animating the scenes together into a unique self-portrait of this ancient culture. Planet SparrowPlanet der Spatzen

Ben is a sparrow in the South in Cairo. Bushy and tousled, he fl its between crowded stalls to build his nest. He’s one of fi ve heroes of “Planet Spar-row“. Their adventures cover the world, traveling westward with the sun from Egypt to Austria, New York, Shanghai and Moscow. At each destinati-on we observe the life and world of the oldest species to live in harmony with humankind – without ever becoming domesticated!

Small and gray-brown, sparrows may seem dull, but this fi rst impression is deceptive. They sing as prettily as canaries and are extremely clever, dipping bread and rice grains into water to soften them and learning to open milk cans by watching other birds. Their insect-hunting skills are brea-thtaking; the camera pursues these artists of fl ight through narrow alleys, revealing their spectacular aerial maneuvers.

“Planet Sparrow” also shows how their 10,000 year coexistence with hu-mans hasn‘t always been harmonious. In the middle ages a “sparrow tax” forced every citizen to deliver 12 dead sparrows a year to prove they were protecting the harvest from their predations. “Planet Sparrow” is a docu-mentary about these fl ying survival artists, their neighbors and adversaries, all photographed from the perspective of the birds!

Power of PlayDie Macht des Spiels

Games are vital for the development of all mammals – and even some birds. Games train animals in the complex skills of hunting and fighting, as well as honing their sensory coordination and physical fitness. The more complex the organism, the more complex the games, until they are crucial to the well-being of an entire community – while at the same the individual‘s sub-jective world comes more and more into ‘play’.

This documentary by prizewinning film-maker Waltraud Paschinger (“Alpi-ne Meltdown”, “The Hare and the Sun“) takes a good look at play among animals and among human children and adults. It then segues to online computer games like “World of Warcraft”, with 12 million players worldwi-de controlling their avatars. What are the effects of playing in artificial sur-roundings? Has this changed the meaning of “Play” forever?

“Power of Play” addresses these questions by referring to the animal king-dom – since humans don‘t have a monopoly on role-play. In the mock fights of young rats, lions or foxes, the hunters and the hunted frequently change places.

The Senses – Making Sense of the World Around Us

“The Senses” is a landmark, innovative series that combines the newest filming technology with the latest scientific research to reveal just how our senses work together to allow us to understand and affect the world around us. Using exquisite and intriguing visuals, the series will discover how the human senses work, but, in doing so, we will explore how other creatures sense their world, and how they compare to our own perceptions.

Part 1

The simplest way to sense our world is to contact it directly – to touch it, or be touched by it.

Touch is the most fundamental of the senses – a touch tells us that something is very close to us. Our sense of touch is in our skin, with different sensors for pressure and temperature.

Part 2

To sense the world without having to touch it – sensing from a distance – is often safer than di-rect contact. Reacting to changes in light and dark, to sunlight, soon became a sense of its own, and as patches of skin became sensitive to light, vision came into being.

The complexity of the eye is often used as evi-dence for a divine creator yet vision has evolved several times and it’s thought that the develop-ment of vision was the stimulus for the Cambrian explosion of diversity.

Part 3

The third program explores how the senses work together and how the brain processes the data it receives to create new information.

Occasionally, senses can interfere with each other. Franz Liszt, the greatest composer and performer of the piano used an unusual neurolo-gical condition – synaesthesia. He saw music in colour – his musical gift was partly visual. He shows how the brain can re-map information from different senses.

Shangri-La – The Valley of Eternal YouthShangri-La – Das Tal der ewigen Jugend

There is a virgin paradise guarded by the „Eight-thousanders“ right in the much-embattled „northern territories“ of Pakistan. According to a myth, people there turn older than in any other place in the world.

The film takes you through the wild mountainous scenery of northern Pa-kistan. It conjoins fascinating landscape observations of snow leopards in the wild with deep insights into the traditions of the Hunzakuts, mountain inhabitants who get “as old as the hills”. A blooming land-scape with para-disiacal apricot groves, grapevines, and fruit orchards between hostile deserts and insurmountable canyons, in which markhors graze, the impres-sive animals of the Karakorum. The narrative context draws from the touching journey of Ali, the Hunza mountain farmer, who travels with both his kids, Nazir and Aima, to the notorious Shandur Pass where every year the toughest polo match in the world takes place. Like many boys of his age, Ali’s son Nazir dreams of becoming a famous polo player one day. They are traveling on Asia’s most dangerous route for one month. The journey will take us through the territory of the mysterious Hunza people, of whom a majority belongs to the Ismaili religious community. They practice a tolerant, blitheful form of Islam, which is also open to older, pre-islamic traditions.

Schladming – Gateway to the AlpsSchladming – Tor zu den Alpen

These steep rock walls and deep ravines were made to be climbed, lush al-pine meadows were made for summer strolls and steep ski slopes for the more daring: Schladming in northern Austria is a unique European destination where man and beast alike can live in harmony with the bounty and the challenge of the highest peaks. But this is anything but a ‚natural‘ landscape. This land has been cultivated and punctured for centuries: treasures were mined from its depths and its alpine meadows were populated with domestic animals. Yet in the shadow of the Dachstein mountains, in the Enns valley, red deer, wood-grouse, gol-den eagles and Eurasian lynx stake out their territories as they have for thousands of years. The Low Tauern moors, too, offer a stunning diversity of animal and plant life. The tension between intensive management by twenty-first century city dwellers and Schladming‘s ancient surroundings rises to a peak with 2013‘s world ski-ing championships. That confrontation is at the heart of this film. While historic archive underpins the story of Dachstein‘s notorious South Face and the legendary Planai, one of the first great ski slopes, superb nature photography captures the animal life that is the replaceable soul of this much-visited region.

Ships of the DesertWüstenschiffe

Camels are masters of the art of survival. They can go for up to ten months without a drop of water, then drink 200 litres in only 15 minutes, and even digest seawater. Domesticated as beasts of burden they laid the founda-tions of ancient long-distance trade. Legendary salt and incense caravans 2,000 strong regularly crossed the most hostile landscapes in the world.

Today, camels are still the most important source of milk, meat, leather, wool, fertilizer – and fuel – in large parts of Africa and Asia, and for the Be-douins of Arabia. Because of this, Bedouins call the camel Al-Ata Allah, the gift of God. Bedouins believe that mankind knows ninety-nine names of Allah - but the camel alone knows the hundredth! Now medical researchers are exploring the miraculous properties of camels’ milk – apparently effec-tive against Alzheimer’s, cancer and even Aids! The film shows animals in the wild, defying the deadly conditions of the desert, and males battling brutally for control of the harem group; while the specially bred racing ca-mels are worth up to $ 3 m each.

Ships of the Desert follows the ancient routes of the camel-caravans across Arabia, Africa and Asia, telling fascinating camel-stories along the way, from ancient times to the present in this 5,000-year epic of coexistence between animal and humankind.

Woodland WarriorsDer wilde Wald der Kaiserin

A palace in a private woodland park, right next to the city of Vienna. 25 square miles of lonely beauty designed for a tragic Queen. The Lainzer Park was a gift to Elisabeth Empress of Austria, from her husband more than a century ago – her sanctuary from the suffocating protocol of Court. Today visitors are restricted to the official paths of a walled wonderland that is both fully wild and fully protected, a landscape untouched by the age of industry.

In the midst of the forest is a garden whose four-hundred-year old oaks have trunks more than four meters round. The crowns of the trees host more than 1,000 insect species, including a hundred different kinds of but-terflies.

In the spirit of Thomas Rilk’s last film “Wasteland Warriors”, set in Vienna’s building sites and scrublands, this hidden ecosystem reveals a macro-world of astonishing variety, beauty and colour in the trees and on the ground, as well as following the free-roaming deer and wild hogs, living so close to the busy center of Vienna.
